That experience instilled in me not only a lifelong love of music, but also an appreciation for the joy of performing and sharing music and songs with others. And I am not alone. Today, more than 40 million Americans sing with a choir, a cappella, chorus or other music group. Inspired by these numbers—and the success of our Western Massachusetts sister station WGBY’s own choral series—WGBH is proud to bring you Sing That Thing!, a new local series showcasing New England’s best amateur groups in a friendly competition that celebrates the diversity of song. Over the course of six episodes, you’ll hear moving performances by 23 singing teams in four categories (high school, college, adult small group and adult large group ensembles)—more than 600 singers in all. This production is very much a collaborative effort. We’ve lined up three outstanding coaches-judges: Jane Eaglen, New England Conservatory professor and opera star; Larry Watson, Berklee College of Music professor, vocalist and producer; and our own Jared Bowen, WGBH arts editor. We’ve also worked in partnership with Emerson College, whose students teamed up with WGBH professionals to learn how to shoot and edit a series. And we’ve called on the talents of international composer Jim Papoulis to create an original work that will be interpreted/performed by the eight finalists in our hour-long grand finale (page 18). Tying it all together is our talented host Anthony Trecek-King, director of the Boston Children’s Chorus and a consummate choral master and communicator. Anthony’s enthusiasm for this art form is infectious. “So many cultures sing, and these choral exchanges can bring communities together,” says Anthony, winner of the President’s Committee on Arts & Humanities 2013 Award. “In a choir, every voice is different, yet each is equally important.” As many of you know firsthand, choruses and vocal ensembles are a vital part of the cultural fabric of our communities. They are a focal point for joyful, shared experiences. I hope you’ll tune in Sing That Thing! and be as carried away as I am by the power of voices raised together in song. Springtime in a Bowl Salads are a terrific way to turn vegetables into a main course. When Martha Stewart invites guests to lunch, she loves to serve frisée aux lardons, a savory French salad made with spicy greens, crisp bacon, creamy poached eggs and warm vinaigrette. Her triedand-true chopped salad, featuring crunchy veggies and piquant herbs, truly looks as wonderful as it tastes. The culinary classicist also tosses up a masterful Caesar salad and, when a lighter treat is in order, composes an elegant plate of stacked butter lettuce enlivened by citrus and fresh ginger. Return to Cambodia Sayon Souen was abducted at age 6 and exploited by the Khmer Rouge as a child soldier. After the regime fell, he was placed in an orphanage in a refugee camp, then adopted by a loving family in the US. Follow Sayon’s present-day journey as he returns to Cambodia to meet siblings he had assumed were dead, revisiting childhood memories in a quest to find the truth about a family he barely remembers and come to terms with having been a witness to genocide. Lost Child: Sayon’s Journey Tue, 5/12 at 7pm One Hawaiian’s Dream Teshya Alo is 16 years old and 125 pounds, but on the judo and wrestling mats, she throws women twice her age and far heavier. Now she has her sights set on taking gold at the judo and wrestling world championships— and eventually the Olympics. Join this ambitious young athlete of Polynesian ancestry as she travels from Hawaii to compete in mainland and international tournaments, despite financial drain, her relative youth and lack of experience and the challenges of puberty. America ReFramed/ Winning Girl Tue, 5/12 at 8pm Nine-man is a chaotic streetball game played only by men and only in Chinatown. It dates to 1930s America, when Chinatowns were overwhelmingly male and racist laws reinforced isolation. This lively film introduces a history of the game and a diverse cast of players, including 6'7" Olympian Kevin Wong and a 91-year-old pioneer. From Chinatown parking lots to lavish banquets, it captures the vibrant spirit of nine-man as devotees battle for a championship and to preserve this cultural touchstone. America ReFramed/9-Man Tue, 5/5 at 8pm In the early 1900s, the Furuta family founded a successful goldfish farm in Wintersburg, CA. They were part of an immigrant community that thrived before California law banned Japanese from owning land. Decades after the first Furutas helped settle the area, however, internment devastated their business and tore apart their family. Historians and Furuta descendants reflect upon family and community in the years before and after the war. Our American Family/ The Furutas Wed, 5/20 at 7pm World is produced and distributed by WGBH Boston, American Public Television and WNET/New York in association with PBS and the National Educational Telecommunications Association. worldchannel.org 23 Advertisement Early Japanese Settlers Programs, Repeats and Overnights on 2 and 44 Arts & Drama America’s Ballroom Challenge Fri (5/1) 9pm on 2, Sat (5/2) 2am on 44; 5am on 2, Sun (5/3) 12am on 2; 7pm on 44, Mon (5/4) 5am on 44, Fri (5/8) 1pm on 44; 9pm on 2, Sat (5/9) 1am, 5am on 2; 2am, 1:30pm on 44, Sun (5/10) 7pm on 44, Mon (5/11) 5am on 44 Austin City Limits Beck Sun (5/3) 12am on 44 Bon Iver Sun (5/17) 12am on 44 Bonnie Raitt/Mavis Staples Sun (5/10) 12am on 44 Front and Center Bob Dipiero Featuring Brandy Clark Sun (5/3) 11pm on 44 Little Big Town Sun (5/24) 11pm on 44 Sara Evans and Martina McBride: Ladies Night Out Sun (5/10) 11pm on 44 The Graduate Sun (5/17) 6pm on 44 Great Performances Andris Nelsons Inaugural Concert Fri (5/29) 9pm on 2, Sat (5/30) 1am on 2; 2am on 44, Sun (5/31) 3pm on 2 Great Performances at the Met Les Contes d’Hoffmann Sun (5/24) 1:30pm on 2 In Performance at the White House Salute to the Troops Fri (5/22) 10pm on 2, Sat (5/23) 2am on 2; 3am on 44, Mon (5/25) 4am on 44, Tue (5/26) 1pm on 44 loopdiver: The Journey of a Dance Sun (5/10) 10:30pm on 44, Fri (5/15) 10:30pm on 2, Sat (5/16) 3:30am on 44, Mon (5/18) 4:30am on 44 The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize Billy Joel Fri (5/8) 10pm on 2, Sat (5/9) 2am on 2; 3am, 2:30pm on 44, Mon (5/11) 3:06am on 44, Tue (5/12) 12pm on 44 The Lincoln Awards: A Concert for Veterans and the Military Family Fri (5/22) 9pm on 2, Sat (5/23) 1am, 5am on 2; 2am on 44, Mon (5/25) 3am on 44, Tue (5/26) 12pm on 44 The Mark Twain Prize Jay Leno Sun (5/24) 9pm on 44 The National Memorial Day Concert Sun (5/24) 8pm, 9:30pm on 2, Mon (5/25) 12am, 1:30am on 44; 12am, 4:30am on 2, Tue (5/26) 3am, 4:30am on 44 Open Studio with Jared Bowen Every Fri 8:30pm on 2, Sun 11am on 2 Also Sun (5/3, 5/10, 5/17) 11:30am, 5:30pm on 44, Sat (5/16) 5:30am on 2, Sat (5/30) 5am on 2 Rain Man Sun (5/24) 5:30pm on 44 Sing That Thing! Presenting International News from a Local Angle In April, WGBH News and The GroundTruth Project began bringing listeners a new monthly series presenting international news with a local perspective. Reported and produced by Elizabeth Ross from WGBH News and The Takeaway, What’s on 89.7 WGBH Advertisement Monday–Friday 5am 7:50am 10am 11am 2pm 3pm 4pm 6pm 6:30pm 7pm 8pm 9pm 10pm 11pm 12am Versatile pianist Keith Jarrett was born May 8, 1945. Over his 50-year career, he has recorded an astonishing range of works: solo piano, small group and orchestral; improvisational and composed; jazz, fusion and classical. This evening’s show will focus on the jazz side of his distinctive repertoire. Sun, 5/10 at 9pm the series provides local context to stories uncovered by international reporting from GroundTruth. Started by Charles Sennott, co-founder of GlobalPost, and headquartered at WGBH, the non-profit GroundTruth Project aims to spread freedom of expression in developing countries by training a new generation of correspondents. The editorial partnership with WGBH News endeavors to close the gap between international current affairs and their relevance to local residents. NECIR Moves to WGBH Newsroom; Isaiah Thompson Joins Investigative Team Expanding a partnership that began in 2013, the New England Center for Investigative Reporting (NECIR) is now fully housed within the WGBH newsroom. NECIR has made several new reporting and managerial hires in recent months, including reporter Isaiah Thompson, who is filing stories exclusively for NECIR and WGBH News, bolstering both newsrooms’ investigative journalism. Thompson is an experienced reporter who has focused on investigative and public interest journalism for ProPublica, This American Life, the Philadelphia City Paper and Miami New Times. He has won the prestigious Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) award and multiple awards from The Society of Professional Journalists. Signs of the season are all around, and here at WCRB, we’ll play music that matches the mood. That’s why you’ll be hearing the wonderful music of our beloved Boston Pops Orchestra. We’re featuring four concerts—three led by Keith Lockhart, one by John Williams—in our Saturday 8pm slot. You can find detailed information about the performances on our website, classicalwcrb.org. May is also Mother’s Day month, and we’d like to pay homage to these wonderful women with special listener-submitted dedications. Find us on Facebook (Facebook.com/99.5WCRB) and tell us a piece you’d like to dedicate to your special someone—then on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 10, we’ll play as many of these dedications as we can. Make the moms you know happy with the music they love from the ones they love! Also, I want to remind you to join us every Sunday (at 8pm) What’s on 99.5 WCRB Online:classicalwcrb.org On-air: 99.5 Boston-NH | 89.7 HD2 Boston | 96.3 Beacon Hill | 88.7 Providence | 90.1 HD2 Cape and Islands Monday–Friday 5am Mornings with Laura Carlo 5am Writer’s Almanac 10am Classical Music with Alan McLellan 3pm Classical Afternoons 8pm Late Nights on WCRB 8pm Boston Symphony Orchestra (Mon) The Symphony at 8 (Tue–Fri) as we explore the rich, exciting world of opera. This month we’ll span four centuries: On May 3, we’ll air Francesco Cavalli’s rarely heard comedy L’Ormindo; on May 10, listen for Mozart’s charming and also rarely heard Il re pastore (The Shepherd King); on May 17, enjoy one of the cornerstones of opera, Wagner’s Lohengrin (left), and on May 31, we will conclude the month with Puccini’s final masterpiece, Turandot. Now, if you’re paying attention, you will have noticed that we left out Sunday, May 24. That’s part of Memorial Day Weekend, which comes early this year (May 23–25). WCRB will be celebrating the unofficial start of summer with a weekend filled by hour after hour of the greatest music, all selected to match the spirit of the season. As for opera, that Sunday night (May 24) we’ll focus on vocal music and choral favorites as part of our Holiday Weekend Spectacular. Before I sign off, I want to draw attention to some of our weekly features on WCRB. We select a brand-new recording as our CD of the Week and play samples from it all week long to give you a full picture of what you can expect to hear. Plus, we share lots of extra content about the recording and artist on our website. Also, every Tuesday at noon, we feature a brand-new release on This Just In. It’s a great way for you to find out what’s new from the many small and large record labels around the world. WCRB plays more music than any other radio station in Boston, plus we connect our listeners to what’s happening in and around the city. If you’re a regular listener, thank you; if you’re not, what are you waiting for? 99.5 WCRB is Boston’s Classical Station. Have a happy May! Our region boasts a long tradition of manufacturing. Some of the industries have faded away or sent their work overseas, but WCAI’s newest radio series—Making It Work: Manufacturing on the Cape, South Coast and Islands—found that new technologies have created manufacturing opportunities here, particularly when it comes to highly specialized and technical products. “There’s this idea that Cape Cod and the Islands’ economy is completely driven by tourism and that little or nothing is manufactured here,” says managing editor of news Sean Corcoran. “But not only do companies continue to cater to traditional industries like cranberry farming and shellfishing, there also are new, cutting-edge technology-related businesses that are rapidly growing.” In recent years, the push has been to promote and develop “advanced manufacturing”—making things here that really couldn’t be produced properly elsewhere. For example, in Falmouth and Bourne on Upper Cape Cod, the past several years have seen remarkable growth in industries related What’s on WCAI Advertisement to underwater robots. And that growth has led to the expansion of related businesses, such as aluminum and steel work. Our five-part series also looks at different manufacturing-related businesses on Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. Some of those businesses rely on well-known brands to promote and sell their products, while others say they benefit from the available workforce, a population originally drawn to Nantucket and the Vineyard by the casual island lifestyle. Making It Work: Manufacturing on the Cape, South Coast and Islands will air from May 4 to May 8 during Morning Edition and All Things Considered. Listen online at capeandislands.org.
