BONE YARD BOAT LISTINGS
1947 WINSLOW KETCH 32’ -- PARTHENIA
1948 PICNIC BOAT 32’
1948 PICNIC BOAT 32’. Owner says, “The BODACIOUS
was built in Stonington, ME by Talbott. She draws 3 to 3.5
feet. Lobster style...never worked...family style outing boat.
Last used in 2004. Asking: FREE!
(Continued on Page 12.)
1947 WINSLOW KETCH 32’. Owner says, “I have lost most
of my free time, so I have to give her up. I have had her for
~ 17 years and have just slobbered some paint on her for the
last couple. She is heavily built and an easy balanced single
handed sailor with the way she is rigged. The Main mast is
~56 ’tall (the mizzen is about 32’) and she is looks and feels
twice her size underway. A real smooth ride, Edison steering
locks her in, so you can walk around underway, will miss that.
She can be used as she is or could go for a rebuild of any part
of her you want… (Continued on Page 11.)
1923 ELCO CRUISETTE 34'
1958 DANISH KETCH 36’
1958 DANISH KETCH 36’. Herreshoff Nereia design built in
Kastrup, Denmark. 11' Beam, 5'6" Draft. Mahogany hull and
Cabin Structure, Oak Frames, Teak Deck, Westerbeke Diesel,
22hp, 70's vintage. Asking: FREE! (Continued on Page 11.)
1923 ELCO CRUISETTE 34'. Owner says, "I am the 3rd
owner of the 1923 34' Elco Cruisette 'JERSEY GIRL',
originally(?) named 'WILD GOOSE.' A freshwater boat from
Farmington, Maine, she spent most of her life on blocks and
stands (cold up here!). Sometime in the 1930's she had a
collision, damaging her bow section. Although this was
repaired at a boatyard it resulted in a very minor droop in her
forward section, from the stem to approximately three ribs
back. At some point in the late 1970's… (Continued on Page 11.)

I am sending in my renewal to Bone Yard Boats for my third
year after having scrutinized the Fall 2007 issue for the first of
what will be many times. It is really hard to put down the
newsletter when you see all of the boats available. My
compliments to you on the newsletter and the website, and to
those who assist you in this endeavor.
Subscription Rate: $19.95 for one year (4 issues).
Subscribers can list boats for FREE in Bone Yard Boats!
We will list boats from FREE to $10,000 with rare exceptions.
In August of 2006, I took my wife to a marina in an effort to
de-stress a little and look at some boats for sale. I had
spoken with a salesperson in relation to two or three boats
that were then for sale. We had just arrived when we learned
that there was something of a problem with one of the boats –
it was bow down in the slip and was taking on water, so of
course the salesperson said he would understand if we wanted
to skip that one. There was a sump pump grinding away with
the hose hung through a side window.
Ginger Marshall Martus, Founder & Contributing Writer.
The Bone Yard Boats newsletter was founded in 1996
when Ginger Martus tried to save a single boat from
meeting the business end of a chainsaw.
We remain true to that mission.
Power or sail, wood or fiberglass -- we do not discriminate.
If you know of boats needing rescue, please let us know.
If you have restored a boat, we would love to hear about it.
Let your story be an inspiration to others.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
1940 CHRIS CRAFT ENCLOSED BRIDGE CRUISER – OLE CHRIS
Sorry, this issue is so jam-packed with incredible boats that I
have no room for an Editor letter. I have listed a couple of
boats above the $10k limit due to their historical significance,
such as the 1930 Custom Bridgedeck Cruiser below. – David
Its name is OLE CHRIS and it is a 1940 Chris Craft Enclosed
Bridge Cruiser with a newly rebuilt straight six, Chris Craft
gasoline engine. The interior is Philippine Mahogany, worn
but somehow holding out the prospect that it could be brought
back to a very attractive shine. The marina owner came over
and told me it was a remarkably solid boat. They had called
the owner about the problem, and he was on his way. I was
told that the owner had reached a point where he was
bringing the title over and that he had decided he was
finished. If the boat was not sold, it was going to be
destroyed.
I continued to look and jumped on. I saw what looked like
window crank handles. I cautiously cranked one, and down
rolled one of the side windows. I saw three more crank
handles, two on each side. I peeked forward to see a galley
and an over/under set of bunks and a locker. I opened a door
to port and there was a head. The salon had an interior pilot
station but no flybridge. There was a newish, L-shaped sofa
that supposedly converted into a double bed and provided
storage. I went back to climb out onto the deck. We quickly
went and looked at the other few boats, and I can’t even tell
you what they were. We ended up back at the Chris Craft.
1930 CUSTOM BRIDGEDECK CRUISER 30’ – see Page 11.
1928 ELCO FLAT TOP 42'. Located in Deltaville, VA at
Schroeder Yachts. Owner says, “ She is a project boat, but
not beyond restoration. I sincerely hope you can help me and
save the boat too.” Asking $8,000, “but open to all offers.”
Contact Diane at 910 520-4971 or [email protected].
Diane did not have a picture available by press time, but says
this ELCO resembles TEDDYBOLD, the 1927 ELCO Flat Top 42’
listed in the Winter 2006 issue of Bone Yard Boats.
I made the offer recommended by the salesperson, which was
way below asking price. The deal was struck with the support

1957 RICHARDSON AFT CABIN 43’.
1957 RICHARDSON AFT CABIN 43’. Owner says, “1957
43' Richardson Flush Deck Motor Yacht is reluctantly up for
sale. I have owned and enjoyed my Richardson for the past 16
years. She is currently in the water and being used. I have
reached a point where I can not devote the time to take care
of her. The hull is cedar planks over oak ribs and is in fair to
good condition. The engines are 471 Detriot Desiels and run
well but have over 3500hrs and probably will need rebuilding
in the future. There is also a 4.5 Onan Generator. The decks
are all teak and in good condition. The interior has an aft
cabin with double and single berths, a mid-cabin with twin
bunks, one head with shower, a main saloon and a galley in
the bow area.” Asking $10,000 and “willing to listen to
reasonable offers.” The boat is located on the Seneca-Cayuga

1955 DUNPHY 14’. Owner says, “The boat has been in the
family since it was new. I learned to water ski behind her. It
has been in and out of storage for many years until I moved
back to Michigan and decided to restore. The Dunphy is a 14'
plywood mahogany runabout. I have a 1960 Merc 35 HP with
electric start. Motor runs, has good compression, new plugs,
wires and points. Have a 1960's vintage Merc red metal gas
tank in very good condition. Also have a vintage Merc single
level controls. Still need to get that back together and hooked
up with the new cables. Also included is Plexiglas windshield;
have original brackets but missing the gasketing. All other
hardware is original. I completely sanded the exterior and put
4 coats of Captains varnish on the exterior and 2 coats inside.
Bottom has 4 coats of original Sea Foam Green color paint
from Kirby's. No dry rot but the transom leaks a little. I have
it on a Holsclaw trailer that is in descent shape. Boat and the

1950 BRIX BUILT 27’
Since we pulled her out of the barn 10 years ago, we have
only put about 120 hours on here (new hobbs and engine
instruments then) and only once full throttle for a minute to
see top speed of about 20 mph. She has a sounder with
speed and log. Lots of manuals on everything as well as
receipts and restoration pictures. She runs great. Six (6) boat
screw jack stands ($600) are included for easy removal from
trailer. Yes, the trailer is included and has electric brakes, but,
would need to be looked at before really getting up to

wood boat built by Solomon and Son of Maryland. Boat has
never been in salt water as it was a Lake Erie boat. Bought it
from an estate in Erie. I've had this boat in storage inside

maker to replace top deck and stern. I've never put in water.

generator needs rebuild. Too much life's activities to devote
time to this nice boat. 6 cyl gray marine, new oakum,

1958 YELLOW JACKET RIVIERA 14’. Runabout with a
1957 Evinrude 35 hp motor. Owner says, “My Grandfather
originally purchased a 1957 Yellow Jacket. He went to a lake
just across the State Line in Louisiana (Caddo Lake), which is
known for stumps. You have to understand - my Grandfather
had one speed - full speed ahead. Well, you guessed it; he hit
a stump and tore the transom off of the 1957 Yellow Jacket.
He then went back to the dealership and all they had was a
1958 Yellow Jacket, so he bought it. (Continued next page.)

1958 YELLOW JACKET RIVIERA 14’
“After my father purchased the boat, he refinished the bottom
(yellow part only) of the boat. No other restoration work has
been performed. There is no dry rot nor soft spots in the
boat. The varnish is beginning to flake, but the wood
underneath still appears to be in pretty good condition. The
piping on the seat are beginning to come unsewn. The boat
has the original bent wood seat springs and two flag holders.
“The last time I believe the boat was in the water was
probably in about 1994. It has always been in fresh water no salt water. I recall skiing behind the YJ as a young child.
My Dad loved to put the boat on the water and watch the
heads start turning. He was s-o-o-o-o proud of this boat. It
was really an ‘eye catcher’.” Asking $4,500. Contact Carolyn

1960 THOMPSON SEA COASTER 16’. Owner says, “Here
is the history. This boat was originally sold by the Seattle
Sears and Roebuck. It was manufactured by the Thompson
Boat Company in Moses Lake, WA. This boat has only had
two owners and the original owner was a long time friend of
my Dad's who bought this boat new in 1960. He decided he
wanted a bigger boat and sold this boat to my Dad in 1962. In
the mid 1970's my Father and a neighbor (a trade carpenter
and cabinet maker) put new knee braces in the transom.
Afterwards, my Dad had the Skier 700 hung (1976 Chrysler
Skier 70hp) and put the Calkins trailer under it. It has never
been stored outdoors, has no rot that I am aware of and was
last re-finished in the spring of 2005. The engine is in great
shape, the fuel tanks, lines & filter were new in 2005. I had
her in the water (fresh water) in the summer of 2005. We
used to joke with my Dad that the only thing he took better
care of than this boat was his family. Family always came first
but he loved this boat!” Asking $9,500. Contact Chuck at

2000 lbs less than a typical CCA design by S and S of the same
era. SA is 600 sq.ft. She was built by Tucker Brown for Mr.

Electric brakes but I never hooked them up because I only
pulled her a few miles with my Kenworth. Carb was rebuilt 3

When I winterized her 3 yrs ago I knew a new impeller was
needed. We never had the eng. up over 1000 RPM because
the shaft would vibrate. We put shaft on a lath and found very
small bend. I am sure it can be fixed. The brass prop is

1949 STEPHENS 40’. Owner says, “Beautiful lines, classic
flared bow, quality Stephens construction, nearly all original
including water heater. Hull is solid, refastened a few years
back, diver inspected hull underside. She could use an exterior
touch up, nothing major, original cork tile flooring in kitchen
and berth, fresh cooled chrysler crowns original w/ 50 hours
on rebuilds. I love this boat but my true passion is sailing and
I need her gone to make room for another classic sail. She is
unnamed at the moment. She is beautiful right now, would
like to see all of the touch up cosmetics finished.” San Diego,

“How can you go wrong at that price?” OK, you live and you
learn. The bottom had to be refastened, recaulked and
painted – and the leak repaired – and while that was being
done I had them sand and repaint the hull sides. Someone
had painted over just about all of the original brightwork and
although the boat was hauled in September of 2006, it didn’t
make it back into the water until late April of 2007. Then
there was the hassle of insuring an old wooden boat. I still
need to scrape the paint and restore/preserve the brightwork.

The result was that we took the boat out this summer after we
obtained the insurance. It isn’t fast, about eight to ten knots
tops. However, I filled both fuel tanks up to their sixty-five
gallon combined total, and after thirteen hours of operation I
haven’t used ten to twelve gallons – no fuel gauge, just a
stick. I don’t want to say what I have put into this boat in
terms of money, but including the purchase price… It’s a
paltry sum of money. I guess I could be in a sixteen to
twenty-something footer, canvas-topped I/O somethingorother
doing thirty knots, but it wouldn’t be anywhere near the same.
I’m sending you some of my extra photographs. Take a look,
and if anyone needs any extra incentive to grab up all of these
older wooden boats, recite our story to them.

Richard B.

DINGHY NEWS FROM GINGER…
Guess that's all my Dinghy news that's fit to print right now.
Hope to have more stuff to tell you about in the next issue or
when we see the first crocus. David is doing a great job with
the newsletter so when you see a boat in distress think of
David and let him know about it. Hope 2008 will be a good,
fun and safe boating season for you all.
By Ginger Martus
By the time you read this it will be well into the middle of
winter -- or 'dullsville' in my case. But, we can always look
forward to spring and another busy boat season. Looks like I
won't be as busy as I used to be; you see, I flunked my 'bone
density' test, which tells me I shouldn't jump around the boats
like I used to. In fact, I should be thinking 'Geezerville,' but in
the meantime I still like to talk 'boat talk' and participate as
much as I can.
GINGER MARTUS
BONE YARD BOATS FOUNDER
The big news is that I was
instrumental in finding a new home
for AVOCETTE. This 1930, 48-foot
Huckins was restored by the late
Jerry Bass of New Jersey and went
on to win many awards at classic
boat shows.
When Jerry Bass
suddenly died in July 2005, his wife
Bette became the owner and not
being a 'boat person' like you amd
me, asked if I could find a new home
for AVOCETTE.
I made a few
inquiries and later spoke with a
trustee at the Museum of Yachting in
1960 CHRIS CRAFT SKI BOAT 17'. Owner says, "Another
easy restoration or use as-is. Original 283 engine. No known
rot. Newer upholstery." Asking $10,000. Contact Joel at

Newport, RI. This was before I knew of the merger with the
International Yacht Restoration School. And so it came to
pass that AVOCETTE departed New Jersey on November 15,
2007 at 7:30am and was trucked to Newport where she will be
the Flagship of both organizations.
Briefly, what makes this boat so special is that she was owned
for 52 years by one man, Fred Voges, who was Commodore of
the Port Washington Yacht Club (1943-44) and kept her in
pristine condition. Finally, at age 80 he had to let her go, and
she went from bad to worse from then on until the late Bob
Tiedemann saved her and brought her to Newport where she
slept for several years until Bob heard that Jerry Bass (white
night) was looking for his next restoration project.

So, if you see a 48-foot all mahogany hull with gold on her
transom that says AVOCETTE and hopefully flying the Port
Washington Yacht Club burgee at her bow, you'll know where
she came from.
In December, I drove to Cambridge, Maryland, to visit my
good friend Earl Brannock, and to see the 'work in progress' of
moving his extensive nautical collection into the two-story
brick building, which is now known as the Brannock Education
and Research Center and is a part of the Richardson Maritime
Museum. Yes, the two organizations merged in 2007. A
formal opening is planned for this April. If you're in the area,
stop by and have a look. Located at Maryland Avenue,
Cambridge, MD. You can't miss it!
I have something that's too good to throw out, so it's up for
grabs. First call gets it, and I'll mail it too (609-859-2370). It
is a 6-page printout of 'WWII Construction Records' US Coast
Guard Patrol Boats. Darned if I know how I got this. The
Coast Guard bought 230 new wood hull patrol boats, all the
same type and size -- 83 feet with 76 tons displacement. All
built by Wheeler Shipbuilding of Brooklyn, NY. Includes the
disposition of the boats. Photo of one appeared in the
Jan./Feb. 2005 issue of Woodenboat magazine on page 136.

KNOW A BOAT THAT NEEDS SAVING?
1923 ELCO CRUISETTE 34'. (Continued from Page 1.) …her
original motor was removed (and lost for good) and replaced
with a 6cyl. From that point on she was launched with less
and less frequency, until at last she needed just enough
maintenance to not be launched at all. At this point, she was
sold to the well meaning, but unskilled previous owner who
proceeded to attempt to restore/repair her. Fortunately, very
little was attempted. A few cedar planks removed, a couple of
ribs sistered, and one plank replacement try.
1970 CHRIS CRAFT CATALINA 26’. Hardtop cruiser. 350
Chevy motor. Fiberglass hull. Wood upper deck. Very good
condition. “No reasonable offer refused.” 215-520-9505 (PA)
“Unfortunately, the last action was to throw a tarp over her
port amidships section and left that way for about ten years.
What this resulted in was a very original Cruisette, rotten in an
odd fashion. The bottom 2/3 of the hull/ribs/keel is very
sound and true, with a clean bilge.
But the top 3rd,
particularly the port amidships where the tarp was, is rotten in
various stages.
This boat does requires a complete
restoration, but is such a prime candidate I purchased and
transported her in order to give her a little more time. Totally
complete and original save for the engine, and there are many
extra parts from another Elco, including rudder, steering, and
some bronze & brass. Most if not all of the mahogany is
absolutely fine as is the interior. She was recently transported
with no damage or movement as she is still structurally sound.
As I have plans to move aboard another boat, a restoration is
sadly out of the question for me.”Asking $3,500. Email Geoff

1958 DANISH KETCH 36’ (Continued from Page 1.) Owner
says, “I rescued this boat from the local marina, where the
owner was going to have it cut up because he was losing his
slip. I moved it to a local shed to do some repairs, as it had
deck leaks and rot down low. I have removed several planks
above the keel and the lower ends of the frames are mostly
rotted, as well as many of the floors. The frames are not
broken however, so the lower 12" to 24" could be cut off and
new wood laminated, new floor beams installed, etc.
Alternatively, new bent frames could be installed but would
be more destructive. She also needs replacement of a rotted
forekeel, a rudder repair, and replanking below waterlines.
Then there is waterproofing of the deck so this doesn't happen
again. This is a beautiful boat and should be good for another
50 years - its just too much work for me to accomplish quickly
and the boat draws too much for the skinny waters of Florida's
west coast. It really needs to move to cooler and deeper
waters. The boat is free to a good home. I have purchased
oak, purpleheart and bronze bolts for repairs, which I'd like to
sell for my cost.” FREE! Located in shed, Dunedin FL.

1930 CUSTOM BRIDGEDECK CRUISER 30’
1947 WINSLOW KETCH 32’. (Continued from Page 1.) “The
deck is Southern yellow pine and was 80% traditionally recaulked a few years ago. The Bronze fasteners keep finding
good wood when I put them into the major parts of the hull.
There is an 8 year old Lead overlay covering the lower stem
butt joint. There is another copper piece along the port
Garboard, JIC. I have replaced the entire rudder, Bronze hull
fasteners, Icebox companionway beam, Bow sprit, house
covering trim, hatches, keel bolts that did not need replacing,
main panel wiring, engine stuff, etc. Starboard Aft Bulwarks
are badly checked and wrinkle the paint whenever is it is
coated. She has been showing her age, but her sturdy
traditional lines are priceless. Her complete line drawings are
at Mystic with designer Ralph Winslow’s collection. I believe
there are only a few of these built under the Tusitala design
name. A Solar panel on the Aft deck keeps the tired pair of
batteries up. Extra set of old sails. She is in Bristol ME. The
hydraulic trailer guys hold her securely; she travels over the
road nicely. She sets well on her full iron keel + jack stands.
She draws about 5’6”.” Asking $11,000 OBO/trades. Call

1930 CUSTOM BRIDGEDECK CRUISER 30’. Owner says,
“We'll take all the help we can get in finding her a new home!
She really isn't a "boneyard" case although having been
unused for several years I'm sure the spiders will be sorry to
have to leave. We're completely open to any reasonable
offer/price is VERY negotiable!
“One of a kind classic. She was originally christened the
‘TRIPLE R’ and built by a ship's carpenter named Bert Romine
along the Oakland/Alameda estuary in 1930/31. According to
the nephew, Bert Romine was a carpenter who built her for his
own use and probably to his own design. So now we finally
know her provenance! In a covered slip since 1994. Bottom
completely refastened in 2004. Basically unused in the last
four years. Good engine, may need a little tinkering or a tuneup by now. Hull is Cedar on Oak. Decks are cedar on fir.
Cabin is Teak and Mahogany. Graymarine 40hp. New
electrical system with circuit breaker panel. Located Rio Vista,

1956 THOMPSON SEA SKIFF 15’
1956 THOMPSON SEA SKIFF 15’. Owner says, “This boat
was fully restored 4 years ago, but she could use a fresh coat
of varnish and hull paint. She comes with a vintage 1958
Evinrude Lark 30 HP with electric start. She rides on a vintage
Tee Nee trailer that needs a coat of paint. The boat takes 2-3
days to swell up and after that she's as tight as a drum. Fresh
water use only. This is a great boat at a great price. At 15
feet she handles big water very comfortably and turns heads
wherever you go. Hate to let her go but I already have a 22
