Like other humans, I sometimes struggle to keep focus on the purpose for my trip around the sun. Every now and then I am reminded by a gift from above that arrives in the form of perfect clarity. This type of awakening may also have happened to you on occasion. If so, you know that suddenly everything becomes so clear that you never forget where you were when it happened and in its significance defines or underscores your very purpose for being. Recently, I was part of such a moment. The children had been invited to the corporate office of La-Z-Boy furniture for a Christmas party. La-Z-Boy has been a wonderful partner for our agency and they always go “above and beyond” to make Christmas special for each of our residents. I always get nervous on this day because I want to make sure our children appreciate how special it is, that they remember to use their manners and all the other concerns that go with trying to parent a group of children who are not your own. Feeling a little stressed on the inside, but smiling on the outside, I stood in the center of the room in a futile attempt to interject some order into the proceedings. I was trying to accomplish this feat while surrounded by the chaos of thirty children ripping into gifts that had earlier lined the walls. Sometime during this carnage I noticed Craig Burris, our Director of Financial Development, standing beside me. He leaned in and whispered to me that he had just heard one of our residents say that he had never gotten a pair of shoes that came in a box. We simultaneously imagined that young man’s past experiences and for a short time just couldn’t make eye contact with the other. That simple statement also caused both of us to shuffle through decades in our minds and re-realize how blessed a life we had been given. All of the stress went out of my mind and all I wanted to do was share this story with everyone who had taken time or given money to make this day one that this young man and two not so young men would never forget. I have to believe that one day this young man is going to make sure that the children in his care get a pair of shoes that come wrapped in a box. So, if you contributed in any way to help us make Christmas special please know that your efforts, great or small, had the same kind of effect and you should feel good that part of your purpose is devoted to giving back. Smith Lumber Company WAYS TO GIVE Your contributions have provided a safe and loving home and nurturing care to children for over 85 years. Help ensure that ACH is always here to provide a home for those whose own homes are no longer safe nor loving. You can mail us a check. Send it to American Children’s Home, P.O. Box 1288, Lexington, NC 27293-1288. If you wish to make a gift in honor or in memory of a loved one, please let us know whom to notify. You can gift to us highly appreciated stock through your Stock Broker. You may find you avoid high capital gains taxes through this type giving. Many people have paid up life insurance policies which are no longer needed for the initial beneficiary. You can list us as a beneficiary to a life insurance policy. List “American Children’s Home” as a charitable beneficiary. Make a Legacy Gift – Legacy gifts ensure that the American Children’s Home will continue for many years. You don’t need a large estate to make a legacy gift. Many people of normal means are able to designate a portion of their estate for a loved charity. Your Will should name the “American Children’s Home” as the beneficiary. 7 American Children’s Home >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Memorial Gifts October 1, 2014 — January 31, 2015 * Gifts for Capital Campaign Fund Wayne Abernathy Don and Ann Hedrick Ellen P. One of the PQI goals is to evaluate the effectiveness of our services by using the analysis of nine surveys and to take action if needed. A benchmark of satisfaction for each of the surveys had been established. These surveys are Youth, Daycare Staff, ACH Staff, Department of Social Services, ACH Family, Daycare Family, ACH Stakeholders, Daycare Stakeholders and School Surveys. The benchmarks for the following surveys were not met in 2014: 1) Youth Survey – Corrective Action 127 was created and included increasing the benchmark to 75% and monitoring the residents when they complete the survey to determine if they need assistance. 2) ACH Staff Survey - Corrective Action 128 was created and included repeating the survey in January 2015 to determine the validity of the analysis. 3) The analysis of the DSS Survey did not meet the benchmark in some areas. No corrective action was needed because the satisfaction level in all areas showed tremendous improvement. It was decided to continue with action already in place. A corrective action was also created to track the length of time it takes for residents to begin school after their arrival at ACH. The benchmark of 95% of our residents being enrolled in school within two weeks after their arrival was established. ACH Social Workers and our School Liaison have worked diligently and improvement has occurred. Medication Administration is closely monitored by an 10 ACH Supervisor. The benchmark for medication is 97% in compliance. At the end of the 2014 year, we were at 95% compliance with only one infraction. Medications continue to be tracked daily to correct errors immediately. A “New Hire Safety Checklist” was added to the PQI Plan Schedule as a quarterly report to ensure that all background information and testing is complete before the hire date. We have 14 children in eleven foster care homes. The Foster Care Social Workers have twenty additional homes in the process of being licensed. The Health and Safety Committee works closely with Maintenance to see that all inspections, maintenance requests and preventative maintenance are done on time to ensure that our residents, daycare children and staff have a healthy and safe environment. The Director of Financial Development aided by Assistant Director of Financial Development coordinated activities for our residents, organized fund raising events and diversified our funding streams by researching and applying for grant opportunities. The Vice-President of Business continually monitors our property and liability insurance program, benefit package, telecommunication and technology systems. The census is continually tracked and the yearly average number of residents per day is 32. This is 71.8% occupancy. Providing the best possible care for the children enrolled is the goal of Evans Daycare. The average number of children enrolled is 56. This is 98% occupancy. The Director of Food Service has created a new nutrition program consisting of new menus and recipes certified by a registered dietician to meet USDA guidelines per our licensing agreement. Our training plan exceeds the requirement of 24 hours of training as mandated by the Council on Accreditation and our licensing agreement. For yet another Resident Spotlight article, I would like to introduce you to Savannah Holshouser, our 2.83 GPA graduating senior at Central Davidson High School. Savannah is no exception to the spotlight rule! Recently, she came to the office and shared the news of her senior project – a group of select area students were chosen to participate in the construction of another Habitat House. Upon one of our days of visiting the site, we discovered a group of 11 students along with an instructor, each assigned their own particular job, working diligently to finish their task for that day. Savannah was “pulling wires” – assigned to the electrical duty of “roughing in” the conduit wiring. As we admired her laboring, Savannah made a point in explaining precisely what her job of the day entailed and to say the least, I was very impressed. Upon graduation, Savannah’s immediate plan is to continue her education by enrolling at Davidson County Community College. There she intends to work on her Associates Degree in Art. We wish her only the best in fulfilling her dream - there is no doubt that she will find only success in her journey in life. God’s speed Savannah!
