Gabe Gross, former Auburn University Football and Baseball player Gabe Gross was a three-sport athlete at Northview High School in Dothan, Alabama. He continued as a multi-sport athlete at Auburn University playing football and baseball there. Gabe started nine games at Quarterback as a true freshman during the 1998 season under Coach Terry Bowden. He completed 45% of his passes and threw for 1,222 yards and 7 TDs. Gabe also rushed for 2 TDs during the season. 1999 brought new Coach Tommy Tuberville and Gabe shared time at quarterback with Ben Leard. He threw for 1 TD during the 1999 season. After the 1999 season Gabe concentrated on baseball. He was a 3 year starter as an outfielder for the Auburn baseball team from 1999 – 2001. He was an All American during the 2000 season. Gabe was a career .375 hitter and hit .430 during his All American season. The Toronto Blue Jays drafted Gabe in the 1st round of the 2001 Major League Baseball draft. He enjoyed a seven-year big league career, hitting .239 with 78 doubles, 8 triples, 40 home runs and 186 RBIs while playing for four different teams. Tyrone Prothro, former University of Alabama wide receiver Tyrone Prothro was an All-State football player his junior and senior years at Cleburne County High School where he led his team to consecutive state playoff appearances. Tyrone then moved on to the University of Alabama where he played Wide Receiver and Returned Kicks from 2003-2005. As a freshman, Tyrone played in 9 games and averaged 11.9 yards per catch and had 1 touchdown. He followed that up with an impressive sophomore year averaging 13.9 yards per catch with 2 TDs. Tyrone also ran a kickoff back for a touchdown that year and led the SEC with 26.6 yards per kickoff return. Tyrone had a memorable junior year. In the second game against Southern Miss he made one of the greatest catches of all time. Labeled “The Catch”, Tyrone caught a long pass by Brodie Croyle by trapping the ball behind the head of Southern Mississippi defender Jasper Faulk. The play won the 2006 ESPY award for Best Play as well as several other awards. But just 3 weeks later in a blowout win over Florida Tyrone fractured both major bones in his left leg in a gruesome injury. The terrible injury ended Tyrone’s football career. He has undergone 11 surgeries over the past 10 years, including one in March of this year.
