There are several types of benefits available to OPEIU Midwest United members that are
outlined and explained in this book. This book is organized by the discounted
products/services the benefit provides - such as food discounts, health care savings, and
automobile discounts. Below the levels of discounts are briefly outlined for your
information.
OPEIU Midwest United, Local 2009 members are eligible for ALL of these benefits!
Union Privilege
These benefits are provided by the AFL-CIO. Many discounts and deals are offered, from
discounted car rentals to college scholarships. For general information visit

These benefits are provided by AFL-CIO. These benefits range from savings on theme

PerksCard®
This is a discount service that retailers/corporations join to provide discounts to their
customers. The PerksCard® is provided to all OPEIU Midwest United members as part
of their union membership Members need to register their PerksCard® at
www.perkscard.com
PerksCard® provides benefits that are available locally either by showing your
PerksCard® or by downloading a coupon from the PerksCard® website. Other discounts
are available only through the website.

Automobile benefits are available for members for everything from buying a new car to
getting your car washed or serviced. These benefits and others are outlined below.
1. Purchasing a New or Used Car
*Union Plus Auto Buying Discount
Includes purchases of new and used cars, RVs, boats, motorcycles, commercial, and
agricultural vehicles.
Through the program, OPEIU Midwest United members will receive pre-negotiated,
best-market pricing on new or used vehicles (cars, trucks, commercial, agricultural, RVs,
boats, motorcycles, etc.) without having to negotiate with the dealer. A personal Vehicle
Advisor will assist members throughout the entire buying or leasing process, from
selection to final delivery.
Program Features
▪ Pre-negotiated fleet pricing on most new vehicles purchased or leased through the
program - typically 2 to 3 percent over dealer invoice.
▪ Used vehicle pricing at 4 percent over the cost of the vehicle at auction, plus dealer
preparation.
▪ Assistance from the program’s Vehicle Advisors throughout the process.
How the Program Works
Before visiting a dealer, please contact Vehicle Advantage at:
www.vehicleadvantage.com or call 866-824-1133. When requested, please refer to
Group ID number RU-502
The program helps members save by using pre-negotiated fleet pricing for new and used
vehicles at dealers across the country. Once the member submits a vehicle order form,
the Vehicle Advisor assists the member in selecting a new or used vehicle and options.
The Vehicle Advisor will then locate the vehicle at a dealer in the member’s area and
negotiate a price based on fleet pricing for new vehicles and at near auction cost for used
vehicles. The dealer signs a contract agreeing to the price and the Vehicle Advisor
reports the pre-negotiated price to the member. Once the details are acceptable to the
member the Vehicle Advisor sets up a mutually agreeable delivery appointment between
the member and the dealer. The member then goes to the dealership and inspects and test
drives the vehicle and the transaction and delivery is completed.
If the member decides not to purchase that vehicle, they may start the process again with
the Vehicle Advisor.
While the program can provide an excellent value for a vast majority of members, it may
not appear to provide the lowest price for those members who want to take the time to
haggle from dealer to dealer. Also, some vehicles may be in such demand that they
require premium pricing. However, even for buyers who make car buying a sport, the
program can provide an excellent price point to start from.

Union members enjoy up to 25% in savings via rental car discounts from Budget and
Avis. Avis and Budget rental car savings vary depending on the type of car or vehicle,
time of year, location and length of car rental.

TIP! Instant Savings: Calling or ordering your rental cars online in advance also
means you pay less than at the counter -- and you can upgrade to a better car for only a

confirmation for your records and to reference when you pick up your car from the Avis
or Budget Car Rental location.

Safety Net
The card also offers a special safety net for disabled workers and others facing financial
hardship and a unique union benefits for laid off workers or workers on strike.
For workers on strike:
Strike skip-payment plan available to members of most unions during unionsanctioned strikes or lockouts of 30 consecutive days or more, as long as the
account is in good standing. (Finance charges continue to accrue, but no penalty
fees apply.) You can skip up to three consecutive months in a row, and a total of
four months in a year.
To access the benefit: Call 1-800-622-2580 to discuss your situation with a
customer care representative.
You must make a payment after the third consecutive strike skip month and then
you can access the fourth skip month. During each skip-payment month, you must
notify the bank that the strike is going on and that you intend to exercise the strike
skip-payment option.
For laid off workers:
Skip up to two monthly payments a year, as long as the account is in good
standing. (Finance charges continue to accrue, but no penalty fees apply.)
To access the benefit: Call 1-800-622-2580 during each month for which you
want to skip a payment. You must notify the bank you want to skip a payment,
unless it is offered to you on your statement.
The Union Plus Credit Card Program has expanded the safety net designed to assist union
member cardholders facing financial hardship. With unique protections like these
designed especially for working Americans, Union Plus offers a credit card unlike any
other available to union members.

Lifeline Trust*- assists members who experience a significant loss of income due to a
long-term illness or prolonged disability.
Disaster Relief Fund- helps members affected by a natural disaster.
Secured credit card- helps build and repair credit.
Free credit counseling- helps members get control of their finances and develop a budget.
Consumer credit education- helps members understand and manage borrowing, spending
and credit.

The union member must:
1. Have experienced an illness or disability within the last 12 months that has kept
him/her out of work for at least 90 days. (Or been a victim of a natural disaster that has
occurred within the last 12 months.)
2. Have experienced a significant income loss or financial hardship.
3. Have been a Union Plus Credit Cardholder for at least 12 months and have opened the
account prior to the date of the illness, disability or natural disaster and have an account
in good standing.
4. Document his/her circumstances and income loss.
To apply:
Call the Lifeline Trust Helpline at 1-877-761-5028 to speak directly with a
specially trained Lifeline Trust representative. Representatives in the United
States handle all customer service calls to the Union Plus Credit Card Program.
The Lifeline Trust is a $3.7 million fund administered by Union Privilege, which
brings member benefits to members of AFL-CIO unions. Union Privilege and
HSBC, the company providing the credit card program, established the fund.
Some 3.1 million union members carry the union-endorsed Union Plus Credit
Card, making it the largest membership credit card program in the world.

2. Credit Counseling
*The Union Plus Credit Counseling program was designed exclusively for union
members and their families. The program helps members learn more effective ways to
manage money and ways to save for the future.
Free Initial Counseling Session
Union Plus Credit Counseling program will provide members with a free one-hour
initial counseling session. During that session members will receive:
A complete financial review and budget analysis;
Advice on how to work with creditors;
A written action plan with timelines for reaching their goals;
Referrals to appropriate organizations/programs that may be able to help them (if
needed).
Debt Management Plan (DMP)
If members need additional assistance, a counselor will work with them to develop a
DMP to reduce their debt liabilities. For a small fee, MMI will negotiate with the
member’s creditors on their behalf, disburse the member’s funds to creditors on their
behalf, and work with creditors to stop the collection calls.
Members will receive a 33 percent union-member-only discount off the initiation
fee.
Certified Money Management Volunteer Program
Through the Union Plus Credit Counseling provider, Money Management, International
(MMI), union activists can participate in the national effort designed to train and certify
you to present financial education seminars to union members.

homeowner loan. Members can take advantage of competitive interest rates and special
assistance during strikes or layoffs that they won't find from other lenders. Union Plus

5. Tax Preparation

Union members and their families can use this online tax tool to prepare at
www.unionplusrefund.com - at half the cost of similar services from H&R Block® and
Quicken®.
You can file your federal return for $14.95 and your state return for $14.95 for a total
cost of $29.90.
If your adjusted gross income is below $29,000, you can file both your federal and state
returns for 14.95. Note: the income levels to qualify for free federal tax return files
change on a yearly basis. Please check www.unionplusrefund.com to find the most up to
date pricing and free file information.
This service along with the built-in e-filing means you could get your refund within a
couple weeks - and unlike many other tax preparers, there are no high-cost "rapid refund"
service fees.
With this simple and easy-to-use service, the online tax preparation tool automatically
calculates your taxes and helps minimize errors. You can save information and start
again later, so you don't have to complete your tax returns all at one time. Year-to-year
information is also saved so you can import information from a prior year's return.
You are not charged until you either file or print your return.

Your union membership entitles you to enroll for no-cost coverage for accidental death
and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance:

while commuting or traveling anywhere in the world.

4. UnionSecure Supplemental Insurance
Members can enroll/purchase these supplemental insurance programs designed especially
for union members and their families. The programs are underwritten by The Hartford, a
leading life insurance company in the United States.
Union Secure offers two types of life insurance:
-Term Life
Provides the highest benefit at the lowest cost. You pay a premium for coverage over a
specific period of time (a term) of one, five or ten years - or to a specific age, such as
70. At the end of your term, your policy ends. Death benefits are paid only if you die
within that term of years.
TIP! Because the premiums for term insurance can be low, but the payout is typically
high, young and middle-aged people benefit greatly from term life's economical
coverage.
-Whole Life
Whole life insurance provides lifelong coverage – to age 95, 100 and even beyond.
The most common type is called "ordinary life" insurance.
*Pay the same premiums for as long as you live. For this reason, premiums are typically
higher than term life premiums for the same amount of coverage. But your premium
rates remain the same for the duration of your policy.
*Whole life insurance also builds cash value – a savings account within the policy
increases over time on a tax-deferred basis.
TIP! A policy with cash values may also be used as collateral for a loan. If you
borrow from your life insurance policy, the rate of interest is shown in your policy. Any
money which you owe on a policy loan would be deducted from the benefits, if you were

*Union Plus Scholarship Program
Since 1992, the Union Plus Scholarship Program has awarded more than $2 million to
students of working families who want to begin or continue their secondary education.
Over 1,300 families have benefited from our commitment to higher education. The
Union Plus Scholarship Program is offered through the Union Plus Education
Foundation.
Scholarship award amounts: The amount of the award ranges from $500 - $4,000. This
is a one-time cash award sent to individual winners for undergraduate study beginning in
the fall of the same year.
How to apply: The 2010 application will be available in September 2009

Who is Eligible:
Members of AFL-CIO unions participating in any Union Plus program, spouses and
dependent children (foster children, step children, and any other child for whom the
individual member provides greater than 50% of his or her support)

students are not eligible.
Evaluation criteria:
-Applications are first reviewed by a panel of independent career professionals.

Each scholarship has a total maximum value of $2,000.00

or graduate student in one of the following areas of study:

Full Time Scholarships:
Twelve full-time scholarships will be awarded on the basis of at least 1 per region and not
to exceed 1 per family for a lifetime. Applications are open to members in good standing,
associate members or to their children all of whom must meet the eligibility requirements
and comply with the rules and regulations as established by the OPEIU Executive Board.
Each scholarship is $1,250.00 per year for a total maximum of $5,000.
Part Time Scholarships:
Six part-time scholarships will be awarded on the basis of at least 1 per region and not to
exceed 1 per family for a lifetime. Applications are open to members in good standing,
associate members or to their children all of whom must meet the eligibility requirements
and comply with the rules and regulations as established by the OPEIU Executive Board.
Each scholarship is $500.00 per year for a total maximum value of $2,000.00.
Part-time scholarships are defined as a minimum of 3 credits and no more than 2 courses
If a part-time student does not attend a college/university each semester, they have 2
years maximum to use the part time scholarship.
If the student becomes a full time student, while receiving a part-time student
scholarship, the scholarship will be revoked and they will be able to apply for a full-time
scholarship.
Part-time scholarship awards shall be subject to all other eligibility rules under this
scholarship fund.
The applicant must be:
-A member or associate member of OPEIU in good standing on the date of award, unless
a member loses employment to study on a full-time basis, retires, becomes disabled, or
terminated from employer layoffs and plant closings.
-The son, daughter, stepchild, or legally adopted child of an OPEIU member in good
standing or an associate member.
-High school senior or High school graduate entering a college, university, or a
recognized Technical, Vocational or Post Secondary school as a full time or part time
student.
-Presently in a college university, or a recognized Technical, Vocational or Post
Secondary school as a full time or part time student.
Requirements:
Each applicant must file an official OPEIU scholarship fund application. Application
forms must be endorsed by the Local Union President or Secretary-Treasurer attesting
that a member, a parent of an applicant, or an associate member is in good standing on

National Labor College Scholarship. The scholarship program is sponsored by the Union
Plus Education Foundation and administered by the George Meany Center. The
Foundation's donation to The National Labor College represents the largest financial aid
