An Emergency Response Training program was conducted for four of its commercial properties (Alfardan Centre, Alfardan Towers, Alfardan Plaza, and Burj Al Gassar) in late 2013 and in the beginning of 2014, Alfardan Properties’ designated Fire Wardens, Assistant Fire Wardens and an Emergency Response Team composed of staff for each development and taught them proper emergency response procedures. Their knowledge was put to the test via emergency evacuation drill conducted a few days after their training. Tenants of residential properties (Alfardan Towers, One Porto Arabia, Al Sadd Residence, Al Jazeera Residence, and 28 Apartments), on the other hand, underwent training on Emergency Evacuation Procedures in January of this year. Aside from fire safety, the sessions also discussed effective response measures to earthquakes, flooding, and power failure. Alfardan Properties’ Safety and Security Department will continue to conduct such trainings and implement additional measures to prepare tenants well for any and all natural or man-made emergencies and protect their premises as well. For the company, today is the best time to get ready for the challenges of tomorrow. 8 9 Ingredients: 1 ⅓ cup fresh cream 1/5 cup milk 1 cup orange juice 1 piece of orange zest 1 piece of lemon zest 1 piece of lime zest 300 gram rhubarbs 10 gram of caster sugar 40 gram of sugar 1 gelatine sheet Citrus panna cotta with roasted rhubarb Method: Soak the gelatine sheet in cold water. Boil the fresh cream and milk along with the orange, lemon and lime zests and keep boiling for approximately 1 minute. Add the soaked gelatine and mix for a bit. Remove from the heat and transfer in a bowl. Put the bowl in the fridge until it cools down. When the bowl gets cold, pour the mix into flexible panna cotta forms and keep in the freezer. Cut the rhubarbs in pieces of approximately 2cm and place them in a baking tray. Sprinkle over with the caster sugar and drizzle with the orange juice. Roast the rhubarb in the oven for 8-10 minutes. Serving: Take the panna cotta from the freezer and remove the forms. Place them in the fridge for defrosting. When the panna cotta is ready, plate it and accompany with the roasted rhubarbs and optionally some slices of strawberry. 10 11 HHEELLPPYYOOUURRCCHHIILLDD BBUUIILLDDSSEELLFF--EESSTTEEEEMM As parents, we want our children to excel in their studies, become successful in their chosen career paths and lead happy lives. This can be achieved by developing a healthy self-esteem in your child, as it is considered a roadmap to his/her healthy mental growth, development of emotional and intelligent quotient, and overall happiness as an adult. Although building self-esteem is a lifelong process, parents lay its foundation during childhood. All these will enhance his/her ability to face and overcome all the challenges in life. Here are a few simple steps that can help your child build his/her self-esteem: Parents’ unconditional love for their child goes a long way in boosting his/her self-esteem. This can be done by showering cuddles, kisses, gifts and undivided attention as well as by telling them how much they are loved. This does not mean to raise a spoilt child. Correct them when required but do tell them that it is not them but their behaviour that is unacceptable. On the other hand, always make an effort to encourage and celebrate their accomplishments, as it will enhance his/her sense of self-worth. Acknowledge each and every task done by your child, as they also respond well to encouragement and praise just like adults. 12 Always motivate your child to take healthy risks such as sampling a different food, making new friends, or trying new activities. All this will help him/her build talent for discovery and exploration, develop emotional aptitude to handle success and failure, and foster independence and confidence. Lastly, avoid comparisons, as these remarks can have a negative effect on a child and he/she may lose his/her self worth. Always appreciate a child’s individuality. There is no standard formula to build a positive self-esteem of a child. However, implementing these steps in regular routine will go a long way in boosting confidence of a young, impressionable mind. 13 Your Health Matters Birds are chirping, flowers are blooming, gardens are vibrant, and the weather is inviting. It is time to eliminate the ‘winter blues’ from our homes and make it spic-and-span for upcoming spring parties. We understand your need to spring clean your home without dedicating too much time, so here are some of our handy tips that will help you get a sparkling home in no time. Begin by cleaning carpets, rugs, upholstery and doormats, using vacuum cleaners, carpet shampoos, or moistened cloth. Alternatively, shake them outside or air them for few hours in the sun for fresh odour. Keep all items such as books, souvenirs, and photo frames where they belong. De-clutter your home by throwing away broken objects and giving away unwanted items. Dust and wipe all surfaces, doors, windows, and light bulbs to make them sparkle. Wash or dry clean mattress pads, pillow covering, pillows, quilts, bed linens, table clothes and curtains. You may put on new ones, representing spring mood to give a new and refreshing feel to your home. Organize your wardrobes and drawers by placing spring clothes and keeping away winter clothing. Here also are some quick tips to avoid potential risk of injuries while doing your spring-cleaning. Protect your lower back when lifting heavy loads by bending at knees and not at hips or lower back. Be sure to get help when lifting or moving heavy objects. Abstain from prolonged deep squatting, instead kneel on alternating knees and whenever possible, sit. 14 15 & STRESS OUT YOUR BODY MIND IN 10 MIN There are a number of relaxation techniques that can help you manage stress and also improve your concentration, productivity and overall well-being. If you need help, ask a therapist or counselor. He or she can offer more detailed instructions and coaching to help you perfect these techniques. T O GET STARTED • • • • • Find a quiet, relaxing place, where you will be alone for 10-20 minutes to do these exercises. The techniques work best if there are no distractions Practice once or twice a day Stick with the technique that works best for you. Not every technique will work for every person Keep trying. Don‘t worry if you don‘t notice a major change immediately. You may need to practice for a few weeks before you begin to feel the benefits Try one or more of the techniques described below PROGRESSIVE MUSCLE RELAXATION This technique can help you relax the major muscle groups in your body. And, it‘s easy to do. VISUALIZATION This technique uses your imagination, a great resource when it comes to reducing stress. 1. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Sit in a favorite chair or lie down 2. Begin with your facial muscles. Frown hard for 5-10 seconds and then relax all your muscles 3. Work other facial muscles by scrunching your face up or knitting your eyebrows for 5-10 seconds. Release. You should feel a noticeable difference between the tense and relaxed muscles 4. Move on to your jaw. Then, move on to other muscle groups – shoulders, arms, chest, legs, etc. – until you‘ve tensed and relaxed individual muscle groups throughout your whole body 1. Sit or lie down in a comfortable position 2. Imagine a pleasant, peaceful scene, such as a lush forest or a sandy beach. Picture yourself in this setting 3. Focus on the scene for a set amount of time (any amount of time you are comfortable with), then gradually return to the present MEDITATION This is the process of focusing on a single word or object to clear your mind. As a result, you feel calm and refreshed. 1. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Sit or lie in a relaxing position 2. Close your eyes and concentrate on a calming thought, word or object 3. You may find tht other thoughts pop into your mind. Don‘t worry, this is normal. Try not to dwell on them. Just keep focusing on your image or sound 4. If you‘re having trouble, try repeating a word or sound over and over. (Some people find it helpful to play soothing music while meditating.) 5. Gradually, you‘ll begin to feel more and more relaxed 16 DEEP BREATHING One of the easiest ways to relieve tension is deep breathing. 1. Lie on your back with a pillow under your head. Bend your knees (or put a pillow under them) to relax your stomach 2. Put one hand on your stomach, just below your rib cage 3. Slowly breathe in through your nose. Your stomach should feel like it‘s rising 4. Exhale slowly through your mouth, emptying your lungs completely and letting your stomach fall 5. Repeat several times until you feel calm and relaxed. Practice daily Once you are able to do this easily, you can practice this technique almost anywhere, at any time. 17 ALFARDAN SPORTS DAY 2014 Employees of Alfardan Properties compete in Alfardan Group’s 2014 sports festival Employees of Alfardan Properties participated in the annual Sports Day hosted by Alfardan Group of companies at the Al Ahli Sports Club in Doha on February ,11 2014. Hundreds of employees from different subsidiaries of the Group turned up to join various friendly sports games and recreational activities lined up for the one-day event. The Group organized the festival in support of Qatar’s yearly National Sports Day. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, Emir of Qatar, issued Emiri Decree No. 80 declaring the annual celebration of National Sports Day in the entire country. The national holiday is celebrated every February 2nd of the year. Qatar is one of the few nations in the world to dedicate a special Day of Sports. Teams from Alfardan Properties played in different competitions including football, basketball, volleyball, cricket, badminton, swimming, marathon, and tennis. The families of the employees also got a chance to join in many games and activities such as an obstacle course, relay races, and the -100meter dash. Organizers composed of the Group’s management and employees also designated a leisure area for children. 18 19 Alfardan opens newly renovated ‘The Gathering’ restaurant with new signature burgers The management of Alfardan Properties Management has unveiled the renovated ‘The Gathering’ poolside restaurant which marked its major comeback earlier in January at the Alfardan Gardens Clubhouse with two much-awaited signature dishes: ‘The Gathering Burger’ and ‘Al Gassar Burger.’ The reopening was organized by the Marketing and Communications Department and attended by Alfardan Gardens’ homeowners. What set The Gathering apart are its contemporary designs and warm colors that provide exceptional comfort to its diners. The restaurant’s new trademark burgers were made for the exclusive enjoyment of Alfardan Gardens’ residents and guests, and have put it farther ahead of its competitors. ‘The Gathering Burger,’ a lamb burger, brings a twist of Asian flavor and Greek taste together. One can taste the Asian influence in its well-selected spices, while its traditional Tzatziki Sauce and Feta Cheese provide an authentic Greek flavor. ‘Al Gassar Burger,’ on the other hand, is stuffed with smoked cheese made even crispier with bacon crust. It is best served with French fries or low-calorie salad. 20 21 Upcoming Events at Alfardan Properties Egg crown EARTH HOUR What you need: • White cardboard (enough for the hat strip and decorations) • Scissors • A stapler • Textas • Glue • Decorative items of your choice: we used sequins, fake jewels and washi tapes, but glitter, paint or paper collage will also work. Activity: 1. Gather all the tools and supplies need to make the Eater egg crown 2. Cut the cardboard lengthways into a thin strip around 10 cm thick 3. Wrap it around your child’s head to measure the size, hold in place when you take it off their heads and staple into place 4. Cut out some cardboard egg shapes, both small and large, as well as a bunny Have your child decorate the eggs and bunny with texts and the embellishments 5. Staple the bunny onto the front of the overlapping stapled part of the crown (this will hide the staples) 6. Place a small egg on either side of the bunny and secure these with a staple. Repeat with a larger one, then a smaller one. Continue as close together or as spread out as you wish until the crown is finished 7. Let them wear their handmade crown with pride!
