History & Historical Attractions
THE WABASH RIVER BEGINS NEAR FT. RECOVERY, OHIO AS A TINY STREAM AND
FLOWS MANY MILES INTO THE OHIO RIVER. THE NAME “WABASH” COMES FROM
OUABACHE OR WAH-BA-SHIKA-KI, A FRENCH/NATIVE AMERICAN INTERPRETATION
THAT ROUGHLY TRANSLATES TO “CLEAR WATER OVER WHITE STONES.”
WABASH RIVER
Along the mighty banks of the Wabash
The Native Americans were the first to discover
the beauty of the Wabash Valley. Then the French
arrived in the early 1700s, establishing a trading
post at Ouiatenon, and changes began in the valley.
Tecumseh and his brother the Prophet established
the headquarters for their confederation at
Prophetstown to try and preserve the Native
American way of life. This led to the Battle of
Tippecanoe in 1811. Within five years, Indiana
became a state and the settlers arrived.
One of these early settlers was William Digby,
who platted Lafayette in May of 1825 and
named it after the Marquis de Lafayette.
Tippecanoe County was formed in 1826 and
Lafayette was named as its county seat.
West Lafayette was platted in the river bottoms in
1836. However, it soon became apparent the flood
plain was not the place to develop a town and
plans were moved to the top of the hill.
Our community continued to grow
and in 1869 Purdue University was
founded. The university has played an
important part in the development
of Lafayette—West Lafayette. Today,
we are a diversified community
with agriculture, manufacturing,
merchandising, education and
transportation.

TIPPECANOE BATTLEFIELD
200TH ANNIVERSARY
THE FARM AT
PROPHETSTOWN
Fort Ouiatenon (wee-ah-teh-non),
named for the Wea tribes in the area,
was established by the French in
1717 as a fur trading post. It was one
of the earliest settlements in what
was to become the State of Indiana.
Archaeology and research show that
the area was home to approximately
2,000 - 3,000 inhabitants during its
most profitable times. The replica
blockhouse, built in 1930, is open
weekends mid May—August from 1 to
5 p.m. Picnic facilities are also available.
The park also hosts the annual Feast
of the Hunters’ Moon festival each fall.
Programs and tours may be arranged
through the Tippecanoe County
Historical Association.
TIPPECANOE BATTLEFIELD AND MUSEUM
200 Battle Ground Avenue, Battle Ground
765-567-2147, www.tippecanoehistory.org
A National Historic Landmark, located in a 96-acre park
setting in Battle Ground, complete with picnic areas, nature
center, historic and scenic hiking trails. The 85-foot marble
obelisk monument was erected in 1908 and marks the site
of the November 7, 1811, Battle of Tippecanoe between
the United States’ forces, led by William Henry Harrison,
and representatives of Tecumseh’s Native American
confederation. A museum tells the story of the battle with
exhibits, a fiber-optic map of the action and information
about the dynamic leaders—Tecumseh, Harrison and The
Prophet. Programming and guided tours may be arranged
through the Tippecanoe County Historical Association.
The museum is open 6 days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
closed Wednesdays and the first two weeks in January.
Admission is charged. The park hosts the annual Indiana
Fiddlers' Gathering in June.
TIPPECANOE COUNTY COURTHOUSE
301 Main Street, Lafayette
www.tippecanoecountycourthouse.com
The Courthouse is on the National Register of Historic
Places and is truly a treasure. Built in the 1880s, this
third local courthouse was requested by the citizens to be
“of permanent and durable character.” Residents wanted
a building that would show the pride they had in their
county and filled 45 pages with instructions on how their
wishes should be carried out. It has served the community
for over 125 years, and with the carefully researched and
implemented $15 million renovation in the mid-1990s,
it will do so for many years to come. A self-guided tour
brochure is available online, and group tours can be
arranged. The courthouse houses the permanent collection
of Round the Fountain Art Fair works.

TAPAWINGO PARK
100 Tapawingo Drive N., West Lafayette, 765-743-7465
Dedicated to the conservation of gray wolves, Wolf Park is a
non-profit organization that offers a unique opportunity to
experience wolves up close. Since 1972, Wolf Park’s staff has
studied wolf behavior and educated the public, school groups of
all ages and many dog enthusiasts about wolf conservation and
behavior. The park offers general programming, often including
a guided tour to learn about this endangered and misunderstood
species. Visitors can see wolves, coyotes, foxes and a small herd
of American bison. Howl Nights offer visitors a chance to howl,
and to hear the lovely tones of the wolves in reply. Primary
open season runs May 1 to Nov. 30. Howl Nights are offered on
Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. year round and also on Friday evenings
from May through November.
