A place in History
1907
1906
Brooklands, the world’s first
purpose-built motor racing
circuit, was built by local
landowner Hugh Locke King
on 330 acres of farm and
woodland on his estate at
Weybridge in Surrey. Work
commenced in late 1906.
A few days after the
ceremonial opening of the
Motor Course in June 1907,
the motor-racing pioneer,
Selwyn Francis Edge, used
the Track for establishing a 24
hour record, covering 1,581
miles at an average speed of
almost 66 miles an hour. This
record stood for 17 years.
In September 1907 a 100 mile
massed start cycle race was
held, looking ahead to the
great massed start cycle racing
events at Brooklands of the
1930s.
1921
Throughout the 1920s the
British Automobile Racing
Club continued to organise
big popular race meetings,
including the Junior Car Club’s
famous 200 Miles Race, which
first began in 1921.
1937 Start of the bicycle 100km race
1913
On the morning of 15th
February 1913, in front of
a large crowd of press
and public, the small but
courageous Brooklands
racing driver, Percy Lambert,
achieved 103.84 mph.

1926
In August 1926 the RAC
organised the first-ever British
Grand Prix, constructing sand
chicanes along the Finishing
Straight. The Junior Car Club
200 Miles Race was run again
later that year and the race
was won by Major Henry
Segrave in a Talbot. A second
British Grand Prix was held at
Brooklands in 1927.

1930s
1938
Another land speed record car
simply called ‘The Railton’ was
a technological masterpiece
designed by Reid Railton and
built at Thomson & Taylor’s
Brooklands workshops. It was
commissioned and driven
by the Brooklands ace, John
Rhodes Cobb, who took the
Land Speed Record in it in
1938, 1939 and again in 1947
when he became the first man
to exceed 400 mph on land.
1939
1931
1949
Dramatic speed record
breaking attempts continued
in the 1920s, from the
hundreds of class records
and time trials to the more
glamorous world records.
Based in their Brooklands
workshops, Thomson & Taylor
went on to design and build
several land speed record cars
including three of Malcolm
Campbell’s ‘Blue Birds’. It
was Campbell that called in
Reid Railton to re-design the
chassis and transmission of
his 1931 Napier-engined Blue
Bird.
The government could not
see its way to releasing
Brooklands until 1949 and
consequently the shareholders
of Brooklands (Weybridge) Ltd
voted in favour of selling the
track to Vickers-Armstrong Ltd
in 1946 and motor racing at
Brooklands gradually became
no more than a memory.
The BARC held its last ever
meeting at Brooklands on 7th
August 1939. With the outbreak
of World War Two the
aerodrome was requisitioned
by the government and
devoted to the production of
Vickers and Hawker aircraft
including Hurricane fighters
and Wellington bombers.

HISTORIC ROUTES
Railton Place has strong historical
links with the neighbouring
Brooklands Racing Circuit
and lies within the Brooklands
Conservation Area. The
Brooklands Circuit, including the
embankment adjacent to Railton
Place, is owned by the Brooklands
Museum Trust and is a scheduled
Ancient Monument of national
and international significance.
Brooklands was the world’s first
purpose built motor racing circuit.
An access tunnel known as the
‘Competitors Tunnel’ is located
within the embankment with its
entrance forming a historic feature
visible from Railton Place. As
the name suggest, the tunnel was
the main access for Competitors
to enter the Brooklands circuit
in the period when the circuit
was a motor racing venue. The
Competitors Tunnel entrance has
not been used by vehicles since
motor racing ceased in 1939. The
tunnel entrance adjacent to Railton
Place remained bricked up for
many years. The careful restoration
by skilled craftsmen of this iconic
and historic landmark forms an
important visual centre piece to the
development at Railton Place. This
work has been carried out in close
partnership with English Heritage
and the Brooklands Museum Trust.
It has been essential from the
outset that this new development
embraced the historical
importance of its location within
the Brooklands Conservation Area
and the close proximity of the
Brooklands Circuit embankment.
We are proud that both the
Brooklands Museum Trust and
English Heritage have been fully
supportive of Railton Place.
