Can the eagles do anything easily?
OCT 31 Donald Heath Read more about what Don has to say about GSU football at his blog. Go to savannahnow. com/sports Can the Eagles do anything easily? A murderous stretch against three Southern Conference frontrunners in a four-game period ended poorly for Georgia Southern with three losses by a total of four points. So the Eagles were looking forward to their vacation, err football game, in the Smoky Mountains against lowly Western Carolina last week. And what happens? How about another overtime win after a 28-point fourth-quarter rally. “Hopefully, that’s the one we’ll look back on and say, ‘Hey, that’s the game we turned the corner on,’ ” GSU coach Chris Hatcher said. The litmus test comes Saturday in Charleston, S.C., against The Citadel. GSU (4-4, 2-3 SoCon) still entertains postseason aspirations and holds out hope that the Football Championship Subdivision playoff committee will factor in the Eagles’ competitive play against the divisions’ top teams. But regardless, there are still three games to play, and finishing the season on a fourwin high would be a positive note for the plethora of freshmen and underclassmen returning next season. Hatcher sent out another note to his team during the week — call it an overtime reminder. His players will do things his way. Running back Samair Baker and wide receivers Demarcus Watts and Nick Bass didn’t and were dismissed from the program Monday. It’s been a season of drama on and off the field for GSU. Nothing will be easy ahead. The Citadel (3-5, 1-4 SoCon) was ranked as high as No. 12 in the national polls this season. Samford, the Eagles’ homecoming opponent Nov. 8, is a far better team than anyone expected, and Furman (Nov. 15 in Greenville, S.C.) remains a top 25 team. Hatcher and his assistants are getting accustomed to working overtime. “I think we’re very close to getting back to where we want to be as a football program and a football team and hopefully (the Western Carolina win) took us in the right direction,” Hatcher said. © 2008, Savannah Morning News Week 10 Who: Georgia Southern Eagles (4-4, 2-3 SoCon) at The Citadel Bulldogs (3-5, 1-4 SoCon) Kickoff: 1 p.m. Television: None GSU Radio: WTKS 1290 AM (Savannah), WPMX 102.9 FM (Statesboro) gallery To see more GSU photos, go to spotted.savannahnow.com and savannahnow.com/sports. Offense: Advantage, Georgia Southern The Eagles keep chugging along — 38 points against Western Carolina, 36 against Appalachian State, 52 against Chattanooga and 37 against Wofford. Seems like they should better than 2-2 in those four games. It could’ve been 1-3 had they not equaled the greatest comeback in Footballl Championship Subdivision history. GSU backup quarterback Lee Chapple wore a protective boot because of a sprained right ankle and saw limited practice time this week. Running back Samair Baker and wide receivers Demarcus Watts and Nick Bass, all freshmen, have been kicked off the team. Still, Southern has more weapons than The Citadel, which has averaged just 18.5 points a game during a demoralizing four-game losing streak. Bulldogs’ wide receiver Andre Roberts may be the best player on the field for both squads. Defense: Advantage, Georgia Southern *- denotes Southern Conference game Georgia Southern’s defense gets kicked and kicked then, inexplicably like Popeye downing a can of spinach, bows up and becomes a force. The Eagles may have played their best defensive game despite allowing 31 points to Western Carolina last Saturday. They surrendered only five first downs, 48 yards and no points in the second half after giving up 24 in the first half. Getting pressure on the quarterback will be one of the game’s keys and linebacker Chris Covington and defensive end Dakota Walker have combined for 11 sacks this season. The Citadel schedule Intangibles: Advantage, Georgia Southern Aug. 30 Sept. 6 Sept. 20 Sept. 27 This has been a disappointing season for The Citadel which hoped to improve on a 7-4 record a year ago. The season started well with three wins during the first four games but has disintegrated after losses to Elon, Appalachian State, Furman and Samford. The Bulldogs trailed App 41-7 at halftime. They were down 28 and 21 points after three quarters to Furman and Samford respectively. GSU usually struggles in Charleston, winning four of the seven meetings, but twice needing big comebacks.
