Savvy Generation Y Hiring Strategies
Members of the so-called Generation Y, also known as Millennials, are the labor pool from which
companies will draw most of their employees in the coming years. To gain insight into what matters most to
these individuals when it comes to their jobs, Robert Half International and Yahoo! HotJobs recently
commissioned a national survey of more than 1,000 workers, ranging in age from 21 to 28. Based on those
findings, here are some tactics you can use to bolster your recruitment efforts among the Millennial
generation:
Show them the money. Asked to rank the importance of 11 factors relating to job opportunities, Gen Y
survey respondents said salary is their most critical consideration. In response to another question, 33 percent
cited financial security as their top career concern. To ensure that your accounting firm’s starting salaries are
above or at least on par with competitors in your region, consult resources such as the Department of Labor’s
Bureau of Labor Statistics, the annual Salary Guides from Robert Half International and trade publications.
Offer attractive benefits. Gen Yers are drawn to employers who provide first-rate healthcare and
retirement benefits. They are acutely aware that healthcare costs continue rising sharply and that the Social
Security safety net may not be available to them later in life. Be proactive and promote your company’s
benefits programs during employment interviews and on your website.
Act now. Accustomed to instant results, Millennials don’t like to wait. Therefore, instead of offering
delayed rewards (such as the possibility of a raise or bonus after six months on the job), it’s better to make an
offer they can’t refuse upfront. Moreover, Gen Yers don’t want to wait three months for healthcare coverage
or a year to be vested in your 401(k) plan. Try to enroll them on or shortly after their start date.

differences of opinion holding you back from achieving success on a project? Find out how to move past these
hurdles to reach a resolution that leaves you feeling more like teammates than opponents.

Welcome back! It’s been a great summer, but I’m ready to get back into the routine of
fall. Vacations are over. Kids are back in school. There’s something both sad and
comforting about this time of year.
One of the routines we have to look forward to is getting back in the swing of our
monthly dinner meetings. Catching up with old friends and making some new ones, as
well as gaining some professional insight and earning CPE credit can enrich us in
more ways than one could imagine.
We have a great line up of speakers for you to listen to and learn from this year. We
are also bringing Dr. Becky Stewart-Gross in for a seminar in November which you
can attend as either a half day session or receive a discount for the full day.
Your board members have spent the summer putting together the 2008-2009
programs. If you get a chance, let your board members know you appreciate their hard
work over the summer. Without them, none of this would be possible.
I look forward to seeing you soon!

Hey Students!
We’re trying something new this year by adding a student section to our monthly newsletter.
Students from all area schools are encouraged to get involved with our local chapter. This is a
perfect opportunity for you to network with potential employers as well as gaining professional
insight from other accounting professionals.
We have monthly meetings that you are encouraged to attend. The meetings are held on the
third Tuesday of every month with each meeting discussing different topics. We have a great
line up of speakers and I know you will enjoy many of them. To name a few, we have speakers
discussing about the Packer’s finances, experiences in owning a franchise restaurant, and
protecting yourself from identity theft. Every month I will send out our monthly meeting
topics and locations.
The format of the dinner meeting is:
Networking……………………………………5:15 p.m
Dinner……………………………………….. 6:15 p.m
Meeting………………………………………..7:00 p.m
Adjournment…………………………………..8:00 p.m
Student………………………………………$10

In addition to dinner meetings, you can also get involved by sharing ideas, internship/job
experiences, college experience in our monthly newsletter in our student page. This page is
designed specifically for students so please submit resourceful experiences to share with your
fellow students.
