Program Description
The primary sponsor of this premier research
conference is the American Heart Association
Scientific Council on Basic Cardiovascular
Sciences, the world’s leading organization of
cardiovascular scientists. The symposium,
titled “Frontiers in Cardiovascular Science
and Novel Therapy,” is designed to provide
state-of-the art coverage of the most exciting
scientific advances in cardiovascular medicine
and place these scientific insights in the
context of impact upon clinical medicine and
patient care.
The 2012 meeting brings together leading
scientists employing the most current
technologies for presentations ranging from
genomic technologies, molecular techniques,
stem cell science, and in vivo and proof of
concept studies in animal models and patients.
Over the past several years, there has been an
exponential growth in our understanding of the
molecular pathways that govern cardiovascular
physiology and disease, creating a translational
opportunity to move this knowledge into novel
therapeutic strategies. At the same time, there
have been major technological advances in
molecular imaging and nanomedicine that have
ushered in a new era of cardiovascular therapy.
The frontier of cardiovascular translational
science and medicine lies at the interface of
these parallel fields.
A diverse group of invited speakers from
within and outside the immediate field of
cardiovascular disease will present state-ofthe-art lectures on rapidly progressing areas of
wide interest, including genetics, non-coding
RNAs, proteomics, systems approaches
to biology, novel imaging modalities, tissue
regeneration, programmed cell death, and
subcellular compartmentalization of cell
signaling pathways, and will be presented
in the context of their relevance to the
pathophysiology of cardiac disease. The
meeting is structured to provide investigators
with diverse areas of expertise familiarity
with the novel conceptual approaches and
state-of-the-art technological applications
that are driving the most advanced biological
discovery. Accordingly, in addition to sessions
dealing with specific topics, such as ”miR
and Cardiovascular Therapeutics” and
“Myocyte Proliferation/Tissue Engineering,”
there are interdisciplinary sessions on leading
translational research applications covering
a broad array of topics. Additionally, this
year’s program features luncheon sessions
devoted to career development. This threeday conference is designed for a broad
audience of basic, translational and clinical
investigators, promoting interaction among
participants from diverse disciplines through
lectures, poster presentations, and informal
discussions. Special emphasis is placed upon
the inclusion of trainees and junior investigators
and the program features uniquely designed
mentorship sessions.

Conference Awards
Application deadline: Friday, March 23
Early Career Investigator Awards recognize
promising and outstanding investigators in
the early stages of their careers, stimulate
continued interest in basic or clinical research,
and help them participate in AHA/ASA
meetings. The Council on Basic Cardiovascular
Sciences proudly sponsors the awards listed
below and invites council members to apply. Detailed information about these awards
may be located on the conference website at
my.americanheart.org/bcvssessions.
New Investigator Travel Awards
New investigators who hold an academic
(or equivalent) rank below assistant professor
(postdocs and fellows) are encouraged to apply
for New Investigator Travel Awards. Travel
awards permit investigators to attend scientific
conferences where they can present their
research and engage in discussion with senior
investigators. Up to 20 competitive awards of
$500 each will be presented to qualified
new investigators from those who are accepted
to present abstracts.
Outstanding Early Career Investigator Awards
Up to three finalists will be selected based on
the originality, quality, and the impact of the work
presented in the abstracts, and the curriculum
vitaes. The finalists will present 10-minute oral
reviews of their abstracts during the conference.
The winner will receive $1500 and a one-year
subscription to Circulation Research; the
runners-up will receive $500 each and a oneyear subscription to Circulation Research.
Cardiovascular Outreach Awards
The awards encourage minority early career
investigators and students to participate in
the conference. Although preference will be
given to investigators and trainees with a
successful research abstract, a submission
is not required for consideration. Up to 10
competitive awards of $500 each will be
presented to qualified applicants.
Registration Information
Registration will open on Wednesday,
March 14. The conference registration site
may be accessed at my.americanheart.
