Mercy medical flight proves
answer to a mother’s prayer
By Ellis W. Stewart
LANO—“It couldn’t have
worked out more wonderfully
if I had tried any other way,”
said Jean McConnell, describing her
ailing son’s trip from Long Beach,
Calif., to Dallas.
Four years ago Mrs. McConnell
decided her grown son Victor
Hawkins, whose health had deteriorated over the years, needed to live
near her in Texas so she and other

family members and friends could
visit and check on him frequently.
She began looking and praying for
a way to move Victor, now 53, back
to Dallas, where he is originally from.
Mr. Hawkins grew up in the Dallas
area. He has had a lifelong problem
with poor vision, preventing him
from driving a car, and other healthrelated problems.

Medical personnel team up to move disabled son back to Texas
Continued from page 1
North Texas State in Denton in the
1970s, the federal government recruited him to work for the Internal
Revenue Service in the Los Angeles
area, with assistance from a government program to hire blind and other
disabled people.
In the late 1980s Mr. Hawkins was
diagnosed with diabetes.
In 2000 he moved south to Long
Beach to share an apartment with a
friend for a while.
During his mother’s yearly visit in
2000, she and Mr. Hawkins’ sister
Theresa McConnell, who lives in
Monterey, Calif., moved him into an
“assisted-living” residence.
Mr. Hawkins also has a sister who
lives in the Dallas area, Audrey Andrews. “Her daughter, Ashley, is Victor’s pride and joy,” said Mrs. McConnell.
In 2003 Mr. Hawkins’ diabetic
condition had worsened, and surgeons amputated his left leg below
the knee.
In 2003 Mr. Hawkins also suffered
heart and kidney problems.
Also in 2003 he moved from the
assisted-living facility into a nursing
home in Long Beach.
her church and other friends prayed
for Victor and for a way to move him
back to Dallas.
“A friend asked if I would call
Angel Flight and see if they might be
able to help,” she said.
Angel Flight is a charity that provides air transportation for medical
patients. Angel Flight personnel told
her that for various reasons Mr.
Hawkins did not qualify for their
help, but they suggested she call
Mercy Med-Flight, which she did.
Mercy Med-Flight, another nonprofit, based in Fort Worth, evaluated
Mr. Hawkins’ situation as “desperate”
and therefore qualifying for their assistance.
Mercy Med-Flight put Mr. Hawkins’ name on a waiting list. Mrs.
McConnell was under the impression
that it might be six months before the
organization could fly him from
California to Texas. As it turned out, it
took only three months.
winged their way back to Texas.
A ground ambulance from Care
First EMS of Cedar Hill waiting at
Addison Airport picked him up and
took him to The Village at Richardson, a nursing home,
thanks to Care First’s
operations manager,
Keith Powell, said
Mrs. McConnell.
“This was all done
as a charitable service,” she said. “I could
never begin to afford
all this. It would have
cost thousands of dollars. I don’t know how
to thank God enough
for these wonderful,
serving people. I pray

Col. McAlear said he is “hopeful
that the funding will continue to come
in so that we can eventually get to all
of those in need.
“Some patients and their families
have been waiting for over six
months. Please pray for the resources
that will allow us to do that.”
Mrs. McConnell said she wants to
share her and her son’s story in
hopes of inspiring others to look to
God for help, and maybe God will
bless others through Mercy MedFlight as well.
Even though the trip from California was difficult at times for Mr.
Hawkins, he says it was “handled
with loving care” and thinks Mercy
Med-Flight was “God-sent.”
Mrs. McConnell said the nursing
staff at The Village in Richardson
wants to fit him for a prosthetic leg
and try to get him up and walking
again as his health permits.
“We appreciate prayers” for that
effort, she said.

What a deal on top of the hill! Within walking distance to Lake Hawkins, this house
is going for only $109,900 with 1.25 acres
of pasture for your horses. Great Bermuda
grass flat land on the hill. 3rd and 4th bedroom has been converted into a ladies’
dressing room with a wall sized-closet and
built-in wooded shelves and computer
area. The kitchen is just waiting for you to
cook your first Thanksgiving meal in it with
a huge island that is topped with beautiful
marble tiles, extra oak cabinets underneath with a built-in wine or fruit cooler.
The kitchen was remodeled with new oak
cabinets, dishwasher, Kohler sink with
marble counter-top and back slash. The
kitchen window faces out to a hill top view
and your own private in-ground swimming
pool, 14 by 28 with two jets on the first
steps. French doors open onto a 700 sq.
ft. multi-level deck that has a 6-person
Jacuzzi dropped in. The exterior of the
house is siding that has just been painted
a Texas sage green with the trim/trellis
creamy vanilla, all chosen by a designer
from Atlanta to compliment a lake house
community. Which brings me back to the
interior faux painting, wallpaper and the
vaulted ceiling in the den that has a
ceramic tiled shelf for plants or speakers.
The house gives you a lot for the money.

Did someone say give me a kiss? I was
kissed by a Hershey Bar ’cause I am the prettiest chocolate dog you have ever laid eyes
on. When they first found me they thought I
was a chocolate lab, but I am not, I’m a
chocolate-brown German short-hair pointer
mix, and my name is Zoe. I am sooo content
to hang out with you as a couch potato, or
take a short walk in the afternoon. I am very
affectionate so hugs and kisses are a must if
you want me to live with you. Children, cats,
Blue Bell, no problem! I am completely house
broken and crate trained and love to ride in
the car. I am protective, but not aggressive. I
would let you know if a stranger was outside
and once you welcomed a guest I would settle down and let them pet me. See a photo of

Take a welcome break with this tasty coffee cake
Hi, I’m Ben, a laid-back black and tan coonhound puppy, long ears and all. I have gotten so tall and just get better looking every
day. I’m a little on the mellow side and think
that being a nice boy is very important. That
is why I don’t jump up on people. I like children and enjoy following them around. My
idea of a perfect life would be to live with a
family. I would get to ride in the car to take
the kids to school. I could watch television
or lie down by your feet when you are reading a book. At Christmas time, you could
put a red Santa hat on my head and include
me in the family picture. If you have another dog, I would make a great friend for him,
too. At night I could sleep with your son in
his bed and go fishing on Saturday morning. Will you be my family? See our Ben at
www.petfinder.com. Search for dogs in the
75765 zip code area and look for Misplaced
Pets at Holly Lake Ranch. Click on Ben or

Hi, will you sing this with me? To the tune
of I’m a Little Tea Pot: “Hi, my name is
Peanut I’m short not stout. Come pet my
muzzle, come play about. I’m a shorthaired doggie come and see, if you will fall
in love with me.” Wow, that was great! I’m
only 25 lbs. of love, and I’m the perfect dog
for someone who wants to spoil me rotten!
I love children and other dogs. Did I tell you
I am small enough to look really cute in a
doggie sweater? Oh, I really need your
love, we could snuggle up and be so close!

puppies we have had in a long time. We

have a puppy?” They are black and tan with
a lot of energy! Call Carolyn at Misplaced

TLANTA, Ga. (NAPS)—Few
things smell better than an
old-fashioned
cinnamonapple coffee cake just out of the oven,
especially one that is moist and
mouthwatering, with a rich, caramel
pecan-crumb topping. It can warm
your heart and soothe your soul all at
the same time and is a great treat for
breakfast, brunch or even an afternoon snack.
This recipe is ready to bake in
minutes because it starts with a delicious crumb-cake mix. All you do is
stir in an egg, some sour cream, a
chopped baking apple (such as a
Granny Smith) and pecans and you
are ready to pop it in the oven.
It even smells and tastes wonderful
the next day—if it lasts that long.
Your favorite homemade coffee
cake can be at the tip of your fingers.
Your family will love it.

I have been waiting for you to come and
see me for months now and I am just getting prettier by the day. Come to the kennels and see Lilah! I will drape my front
paws over your knees and give you a
kiss. I weigh only 25 lbs. and am full
grown. My coat is velvety soft and jet
black with a brush of white across my
chest. I look like miniature Labrador
retriever. I am so petite and already crate
trained; I never mess up my kennel. I am
very smart, too, and tilt my head to listen
to what you say. I love the water and am
happy to swim in the baby pool here, or
stand on top of it like I am Queen of the
Kennels. Children love me and why not? I
am wonderful! Oh! It’s good to be Queen!

My name is Sally and I am a Shepherd mix
and weigh only 35 lbs. I would weigh more if
they let me eat chips and Blue Bell, but they
don’t! Can I come live with you? If we all get
in our jammies, I could lie right next to you
and we could share a snack—say some ice
cream or chicken nuggets—and we could
watch Beethoven over and over again. I have
a faithful way about me and I would like to
love you for a very long time if you would let
me. See a photo of Sally at www.petfinder.com. Search for dogs in the 75765 zip

My name is Katie and I am a miniature
chow and husky mix. I only weigh about
28 lbs. and am extra cute. They think I
look like a stuffed animal, so don’t drop
me off at toy store or they will restock
me! My darling pointed ears and nose
give me an unusually comical look. I am
jet black and a little shy, but I warm right
up to you and love to be held. I want to

My name is Lady Bug and I’m an
Australian Shepherd. They tell me that I
am gorgeous, but I am a little on the shy
side and it’s hard for me to believe that
people can really be so kind, but they are.
My amber eyes are looking for someone
to trust and I am finding it easier to let
people love on me. I like older children a
lot and enjoy the company of nice dogs. I
have a very playful side and wouldn’t
mind if you came over for a visit just to
check me out. You could give me a treat.
Can you come over? I would be a great
dog for a calm family who wants a love
bug named Lady Bug. See a photo of

Trucker’s dream dog! If you are a truck driver and want a traveling fool, I am your dog,
because I just love to ride, ride, ride! I obey
well, too! My name is Sandie and I was
born to run and enjoy life. I think I am a labridgeback mix. I quickly learned that Misplaced Pets is a safe place and that I am
worthy of being loved just because God
made me. The workers here love to kiss
me and tell me that I am a special girl. I
love the water on a hot day, so if you have
a pond to play in that would be great, but
it’s not a deal breaker because a baby pool
would do just fine! When will you make me
your own? See a photo of Sandie at www.

Vrooooom! My name is Harley and I am
about 50 lbs. of fully grown fun with big feet
to match my really big heart. People here
think that I’m so cool, and I’m expecting a
leather jacket for Christmas. Will you buy me
one and take me around town as you special dog? I’m a beautiful brown brindle mutt
of some kind with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. And whoa, getta load of my ears that
float far above my head, then flop, as if to
rest in midair! God must have spent a long
Poodle, male puppy. Handsome guy! He is
sweet, smart and housebroken. Also papertrained. Medium-size toy with full tail, cream
color, 8 months old. Purebred. Loves to be
held and brushed. Beautiful face and carriage. $200 cash. 903-477-2345.
Some people can’t have a dog, but want to
be near them. We can help you! Misplaced
Pets at Holly Lake Ranch is looking for volunteer kennel keepers, dog walkers, a dog
trainer, record keepers, fund-raisers and
foster parents. Sometimes we just need
someone who will pick up food and take it
from one location to another. We also
accept financial contributions. Our dedicated volunteers enjoy making a difference in
the local community. Come, give a little, get
a lot. Call Deborah at 903-769-9542.

Wanted: first-rate family who knows a great
dog when they see one. My new family must
be willing to love me and care for me for the
rest of my life in exchange for unlimited kisses and complete devotion. Must appreciate
the dog-gone good looks of me, Naomi, a 2year-old, 35 lb. Australian Shepherd with the
desire to follow you around where ever you
go. Car rides are a must, but I don’t have to
ride shot gun. Children are perfect, cats are
okay, air conditioning required and ice
cream a must at least once a week. I don’t
like to potty in the house, and I do like to
stay in a crate when you are at PetSmart
buying me new toys. So call me now! See a

Pfc. Myers gets the feeling he’s not in Kansas anymore
Marvin Myers is a former Marine
and Korean War veteran. While
serving with the 1st Marine Division
in Korea in 1951, he wrote more
than 200 pages of letters to his parents.
The letters and pictures in this
series were kept in a cardboard box
(time capsule) until May 2005, when
opened and viewed for the first time
in decades. This series is based on
these letters plus Mr. Myers’ personal recollections.
Mr. Myers is a member of the East
Texas chapter of the Korean War
Veterans’ Association (KWVA),
which welcomes Korea veterans
who served from 1950 to the present
and associate members who may be
interested in supporting the KWVA.

OLLY LAKE RANCH—An
old Chinese proverb puts it
this way: “It’s better to be a
dog in a peaceful time than to be a
man in a chaotic period.”
Before April 1951 was over, I
would be grateful to be a dog
because war and chaos are synonymous.
April would prove to be a seminal
month in the Korean War. The
largest battle of the war was about to
unfold, with the Chinese Communist Forces (CCF) committing their
greatest number of troops to date.
The CCF called it its “Fifth-Phase”
offensive.
The pitting of two equal forces
against each other across an imaginary battle line was a throwback to
World War II never to be witnessed
again. The two armies totaled approximately one million soldiers.
The weather on any given day in
late March 1951 could be freezing
cold or pouring rain. (We were, after
all, perched on the cusp of the Asian
monsoon season.)
In either case, the weather and the
topography favored mules and foot
soldiers over a modern mechanized
army.
Heavy American-made trucks
that sunk in mud up to their axles at
the end of the day might be frozen
solid, as if in concrete, by the next
morning.
Heavy equipment of all types,
including artillery, was often immobile, while the enemy, with lightweight mortars on wheels, could reposition quickly many times a day.
Even commanding general Mathew Bunker Ridgway sounded frus-
H
trated that Mother Nature seemed to
favor the enemy when he observed
that “the evil genius of the Eastern
mind uses every local form of transportation: oxen, camels, ponies and
two-wheeled carts.”
Be that as it may, since the general had taken over command in
January 1951 the UN forces
were on the move week after
week, operation after operation, battle after battle, pushing the communist armies
back toward the 38th parallel.
Events I would witness this
week and in the months to follow would stick with me for a
lifetime.
Here are excerpts of daily

“There was an English plane from
the Hellenic Royal Air Force there, a
really classy transport.
“We ate and left there about 12:30
on a small [Army] truck for the forward command post, in the field,
about 40 miles north of Wonju.
“Wonju is torn all to hell. All
that’s standing is twisted steel and
crumbled concrete. Everything else
was leveled.
“We came through Hoensong
[Hoenchong], which was also in
shambles.
“On the way up I saw five tanks
knocked off the side of the road.
“About every 1,000 yards there
was a truck turned upside down,
sometimes a jeep and about five silver [Chinese] buses.
“They are building a tremendous
airfield north of Wonju.
“The terrain is hilly; the ride on
the truck was rough and slow.
“Talking about transportation,
there were dump trucks, big trucks,
6-bys [six-wheeled bobtail trucks],
and I even saw a monstrous flat
trailer, from the back, that was eight
wheels wide.
“We have to wear our helmets and
weapons [even] to chow, which,
A LONG 200 MILES—Map, below: The trip to the front
from Masan to Chinhae to P’ohang to Wonju to Hoenchong
to the forward command post near the 38th parallel
seemed interminably long. In reality it was less than the
distance from Dallas to Houston, or about 200 miles,
stretched over a two-day period under wartime conditions.
Photo 1: The K-38 Wonju Airdrome was a mud hole. Wonju
had been secured only a month or two earlier. This picture,
taken out of the troop transport window, looks like an image
of small car-tire tracks. Not! These were tracks of huge aircraft tires showing where they had tried to get traction in
the sloppy muck. A small creek or ditch ran the full length
of the runway. Landings in this mud pie were dicey, to say
the least. Photo 2: Here I am with a buddy (on my right)

whose name I do not recall. Notice his side arm. It looks to
be a .38-caliber. This was not standard issue for enlisted
men, but no one ever questioned us about unauthorized
auxiliary weapons. By looking at the back side of our tent
you get some idea how huge these rascals were and what
a hassle to set up and break down. Whew. Photo 3: It’s not
impressive, but it is what it is: the division adjutant’s forward
command post. This was the office and sleeping quarters
for eight of us who made up the adjutant’s staff. The division adjutant, Lt. Col. Foster “Frosty” LaHue, had his own
private tent. The commanding general, 1st Marine Division,
Oliver P. Smith, had a private trailer. [Commentary and photos courtesy M.L. “Jimmy” Myers; map adapted from a map

Ask and you know what
Well, well, well, young Pfc. Myers (that’s me in 1951) wanted a
change of scenery, and now it looks
like he’s getting it—in spades.
There would be many moves over
the next six months, sometimes forward and sometimes backwards.
Whatever was in store, the life of
a U.S. marine in wartime would not
be dull or boring.
(Next week: On the road again.)
