Thank them for their service:
The war generation is passing
Jim Mueller, a Vietnam veteran
from Missouri, is the commander-inchief of the 2.4 million-member Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. and
its auxiliaries.
By Jim Mueller
’FALLON, Mo.
( N A P S ) —
Someone I knew
died the other day. I
didn’t get a chance to say
good-bye, but I had
thanked him for the life
he led as a member of
America’s Greatest Generation.
He came from an ordinary family that taught
traditional values like
right from wrong and re- Jim Mueller
spect for others. He learned
that the measure of a man was in
deeds, not words, and that hard work
wasn’t something to fear.
He also learned to take care of his
neighbors, so when the world needed
our help during World War II he and
16 million other Americans answered
that call to military duty.
O
World War II was a defining moment for America. We saw the end of
the Great Depression and the emergence of the United States as a world
leader, but we also witnessed the
impact of the war on the home front
and the tremendous
resiliency of the American public to overcome
all challenges.
After the war, the
only thing this generation asked for was to be
normal again—to wear
the current styles, watch
the latest movies and
settle down and raise
their families.
Fewer than 3.5 million World War II veterans remain, a number
that is expected to halve
within the next five years.
I was able to thank my friend for
his service to our country before he
passed; now I urge all Americans to
do likewise. They are living national
treasures, and they and their generation deserve our eternal gratitude and
remembrance.

Feb. 1, 2006 / Page 5
It’s February, but please pass the black-eyed peas anyway
ORSICANA (NAPS)—Texans are familiar with the tradition that eating black-eyed
peas on the first day of the new year
brings good luck.
But black-eyed peas are so delicious and nutritious, why wait a
whole year for the next Jan. 1?
One reason many of today’s busy
cooks wait is because dried peas and
beans typically require several hours
of preparation. Ready-to-use blackeyed peas can be enjoyed right away
without much fuss any time of the
year in soups, salads, stews, casseroles and dips. This quick, convenient option can be found in the supermarket produce department.
On the nutrition front, one-quarter cup of black-eyed peas provides
10 grams of dietary fiber, which is
40 percent of the daily value. They
also offer 15 percent of the daily
value of iron.
Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables every day is an essential part
of a healthy lifestyle. Include fruits
and vegetables from the five color
groups
each

The Compassionate
Friends
The mission of The Compassionate Friends of Tyler is to assist families
toward the positive resolution of grief following the death of a child of
any age and to provide information to help others be supportive.
The Compassionate Friends is a national nonprofit, self-help support
organization that offers friendship, understanding and hope to bereaved
parents, grandparents and siblings. There is no religious affiliation, and
there are no membership dues or fees.
The secret of TCF’s success is simple: As seasoned grievers reach out to
the newly bereaved, energy that has been directed inward begins to
flow outward, and both are helped to heal. The vision of The
Compassionate Friends is that everyone who needs us will find us and
everyone who finds us will be helped.
Our monthly group meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each
month at the Clinical Associates of East Texas building at 2010 Sybil
Lane (just off Paluxy
Drive) in Tyler.

Katie loves everyone! An Australian
kelpie mix with dark chocolate eyes is
worth the drive, wouldn’t you say? You’ll
love her bossy tail. It arches over her back

My name is Lady Bug. I am still here
and waiting for my forever home. I am
gorgeous! I am a not-so-shy Australian
Shepherd who would be a faithful companion to anyone who would take some
time to love me. There are not enough
words to speak my heart. I have been
here for a long time, but I am getting
more social every day. Once, when all
the bad thunderstorms came, Miss
Carolyn and Mr. Bob took me home to
their house. I stayed outside on the big
covered porch and was safe and dry. I
was surprised at how nice people could
be and everyone got to see that with a
little work and kind attention, I would be
able to even come inside. I have never
been a digger and would enjoy being
outside too in a fenced-in yard. I am so
sweet and just love to eat fat-free
cream cheese. It’s what they use to
train me to come to them. Is there any
family on your list looking for a love bug
like me? See a photo of Lady Bug at

Who’s a Big Boy? Who’s a Big Boy?
Blue, that’s who! Blue because he has
1 blue eye and 1 brown eye. He is a
giant puppy almost a year old and sort
of shy. Blue is mostly white with brown
markings. It is hard to tell what breed
he is. Blue might have a little St.
Bernard in him or some sort of hound.
He loves to play and likes all of the
dogs at the kennels, so if you know of
any families looking for an additional
dog, Blue would be the guy who loves
to fit in. Sometimes people are looking
for friends for their dogs so they won’t
be lonesome. You can tell them about
Blue. He is a big dog who needs a big-

Representatives meet in Kaesong July 10 to negotiate war’s end
Marvin Myers is a former Marine
and Korean War veteran. While serving with the 1st Marine Division in
Korea in 1951, he wrote more than
200 pages of letters to his parents.
The letters and pictures in this
series were kept in a cardboard box
(time capsule) until May 2005, when
opened and viewed for the first time in
decades. This series is based on these
letters plus Mr. Myers’ personal recollections.
Mr. Myers is a member of the East
Texas chapter of the Korean War
Veterans’ Association (KWVA), which
welcomes Korea veterans who served
from 1950 to the present and associate members who may be interested
in supporting the KWVA.

By M.L. Myers
OLLY LAKE RANCH—The
Korean War officially began
27 June 1950 when North
Korea invaded South Korea. I was 19
years old.
On 15 July 1950 I received notice
that my Marine Reserve unit had been
activated. My orders were to report to
Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, Calif.,
within 10 days, as I recall.
Now in this week of July 30, 1951,
I had been on active duty for one year,
but it seemed much, much longer.
Peace talks had commenced.
Officially, fighting had ceased.
Movement of troops ended on a
line just north of the 38th parallel.
(See the map on this page.)
I had been reassigned to Masan,
Korea, and hoped my tour of duty
would soon end and I would return to
the States and be discharged, but that
was still somewhat in doubt.
The following letter to my dad
explains the current situation.
H
Extenuating circumstances
“30 July 1951
“Masan, Korea
“No. 34
“Dad—
“This is as much as I can [learn] on
the length of time I will be held in this
outfit.
“It’s true [President] Truman extended all enlistments another year,
but that only applied to those who
have not already been extended or to
the Reserves who signed up for an
indefinite length of time. [Neither situation applied to me.]
“I should get out this November.
[That’s a good guess, Cpl. Jimmy.]
“If they think up something else, or
if the situation gets worse, I shouldn’t
be held more than 21 months, which
would be about May sometime (July
’50 to May ’51).
“There is nothing definite, but, if
the peace conferences develop,
there’s a very good chance the division may pull out.
“Here in Masan, we have been
making preparations to move. We
have painted the desks and put the
weight and size on each.
“We are to have a drill sometime
this week to see how fast we pack up
all our office equipment and get it out
in front of the buildings.
“So that looks as if we might move
anyway about the middle of September. Of course, then they just finished a new mess hall for us today.
It’s really nice.
“When the [Marine Corps] general
[Jerry Thomas] came down here last
week, he had an Army General with
him, so it might be that we will move
out to Japan, Guam or even the States,
and the Army will move in here.
“I’m not going to Pusan [to meet
the 11th replacement draft] after all.
I’m pleased about that. It’s a large
one. [I had written the number of
troops in the draft, but on second
thought had then crossed it out
because all troop movements were
classified ‘Confidential & Secret.’]
“I’m planning on seeing Watch the
Birdie with Red Skelton in a while.
“Jim.”
Jimmy the crew chief
We did make a couple of dry runs
to see how fast we could head ’em up
and move ’em out. Each marine had
plenty of help from a cadre of young
Korean houseboys always happy to
have something to keep them gainfully employed. (See my crew in the
photo on this page.)
My recent promotion to corporal
gave me a modicum of authority to
organize work details to see that
everything moved smoothly. What
power!
Of course, I studied my Korean
Language Guide book and, most
important, listened to records to get
the pronunciation correct. (See the
photos.) That’s the same day I wrote
the following letter to my mom:
Organized chaos
“30th July 1951
“Masan, Korea
“Dear Mother:
“I want you to send my old cornet.
The work down here isn’t so much
that I can’t have time in the evenings
to practice, and we have Saturday
afternoons and all day Sunday off.
I’ve already found a place to play.
“About 25 yards from the office
there is an old Japanese pond with
shrubbery around it and a huge rock
in the center. It’s kind of like a little
theater and I think it will work fine.
“Jimmy.”
Stretching out
My letters started to stretch out to
about one per week at this time, sim-

ply because there was not a lot of
activity on which to report.
Since I was no longer in any danger, it did not seem necessary to
“report in” as often as I had promised
my mom in the beginning.
Most of us thought at the time that
a peace settlement would surely be
just a matter of a few weeks away—
or months, at the most. But such was
not to be.
Just a week later I wrote another
letter to my dad:
Matter of degrees
“Letter No. 35
“Monday, Aug. 7, 1951
“Masan, Korea.
“Dear Dad,
“The time has really passed quickly lately. It’s August already. Soon
summer will be gone.
“I don’t believe they can extend
me more than once. I’ll know for sure
in about three more months.
“We had a ream of those safe-conduct passes up north, but I don’t know
what happened to them all. I got the
[cigarette] lighter for you in town yesterday. It cost 8,000 won [or] about
$1.30. The ratio is 6,000 to the dollar.
“I hate to get anything in town
because they want twice as much as
it’s worth.
“They do pretty nice work with
mother-of-pearl inlaid in wood.
“I’m sending Bobby a cigarette
case for his birthday.
FOR BETTER AND FOR WORDS—Top: This detailed map shows both the North
Korean capital, P’yongyang, and the South Korean capital, Seoul, as well as two cities,
Kaesong and Panmunjom, where, respectively, the first meeting was held and the final
armistice was finally signed July 27, 1953. Although the armistice ended the fighting, it
did not end the war. Above left: This was my personal work crew, a work party of four:
ready, willing and able to do whatever they were asked in broken Korean or by hand
signals. How could I go wrong with the War Department’s Guide to the Spoken
Language: Korean and phonograph records to get the pronunciation down pat? Above:
These are pages from our language guide and phrase book. It’s not really hard once
you get the hang of it. Example: “Hello” (ut-duss-SIM-nik-gah). “Good morning” (AHNn’yung hah—SIM-nik-gah). “Thank you” (kaw-mahp-SOOM-nee-dah). “Please”
(chawn), as in chawmed, I’m sure. These are words used every day. Sometimes we
would get mixed up and drop in a little Japanese as in ohio-gazie-mus-ta (good morning), sayanara (good-bye) or arigoto (thank you). It didn’t matter because most adult
Koreans were fluent in Japanese because Japan had occupied the Korean peninsula
for decades. [Graphics and commentary courtesy M.L. Myers]
“They make little tables, trays and
jewelry boxes, but they cost anywhere from $2.50 to $14.
“A camp memo came out yesterday saying swimming parties were
being organized. They take us somewhere [Masan Bay] in ducks
[amtracs, or amphibious tractors].
“We can’t swim down here in the
bay so they have cleared someplace
out for us. I’m going to go today.
“The weather for the last few days
has been miserable. I’m glad we have
one of the better offices to work in; the
thermometer has hit 120 this afternoon. Perspiration is rolling off me
now and I don’t sweat much, as a rule.
“Jimmy.”
Back and forth to the future
Fast-forward half a century: Here
is a comment from the U.S. Department of Defense published by its
Korean War Commemorative Committee on the 50th anniversary of the
Korean War, observed from 2000 to
2003. This is from a pamphlet titled
The Korean War: Years of Stalemate:
“The first twelve months of the
Korean War (June 1950-1951) had
been characterized by dramatic changes in the battlefront as the opposing
armies swept up and down the length
of the Korean peninsula. The war of
movement virtually ended on 10 July
1951, when representatives from the
warring parties met in a restaurant in
Kaesong to negotiate an end to the
war. Although the two principal parties to the conflict . . . were more than
willing to fight to the death, their chief
patrons . . . were not. It was no longer
in their respective national interests to
try and win a total victory in Korea.
The commencement of negotiations
raised hopes that the war would soon
be over, but such was not to be.
“While negotiators engaged in verbal combat around the conference
table, the soldiers in the field continued to fight and die—for two more
long and tortuous years.”

Holly Lake author writes ‘novels of adventure’
H
OLLY LAKE RANCH—A
61-year-old resident of Holly
Lake Ranch is the author of
two published novels.
Steve Kehoe’s first “novel of adventure” is The Colonel’s Namesake,
written under
Mr. Kehoe’s pen
name, Stephen
Crowe.
The second is
Flying Above the
Clouds.
Of his first
book Mr. Kehoe
notes that “every generation
produces at least Steve Kehoe
one good novel
of war, love and adventure written
from the perspective of persons who
have lived in those times.”
The Colonel’s Namesake tells the
tale of a young man who joins the
Army during the Vietnam War and
serves as a Green Beret.
After marrying a lovely Vietnamese Army nurse who is killed
seven years later by North Vietnamese agents, he returns to his
hometown in Missouri to sort out his
life and try to find his identity in life.
Flying Above the Clouds tells the
story of a man’s blind faith in and
total reliance on the promised fruits of
high technology, along with the loss
of innocence in the belief that such
technology never comes without a
price to be paid.
The story picks up where The
Colonel’s Namesake leaves off with
the children of Josh Madison, the
Green Beret Mr. Kehoe wrote about
in his first book.
The two books are “much more
than just a good story,” says Mr.
Kehoe. They have “universal applica-
tion to any and all of us who have suffered great tragedy or loss in our lives
and who have the determination to
reinvent ourselves to rise above bad
circumstances.”
Mr. Kehoe is semiretired from a
40-year career in automotive sales
management and banking.
He has also worked as a sales
and product trainer and has written several training manuals for
companies over the past 30 years.
“But this was my first experience with writing a novel of fiction,” he says. “I carried the plot
outline around in my head since
college days, and finally, in the
summer of 2002, decided to put
pen to paper—or, rather, fingers
to the keyboard, as it were.”
Mr. Kehoe is also helping
