Bereits zum 10. Mal wird in diesem
Jahr das Baden Masters durchgeführt.
Wir sind stolz auch in diesem Jahr
ein ausserordentliches Teilnehmerfeld präsentieren zu können. Neben
den ersten sechs Mannschaften der Schweizer Curlingmeisterschaft 2010, nehmen Teams aus Norwegen, Schottland, Russland, Tschechien, Schweden, die Titelverteidiger aus Kanada
sowie erstmals Teams aus Finnland und Holland in Baden teil.
Die traditionelle Saisoneröffnung der Curling Champions Tour,
wird Ihnen, liebe Zuschauer, spannenden und grossartigen Curlingsport sowie den Teilnehmern interessante Vergleiche gleich
zu Beginn der Saison bieten.
Zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte des Baden Masters können in
diesem Jahr die Spiele eines Rinks während der gesamten drei
Turniertage auf dem Internet verfolgt werden. Loggen sie sich ein

Ein Event in diesem Rahmen lässt sich nur dank ausserordentlichen Engagements realisieren. Ein besonderer Dank gebührt

Masters 2010. For the 10th time already the Baden Masters
takes place. We are proud to present another extraordinary
field of participants. Besides the first six teams of the Swiss
Curling Championship 2010, teams form Norway, Scotland, Russia, the Czech Republic, Sweden, the defending
Baden Masters Champion from Canada and for the first
time teams from Finland and the Netherlands take part.
The traditional season’s opening of the Curling Champions
Tours will be providing you, dear spectators, with thrilling
and superb curling as well as allow the participants interesting comparisons at the beginning of the season.
For the first time in the history of the Baden Masters, the games
of all three tournament days can be followed on the internet.

It takes extraordinary efforts to realise an event of these
dimensions. Special thanks go to our sponsors who support the event financially. The volunteers from the Curling
Club Baden Regio also play a big part in looking after the

Seit 10 Jahren gehört das Baden
Masters als fester Bestandteil zur
Turnierplanung des CC Baden Regio.
Als neu gewählter Präsident freut es mich ganz besonders, Sie
zu diesem Anlass in unserer Curlinghalle begrüssen zu dürfen.
Das Organisationskomitee war in all den Jahren bestrebt, den
Spielern und Teams ein erlebnisreiches Turnierprogramm und
bestmögliche Bedingungen zu präsentieren. Auch dieses Jahr
wollen wir, dass das Turnier für alle Beteiligten wieder ein besonderer Anlass wird und danach noch lange in positiver Erinnerung bleibt.
Hochkarätige Mannschaften aus der Schweiz und aus den verschiedensten Ländern haben sich für dieses Turnier angemeldet und werden uns interessante Spiele sowie Curlingsport vom
Feinsten zeigen.
Zum Schluss bleibt mir nur noch zu danken: ich danke all
jenen, die sich tatkräftig für das gute Gelingen des Baden Masters einsetzen. Ohne die finanzielle Unterstützung unserer

For 10 years, the Baden Masters has been an asset in the
tournament plan of the CC Baden Regio. As the newly
appointed president of the club I am extraordinarily
pleased to welcome you to our curling centre for this event.
The organisational committee’s goal throughout the years
has always been to provide an exciting programm with
optimal conditions. This year too we want the tournament
to be a special event that stays in the memory of everyone
involved.
Top-class teams from Switzerland and from many different countries have enrolled for the Baden Masters and
will be providing us with interesting games and the best of
curling.
It remains for me to thank: I thank all those who work for
the success of the Baden Masters. Without the financial

Pascal Hess (SUI)
2009 nahm das Team
Hess an der Winteruniversiade in Harbin, China teil. Sie
errangen am weltweit zweitgrössten
Wintersport-Event den 5. Schlussrang. Die guten
Spiele gegen die Spitzenteams aus Schweden,
China und Norwegen, wobei die Halbfinals im
Tie-Break verpasst wurden, und das Erlebnis
Universiade an sich, werden aber in guter Erinnerung bleiben. In der Schweizer Meisterschaft
2009 / 2010 reichte es trotz dreier Siege gegen
die besten vier Teams nur für Platz fünf. Dieser
erlaubt dem Team, in der SLA zu verbleiben.
Brad Gushue (CAN)
Brad Gushue is
a product of the
St. John’s Curling
Club in Newfoundland and Labrador.
He skipped the
Canadian men’s curling team at the Torino 2006
Olympic Winter Games. With teammates Russ
Howard, Mark Nichols, Jamie Korab and Mike
Adam, Gushue became the first Newfoundlander
ever to win Olympic gold. In addition to being
an Olympic gold medalist, he is a two-time world
junior champion, ten-time provincial champion
and a national junior gold, silver and bronze
medalist. Brad and his team were awarded the
2006 Canadian team of the year and Brad has
been awarded Newfoundland Male Athlete of
the Year on two occasions (2005, 2006). In 2006,
Brad Gushue published a book about his career
(Golden Gushue, ISBN: 1551095858). In 2007,
Gushue replaced Mike Adam with Chris Schille
as second. A month following their runner-up
finish at the 2007 Tim Hortons Brier in Hamilton,
Gushue announced that Jamie Korab, longtime
teammate, was also cut from the team. In 2008,
David Noftall assumed the lead position but this
did not prove to be a winning combination. In
April 2008, Gushue replaced his front-end for the
sixth straight year: Jamie Korab rejoined the team
as lead and Ryan Fry joined the team at second.
In April 2010, Randy Ferbey joined Brad Gushue’s
team holding the broom but throwing third rocks.
Brad will continue to throw last rocks. Previous
third, Mark Nichols will be bumped to the second
position and Ryan Fry will play lead. Jamie Korab
has decided to take a year or two off.
Thomas Løvold (NOR)
At the Junior level,
Løvold competed as
skip and won gold
medals at the 2002
and 2003 World Junior
Curling Championships «B» tournaments. He has gained worldwide
attention for having played as the alternate for
Team Thomas Ulsrud at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and played third for Team Torger
Nergård at the 2010 World Curling Championships
in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, winning the silver
medal at both tournaments. Thomas Løvold also
skips his own team on World Curling Tour events.
His most successful tournament was the 2009
Lucerne Curling Trophy where his team made it
to the semi finals but lost to Team Ralph Stöckli
of Switzerland.

Thomas Lips (SUI)
1970 geboren, wohnt
Thomas Lips heute in
Urdorf und ist verheiratet.
Seine erste internationale Medaille (Bronze) gewann er 1991 an der Europameisterschaft. 2003 reichte es im gleichen Turnier mit
Skip Bernhard Werthemann Rang 4. An der WM
2004 wurde er mit dem gleichen Skip Sechster.
2006 errang er an der EM zusammen mit Andreas
Schwaller die Goldmedaille.
Auch als Coach ist Thomas Lips sehr erfolgreich.
2000 erreichten die Juniorinnen an der Junioren-
WM den vierten Rang. In den vergangenen zwei
Jahren coachte er das Team Stöckli und gewann
mit ihm Silber bei der WM 2009 und Bronze an
den Olympischen Winterspielen 2010.
David Murdoch (SCO)
David Murdoch is a
two-time World Junior
Curling Champion.
Then in 2005, Murdoch went to his first
ever World Championships. His Scotland rink won the silver medal
after losing to Canada’s Randy Ferbey in the
final. The team’s fine run of form ensured all
four members a place in the Great Britain men’s
squad for the 2006 Winter Olympics, with Murdoch as skip. At the Olympics, Murdoch and
his team lost in the bronze medal match to Pete
Fenson of the United States. Two months later,
Murdoch would avenge his defeat by winning
the gold medal at the 2006 World Men’s Curling Championship. Murdoch defeated Canada
(skipped by Jean-Michel Ménard) in the final. In
December 2006, he won the silver medal in the
European Championships in Basel, Switzerland,
and followed that up in Fuessen, Germany with
gold in 2007. Murdoch and his team represented Scotland again at the 2008 World Men’s Curling Championship, where he lost to Canada in
the final, a title which he took back the next
year after beating Kevin Martin. On January
17, 2010, Murdoch’s rink became the first nonCanadian team to win the TSN Skins Game. At
the 2010 Olympics he finished 5th. Two months
later he took bronze in the World Championships in Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Claudio Pescia (SUI)
Claudio Pescia (geboren: 17. November
1963 in Zürich, wohnhaft in Wettswil) spielt
seit 1977 Curling. Bei
den Europameisterschaften von 1994 bis 1998 und bei der Weltmeisterschaft 1996 spielte Pescia für Italien,
konnte aber keine Medaille gewinnen.
Seither spielt er für die Schweiz, meist auf Position 3. Bei den Europameisterschaften 2002
und 2005 sowie den Weltmeisterschaften 2006
und 2008 blieb Pescia ebenfalls ohne Medaille.
Die Weltmeisterschaft 2003 in Winnipeg war
mit dem Gewinn der Silbermedaille sein bisher
grösster Erfolg. 2006 nahm Pescia an den Olympischen Winterspielen in Turin teil. Die Mannschaft belegte den fünften Platz.
An der WM 2006 erreichte das Team den fünften,
2008 (Pescia skippte) den elften Platz.
Thomas Ulsrud (NOR)
In his second World
Junior Curling Championships, Ulsrud skipped Norway to a
bronze medal in 1988.
In 1997, he played in
his first European Curling Championships where
his team finished seventh. He returned in 2000,
2002 and 2003, winning bronze in 2002. In 1998,
Ulsrud played in his first World Curling Championships where he skipped Norway to a fifth
place finish. He returned in 1999 as an alternate for Pål Trulsen and finished in fifth place
again. At the 2006 World Men’s Curling Championships, Ulsrud made the playoffs for the first
time, and defeated team USA to win the bronze
medal. Ulsrud failed to make the playoffs in
2007, but returned at the 2008 World Men’s Curling Championships, where he defeated China
to win the bronze medal. Norway, with skip
Thomas Ulsrud, third Torger Nergard, second
Christoffer Svae, lead Havard Vad Petersson
and alternate Thomas Due won the silver medal
at the European Curling Championships in Füssen in December, 2007. In the 2009 World Men’s
Curling Championships in Moncton, N.B., the team
won the bronze medal beating Ralph Stöckli.
At the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, Team
Ulsrud attracted worldwide attention, not only
for introducing Loudmouth Golf’s colourful harlequin pants to the arena, but also for winning
the silver medal after the final game against
Canada’s Team Kevin Martin.
Markku Uusipaavalniemi (FIN)
Uusipaavalniemi has been
involved in international play
for over two decades, and
he has been the skip of Finland since the mid-1990s. All
of Finland’s curling medals
have been achieved with
Uusipaavalniemi as skip.
In 2005, Uusipaavalniemi was nicknamed M-15 –
“M” for Markku and “15” being the number of
letters in his last name – by an American player
Pete Fenson not able to pronounce his name. A
variant of this, U-15, is also commonly used. At
the 2006 Winter Olympics, a Canadian competitor
nicknamed him “Uusialphabet” for the same reason. In Finland, though, Uusis may be his most
frequently used nickname. Uusipaavalniemi lives
in Hyvinkää with his wife and three children
Uusipaavalniemi is a two-time European Curling
Championships bronze medalist (1999 and 2001).
In 2000 he won the tournament. He is also a twotime World Curling Championships bronze meda-

list (1998 and 2000). In 2005 Uusipaavalniemi’s
team finished the round-robin tied for first place
with five other teams on an 8-3 record. In the
tie-breakers however, they were knocked out
of contention by Canada’s Randy Ferbey. At the
2007 World Champion-ships they finished sixth.
Uusipaavalniemi’s Finland team finished fifth at
the 2002 Olympics. At the 2006 Olympics they
won the round-robin. They beat Great Britain
4-3 in the semi final, with the last stone of the
final end (thrown by Uusipaavalniemi) giving
the Finns the deciding point. Finland lost the
final to Canada 10-4, taking the silver medal.

Christof Schwaller (SUI)
Christof Schwaller wurde am
3. Oktober 1966 geboren. Sein
internationales Debüt hatte er
im Jahr 1988 bei der Juniorenweltmeisterschaft in Füssen;
er blieb aber ohne Medaille. 2001 gewann der bei der
WM in Lausanne mit Silber seine erste Medaille.
Schwaller spielte auf der Position Third der Schweizer Mannschaft bei den XIX. Olympischen Win-

terspielen im Curling. Die Mannschaft gewann
am 22. Februar 2002 die Olympische Bronzemedaille nach einem 7:3-Siege gegen Schweden.
Seit 2006 baute Schwaller (Third) zusammen mit
Karnusian (Skip) ein Team auf. Diese Kombination war sehr erfolgreich und das Team konnte
die Schweiz an der EM 2008 vertreten (4. Rang).
An der WM 2010 belegte das Team den 6. Rang.
Niklas Edin (SWE)
Niklas Edin was
born July 6, 1985 in
Örnsköldsvik.
In 2004, Edin skipped
his Swedish team
to a World Junior
Curling Championship title. In the final, Sweden defeated Stefan Rindlisbacher of Switzerland. In 2005, Edin was the skip of the Swedish
team that won a silver medal at the European
Mixed Curling Championships. In 2008, he took
the bronze medal at the same tournament.
In 2006 and 2007, Edin won a silver medal in the
World Junior Championships. The team qualified for the 2006 World Men’s Curling Championship, finishing in fifth place.
In 2009 he won the Winter Universiade. Later
that year, he won a gold medal at the European Curling Championships, in his first appearance. This made him a medal threat at the 2010
Winter Olympics. However, he skipped Sweden
to a fourth place finish, losing the bronze medal
game to Switzerland’s Ralph Stöckli.

The Baden Masters is open for 20 teams playing
a round robin in 4 groups of 5 teams.
In the quarter finals the first ranked teams have
the hammer.
Each game is played over 8 ends. If the game is
tied after 8 ends, an extra end will be played.
If this end has no score, Last Stone Draw
(LSD) shootout after extra end will decide the
winner.
After the quarter and the semi final, LSD will
determine which team has the hammer in the
next game.
Stone Game (DSC)
The best two teams from each group will play in
the quarter finals, where the first ranked teams
will play the second ranked teams from another
group.

The five teams with the least distance will receive
price money.
The rank list results in the average of the best
3 draws of the 4 LSDs after the round robin
games.
The winners of the semi final will play in the
final for first and second place, the two other
teams for 3rd and 4th place.
All stones finishing in the house are measured.
Stones that do not finish in the house are recorded as 185.4 cm (6 ft. 1 in.) Stones that finish so
close to the tee that they cannot be measured
are recorded as 0.0 cm.
There are no time clocks, but teams will be
required to adhere to the scheduled game plan.
WCF rules apply.
Ranking procedure round robin
Hammer
In the first round the two teams flip a coin for
the hammer.
In the following rounds of the round robin the
LSD will determine which team has the hammer in the next game except the teams playing
the team that had the bye in the first draw.
1) Teams will be ranked according to their
win / loss record.
2) If two teams are tied, the team that won their
round robin game will be ranked higher.
3) Where three or more teams are tied, the
record of the games between the tied teams
shall provide the ranking. If teams are still tied
then stone game will determine ranking.
LSD: After each game each team delivers one
stone, with sweeping allowed, to the tee at the
home end. The winning team will play first.

Herzlich willkommen!
Die Stadt Baden hat sich als CurlingStadt etabliert. Die Baden Masters
stehen inzwischen fix auf der SportAgenda unserer Stadt. Mich freut, dass
sich damit in unserer an Traditionen
reichen Stadt eine weitere dazugesellt
hat.
Über den Curling-Sport möchte ich an dieser Stelle keine weiteren Worte verlieren. Dazu sind andere berufener als ich. Erlauben Sie mir aber, etwas über unsere Stadt zu sagen. Da immerhin bewege ich mich nicht auf dem Glatteis.
Ich weiss nicht, ob Sie alle, die Sie aus aller Welt nach Baden
angereist sind, den Namen unserer Stadt schon einmal gehört
haben. Ich sage aber ganz unbescheiden: Ob Sie aus dem hohen
Norden, aus Übersee oder dem fernen Osten kommen – wundern
würde mich nicht, Sie kennen Baden, auch wenn Sie zum ersten
Mal hier sind. Warum? Baden ist erstens eine alte Stadt mit einer langen Geschichte, hat zweitens eine Vergangenheit als ein
weit über die Grenzen der Schweiz hinaus bekannter Bade- und
Kongressort und war drittens und schliesslich im 20. Jahrhundert
Sitz der Weltfirma Brown, Boveri & Cie. BBC. Sie hat in alle Weltgegenden Turbinen geliefert und hat in zahlreichen Ländern auf
der ganzen Welt Kraftwerke gebaut.
So international, weltoffen und dem Neuen zugewandt unsere
Stadt seit Jahrhunderten ist: Die mittelalterliche Altstadt ist praktisch unverändert erhalten geblieben. Ich darf Ihnen empfehlen,
einen Spaziergang von der Curling-Halle durch den Wald in die
Stadt zu machen und dort in den Gassen der Altstadt in eine Zeit
lange vor der unseren einzutauchen. Keine Bange: Schenken
und Wirtschaften hat es in unserer Stadt schon immer genügend
viele gegeben. Daran hat sich nichts geändert.
Zum Schluss doch noch etwas zum Curling-Sport – und was ihn
ebenfalls mit unserer Stadt verbindet. Bei den Curlern dreht sich
bekanntlich alles um den Stein. Auch die Stadt Baden hat ihren
Stein. Stein ist der Name der Burg über unserer Stadt. Sie ist vor
bald 300 Jahren bei einer kriegerischen Auseinandersetzung zur
Ruine geworden. Aber der Stein ist nach wie vor Wahrzeichen
unserer Stadt.
Wenn ich Ihnen allen nun – wie es bei Ihnen üblich ist – «Gut
Stein» wünsche, dürfen Sie dies durchaus doppeldeutig verstehen – als Wunsch auf gute Curling-Spiele, aber auch als Einladung, das Wahrzeichen unserer Stadt zu besuchen.
