Principals Report
It seems hard to believe that we have almost reached the end of Term 1! It has certainly been a busy term for all our
staff and students with many key activities and events reported elsewhere in this newsletter.
Teaching and Learning
In the last newsletter I wrote about our strategic plan for the next four years and our major focus on our core
business of Teaching and Learning and prioritising your child’s learning. This term our staff have completed a weekly
Professional Development program which has included developing curriculum ‘Scope and Sequence’ models,
developing appropriate pre-testing methods, ways to accurately map students to the Ausvels Curriculum, how to
benchmark students to a level and record and measure growth from that level. This has set us up well for our
Professional Development for the rest of the year in order to meet our strategic plans targets and goals.
Parent Teacher Meetings
Parent Teacher meetings are being held this afternoon and this evening. I strongly encourage all families to take advantage of the
opportunity to come and talk to their student’s teachers about their learning and the growth and progress they are making in each subject
area.
Open Night 2015
Last night we had over 250 visitors come to the College and tour our facilities and see our students involved in various programs and
activities across the College. A terrific atmosphere prevailed and we had some great feedback from many visitors and the tour groups
appeared really engaged in the different sessions and displays. I would also like to thank the many staff, students, student leaders, school
councillors and parents who volunteered to help showcase our school and provide refreshments on the night.
If you were unable to attend and would like a tour of the College please contact the office to arrange a time.
Year 7 Camp
It was a pleasure to recently visit the Year 7 Camp at Phillip Island for the day. I can honestly say we have a great bunch of Year 7 students
this year who have many skills and talents in a variety of areas! My thanks to all the staff who ensured a smooth operation and a camp
enjoyed by all who participated. A big thanks also to the Year 10 student leaders who did an outstanding job working with the Year 7’s and
running the activities.
Athletic Sports
The poor weather did nothing to dampen the spirits or enthusiasm of our students on Tuesday as we held the 2015 Aths Day on our Athletics
field. The rain fell on and off but the records slowly tumbled all day. With great support from the side lines the momentum held out and
many students were able to showcase their various talents in different events. Well done to all who participated and won places in their
events. A big thank you to Mrs Hall for her excellent organisation of the day and congratulations to the staff relay team for winning the staff
v’s student event!
ICT @ WPSC
Earlier in the term we completed a 12 month review of our ICT department which culminated in some staff changes. We now have two new
technicians working at the school and over the holidays we will be upgrading our server and related infrastructure which will help to improve
access to ICT and capability on a number of fronts.
Staff Changes
This term we farewell a number of staff. Ms Jacqui Smith and Mr Neil Uren (both currently on leave) have retired, Mr Peter Bruce (IT), Mr
Terry Daemon (IT), Ms Monique DeRoche (School Nurse) and Ms Tanya Au are also leaving us this term to take up new positions and
challenges elsewhere. Mr Mark Murphy who has helped us out this term will also be finishing up.
I am pleased to welcome the following staff who have joined or are joining us next term:
Mr Conor Bryant (IT), Mr Matt Fernandez (IT) and Mr Brett Rodwell (Design Technology and Building and Construction). Mr Andrew
McDonald is returning full time as of Term 2. I will advise other appointments in the next newsletter.

I would like to wish all students and their families a pleasant and relaxing break in the holidays and a very Happy Easter.

Assistant Principal
Last week I had the pleasure of going on the Year 7 Camp to Phillip Island.
I have been on at least 15 camps while I have been at Western Port
Secondary College and this was one of the best. I believe that this is due to
the work our Year 7 Team has done in developing the new Year 7 Learning
Space and the ‘culture of learning’ created within this space. This is not to
denigrate work done in previous years by previous teams but to celebrate
the work that has been done in the last 12 months in particular to
progress our school and develop curriculum that individualises learning for
every student. It was clear from the way students interacted with each
other and behaved that they are clear about what is expected of them and
what they can expect of their teachers. I have selected a few photos that demonstrate to me
the importance and value of the Year 7 Camp experience ie:
To take students to ‘new’ environments so that they can experience new things and
understand the value and importance of our local natural, historical and cultural
resources
To challenge young people to step outside their comfort zones and take a risk to build
resilience and coping capabilities
To work as part of a team to help and support each individual to achieve their personal best
and to learn from each other’s individual strengths and expertise
To work with the year 10 Leaders who model leadership skills and support and encourage
the Year 7s
To have a chance to have some fun with their teachers and build positive relationships with
them
One of the highlights of the camp was the Tuesday evening performances by students and staff.
Clearly the Year 7s have a broad repertoire of talents that we, as a school, will benefit from in
years to come. I look forward to seeing a few budding actors, comedians, dancers and singers
develop their talents!
Wishing all families a safe and happy Easter break.

Peninsula VCAL Carnival Winners
On Thursday 19th of March all Year 11 and 12 VCAL students
participated in an interschool VCAL competition. After a hard fought
battle throughout the day, Western Port Secondary was declared the
victor!
The highlight of the day was the raft competition. Students built their
own raft at school over the last few weeks, then launched and raced
it in Patterson River at the Water Sport Centre. A massive shout out
to Jess Pike, Jack Cox, Ryan Vannistelrooy and Justin Green for
paddling our raft to victory!
The other competitions ran on the day were Tug of War, Sack Races,
Physical Fitness round robins etc. The entire day was run by students
as part of their VCAL course and all students did exceptionally well.
Congratulations on a well deserved win – Go Western Port!!
'One-punch' advertisement by boxer Danny Green a good place to start
the conversation with kids.
Recent media attention has been focussed on the poor choices young people are making when it comes to acts of violence. A new
15 second advertisement shows Danny Green intervening in an argument by stopping someone about to throw a punch. The
advertisement works to raise awareness and address the culture of binge-drinking and associated violence.
Danny Green says he hopes his campaign against the assaults will deter young men from starting fights and help to change people's
attitudes.
"If you're going to conduct yourself in that way and go and crack someone for no reason at all, then it's a coward's thing to do," he
said.
"We're all on the same page, we all just want to try and make a change.
"I guess the culture, [needs to] have a shift in the way we think. Especially young blokes who think it's acceptable or tough to go out
and assault someone in a senseless and cowardly, unprovoked attack."
Western Port Secondary has a zero tolerance approach to physical violence and while education in school occurs, it needs to be
reinforced in all areas of our community. This video is a good place to start.
Wonthaggi Human Powered Grand Prix
Last weekend the Western Port SC Human Powered Vehicle team
participated in the 18th Wonthaggi Human Powered Grand Prix. The
weekend started on Friday with scrutineering, which includes the HPV
being assessed for safety and design specifications. Included in
scrutineering is the ‘Design and Innovation’ presentation where students
show and explain to the judges the construction methods, design and
materials and any innovative additions used within the trike. Having
designed the trike 2 weeks earlier, the students discussed the use of HIP’s
plastic for the fairing and the troubles confronted and overcome during the
construction phase.
Race day arrived and after shaking the frost off the tents the team headed
out to set up the pit area and prepare for the 60min practice session,
providing riders with the chance to familiarise with the track, conditions
and warm up.
Lap times from the practice session resulted in starting grid positions. After
lining up on the grid, singing the national anthem and parade lap behind the
safety car, the Australian Flag was waved to signal the start of the 24 hour
Human Powered Grand Prix.
With Isaac starting the race and avoiding the early chaos of trikes jostling
for position, the riders settled into a good pace with each rider completing
around 30mins per riding stint. Riding in shifts throughout the afternoon and into the night, the team of riders worked together to
support and encourage each other. A few chaotic moments including roll overs by Ruby, Noah, Beth, Alex and Georgia, resulting in the
WPSC HPV showing the signs of battle. Great rides from Aaron and first time 24 hour rider Chloe, the team battled with Bendigo SE
College and arch rivals Drouin SC to finish the 24 hours race in 10th position in the Middle Secondary Class.
The next event will see the team compete in the Bendigo HPV Grand Prix over 10 hours in August.
Congratulations to Georgia Walker, Ruby Cargill, Chloe Massari, Beth McCullagh, Noah Whitford, Aaron Whitford, Isaac Cunningham
and Alex Monck for their fantastic effort for the Wonthaggi HPV Grand Prix.
The race by numbers:
8 riders
24 hours

GIRLS WELLBEING @ WESTERN PORT SC
The Girls Wellbeing program reignited with a bang this term. Each week up to 20
girls attend and partake in a variety of activities to promote personal wellbeing and
social connectedness. This term we have made beautiful dream catchers,
participated in drama games, chilled out with meditation and made compliments
cards. We always finish with a shared healthy snack.
The girls report that Friday is their favorite day!
This voluntary lunchtime program, runs each Friday, and provides a safe and
inclusive environment whereby girls can participate in activities to promote
wellbeing, share a healthy lunch and meet other girls. The only rule for the
program is that it is inclusive of any girl who wants to attend. Girls from Year 7
through to Year 11 attend each week. Last year’s feedback of the program was
very positive. The girls cited their reasons for attending to be:




To meet other girls
Something to do at lunchtime
To have a good feed
Helps if having a bad day
Because it’s fun
And I think it’s safe to say that we enjoy the girls wellbeing program as much as they do!

Beyond Blue Traveling Circus
On Friday 6th March all Year 7’s at WPSC were involved in an incursion from the Beyond
Blue Traveling Circus, which was delivered by aerial acrobat, circus teacher and
personal trainer Isi Lumbroso and her team from Ready Set Play Kids.
This event was linked to our Health Promoting Schools Initiative which focuses on
young people and their mental health.
The Travelling Circus staff aimed to develop an awareness of mental health and
wellbeing for our students by making the analogy that life’s like a circus : it involves risk
taking, juggling and balancing tasks and responsibilities.
The Beyond Blue staff outlined pathways for help, support and advice and aimed to
engage our students into thinking and discussing ideas that support positive risk taking,
trust, friendship and positive peer group engagement.
The Year 10 Leaders were also a welcome part of the action to support and encourage
the Year 7 students.

ACCESS MONASH CHAMPIONS DAY
On Thursday, 19th March, Georgia Baker and Bella Goddard and Gina got the opportunity to
attend an Access Monash Champions day at the Frankston campus.
There were several schools attending the day and everyone got an opportunity to look around
the campus and meet new people.
We learnt new leadership skills that will be very useful for our future endeavours. The day was
very eventful, exciting and informative.
Overall Access Monash Champions days was a very successful and inspirational day and worth
attending.

Clean Up Australia Day
Students were joined by Councillor David Garnock and
Michelle from Mornington Peninsula Shire. They
cleaned the area along High Street.
Briars Environment Week
Students presented an activity to 10 groups 14 groups of Primary School students on Reducing Waste over 4 days. They created a
timeline which showed how long it takes for ‘Waste’ items to decompose. A plastic drink bottle – 500 years ! A disposable nappy 75
years ! polystyrene NEVER !
A larger group of students assisted the many presenters in the Expo Paddock.
ANNUAL HOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Thursday February 19th was the 42nd House Swimming Carnival for Western
Port Secondary College. The students were exceptionally well behaved and
enjoying the competition plus the funky music.
The enthusiasm shown by all students but particularly the Year 12’s in the
“under the sea parade” was inspiring with Molly Walker as Ursula the witch
and Georgia Cox and Molly Palser as Scuba Steve, Tash Green as a mermaid,
Shaye Williams and Tayla Gilbert as Sassy Sailors , both acts winning the
canteen vouchers worth $10 each. It was good to see most students getting
involved in the novelty events which added to the atmosphere of the day.
Thanks to all staff, parents and students for making this day a great success.
It was a very close competition with a very exciting finish with Leeuwin being the eventual winners beating Cerberus in the relays by
just a few points.
The scores were:

Southern Peninsula Division Swimming Carnival
On Thursday March 12th the interschool swimming team competed at the combined Southern Peninsula Division swimming carnival at
Pines Forest pool. Over the course of the day a number of students swam well beyond what was asked. These students deserve as
much credit as our medal place getters. All students performed to their personal bests but were outclassed by a stronger well-trained
opposition. Thanks to staff, parents and students for their support. Again some students did not attend which makes it so much more
demanding on just a few. Overall Western Port came fifth, a great team effort.
Jack Shkreli will represent WPSC at the Southern Metropolitan finals at MSAC on Thursday March 26 th. We wish him all the best.
A GREAT ACHIEVEMENT!

Year 9/10 Girls Cricket
On Tuesday February 17th the year 9/10 girls
played at Emil Madsen in a round robin
competition. The girls won the first game
against Mt Eliza, but lost the second to
Dromana who ended up the winners on the
day. The third game was a fight for the grand
final as 3 teams were on equal wins. The girls
just beat Rosebud by 4 runs giving them 2 wins
which tied with Mornington 1. But Mornington
had a better percentage so we played off for 3 rd
position. With some superb bowling, fielding
and batting the girls won very convincingly by
160-40. Jordan Watson best score was 78 off 2
overs. Well done girls on your sportsmanship
and team co-operation. The girls conduct on
the day was outstanding.

Year 10 Mock Job Interviews
On 18th and 19th March, all students in Year 10 at Western Port
Secondary College participated in Mock Job Interviews. This year,
the students had completed varied learning tasks in their
Channelling Futures classes where they investigated a range of
careers. They also prepared a cover letter, resume and practiced
interview skills relating to an occupation they intended to secure
work experience in during Term Two.
For students growing up in a society where there has been a
significant shift in economies from manufacturing to emphasizing
information and knowledge services, the College recognises the
change in career options available to young people, and are
actively supporting our students to develop their 21st Century
skills. Research reveals that amongst other factors, success lies in
being able to communicate, share, and use information to solve
complex problems, in being able to adapt and innovate in response
to new demands and changing circumstances. The College sees
these interviews as highly beneficial for preparing our students to
be equipped with the skills required to transition smoothly into the
world of work and contribute as valued citizens in our community.
The interviewers were members of the local community who
volunteered their time to assist these young people in practicing
their interview skills and techniques. Representatives from local
Rotary, The Port of Hastings, Bowens Timber and Hardware, Skills
Plus, Mornington Peninsula Tourism and other local businesses
were in attendance. Western Port Secondary College is grateful for
the support the community provides.
The students greatly appreciated the opportunity provided and
relished in the chance to have their interview skills put to the test
by challenging yet supportive interviews. All participants
commended the process.
Local members of the community are strongly urged to contact
Western Port Secondary College if they are able to assist in the
Mock Job Interviews in 2016, or assist with providing Work
Experience positions.
