One can hardly overestimate the importance of experimental
institutions, which work more freely than major museums and
commercial galleries. In Stockholm, Index is perhaps the most
convincing example of such a platform for new generations of
artists, both Swedish and international. Index presented a show
by Eija-Liisa Ahtila long before she became a big name. The
same is true for Wolfgang Tillmans and the duo
Elmgreen/Dragset. Index also re-introduced artists that had
great importance in previous decades and helped to retrieve
their relevance, such as Sture Johannesson and J O Mallander.
Index is, in short, a key institution for the Scandinavian art
scene.

Index
In 2015, Index celebrates its 40th anniversary!
In celebrating 40 successful years as one of the most progressive art institutions in
Scandinavia, Index invites you to bid on works of art by outstanding Swedish and
international artists working in a wide range of media, both from established and up and
coming generations. Proceeds of the auction constitute an important part in further
developments of the longstanding foundation, and will help to support Index in maintaining its
position as one of the most ambitious spaces for contemporary art into its next decade.
About Index
Index – The Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation, based in Stockholm, is one of
Scandinavia’s leading contemporary art institutions. Originally established as
Fotograficentrum, the organization presented its first exhibition in 1975 and was renamed and
transformed into a foundation in 1998. Throughout the years Index has acquired an
indisputable importance locally and internationally thanks to an ambitious and high-quality
program of exhibitions and events with both emerging and established artists from Sweden
and abroad. Through a visionary and forward-looking program and by working closely with
artists at early stages of their careers, the organization has built an impressive legacy and an
important institutional model for the presentation and production of contemporary art.
In the years ahead Index has ambitious plans to build on its successful history and make
crucial steps to ensure its future. Evolved from an artist-run initiative, Index is today an
organization that serves a wide-range of audiences. We are the only public organization for
contemporary art operating in the city centre of Stockholm. Plans for the coming year include
a reconfiguration and expansion of our existing spaces, enhanced marketing and
communication as well as the development of a comprehensive learning program for all ages.
These activities will form the basis of the institution’s long-term audience development and
mediation strategy and enable the organization to continue to grow in order to serve artists and
the public in the best way possible.
Aim of the benefit auction on 20 May 2015 is to support Index current activities, and to
initiate a longer-term fundraising process that will allow the organization to stabilize its
economy. The auction will be an important source of funding for the institution's immediate
development and will coincide with the celebration of the institutions 40th anniversary. Artists
that were invited to contribute have previously worked with Index or have an affiliation
through interest or friendship. In this way, the auction will represent the culmination of four
decades of work and reflect the institutions relations to the dedicated local and international
community. The auction will be held in Stockholm, at the legendary Café Opera in
Stockholm's opera house, and aims to create an interesting and powerful social event for
potential supporters in the city. There is also an opportunity for online bids for interested
people aborad.
Index continues to operate with funding from the Swedish Arts Council, the City and the
Municipality of Stockholm. It is our belief that public funding must form the basis of a public
arts organization. In challenging times, it is an important signal that we are able to find
alternative ways to initiate further development, and that different stakeholders – public
funders, private sponsors and artists – are working together to achieve ambitious goals.
Index
Programme
Index is based in the centre of Stockholm and offers an ambitious program of exhibitions,
events and learning activities for a wide range of audiences. As one of the longest-standing
spaces for contemporary art in Scandinavia, Index has an excellent reputation for the
consistency of its work over the years both nationally and internationally, and serves as an
important platform and source of inspiration for cultural professionals in Stockholm. The
gallery is based in a unique situation in a residential building from the 1930s which is both
very centrally located and specifically linked to the neighbourhood and its residents.
The core of Index activities is the ambitious program with a framework of five projects per
year – exhibitions in the gallery and in public space, process-based activities, publications and
live events, supported by an extensive program of public talks and educational activities. The
program is developed with a strong network of partnerships within Stockholm as well as
nationally and internationally. Exhibitions include new productions and ambitious curated
projects, alongside presentations by artists from previous generations shown in a new
perspective. Due to its specific history and size, Index is able to combine an ambition to
produce projects of highest artistic quality with a flexible program and a search for new forms
of presentation and working. Index takes risks and experiments with new forms of
presentation, in close conversation with its audiences.
The aim of Index is to create public access to current artistic practices of the highest quality,
and to engage with artists’ work that have a social ambition. All aspects of the program are
considered equally important as part of an integrated vision, providing multiple 'ways in' for
different audiences ranging from family programs to discursive activities for artist's audiences
and experts.
Index’ program engages with the specific needs and aspirations of the manifold sections of the
community and responds to social differences. By having a variety of program activities,
including workshops, talks and discussions, we aim to deliver different occasions for our
audiences to participate and get involved in the program and to have an engaging and inspiring
experience. In addition, Index is currently working on an expanded strategy for learning and
audience development activities, which will increase and broaden the impact of Index'
program significantly and create closer connections between the organization and the
audiences in Sweden.
