Letter From the President
ROSELLE PARK DISTRICT
Summer 2011
Dear Residents:
Budget time is upon us as I write this. The District’s two top objectives for this process are 1) taking care of what we have
and 2) enhancing customer service. An ultimate goal is to produce a strategic plan to further enhance our stewardship and
aid in decision making.
Most of us on the Park Board remember the days when we had to “rob Peter to pay Paul.” When the tax cap was established
in 1991, Roselle Park District had just built Clauss Recreation Center. We could not have been in a worse place financially.
Cuts to service and cuts to personnel all followed in the subsequent years. We had a Director at the time, with a finance
background. She kept the doors open through the toughest days. By the time I came on board, she had just left and we
hired a Director with vast Parks and Recreation experience, particularly in putting together management teams. From his
team came our next Director who worked tirelessly to get the Kemmerling Park and Pool project completed. The community said “no” to three iterations of a plan, but by the fourth referendum, the District and the public had come to understand
what was best for the community as a whole. The beautiful facility built with input from all corners of Roselle continues to
add value to the Village’s image and provides the “heart” that was sorely missed for the seven summers we lived without it.
Why the history lesson? The community passed a referendum for operating funds 8 years ago. That wonderful act planted
the seeds that led to better and better services for our community. With a little money to work with, the District has been
able to add amenities, slowly but surely, and keep what we have going strong. We “get it” -- we are the affordable alternative for many during these times of economic uncertainty. The current Director comes from a background of revenue
generating facilities. He “gets it.”
Emerald Ash Borer has made its presence known in our community. The Park District and the Village of Roselle both applied for grant money to combat this intruder. The vIllage was awarded a grant. The Park District was not. That doesn’t
mean we won’t be doing our part in this joint venture. It just means we have a tough choice to make somewhere else.
Rest assured, trees are something we hold dear...the more the merrier, nasty bug or not!
Before you know it, summer will be here...as you will see in our marketing: “Come to our parks and discover fun!”
Many new programs are planned to lure us out and about: Pilates in the Park, Tai Chi in the Park, and Play and Party in the
Park -- you get the picture!
New events this summer at Kemmerling Pool include float nights, catered events and much more! Specialty clinics will be
offered for softball, speed (baseball), golf, swimming and tennis.
For more info, check out our new website: www.rparks.org
Wishing you the best of the summer season, here in Roselle -- a great place to live, work and play!

ROSELLE PARK DISTRICT
Roselle Swim School (DK)
Your child will gain confidence and swimming
skills that will prepare them for swim team
or simply keep you at ease when at the
pool. This program focuses on a progression
of water skills that increases your child’s
confidence in the water as they continue
in the program. The skills are designed to
challenge each swimmer to reach their full
potential. A Safety Day will be incorporated
into each session. Upon completion, each
participant will receive a certificate of
achievement. Swimmers who complete
all of the skills in the level will receive a
ribbon and move on to the next level.
Age ranges are suggested. Skills listed are
requirements to pass the level.
Registration deadline
is 12:30 pm on the Saturday before each
session begins.
• In the event of inclement weather,
staff will make the decision to cancel class
approximately one half-hour prior to the start
of the lesson. If weather is questionable,
please call the Kemmerling Pool Weather
Hotline 30 minutes prior to your lesson to
confirm lesson status.
• Due to the limited amount of space
surrounding the pool, parents and other
spectators will be permitted to sit in lounge
chairs on the edge of the zero depth pool and
in the concession area only.
• There will be no make up lessons scheduled
for participants that fail to come to their
regularly scheduled lesson. In order to ensure
low ratios, quality lessons and instructor
availability, participants must attend the time
slot that they have registered for.
• All refund requests must be made at least
two business days before the first lesson of
a session. Please note that there will be
no refunds issued after the session has
begun. Any refund requested with two or
more business days notice, prior to the first
lesson will receive a full refund, less $5 for
administrative costs.

Roselle Racer Swim Team
AGES 3 TO 8 +YEARS OLD
Roselle Racers
Roselle Racers Swim Team (DK)
Calling all swimmers…new and returning
swimmers are invited to join the Roselle Racers Swim Team for a fun-filled summer at the
Kemmerling Pool! Kemmerling Pool is conveniently located here in town at Prospect and
Bryn Mawr Avenue. Many swimmers may be
able to walk or ride their bike to those early
morning practices!
The Roselle Racers are a member of the
DuPage Swim and Dive Conference. This
competitive swimming program is designed
for swimmers 5-18 years old. Swimmers age
8 and under must be able to swim one length
of the pool without stopping; swimmers 9
and over must be able to swim two lengths.
Swimmers compete against individuals in
their own age group. New team members
attend a swimming tryout before they can
be on the team. The tryout dates will be announced at registration.
Being a member of the swim team requires
purchasing a pool pass and attending morning practices regularly. These practices help
swimmers develop fundamental swimming
skills, including four different competitive
swim strokes. Swim meets take place on
Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings with a fantastic social network of family
volunteers to ensure their success. The swim
team is a great way to make friends and get
fit! For more information, visit
http://www.roselleracers.org/.
REGISTRATION NIGHTS:
April 25 and 28 from 6-8 pm
Members of the swim team parent club will be
present to provide information and answer
questions. In addition, swim team suits and other
attire will be available for viewing, fitting and
ordering. Practice and meet times will be
announced on these evenings as well.
REGISTRATION
If you cannot make either registration night,
you may still join by completing a registration
packet at the CRC front desk before
May 9 for a special EARLY BIRD RATE! The
final registration deadline is May 18.
Racer’s 40th Anniversary!
Were you a Roselle Racer? Next summer the Roselle Racer Swim Team will turn 40 years old and
we are looking for old pictures, memories, and contact information for all swimmers! The summer will be filled with special activities for all alumni, including participating in the parade in
June! Please check out our website http://www.roselleracers.org/ for upcoming events! Contact
Barb Layer at [email protected] for more information.

The Soccer Made in America Training Camp
offers a fully integrated program of soccer
techniques and tactics. The camp is designed
to teach players proper technical skills while
enjoying playing soccer. Professional clinicians
will provide five consecutive half-day sessions
of soccer instruction and games. Players are
divided into groups of ten or less according to
ability first and age second. Beginning players
will be introduced to the fundamental techniques and apply them in games. Intermediate
players who have mastered basic techniques
will be challenged to higher-level competition.
We are happy to announce our 3rd season Youth Tennis Camp schedule. One and two week
sessions will be conveniently held at our Kemmerling Park tennis courts Mondays through
Thursdays (except July 4th week). Expert instruction for ages 8 thru 18 will be conducted with
emphasis on learning the basics right through advanced skills. Please bring your tennis racket.

Fall Youth Soccer League (VO)
Emphasis in the Mid-Suburban Soccer League
is placed on individual instruction, teamwork,
and sportsmanship. Teams will be based on
approximately 12 to 15 players per roster
depending on age groups. Waiting lists will
be used until there are enough players and
a volunteer head coach to form another
team. Games are played on Saturdays against
neighboring park districts. Competition will
start September 10. Practices will be held
during the week based on coach’s availability.
Practices will start two weeks prior to game
play dependent upon securing enough
volunteer coaches. Parents will receive a
call from their child’s coach once the team
selection process is completed informing
them of first practice location, date and
time. Registering before the July 18 deadline
does not necessarily guarantee a spot on a
team due to minimum/maximum numbers
established to form a team.
Take advantage of our early-bird sign-up fee of $53 by registering before July 18. All
registrations submitted from July 18 on will be charged an additional $10 and, again,
players cannot be guaranteed a spot on a team.
Please indicate on enrollment form if you would be able to manage a team. Also, please let our
front desk staff know if you would be interested in coaching. They will make note of this in our
computer registration software. If you are not familiar with the game of soccer, don’t worry, we
can teach you everything you need to know.

Through a variety of fun and creative
activities, young children (5+) and adults will
develop coordination, strength, and personal
safety skills in a well-supervised setting. The
self-assurance gained through Shotokan
Karate helps foster a strong, positive selfimage. The mental aspect involved in karate
builds self-confidence, control, and discipline.
The physical aspect of this program is both
enjoyable and beneficial. Our program
will give your child the lead she/he needs
in developing memory and agility skills
necessary to be successful in school and
other sports, while improving overall muscle
tone. Karate is ideal for adults as it releases
tension and develops cardiovascular fitness.
All classes are taught by instructors of the
Illinois Shotokan Karate Club under the
direction of John DiPasquale (6th degree
black belt), four time National Champion,
former U.S. team member, Karate National
Coach, and National Faculty Member of ACEP

Youth Anti-Bullying and Safety

Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do
Adult Self-Defense (VO)
Most youth martial arts programs will teach
your child how to defend themselves as
they did over 1000 years ago. Times have
changed! You don’t give your child an old
fashioned type writer when trying to teach
them computer skills, right? Then why would
one want their children to learn out of date
self-defense strategies? This class will give
them the skills to defend themselves against
bullies, help any of their classmates who are
getting bullied, and focus on non-physical
just as much as physical means of defusing an
altercation. We’ll also equip your child with
tools to heighten their awareness against
abductors, and avoid predators. Character
lessons such as building self-esteem and
respect for others is also an added benefit.
Most adults don’t have years to dedicate
to self-defense training. Against popular
belief it is quick, very simple, and easy to
learn. During this class we’ll teach you about
the “range” of self-defense few “martial
arts masters” know about, in addition to
weapons defense and other secrets of the
American martial arts icon Bruce Lee taught
through his art of Jeet Kune Do. Learn from
an organization who is only 1 of 12 Midwest
Academies certified to teach it! Absolutely
no experience needed, as all participants will
also realize what an incredible workout this is!

Keeping a Gratitude Journal (DK)
Learn a more positive way of thinking, and
appreciate the things you have. A recent
study has found that people who keep a
gratitude journal, in which they wrote down
the things they are grateful for, were less
likely to be stressed and unhappy than those
people who did not keep a journal. Real life
isn’t always perfect; it doesn’t always go our

of what is working in your life can help
you not only survive, but surmount your

Finger Labyrinths (DK)
The labyrinth is not a maze;
it is a single path to the
center of the self. Using a wooden finger labyrinth you will bring the walking labyrinth to a
convenient easily usable format. When tracing a finger labyrinth you get the impression of
going on a long journey with many twists and turns, getting closer then further away before
finally reaching your destination. While tracing the sacred geometry of the labyrinth, the
combination of movement and introspection is used as a form of guided meditation, allowing
you to gain peace and engage in mystery for personal and spiritual renewal. Labyrinths
can provide a unique way to gain renewed vitality and meaning. Experience relief from the

W.O.W. Women on Weights (DK)
Strength training has been proved to benefit
all populations, from adolescent athletes to
seniors. Women, in particular, see tremendous
benefits from strength training. Traditionally,
women relied on cardiovascular activity and
a low calorie diet to change their physical
appearance. Unfortunately, low calorie diets
merely punish the soul and decrease the
metabolism. Without including consistent
strength training in our program, effecting
change can be an impossible goal. Strength
training is absolutely essential if we wish
to create visual changes in our bodies, and
we’ve discovered that the benefits of strength
training extend far beyond the visual.

Garden Plots
ROSELLE PARK DISTRICT
Garden Plots
Garden Plots (KK)
Do you want to grow your own fresh vegetables but you don’t have enough room in
your yard to garden? The park district has
established plots for you to use for a very
reasonable fee! Plots are located at the park
district maintenance building on the south
side of the Clauss Recreation Center area
(driving entrance located off of Mensching
Ave.). The plots are 6’ x 25’ with a 1’ fallow area
at each end. Reserve your plot today (limit of
one plot per household)!
Due to the flooding issues experienced last
summer all garden plots will now be assigned
from the top of the hill down.
PLEASE BE ADVISED:
Garden plots fill up fast! Please submit
completed registration form with check
or credit card information to be held for
payment of fee to ensure your participation
in the garden plot lottery. This lottery will
determine the final garden plot reservations.
Numbered plots will be issued at random
on “the” lottery date of Wednesday, April
20th, 2011, beginning at 1:00 pm with
the participating plot seekers on file.
RESERVATION OF PREVIOUSLY-HELD PLOT
NUMBERS (AND MULTIPLE PLOTS) FROM
YEAR-TO-YEAR IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE. In
order to ensure that all of our Park District
customers receive an equal opportunity to
receive a plot reservation, no reservations
from 2010 will be held. Registrations that do
not receive plots in the lottery will not have
their payment processed. If necessary, any
remaining plots available after the lottery
date will be filled with registrants on a firstcome, first serve basis.
58
OTHER NOTES:
• An adjacent water source with an ample
length of hose will be available at the plot
site
• Please do not drive your vehicle right next
to the garden plot area. Parking spaces will
be available in the maintenance center lot
ensuring a short walk to your plot (please
follow parking guidelines on posted signs)
• Plots will be ready for your gardening
(soil tilled, plots staked, water available, and
garbage pick-up) on Monday, May 2nd,
2011, weather permitting
• Not all garden plots are created equal:
Some of our plots on the grid may
experience excessive drainage from heavy
rainfall and erosion as a result. Park District
staff is not responsible for alleviating or
managing these weather/moisture
elements
Park District maintenance staff will only
perform the following:
1. Till existing soil ONCE in the spring season
(this will not be repeated by request; soil
workability, texture, and content is the
responsibility of garden plot holder
thereafter)
2. Measure out each 6’ x 25’ plot with posts
and number
3. Include 1’ fallow area at each end
4. Maintain adjacent hose/water source
5. Provide garbage pick-up from tall can in
the garden plot area
Any other work associated with the individual garden plots is the responsibility of the
reserving customer. Coordination of plot reservations is at the discretion of Park District
management.

The Roselle Miracle Field
The field is the first of its kind in the Roselle area, although over one hundred Miracle League
fields already exist across the country and about one hundred more are under construction.
Miracle Fields are made from a weather-resistant synthetic turf Called “Mondo” it is designed
specifically for wheelchair bound and/or physically disabled children and adults. The ball field
and dugout areas are fenced in so the players and activity stay in the designated area for safe
play. The base path distance is 45’ the distance from the mound to home plate is 32.75’ and the
distance for a home-run straight away center field is 117’. The district allows residents to use the
field for free; however the district does have organizations that have priority use to the fields as
a permit is required. This is a great area to play waffle ball or tee-ball with the family and friends.

In accordance with the Recreation
Department policy, all program
participants must sign a hold-harmless
agreement prior to participation in
department sponsored programs. The
waivers are on the bottom portion of
program registration forms, designated
sign-in sheets, and fitness membership
applications. These must be signed
by the adult participating in an adult
program; and by the parent or legal
than everyone waiting until the last
minute to register for it. There is a
point where if there aren’t enough
registrants to hold the program,

PLEASE BE ADVISED
No registrations can be processed MondayFriday after 7:00 p.m. or Saturday after 12:30
p.m. After these times the front desk can accept registration forms but they will not be
processed until the next day the front desk
is open. Please note: the front desk cannot
hold any full or partial cash payments. NO
EXCEPTIONS (CHECK or credit card information can be held). Also, there can be no
acceptance of any overage payments with
transactions. The District can only receive a
total payment of what the total corresponding fees necessitate. It is not possible for the
District to perform the service of providing
cash back or in-system credit on any overwritten personal checks, company checks,
government-issue checks, or money orders.
IN CASE OF AN ERROR
Complete details of program policies, procedures and guidelines are sometimes omitted
from the program brochures because of
space limitations. Also, errors in days, times,
registration requirements and fees may occur as well. We apologize for any errors that
may appear in the brochure. We thank you
for your patience and understanding when
these situations arise.
PROGRAM ROOM AND AREA LOCATIONS SOMETIMES MOVE AROUND!
Program locations are subject to change.
Roselle Park District staff reserves the right
to make changes to room/area locations if
deemed necessary for the participation and
safety of all our registrants and programs.
This type of flexibility is necessary to ensure
that all planned program sessions can meet
and activities can go as planned.

Registration Information
ROSELLE PARK DISTRICT
RESIDENCY
NON RESIDENT FEES
WAIT LIST PROCESS
Not all Roselle residents are Roselle Park District residents. Even though you may have a
Roselle address, you may pay taxes to another
park district.
Therefore, proof of residency is required when
registering for programs for the first time. This
may be done with a driver’s license, utility bill,
(or a mortgage statement for those who are
recently moving to the area).
Roselle Park District residents support the district through property tax contributions and
therefore these residents have first priority in
the registration process each program period.
Unless specified by a particular program, the
non-resident program fee is an additional $10
or 50% of the regular fee, whichever is less.
This does not apply to facility rentals. For all
facility rentals, Clauss Recreation Center, or
Turner Park, there is a consistent $25 increase
for non-residents in addition to the stated
resident fees.
A wait list is formed when a class reaches participant levels beyond the maximum. The wait
list is designed to maintain interested people
in a holding area until more spaces in the
program are available, someone drops out,
transfers, or a new section is added by park
district staff based on interest. The wait list is
maintained based on the order we process
registrations. Customers will be contacted for
confirmation before being added to one of
our wait lists (or transferred from a wait list
into the desired program) by the front desk or
specific program supervisor. Please note: before a participant is transferred into a program
all corresponding paperwork and payments
are required.
RETURNED CHECK POLICY
We gladly accept personal checks as payment. If for any reason a check is returned to
our office marked “NSF,” we will contact you.
You will then be required to submit a full cash
or money order payment, as well as a $30
bookkeeping fee, within a five business day
period. Class privileges will be suspended and
new registration will not be accepted until
payment is received.

have questions or believe you have been
unfairly discriminated against by the park
district, please contact the Roselle Park
District Director of Parks & Recreation at

form and call (630) 894-4200 to notify the park district. The Western Dupage Special Recreation Association may be contacted at (630) 681-0962 for additional
