OCTOBER 2014 LORD SANEESWARAN ( or LORD SHANI ) Lord Saneeswaran (the one who moves slowly) or Saneeswara (the God who is slow) is the planet Saturn among the nine planets. He is the son of Surya and Chaya and is the only planet with the epithet Iswara (God). He takes 30 years to make a full round of the Sun and so he becomes the slowest among the planets. He was made lame by his half brother Lord Yama (God of death). He is the owner of Makara and Kumbha rasi of the horoscope, powerless in mesha rasi and extremely powerful in Thula rasi. To please Lord Saneeswaran, it is necessary either to pray to him, or his friend Hanuman or Lord Iyappa of Sabari malai , or to light gingerly oil lamps in front of Lord Saneeswaran on Saturdays , or to give a copper pot full of gingerly oil as dhanam or gift to a holy religious person or priest, after seeing one’s own image in that oil and reciting a prayer. This prayer helps people suffering from trouble caused by Lord Saneeswaran, if they sing it regularly on Saturdays. Devotees perform special Pooja for Lord Saneeswaran so as to obtain his divine blessings for relief from the adverse effects of Saturn. The crow is considered to be the vahanam (celestial carrier) of Lord Saneeswaran) Shani, is one of the Navagraha, which are the nine primary celestial beings in Hindu astrology. Lord Saneeswaran is embodied in the planet of Saturn. Shani is the Lord of Saturday; the word Shani also denotes the seventh day or Saturday in most Indian languages. The origin of word Shani, means , the one who moves slowly, as Saturn takes about 30 years to revolve around the Sun. Lord Sani is also known as Shaneesvara, Saneesvaran, Shani Devam. Lord Saneeswaran, is the elder brother of Lord Yama, the Hindu God of Death, who in some scriptures corresponds to the deliverance of justice. Interestingly, Lord Surya’s two sons Lord Saneeswaran and Lord Yama are judges. Lord Saneeswaran gives us the results of one’s deeds through one’s life through appropriate punishments and rewards; Lord Yama grants the results of one’s deeds after death. It is said that when Lord Saneeswaran opened his eyes as a baby for the very first time, the sun went into an eclipse, which clearly denotes the impact of Sani on astrological charts.
