RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - Did you know that there are 35 miles of waterways in the Sacramento area? Waste that is dumped into creeks can destroy plants, pollute water, and endanger wildlife. Creek critters and plants need our help during the continued drought. Rancho Cordova is mobilizing to clean up its creeks on Saturday, April 9th from 9 to 11 a.m. Five creeks will be targeted for trash-pick up this year, and the city needs your help! Volunteer registration is now open. Sign up to volunteer by visiting www.creekweek.net/ vrancho. Hurry before all spots are filled! Rancho Cordova’s clean-up event is part of Creek Week, an annual event that is organized by the Sacramento Area Creeks Council. The clean-up on April 9th will be followed by a free barbecue lunch at Stone Creek Park, 3625 Spoto Drive in Rancho Cordova, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to thank all our community volunteers. “As a city, we want to protect the environment and maintain all of the beautiful outdoor areas in Rancho Cordova for generations to come,” said Mayor David Sander. “That’s why we’re proud to participate in Creek Week every year.” Interested in a nature walk? Join the City for a scientific tour at Bear Hollow Reservoir. Discover the native plant species and wildlife that can be found there. The tour will be led by a wetlands biologist. This is the perfect activity for nature lovers. Meet your tour guide in the parking lot at Stone Creek Park, 3625 Spoto Drive in Rancho Cordova, at 10:30 a.m. on April 9th. Then head over to the reservoir just across the street. For more information, contact Dana Grossi in the City’s Storm Water Quality Program at (916) 851-8897 or [email protected]. Receive $1,000 to Remove Your Fence and Help Beautify Your Neighborhood RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - Rancho Cordova has 600 single family homes with chain link fences in the front yard. In late January the City of Rancho Cordova launched a new Chain Link Fence Buy Back Program to facilitate the removal of these fences. Property owners can now receive up to $1,000 dollars to remove the fence and beautify the space. The program is funded by the Community Enhancement Fund (Measure H) that supports local priorities. Since the program launched 19 property owners have already applied for removal. The City’s first applicant, Jeanne Taise, had her fence removed by a group of volunteers on Saturday, Feb. 27th. Taise moved to Rancho Cordova six years ago to be closer to her place of work at Vision Service Plan (VSP). She has wanted to remove the chain link fence to improve the appearance of her home. Now, she has an incentive to do so and will receive $1,000 once the project is completed. When Rancho Cordova voters passed Measure H, a one-half cent sales tax measure, they partnered with the City to determine how the funding should be spent. One of the priorities identified was to beautify neighborhoods; the Chain Link Buy Back Program does just that. No Ordinary Café Angel Platters A Village Café Opens in Rancho Cordova By Annika Darling RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - Property owners can now receive up to $1,000 dollars to remove the fence and beautify the space. The program is funded by the Community Enhancement Fund (Measure H) that supports local priorities. The City’s first applicant, Jeanne Taise, had her fence removed by a group of volunteers on Saturday, Feb. 27th. Chain link fences reduce property values and create a perception of unsafe neighborhoods. More than 600 properties have chain link fences. Cities throughout the state have tried to create programs to address this concern, beautify their communities, and increase overall quality of life. Few of these programs have been successful…until now. Source: City of Rancho Cordova H The Broken One Good Friday Service On Saturday, Feb. 13th, Angel Platters, A Village Café—a breakfast and lunch café and event center—had their grand opening. The introduction of the community oriented restaurant was an all-day event—running from 6 a.m. to 7 pm that night. In attendance was not only crowds of supportive community members, but city officials, such as the mayor and former mayor. Chamber members were also present as well as family and friends of Angel Platters’ owners. Attendees cheered at the ceremonial ribbon cutting, and witnessed moving proclamations. In a post-press release of the event, the Café gave a special thanks to Kingdom Equipping Center, Dokimos Project, and Thrive Insurance. They also extended appreciation to their “amazing employees for putting in a very long day” adding that they are proud to be a part of the Rancho Cordova community. Angel Platters is a “giving back to the community” restaurant. One way they do this is by giving scholarships through the proceeds of events that they host at night time at their Event Center. The facility is available to rent seven nights a week from 4 p.m. to midnight. The Angel Platters owner, Janice Jordan, is surrounded by supporters as she cuts the ceremonial ribbon. Photo courtesy Angel Platters space can be rented for business meetings, meet-ups, weddings, fundraisers, and more. Another way the Angel Platters dedicates itself to serving the community is by hiring staff through nonprofit agencies and assists them in getting back into the work force. Janice Jordan is the owner of Angel Platters A Village Café. She received the vision of using a restaurant to help others. But she wanted more than just hiring people in need she also wanted to help businesses and nonprofits. This concept helps them all. Janice previously owned Jordan’s Referral Network. As a speaker, author, and trainer of marketing with a niche in networking she knows how much the community is in need of places for businesses and organizations to meet or have events, such as training and workshops. In the last few years she has worked with many nonprofits and felt they also need venues for their fund raisers. Not only is Angle Platters is giving back to the community one platter at a time, and they are doing it at affordable rates. They are known for their biscuits and gravy, and rumor has it they have the best burgers in town. Their meals are farm fresh and delicious, and prepared specially for each guest. Local Benefits Available for Our Vietnam Veterans There are many retired veterans in the Rancho Cordova area who decided to stay because of the people, weather, and facilities that are still available for them at Mather and McClellan. At Mather, the VA Hospital and its expanding facilities provide many services for retired veterans and active military personnel. The Mather Veterans Village will provide 100 permanent housing apartments for veterans. The second story of the former barracks, which is part of the Mather Veterans Village, will include 50 to 60 transitional beds. It will also include facilities that offer help getting more homeless veterans off the streets and educate them about what they are eligible for and what is available at Mather. I served four years of active duty and two in the reserve in the Air Force. I only recently found out that in the City of Sacramento at 2007 19th Street, (916) 874-6811, is a Sacramento County Veterans Services Office in which all veterans can bring their DD214 to that office and leave with a Veterans Identification Card. With that card, you will receive a thank you for your service in stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot where they take 10 percent off of any purchase, large or small. While you are at the Veterans Services Office, you can also pick up papers that list different stores, restaurants, and other facilities that show when, where, and what they offer to veterans. So as you can see, you don’t have to be a retired veteran to receive a thank you for your years of service to your country. Many of the veterans I am talking to, and about, don’t think of themselves as veterans because they didn’t fight in Vietnam and haven’t thought of their military past for quite a while. However, one of the facts of the Vietnam War isn’t known by many, and that is that veterans who served active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces from November 1st, 1955 to May 15th, 1975, regardless of location, are listed as Vietnam veterans, and are eligible to receive the Vietnam War Veterans lapel pin. At our City Council meeting on April 4th, we will be giving Vietnam War Veterans lapel pins out to veterans who served active duty during the Vietnam War period. We will place that information in the Grapevine Independent, online, and any other source of information so we can reach as many as possible with this new information. For those of you who fit in that time period, please contact Delisa at City Hall at (916) 851-8809 so we will know how many veterans to honor and give the lapel pin which says “Vietnam War Veteran.” Onward to other things, one of which is that there are more senior citizens who have to depend on public transportation to get around town. A good example would be some of our residents who live in apartments on Data Drive and other areas, and some who live in their homes, are extremely limited because they have no transportation. I talked to a resident of those apartments the other day and found out that if you have to walk to our new Folsom Lake College Campus at night, they won’t take the classes. Mather Field Road is very dark and threatening at night because there are no lights there, and they said that makes them feel even more uncomfortable so they don’t take classes at the new college campus at night. There should be street lights along Mather Field Road and the streets in many other neighborhoods. With no transportation, it is too far to walk and/or hard to fight the weather, so many can’t shop at our stores very often. I was told that Paratransit charges $10 for seniors and others who call, and when you are on a fixed income, it is too costly to go shopping whenever you want or sometimes even need. We need a small bus or a trolley whose cost would be set at a rate like the 50 cents charged on the Rancho Cordovan, which goes through the business area and Stone Creek, Sunridge, Anatolia, and Kavala Ranch neighborhoods. Those neighborhood’s residents pay something like $85 a year in addition to the 50 cents a ride, but I believe that there would be much more business for some of our retailers if there was an easier way to increase the number of senior citizens that shop around town. We also have new residents in our city who wouldn’t mind finding easier and less expensive transportation because they are just beginning their lives and their careers. Looking over this column reminds me that like many things in life, I have learned more by listening to others and trying to work what they say, ask, or suggest. Just listening to myself gets very repetitive because I just hear the same thing and that is very repetitive and... F ro m C o u n c i l m a n B o b McGarvey, God bless, and see you next time. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. Box 14 Carmichael, CA 95609 Janice Thomas came in the Mule Barn for breakfast the other day, and sat at the counter for the first time. She usually gets one of the tables, or a booth against the wall. We were kinda flattered that she’d come sit with us, but wondered why. After all, this high school art teacher never has been one to sit down and solve the world’s problems, the way we do. She didn’t keep us waiting long, though. “Boys,” she said, “I have a deer pointer.” She let the silence pounce heavily on our sweet rolls while we pondered this. “A what?” Doc said. “A deer pointer. You want deer, you just let ol’ Woof out and you’ll find ‘em.” “Woof, eh?” “Yes. He’s that new dog I got after that Lab of mine died. I’ve had Woof for about six months now. He’s half bird dog and half heeler and he points deer.” We looked at each other and grinned. When it comes to telling stories at this particular lunch counter, the first liar doesn’t stand a chance. “Points ‘em you say?” “Locks right up. Steady to wing and shot.” “This I have to see,” Dud said. So after coffee we all went out to Janice’s place while she turned this little dog out into the wood lot. He ran here and there and then froze into a perfect field-trial point. We walked up quietly and sure enough, there was a doe standing about 40 yards away. We’d never seen anything like it. “When I got him,” Janice explained, “he thought he’d herd deer, with that sheep dog blood he has in him. Well, the first time he tried that, some doe just kicked the puddin’ out of him. His tail didn’t work right for a week. “So now he’s switched over to the other half of his heritage and points ‘em. He’s found that works out a lot better for him.” She grinned. “And no … you can’t borrow him this fall.” Brought to you by A Cowboy’s Guide to Packing the Backyard Horse. Now a Kindle ebook. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. Box 14 Carmichael, CA 95609 City of Rancho Cordova Public Hearing Notice Community Development Block Grant 5-year Consolidated Plan The City of Rancho Cordova is preparing a five-year Consolidated Plan and providing opportunities for citizens to participate in the development of the document. The City invites interested residents and stakeholders to attend a public hearing work session of the City Council of the City of Rancho Cordova on Tuesday, March 29, 2016, starting at 5:30 p.m. or soon thereafter, at Rancho Cordova City Hall, in the American River North Room at 2729 Prospect Park Drive. The Consolidated Plan focuses primarily on the Community Development Block Grant program (CDBG), administered by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), but may provide further grant funding opportunities for additional HUD programs in the future. The Consolidated Plan will include a five-year strategic plan that identifies community development needs and strategies for effective, coordinated neighborhood and community development. The Consolidated Plan will set long-term goals for community revitalization by providing decent housing, a suitable living environment, and expanding economic opportunities, principally for low- and moderate-income persons. The City is also proposing a Neighborhood Revitalization Strategy Area (NRSA) as part of the Consolidated Planning process. The NRSA would allow the City to more efficiently use HUD funds, like CDBG, to effect targeted revitalization programs and projects. Furthermore, these benefits would include increased flexibility with regards to the use of CDBG funds for housing and economic development activities that revitalize a neighborhood. A map of the proposed NRSA can be viewed by accessing the link provided below. At the public hearing, the City Council will review the first draft of the Consolidated Plan and discuss the NRSA. The public comment period for the Consolidated Plan and NRSA begins on April 1, 2016 and ends May 2, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. On May 2, 2016, the City Council will review the final draft of the Consolidated Plan. Upon approval, the final draft will be finalized and submitted to HUD for review. The City must submit a completed Consolidated Plan to HUD no later than May 15, 2016. Public comments regarding the Consolidated Plan are always welcomed. Citizens wishing to address the Council on any matter pertaining to the Consolidated Plan are encouraged to attend the public hearing. Not only does the Rancho Cordova Chamber of Commerce recognize the business community for their many successes but they do so in an incredibly festive fashion, serving up a Hawaiian BBQ and Hawaiian themed cocktails, offering raffles and a silent auction, and filling the night with fitting and talented entertainment. This year, the Chamber offered entry to the extravagant event for silent auction items: sports and adventuress tickets, quilts and blankets, art, crafts, and jewelry, wine and beer, and picnic and movie night gift baskets were among the raffle and silent auction items…just to name a few. Making the room the most popular place to be pre-event was American River Brewing Company, where founder David Mathis set up a booth offering two different tasty brews to event goers. The Firebreak Ale was a big hit and the bigger the hit the greater amount goes to charity, for this is the Brewery’s charity beer and every pint sold a percentage 2015 Chairman’s Award Mather Golf Course Ambassador of the Year Kimanh Davis, World Financial Group 2015 Best in Business ~ Rising Star Rancho Cordova Training Center 2015 Best in Business ~ Large Business SMUD 2015 Best in Business ~ Medium Business Grocery Outlet 2015 Best in Business ~ Small Business Quick Quack Car Wash Tersesa Arteaga, Sales Director at dealsnapt, won the big prize of the night when her key fit the lock. The packed event took place on Thursday, March 3rd. The doors opened at 5:30 p.m. and, while the awards and entertainment ended by 9 p.m., many stayed to enjoy the atmosphere long after, making Friday morning’s “business as usual” a challenge, to be sure. The Sunrise Event Center, located at 11167 Trade Center Drive in the heart of Rancho Cordova, offered the perfect setting for such an elaborate event. The large entry way gave the beautiful women in grass skirts on either side of the doorway room enough to adorn each arriver with either a green leafy leis or a bright colorful one. The large room, set off to the right, offered room enough to display the abundant of the sale goes to The Firefighters Burn Institute. The other beer the Brewery brought to the event is no stranger to the Rancho Cordova community: the River Bend Hefeweizen, originally brewed for the Chamber’s 15th Anniversary and has non-officially become “The Beer of Rancho Cordova.” For non-beer drinkers, other stations serving wine and festive libations were propped up in opposite corners. A small hors-d’oeuvre table kept guests satisfied as the perused the auction items and sipped on tasty delights, or even got their face painted with festive designs. The main section of the Event Center was arranged with numerous tables, leaving a large aisle for entertainers and award winners to file down. The stage area gave the event’s emcee, Todd Lute, a perfect perch to welcome awardees and to crack dozens of sly (and not so sly) jokes—certainly adding charm and laughter throughout the night. The night was filled with awards, smiles and pictures and broken up with a variety of numbers from talented entertainers. Makamae Melia O’ Polynesia was the group that entertained the quests that evening, and what a good job they did. The name translates to “Treasured The night was filled with awards, smiles, and pictures, and was broken up with a variety of numbers from talented entertainers. Photo by Shelly Blanchard Plumerias of Polynesia.” The dancers were versed in many styles of Polynesian dance: including dances of Hawaii, Tahiti, and Maori. One dancer lit up the stage, literally, bringing excitement into the show by lighting his dance props on fire. Overall the night was a huge success, and the Chamber celebrated 53 years of service to the community and proved how dedicated they are to the prosperity and success of the businesses in the community. Last season, Cordova, along only to find out that the Kings had built a good lead and blew it all in the fourth quarter, further stabilizing their usual standing somewhere around a No.-7 pick in the next draft --- a seemingly incurable affliction. Lately, the NBA has developed a new technique for treating the patience of its fans that is totally lacking in human kindness. While the ever-rising costs of anything fan-related (tickets, TV subscriptions, merchandise and everything else) is making it more difficult to thrive as an ardent follower of the league, the patrons that pay the high, premium prices to attend games are at risk of having to endure the absence of some of the top stars in the game because they are “resting, comfortably.” As the baseball season is on the horizon, a couple of sore spots have appeared. MLB has withdrawn the two-game suspension for Dodgers’ infielder Chase Utley, originally imposed as a result of his dangerous slide in the NL Division Series that broke the leg of Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada. Almost everybody thinks it was a dirty play by Utley…a notion supported by the understanding that it was the obvious impetus for the new slide rules going into effect. San Francisco fans are suffering through psychological damage resulting from thoughts of never seeing their beloved two-time Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum in a Giants uniform ever again. It will be tough to swallow if he makes it all the way back from injury to resume his career in a Padres, Mariners or Dodgers uni. Every season about this time college basketball inflicts us all with its recurring virus that is the conference tournaments that send their champions directly into the NCAA Tournament, regardless of what happened for months through the course of the regular schedule. A lowerseeded team can get on a sudden hot streak and pull off a couple of upsets in a couple of days and advance, while the top conference squads that have proven their worth throughout the year can have one bad game and get knocked out….enough to make them ill. And then there is the retiring Peyton Manning; are you a fan or are you sick of him? It was sure swell of him to give us all his blessing during his retirement speech Monday, as he hung up his cleats after 18 seasons in the NFL that concluded with a victory for his Denver Broncos in the last Super Bowl. Manning seems to be one of those superstars that makes it hard to completely buy into his overall act. The beer-drinking, pizza lover always seems so professional, yet annoyingly calculating at the same time. He can be just a good ol’ boy, or relatively amusing on his Saturday Night Live appearances. Who knows what will ever become of those controversial times back in college at Tennessee or the performance-enhancing drugs questions? But there is no denying that, on the field, he was among the top quarterbacks of all time, love him of hate him. He was a master technician. “No one could out-prepare me,” he said in his manicured speech. “Every moment….. was about reverence for this game.” He reverently guzzled a Gatorade on camera prior to Super Bowl 50. After the victory he planted a reverent kiss on Papa John, and placed an order for a large combination to go with those Budweisers he said he was going to knock down after the game. Being involved in sports is like being in school. Blended with all of the good things going on there are a wide range of sicknesses that might grab hold of you. You are always exposed, but hopefully you will build up your immunities to the prevailing diseases and they won’t bring you down.
