DAY 2 – Budapest Time Travel
Breakfast at the hotel
09:30 Time-travel sightseeing tour
Duration: approx. 6 hours (including lunch)
Your guide will take you through distance and time, exploring the ageless beauty of Budapest with a special
emphasis on architecture and music. This tour invites you to participate in a time travel, where over 1600
years can be covered in 4 hours!
What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear: Budapest? The Danube flowing between
Pest and Buda? The well-reputed baths? Or the iconic Parliament building? Your first tour portrays the
most apparent associations and augment them with the city’s multifaceted past – and present. The current
territory of Budapest has been continuously inhabited since the era of the Roman Empire. Remnants of
past centuries are woven into the complex fabric of the contemporary urban landscape.
The tour starts at the ruins of the former fortress of the Roman Empire. We search then for the traces of
the medieval city gate. We spot some surprising details and we’ll learn about fascinating anecdotes as we
travel through the time marked by monumental buildings and hidden gems. This city-tour also features
some interactive elements.
13:30 Lunch at the Two Saracens Bistro
In a traditional sense, the place is a coffeehouse where you can drop by in the morning, at noon or late at
night. Where, in addition to excellent coffee, you can always find warm hospitality and delicious meals.
The Two Saracens Bistro’s cuisine blends simplicity with sophistication and classical with contemporary.
Included: coffee stop, some surprise elements, 3 course gluten-free lunch with soft drinks (menu based
on seasonal ingredients will be sent 2 weeks before the program starts)

16:00 Hungarian State Opera
Duration: 1 hour
The opera house in Budapest stands as one of the most beautiful Neo-Renaissance buildings in Europe.
When it was opened in 1884, the city shared the administrative duties of the Austro-Hungarian Empire
with Vienna. In fact, Emperor Franz Joseph commissioned its design. Construction included the use of
marble and frescos by some of the best artisans of that era.
The auditorium seats 1200 people and - according to the measures of a group of acclaimed international
engineers - has the third best acoustics amongst similar European venues (after the Scala in Milan and the
Paris Opera House).
Included: entrance fee and scheduled guided tour in the building
private tour is available for groups of 10 or more
19:30 Go Local surprise dinner
Duration: 2-3 hours
Go Local dinners are new and trendy eating out concepts, an alternative to traditional restaurants.
High-end menu with carefully paired dishes and wines is served at an out-of-the-box venue.
Smaller groups with 2-6 guests are hosted at a private rooftop kitchen.
Groups over 6 participants enjoy a private after-hours dinner in a wine gallery
In both venues gluten-free menus are served, made with fresh, local ingredients.
Included: 3-4 course menu with wine selection, soft drinks and coffee (menu based on seasonal
ingredients will be sent 2 weeks before the program starts)

DAY 3 – Conquer the Royal Palace!
Breakfast at the hotel
09:30 Conquer the Caste district
Duration: 3-4 hours
The Castle District with the Royal Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are vivid and striking landmarks of
Budapest. By strolling along the seven bastions (representing the seven tribes who founded Hungary) you
will be awarded with the most stunning panorama of the Pest side of the city.
The first royal residence on Castle Hill was built in the 13th century, after the Mongolian invasion. It was
extended in the 14th century, becoming probably the largest Gothic palace of the late Middle Ages.
Subsequent destructions and rebuilding shaped the district during war and peace time. Cobble stone
streets, fortified walls, pompous palaces, the coronation church and the Fisherman Bastions reveal
fascinating stories of life and death throughout long forgotten centuries.
For art lovers the Highlights of Art add-on tour at the Hungarian National Gallery is recommended. Please
refer to Exhibit A.
13:00 Lunch will be served among the ancient walls of the Buda Castle. The “Pest-Buda” is one of the
oldest restaurants in Hungary. The building was originally built as an inn and had been used as such until
1800. Nowadays the restaurant offers a selection of Hungarian classics as well as gluten-free options.
Included: entrance tickets to the St Matthias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion, a coffee stop, 3 course lunch
with soft drinks (menu based on seasonal ingredients will be sent 2 weeks before the program starts)

15:00 Go Local Afternoon Tours
Duration: 3-3,5 hours
By this time, you are familiar with the apparent must-see places of Budapest and now it’s time go beyond
the obvious. You can choose one from the three themed tours:



A – Budapest Art Pulse Tours
B – Architecture & History
C – Classic & New-wave coffee culture in Budapest
A – Budapest Art Pulse Tour
We can assert that contemporary Hungarian design and visual culture are rightfully acclaimed all
over the world. This city discovery walking tour will let you in to hidden places as well as visiting top
Hungarian designer's workshops. The tour presents both the classical and the contemporary art
scene of Budapest. We begin by strolling along the Falk Miksa street, dotted with numerous antique
shops. Classic Hungarian paintings, restoration workshops, antique furniture and reminiscences of
the socialist era. You can find them all here!
We then continue to the more easy-going quarters of the city involving many innovative galleries
and studios. During the walk we can spot colorful street-art paintings, tricky land-art installations
and also learn about their stories.
B – Architecture & History
The history of once separate two little towns, Buda and Pest, began in the 2nd century BC.
Wandering through the streets filled with amazing variety of architectural mementos, we can
encounter all the concealed traces of a turbulent history. Built on the foundation of the time-travel
sightseeing tour on day 2, this itinerary focuses on the heritage of the so called ‘Golden Ages’
spanning from the mid of 19th century to World War I that determined the landscape of the city
we admire today.
You’ll discover the stories and secrets behind some of Budapest’s famous architectural
monuments, find out what UNESCO declared as part of the World Heritage, walk through the
narrow passageways of Pest and visit some hidden corners with our expert in architecture!
C – Classic & New-wave coffee culture in Budapest
Hungarians acquired two things during the 150 years of Turkish occupation: love for baths and
coffee. The Ottoman influence gave birth to a coffee culture comparable that of Paris and Vienna.
Let’s follow the path of the coffee all the way from the bean to your cup! Enjoy a “fekete” (classic
espresso) at a table of a 130-year-old stylish coffeehouse and savor a sip of flat white at a trendy
new-wave coffee bar. The tour leads you through the downtown of Budapest, where you can also
learn more about the passageways and the great boulevards where the century-old tradition of
coffee houses emerges rejuvenated in a great variety.
Included in the themed tours: coffee stop, entrance fees
Dinner is optional tonight. Please see the Add-on dinner options in Exhibit B

DAY 4 – Heritage with a local touch!
Breakfast at the hotel (Only a very small portion is recommended!)*
10:30 Taste around Budapest
Duration: 4 hours
*Please refrain from having any meals beyond your minimal
survival needs this morning. You want to taste as much of the
Hungarian specialties as possible and this tour includes a
variety of food.
New restaurants, cafés, street food parlors, bakeries and
pastry shops pop up on a daily basis in Budapest. The city is
filled with gastronomy lovers and passionate gastronomists.
Without a doubt, the best way to experience and learn a new
culture is by eating your way through it. Let’s do it!
We’ll start the tour at the Great Market Hall. For appetizer
we’ll taste typical Hungarian cold cuts and cheese and for the
main course we’ll have a grilled sausage at the ‘Hentes’
(butcher) or a big portion of Stuffed cabbage. You can sample
“Unicum” or “Pálinka” in a famous ruin bar, wash it down with
a ‘fröccs’ (wine spritzer) or craft beer and finish the day with a
classic cake (gluten-free of course!) in a lovely classic café. We
might also stop by at artisan chocolate or new-wave café
shops.
Besides all the tastings, your guide will take you from one exciting spot of the city to another, making sure
that the your gastro quest also serves as a special sightseeing tour.
Included: cost of all mentioned food and drinks
14:00 Parliament tour
Duration: 50 minutes
The building of Hungary's legislature - the House of Parliament - is rightfully listed among the most
stunning and beautiful of its kind. When the building was erected, the borders of Hungary stretched from
Transylvania to the Adriatic Sea which makes it less surprising that a nation of roughly ten million possesses
the 3rd largest parliament building in the world. The edifice is the home to the Hungarian Holy Crown and
a workplace for the 199 Members of Parliament and nearly 600 support personnel.
Included: entrance fees and scheduled guided tour in the Parliament building

15:00 Art-nouveau tour with coffee stop
Duration: 2,5-3 hours
No matter what genre the Art Nouveau manifested in, it persistently rejected academic art and historicism.
In fine art and applied arts, a high degree of stylization took over. Surfaces and structures are richly dressed
with undulating floral or geometric decoration.
During our walk we’ll look beyond architecture and seek for vivid colors, intense emotions and organic
design in Art Nouveau paintings, furniture and interior design. We’ll search for Art Nouveau wonders and
learn about the history of those masterpieces. We’ll also gain insight into the coffee house culture of the
symbolist poets and the enchanting world of cabaret and burlesque of the turn of the century.
Included: coffee stop, entrance ticket to the House of Hungarian Art-nouveau

atmosphere, never heard urban legends and cute hidden places that even locals are not aware of.

The 17th century little town with narrow winding streets is situated on the Danube bank and can
be reached in 40 minutes by car or in 90 minutes by boat. The old-town where everything is within

Upgrade 1 – Etyek vineyard
Location: Etyek, Hungary
Duration: 6-7 hours
Countless wine cellars carved into limestone and their passionate owners will surely provide a
captivating experiences even for those who don’t consider themselves a wine-lover.
Etyek is located 19 miles from the capital, amid rolling hills. This area is famous for its terroir. The
vineyards are on wind swept plateaus graced by sunny hillsides whose basis is limestone layered
over brown forest soils. The natural endowment of the Etyek region is similar to Champagne,
France. This once flourishing and then forgotten wine producing region have been experiencing a
revival. There are 120 operating small wineries in the region and many more are coming back from
decades of dormant state.
Upon arrival viticulturist Szilard Nadas welcomes us at his charming and authentic winery. After
the 3 variety wine tasting our cool chauffeur will drive us up to the ‘Etyek-M kitchen’ in a horsecarriage. Máté (Mathew) and his dearest wife will host us for lunch. In order to guarantee a breathtaking closing of the program, coffee and dessert will be served at the ‘Etyeki Kuria’ winery blessed
with the best panorama of the region.
The tour incorporates 3 different wine cellars in Etyek. Every cellar introduces high quality local
drinks while ‘Etyek-M’ will be our host for the meals.

Upgrade 2 – Lake Balaton, a picturesque culinary trip to the Hungarian Sea
Location: Lake Balaton, Hungary
Duration: 7-8 hours
The Balaton, a 50-mile long lake with silky green-yellow water in the center of western Hungary,
is fondly called by the locals as the “Hungarian Sea”. It’s the largest lake in Central Europe.
Picturesque vineyards stretches over the slopes of the Balaton highland which follows the
northern shore of the lake. The region produces an assortment of excellent wines that pair very
well with the delicious local food.

Go Local, Go Gluten Free in Budapest itinerary
page 11
We begin our Balaton exploration at the Jásdi Wine Terrace where we’ll be presented with tastings
and a beautiful panorama of the lake. The wine cellar was built in the mid-1800s. The Jásdis
acquired the property when the head of the family decided to sell his venture and dedicate all of
his time and passion to wine making.
The wine tasting is followed by a tour of Balatonfüred, a must stop along the lake shore.
The town was developed during the 18th century and became known for its unique micro climate
created by the surrounding Balaton Highlands. The relaxing atmosphere of the lake coupled with
its unique climate and local mineral springs turned out to be highly beneficial for people with heart
conditions. Around the turn of the 18th century a world renowned heart sanitarium was
established here with a large public park. The adjacent shore promenade was named after
Rabindranath Tagore, the famous Nobel-prize winning Hindu poet who was healed here. The
romantic lakeshore walk leads to a row of sailboat marinas, lively ice-cream parlors, restaurants
and kiosks.
For lunch we leave Balatonfüred and follow the vineyard covered hills all the way to the top, both
in geographical and gastronomical terms. At the ‘Márga Bistro’ you’ll find your attention jumping
back and forth between the culinary delights and the stunning views of the vinery and the lake.
After lunch we head towards Tihany. The iconic building on the highest point of the peninsula, the
Benedictine Abbey has been the cultural center of the area for centuries and it is one of the most
visited sites today. The Tihany tour is our farewell to the lake before we head back to Budapest.

DAY 7 – Do as the locals do!
Breakfast at the hotel
9:30
Bathing program à la Hungarian
Duration: 5-6 hours (incl. picnic)
Your Budapest exploration is slowly coming to an end and there is no better way to treat yourself than to
rejuvenate your body and soul by dipping into one of the famous historic baths of the city. Just as locals
(and many curious visitors) do. Visiting a bath is a form of social activity in this region.
The ‘Széchenyi Thermal Bath’ is one of the largest traditional bath/spa complexes in Europe. It owes its
existence to a mining engineer who was experimenting deep drilling (a technological challenge in the mid1800s) in the City Park and found a precious hot mineral water reservoir. In 1881 an "Artesian bath" was
already in operation here. The initial wooden buildings couldn’t keep up with a growing demand, so a
brand new permanent structure, the ‘Széchenyi Thermal Bath’ was built in 1913. The Bath was gradually
expanded and reached its current size in 1960.
Nothing says it better about the popularity of this place than the warning message which was posted on
the bath’s website: “We would like to warn our guests that fake vouchers to Széchenyi Thermal Baths are
traded, especially at places frequented by tourists.” You’ll experience by yourself why the bathing culture
become a way of life in Central-Eastern European region.
13:00 Picnic in the City Park!
The Széchenyi Bath was built in the middle of the Városliget (City Park) the second largest green area of
the capital. The park offers a huge variety of leisure activities (zoo, museums, bath, ice rink or rowing pond:
all built at the turn of the century) and has always been a popular place for picnicking by the locals. After
the visit to the Széchenyi Bath, let’s settle on the grass and together enjoy some local gluten-free
delicacies!
Included: entrance ticket with cabin use to the Széchenyi Baths, gluten free picnic lunch in the City Park
(menu based on seasonal ingredients will be sent 2 weeks before the program starts)
The afternoon is free. You can choose from the add-on programs listed in Exhibit A

Hungary was known as the most cheerful among
the countries occupied by Russia during the
communist era, hence the nickname “the
happiest barrack” was given. The tour visits the
unique ‘Memento Park’ which conserved 40
statues of a past that was far from being happy
in real life. The park is a memento not only of the
communist times but a memento of all
oppressive regimes which abuses art for
supporting its own political ideology. We then
return to the center of Budapest to discover
other remnants of the communist regime, which are still situated in their original place – and typically can
be found in their original condition.
You will also find the answer to questions like: Why the Hungarian system was called Goulash Communism?
Why only the boots of Stalin’s statue are displayed in the Memento Park? What is the reason for preserving
Communist monuments? You’ll find this out along with other enigmas of the past.

Dinner on board – vintage gourmet cruising
Duration: 2,5-3 hours
“Guests sat down on the leather seats on the lower
deck. The freshly varnished wood paneling and the
subdued light conjured the atmosphere of true
elegance. Women were wearing hoop skirts and
head-gears while the men put on silk hats and
tuxedos. The champagne was beading in crystal
glasses. The ropes were lifted, the captain pulled the
horn and steam flew into the sky… “
The kitchen of the “Pannonia” vintage cruise ship is
supervised by master chef László Ruprecht who puts
traditional food into a modern context.
While the ship is elegantly slipping through the ripples
of the Danube amid the majestic monuments of the
capital, the culinary journey on board extends beyond
the border of the city. This vintage gastro ship
presents the creations of the best chefs from all over
the country. They bring the specialties of their region to your table, so you can savor the taste of the
provinces while enjoying the undisturbed beauty of one of Europe’s most spectacular urban scenery.

Links at kisSSBende – 2 women, 20 chairs, endless passion
Duration: 2,5-3 hours
Two young ladies, a PhD graduate in
international law and an economist, met during a
culinary class in 2013. It turned out that they not
only shared a passion for food but also shared a
passion for the countryside, for the conversations
with the farmers, for tradition, for music and for
making a difference. Hence, the idea of the
kiSSBende Bistro - which bears their last names
Kiss and Bende - was born.
During an intense, two-year long journey around
the country they handpicked animal breeders,
farmers, vegetable gardeners, fruit producers, viticulturists who adhere to the traditions of their profession
and provide the purest, most authentic raw material for kiSSBende’s kitchen. As personal as a farm to table
concept can be. The place that Eva and Zsofi created is just as much about sharing the philosophy of two
young talented, ambitious and passionate professionals as it is about the fine food they serve.
The experience you’ll have in this twenty seat bistro is best described by the notion of “links”. Links
between the countryside and the city, between farmers and the people who consume their products. Links
between music and food, between traditional and contemporary and links between hosts and guests.
While you can savor the most authentic local gourmet flavors of the country, Zsofi and Eva will be happy
to share the stories behind them.
Included: 3-4 course menu with wine selection, soft drinks and coffee
