As you read this Annual Report, we hope you have the same sense of pride in being part of the PBDA community that we do.
The 2013-2014 school year was one of great accomplishments on behalf of our students, teachers, parents, and community volunteers.
A few highlights from this year include:
• Our graduates, as always, will be attending the secondary schools of their choice both locally and at the top New England Boarding
Schools. A few examples of last year’s acceptances include Deerfield (5), Exeter (3), Hotchkiss (2), Oxbridge (21), Benjamin (9), Saint
Andrew’s (7), Cardinal Newman (3).
• Sixty-five new students joined us at PBDA from New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Georgia, Texas, Missouri, Mississippi, Spain,
China, Chile, France, and Czech Republic.
• We had the grand opening of our newly renovated Matthews Center for Performing Arts and Smith Family Theater.
• Our Annual Fund increased to $894,000 with a 100% participation rate from our parents and a 100% participation rate from faculty,
staff, and the Board of Trustees. We are one of a few schools in the country to do this.
• Our Walter H. Butler Golf Classic was highly successful making $69,000 for the school and adding a Friday night Ocean-Side Bash.
• On the Upper Campus, 50% of our students qualified for the Duke Tip Program for Gifted Students with 8 qualifying for State
Recognition.
• 55% percent of our 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade students qualified for the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth.
• 30 of our students were inducted into the National Honor Society.
• Our Math Counts Team placed 2nd in the Ciphering round and two of our students placed 7th and 9th in the County.
• Barbara Close, our Math Department Chairman on the Upper Campus, was awarded the Dwyer Award for Teaching Excellence, the
highest teaching honor in Palm Beach County.
• We had a strong year in sports with the girls placing second in the league in basketball and soccer and third in volleyball and
lacrosse. The boys won the League Championship in flag football, second in soccer and lacrosse and third in basketball.
• Five of our students qualified to participate in the Florida State Chorus and 10 of our vocal students qualified to perform in the
Spotlight on Young Musicians at the Kravis Center for Performing Arts.
• Our School was granted the Green School of Excellence Award for the fifth year in a row and the Lower Campus was certified as a
Nature Explore Classroom.
• Our Museum Partnerships with the Flagler Museum, the Norton Museum of Art, the Ann Norton Sculpture Garden, the Morikami
Museum and Japanese Gardens, Mounts Botanical Gardens, Food for the Poor and the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County
History Museum were enhanced and the Norton Museum featured our students’ work in a special exhibit.
• Numerous faculty members presented at the State, National, and International Level and published articles in various national
magazines and authored books.
•Traditions and Change in Paradise: The Story of Palm Beach Day Academy, written by Hilary Mendoza and Barbara Close, was published.
•Lego Robotics was introduced to the 6th graders with plans to extend it in 2014-2015.
•Eleven of our teachers completed their Masters with FAU thanks to the generosity of James and Sue Patterson.
• Work on the Lower Campus has been completed in preparation for our new Early Childhood Education Center and Center for
Athletics and Arts.
• Our newly formed Alumni Committee brought back the Pet Show, a long-standing PBDA tradition.
•The Florida Thinking Maps Conference brought approximately 200 teachers to the Lower Campus.
•Our Upper Campus students performed Bye Bye Birdie for the annual musical and our Lower Campus students performed Pinnochio.
•We had our first New York City alumni gathering at Celerie Kemble Curry’s home and approximately 70 alumni from the tri-state
area attended.
All of this has been focused on providing our students with the best possible preparation for the future and a school experience that
they remember with great pride. Our graduates are heading off secure in the knowledge that they have completed a very challenging
academic program and are well prepared.
We are proud to be part of Palm Beach Day Academy and thank you for the many ways in which you as parents contribute to
everything we’re able to do for our students. We couldn’t do it without the many volunteer hours that you bring to us.

haritable giving allows Palm Beach Day Academy to continue to
provide quality programs and teachers, maintain facilities and grounds,
obtain new technology, and supplement our enrichment programs.
Philanthropic gifts also provide financial assistance to qualified students.
Our fundraising success cannot be accomplished without the strong leadership
of parent volunteers. In this report, you will find our audited figures for the
2013-14 school year.
Annual Fund
Under the leadership of Gita Costa and Lourdes Fanjul, contributions
were received from trustees, current parents, alumni, parents of alumni,
grandparents, foundations, administrators, teachers, staff, and friends. We were
proud to announce that a record 100% of our parents and faculty supported the
fund.
Fundraising Events
The 18th Annual Walter H. Butler Golf Classic, chaired by Matthew Smith
and Joel Kassewitz, raised $69,000 net of expenses. Major sponsors included
Shoes For Crews, Joel and Darcie Kassewitz, Credit Suisse Securities, Sterling
Organization, Rochelle and Craig Menin, First Republic Bank, The Breakers
Palm Beach, SCS Financial, Austin and Steve Smith, The Atwood Group –
Merrill Lynch, Brooks and Allison Bishop, the Hallowell Family, and Strong
Boalt. Participating in the tournament were parents, alumni, students, teachers,
trustees, parents of alumni, and friends.
The Feather Ball Dinner and Auction, chaired by Christine Beall, Franchesca
McGann, Michelle Miller and Austin Smith, brought our school families
and friends together for an evening of dining and dancing. The event netted
$518,000, of which $134,000 was raised from Corporate Sponsorships.
Leadership Gifts / Financial Aid
The William H. Pitt Foundation is strongly committed to supporting the school’s
financial aid program. Ms. Pauline Pitt, Director and Chairman of the Grants
Committee, and Mr. Robert Simses, President of the Pitt Foundation, continue to
recognize the need to provide qualified students and families access to a PBDA
education. Through generous support from the William H. Pitt Foundation,
Matthew and Tracy Smith Foundation, The Raymond John Wean Foundation,
and many others, the school was able meet the needs of families who, otherwise,
would not have had the opportunity to attend PBDA.
Auxiliary Programs
These programs include fees for services such as the lunch and bus programs, as
well for after school enrichment, aftercare, book fair, yearbook and field trips.
As we plan for the coming months and into the future we must rely on financial
stability, good financial management, a strong enrollment, a dedicated Board
of Trustees, and a high level of financial giving on the part of those associated
with the school. We thank everyone for continuing to support Palm Beach Day
Academy.
