Allie G” or “K-Man.” I met him while in Suriname for the BGM.
Again, I offer congratulations to Sheldon and his outstanding staff
for a most excellent meeting. Reflecting back on the theme “Overcoming the Challenges in a Changing
Health Environment,” I thought about of all the centuries of evolution, “Allie G” is one of the few
creatures that have not changed or evolved. All other creatures and organizations have changed or
evolved to maintain or sustain life in an ever changing world or society. Since my first CASMET meeting
until the last, I have watched CASMET make changes in leadership and direction. CASMET has made
changes that make it the directing and leading healthcare organization of the region. CASMET will need
change and make changes to make a difference in the region. Combining CASMET collective strengths,
by joining forces with all the branches and territories, will make the Caribbean and CASMET a
predominant force in the healthcare industry. The strategic planning sessions presented by Wendy and
Valerie was an excellent start for planning changes. To develop a mission statement and a vision will give
CASMET guidance and direction for the futures.
I look forward to working with the new Regional Council. I also look forward to seeing some, if not all, of
you in Memphis, Tennessee in July 2016 for the AMT National Meeting.
Regards and blessing
Chris

An oasis of beauty in the midst of paradise:
A first timers report to an AMT Convention
Hawaii, I mean really! Hawaii?
Those were quite literally my first words after finding out about the Annual AMT
convention was going to be held there. It was definitely a mix of apprehension,
excitement, and more than anything, curiosity that stayed with me all throughout the
lead up to that event.
Mr. Oseye Andrews
Council Member
Trinidad & Tobago
Branch
At the airport that morning right before we left Trinidad and Tobago, it once more
clearly ran through my mind; we are going to a HUGE convention and we are traveling
further than I personally have ever travelled before. Thoughts that can be daunting on
their own, but together made me note the excited prickly feeling that was overtaking
my being.
Circling Kona gave rise to a simple euphoria that I couldn’t honestly detail even if I made an attempt, with that long
drive to the conference hotel doing nothing less than filing my eyes with the combined beauty and thirst for
experiences on the island. But, I was there, and I could leisurely discover what this island had in store.
I sometimes still try to narrow down exactly what I enjoyed the most about my first conference with AMT. When I just
arrived I thought the island would have more interest than the actual event, but from the opening ceremony with our
guest speakers, and that one singing cowboy, I had the feeling the entire experience would be a delight.
Education was the focus, and I have to say, it was done terrifically. I sat in lectures and forgot where I was in that hour.
No-longer was I listening to some old lecture in HAWAII, I was instead learning of emerging new and absorbing
cytology techniques and all else forgotten, or transported into a haematology history lesson that won’t be forgotten.
Only when a session ended, did I remember where I was, and even so, my focus was to get to the next land of learning,
that had been prepared for us all.
Now I won’t say the island had lost its appeal to me, which would be absurd! I could however say when placed side by
side, the natural beauty and culture of Hawaii had strong competition from the quality of the conference. They worked
to enhance each other and made me appreciate both more.
I was saddened when the week had ended, really, I’m telling you I was!
For my first experience with AMT it was stellar, it may just have been monolithic. I really loved the entire experience
from beginning to end, and in 2016 it’s in Memphis Tennessee so guess where I’ll be then. Yep, AMT has made an avid
supporter out of me, come along and see for yourself too.

Diwali is a festival of joy and prosperity, and a celebration of the
victory of good over evil. This is the story of Ram and Ravan. A story
related to this auspicious festival.
Thousands of years ago in the city of Ayodhya, there was a wise and
good king named Dasaratha who ruled along with his three queens
and four princes. The eldest, Ram and his beautiful wife, Sita, lived
happily along with his other prince brothers and their wives. But
one of king Dasaratha’s wives was jealous of Ram and demanded
that he be exiled to the forest for 14 years so that her son, Bharat,
be made king.
Having once promised his wife to fulfil any wish of hers, the

(Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrughna)
helpless king exiled Ram to the forest. And so, Ram set off on foot
accompanied by his loving wife Sita, not forgetting his younger
brother Lakshman.
A few years into their exile, a demoness named Surpanakha saw Ram and fell for his looks. She asked
Ram to marry her. Ram refused and asked her to go to Lakshman instead. But Lakshman also refused.
Enraged, Surpanakha showed her true form and Lakshman cut off her noses and ears. The demoness
went wailing to her brother who was none other than Ravan, the demon King of Lanka. Ravan was
furious and swore revenge.
With the help of another demon who took the form of a golden deer, he distracted Ram and Lakshman
and kidnapped Sita from their hut. When Ram and Lakshman returned, Sita was missing, they realized
that something bad had happened while they were gone and immediately rushed to find her.
On their way, they came across an army of monkeys and bears that agreed to help them. Among them
was a monkey named Hanuman who had once vowed to be at Ram’s service. Now Hanuman was no
ordinary monkey. He could fly over mountains, change size at will and had super-human strength. He
had the power to leap across oceans in a single stride. So obviously, he ended up being Ram’s strongest
ally.
It was Hanuman who finally found Sita, imprisoned in one of Ravan’s beautiful gardens. Hanuman
reassured Sita that Ram would be here soon to rescue her.
Vol 2 Issue 6
Page 22
He came back to Ram with Sita’s whereabouts and the army of monkeys, bears and men marched to
Lanka. Soon a great battled started between the two mighty armies and Ram’s soldiers managed to kill
all the demons, except one-Ravan.
The battle was now between Ram and Ravan. He gave Ravan one last chance to apologize and return
Sita. Ravan instead rained down weapons on him. Ram too, fought back relentlessly but despite all his
efforts, nothing seemed to kill Ravan.
Finally, Ravan’s brother Vibheeshan told Ram that Ravan’s weakest point was his navel. Using an arrow
given to him by the gods, Ram shot Ravan in the naval and killed him instantly. And so, Ram and his love
Sita were finally reunited.
Soon after, upon completion of their 14 years in exile, Ram, Sita and Lakshman returned home to find
the entire city waiting for them. The street was decorated with flowers and lamps and there was
happiness everywhere.
This is why every year on Diwali Day you see the streets, homes and offices lit up with lamps, like the city
of Ayodhya, in celebration of Ram and Sita’s homecoming.

The Five days of diwali.
Diwali, deewali or deepavali is celebrated by the Hindu community each year. It is an auspicious festival of joy,
splendor and happiness. It is a festival which commemorates the victory of light over darkness, good over evil. The
uniqueness of diwali is its harmony of five varied philosophies with each day is celebrated in a very special way.
The first day of Diwali: Dhanteras
The first day of diwali is called Dhanvantari Triodasi of Dhan Theras. It is in fact the thirteenth lunar day of
Krishna Paksh. On this day, Lord Dhanwantari came out of the ocean with Ayurvedic or life knowledge for
mankind. Hindus everywhere bathe and offer a lighted deeya with sweets such as Parsad to Yama Raj, the
Lord of Death and they pray for protection from untimely death. The offering is usually made near a Tulsi
tree, or any other sacred tree.
The second day of Diwali: Choti Diwali
The second day of diwali is known as Narak Chaturdasi. On this day Lord Krishna destroyed the demon
Narakasur and the world became free from fear. Hindus normally celebrate this day be massaging their
bodies with oil to relieve it of tiredness, bathe and rest so that they can celebrate Diwali with vigour and
devotion.
On this night the Yama Deeya should not be lit. The Laws of Dharma declares that the Yama Deeya should
be offered on Triodasi night with Parsad.

The third day of Diwali: Lakshmi Puja on Diwali
The third day of Diwali is devoted to Mother Lakshmi. Hindus cleanse themselves and join with their loved
ones and worship the divine Goddess Mother Lakshmi, in hope that they are blessed with wealth and
prosperity. Hindu celebrate this day by lighting deeyas in and around their house as a sign of good
conquering evil and light overcoming the darkness.
The fourth day of Diwali: Padwa and Govardhan Puja
The fourth day of Diwali is celebrated by performing Govardhan Puja. Lord Krishan many years ago started
this tradition in Vraja, and from then on Hindus everywhere honor Govardhan with this puja.
The fifth day of Diwali: Bhai Duj
The fifth day of diwali is known as Bhai Duj. This day is dedicated especially to sisters. Many years ago, in
the Vedic era, the Lord of death Yama, visited his sister Yamuna on this day and granted his sister a ‘boon’
that whoever visits her on this day shall be free from all sins, and achieve Moksha or final emancipation.
From that day it was tradition that brothers visit their sisters on this day bringing gifts and the sisters pray
for their brother’s safety and success.
At the end of the five days Hindus feel renewed and devoted to God as they look forward to the beginning
of their new financial year.

My first CASMET Biennial General Meeting
Suriname 2015
As a member of CASMET since April 2014, country representative
and hostess of the RCM held in Curacao in May of 2014, upon our
arrival in Surinam I knew a lot of preparation, effort and hard work
must have been put into organizing everything.
Ms. Dixella Martha
Country Representative
(Curaçao)
I expected the Biennial General Meeting to be like the Regional
Council Meeting, however it was bigger and the meetings longer.
Every six months we come together and discuss issues related to our profession, our work
area, our islands, rising infections and so on. After every RCM weekend we return back home
wiser, with higher motivation and charged to continue influencing our profession with passion.
This BGM was more than I expected. I got to know more members of the Association, more
professionals who are or have been dedicated to their profession for many years. I enjoyed
deliberating and finding ways to strategically make our association bigger and better in a way
that suits the needs of the laboratory professional in the region. I’ve learned to embrace and
respect each other’s culture and beliefs and stand for mine as well. I’ve learned that hard work
pays off and that the greatest gift besides receiving an award for “Outstanding Service to the
Regional Council” is the satisfaction you get once you realize you’ve chosen the right
profession.
Greetings,
Dixella Martha
