Australia!at!the!Champion!Lakes!Racecourse.!
Champion! Lakes! is! quickly! developing! as! a! worldBclass! venue.! Paddlers! who!
competed!there!at!the!2008!AusChamps!will!notice!massive!changes.!
A!35Bminute!drive!east!of!the!Perth!CBD!at!Armadale,!the!venue!boasts!a!2000m!
long!8Blane!course!with!OlympicBstandard!start!pontoons,!finish!tower!and!timing!
system.!!
While! the! AusChamps! is! always! an! exciting! event! in! its! own! right,! this! year! will!
have!a!special!flavour!with!stakes!higher!than!ever!before.!With!Australia!hosting!
! the!2016!Club!Crew!World!Championships!in!Adelaide,!this!season!will!be!the!only!
opportunity!for!clubs!to!qualify!and!chase!a!World!Title.!
The!top!five!crews!in!the!Mixed,!Women’s!and!Open!category!across!three!race!distances!in!all!age!categories!will!be!
awarded!the!honour!of!contesting!the!CCWC!less!than!a!year!later.!Of!course,!the!standard!requirement!that!all!clubs!
must!compete!in!the!categories!they’ve!qualified!in!for!the!CCWC!at!next!year’s!AusChamps!still!applies.!More!detail!
on!the!2015!and!2016!race!format!is!inside!this!Bulletin.!
The! other! important! change! is! the! expansion! of! the! Oceania! Championship! racing.! All! Australian! state! squads! will!
now!be!contesting!the!traditional!500m!event!–!PLUS!200m!for!the!first!time.!State!racing!will!also!be!held!in!the!20s!
and! 10s! boats! and! the! top! three! Premier! state! squads! will! qualify! for! the! inaugural! Asian! Club! Championships! in!
November!2015!in!Fuzhou,!China.!Again,!more!detail!is!available!over!the!page.!
Finally,!another!exciting!development!for!this!year’s!event!is!the!introduction!of!the!AusDBF!smartphone!and!tablet!
App!–!DRAGONS!DOWN!UNDER!–!now!available!on!both!the!Android!and!iOS!platforms,!meaning!all!paddlers,!race!

AusDBF!will!NOT!be!requesting!doctors’!clearances!for!Masters!(40+)!paddlers!for!the!2015!AusChamps.!Instead,!
a!new!!‘Wellness!Checkup’!system!will!be!implemented!to!protect!individuals!and!the!sport.!!
!
All!paddlers,!irrespective!of!age,!are!encouraged!to!engage!in!taking!responsibility!for!their!own!prolonged!good!
health!and!longevity!as!competitive!or!social!paddlers.!Regular!medical!checkBups,!blood!pressure,!blood!tests,!
stress!tests!and!muscular!skeletal!recovery!and!maintenance!are!all!highly!recommended.!!

The!onus!will!be!on!all!paddlers!to!declare!that!they!have!had!engaged!in!regular!medical!checkBups!over!the!
past! 12! months! and! to! disclose! that! they! have! no! known! preBexisting! ailments! that! could! endanger! them! or!
others!while!paddling.!!This!should!be!viewed!as!a!vital!investment!in!one’s!health.!

This! change! has! resulted! after! receiving! feedback! on! disparity! in! the! way! requested! medical! clearance! were!
treated!by!doctors.!Some!doctors!refused!point!blank!to!write!clearances!due!to!litigation!concerns,!while!some!
wrote!clearances!without!performing!or!prescribing!any!form!of!tests.!!Fortunately!there!was!a!great!depth!of!
sound!practice!in!the!middle!ground.!
!
While! the! situation! was! not! ideal,! AusDBF! is! aware! of! at! least! two! instances! whereby! paddlers! who! sought!
clearances! were! found! to! have! serious! medical! issues.! These! issues! precluded! them! from! participating! at!
AusChamps! and! required! them! to! undergo! cardiac! surgery.! ! We! are! happy! to! report! positive! outcomes,! the!
prompts!made!could!well!have!resulted!in!preventing!premature!disabilities!or!death.!
!
To!assist!you!with!your!health!and!maintaining!positive!involvement!in!dragon!boat!racing,!AusDBF!has!provided!
the!below!document!&!questionnaire!penned!by!medical!professionals!who!paddle!and!understand!the!sport.!!
These!documents!can!be!used!as!a!guide!while!speaking!with!your!doctor.!!

At( the( 2012( Australian( Championships( in( Melbourne( the( Dragon( Boat( community( was( devastated( when( an(
experienced( paddler( collapsed( and( died( during( a( Senior( B( 500m( race.( ( The( cause( of( death( was( a( cardiac(
arrest.( It( is( very( likely( that( the( paddler( had( no( idea( he( was( at( risk.( As( a( result,( government( authorities(
requested(AusDBF(take(action(to(address(the(risks(of(competing(in(dragon(boat,(and(identified(all(competitors(
over(40(years(of(age(as(being(at(a(higher(risk(of(stroke(and(heart(attack.(
While(there(are(no(statistics(for(the(incidence(of(sudden(death(during(dragon(boat(races,(we(know(that(this(
can(occur.(We(also(know(that(sudden(death(can(occur(at(any(age.(
Dragon( Boat( racing( involves( a( combination( of( frequent( bursts( of( intense( activity( during( 200m( and( 500m(
races,(often(many(races(per(day(and(longer(events(such(as(the(2(km(sweeps(race(which(are(often(held(at(the(
end(of(a(long(day(of(races.(Our(demographic(is(also(skewed(such(that(we(have(many(paddlers(over(the(age(of(
35(yrs.(who(are(competing(at(a(high(level(and(often(backing(up(in(races(across(several(age(categories(on(the(
same(day,(hence(increasing(the(work(load(on(their(bodies.(
Depending( on( the( level( of( effort( achieved( during( paddling( a( competitor’s( heart( rate( can( go( from( resting( to(
maximum(in(as(little(as(30(seconds.(If(a(paddler(has(an(underlying(heart(condition(this(sudden(rise(may(lead(
to(serious(problems(especially(if(the(condition(has(not(been(identified.((
We(are(encouraging(the(entire(Dragon(Boat(community(irrespective(of(age,(fitness(or(experience,(to(have(an(
annual( Wellness( Checkup( to( ensure( that( they( have( no( unidentified( cardiac( condition( and( that( they( remain(
healthy(and(able(to(enjoy(competing(for(many(years.(

Our(recommendation(is(that(our(paddlers(complete(the(following(questionnaire(prior(to(seeing(a(doctor(for(
their( consultation,( have( a( physical( examination( focusing( predominantly( on( the( cardiovascular( system,( a(
Cardiovascular(Risk(Assessment(and(an(annual(resting(12(lead(ECG(
If(you(have(any(concerns(as(a(result(of(your(examination,(our(consultant(cardiologist(has(recommended(that(
the( most( useful( additional( test( is( a( Stress( ECG( to( Maximal( Heart( –( i.e.( To( continue( the( test( to( the( point( of(
exhaustion(rather(than(the(usual(Stress(ECG(which(aims(to(reach(85%(of(age(predicted(maximum(heart(rate.((
We(wish(to(advise(paddlers(that(there(is(no(100%(guarantee(that(by(doing(an(annual(Wellness(Check,(this(will(
prevent(sudden(death(during(or(after(competition.(But(we(anticipate(by(adopting(our(proposal(paddlers(will(
significantly(reduce(their(risk.(

Every! year! AusDBF! conducts! a! survey! of! participants! to! see! what! they! thought! about! their! AusChamps!
experience!and!what!good!ideas!they!have!to!improve!the!next!one.!
With!the!AusChamps!now!holding!Small!Boat!(10s)!racing!for!the!last!four!seasons,!paddlers!have!indicated!very!
strong!views!about!the!format.!While!an!overwhelming!number!of!people!felt!the!10s!should!be!retained,!the!
majority!felt!some!clubs!were!‘gaming’!the!category!and!neglecting!the!traditional!20s!racing.!
With!this!in!mind!we!have!removed!restrictions!around!the!10s!and!20s!crews!seen!in!past!years.!For!2015,!all!
paddlers!will!be!able!to!contest!both!10s!and!20s!in!the!same!category!and!division.!That!means,!for!example,!
you!can!now!paddle!in!the!Premier!Open!10s!AND!Premier!Open!20s.!
The!rationale!behind!this!is!that!the!winner!of!the!10s!can!claim!to!have!beaten!all!clubs!and!raced!against!the!
best! on! offer.! Previously,! larger! and! stronger! clubs! focussed! on! the! 20s.! It! is! also! hoped! clubs! will! no! longer!
choose!between!the!Small!and!Standard!Boats,!and!the!20s!competition!will!be!stronger.!AusDBF!is!aware!some!
clubs!had!20Bplus!men!or!women!available,!but!chose!to!enter!the!Small!Boat!Class!as!they!felt!it!enhanced!their!
opportunities! for! medalling,! as! they! did! not! have! the! depth! across! the! board.! Now,! clubs! can! put! their! best!
efforts!into!both!Classes!and!see!exactly!where!they!stand.!
We! have! also! expanded! the! representative! racing! program,! with! distances! of! 500m! and! 200m! in! Small! and!
Standard! Classes! on! offer.! The! Oceania! Championships! will! now! be! a! standalone! day,! giving! all! paddlers! the!
opportunity!to!enjoy!their!results,!without!having!to!swap!jerseys!and!slip!into!their!club!crews!in!the!afternoon.!
The!introduction!of!10s!and!20s!is!also!designed!to!strengthen!the!competition.!Many!smaller!states!don’t!have!
the! depth! to! contest! 20s! in! a! number! of! age! categories.! This! meant! fields! were! often! small,! and! some! state!
crews!prepared!all!season,!only!to!be!told!at!the!last!minute!they!had!no!one!to!race.!Under!the!new!format,!
most!states!should!be!able!to!enter!more!age!categories,!giving!them!the!opportunity!to!race!for!the!first!time.!
Larger! states! also! benefit,! as! they! will! face! greater! competition! and! be! genuinely! pushed.! Let’s! face! it,! a! race!
with! just! a! couple! of! crews! in! it! isn’t! very! exciting! –! but! a! field! comprising! all! states! and! regions! looks! like! a!
genuine!national!competition.!
It!is!also!hoped!representative!squads!will!also!enter!20s!boats,!knowing!they!can!field!a!strong!Small!Boat!crew!
and!then!an!expanded!squad!for!the!Standard!Boats.!
States!have!the!ability!to!construct!their!squad!in!whatever!format!they!choose.!For!example,!paddlers!may!be!
used!in!10s!and!20s!racing!and!in!200m!and!500m!distances.!However,!they!may!also!have!people!specialising!in!
Small!Boats!or!Standard!Boats!and!over!certain!distances.!There!is!nothing!to!stop!selectors!picking!the!same!
group!of!paddlers!for!all!races,!or!having!distinct!crews!for!each.!Or!a!mixture.!
Commencing!from!this!year,!the!top!three!Premier!(and!possibly!Junior)!squads!will!be!awarded!the!honour!of!
representing! Australia! at! the! Asian! Club! Championship! in! Fuzhou,! China.!This!highly!competitive!event!will!be!
televised!throughout!Asia!and!held!at!the!new!Asian!Dragon!Boat!Headquarters!–!a!purpose!built!US$1.7!billion!
facility!next!to!the!Chinese!Olympic!Sports!facilities.!
Finally,!It!is!expected!that!all!clubs!and!states!will!make!the!fielding!of!20s!in!all!age!groups!and!Premier!Crews!a!
priority.!We!have!previously!seen!club!entries!in!Senior!A,!Senior!B!and!Senior!C!10s,!but!not!a!single!20s!entry.!
If!you!are!arriving!at!the!AusChamps!with!30Bplus!paddlers!and!don’t!field!a!Standard!Boat!crew,!you!may!not!be!
breaking!the!rules,!but!you!are!breaching!the!spirit!of!the!event!and!diminishing!the!important!20s!Class,!and!
weakening!the!depth!of!our!sport.!
To! be! clear! –! we! encourage! racing! in! age! groups! and! know! many! people! want! to! compete! against! their! age!
peers,!however!we!have!a!collective!responsibility!to!strengthen!all!age!categories.!AusDBF!is!giving!all!teams!

The! Jon! Taylor! Award! recognises! outstanding! achievements! and!
contributions! made! by! an! individual! who! has! assisted! with! the!
development!and!growth!of!the!sport!of!dragon!boat!racing!in!Australia.!!
The! Award! is! presented! each! year! at! the! AusChamps! to! a! remarkable!
volunteer,!in!memory!and!celebration!of!the!life!Jon!Taylor.!The!award!is!in!
recognition! of! the! outstanding! contribution! that! Jon! Taylor! made! to! the!
development! and! growth! of! the! Sport! in! Australia! since! he! first! became!
involved!in!the!sport!in!the!late!1980’s.!!!
Jon! Taylor! was! a! founding! member! of! Australian! Dragon! Boat! Federation!
and!a!visionary.!!He!held!positions!on!the!Board!as!Administration!Director,!
and!then!President!from!2003!until!his!retirement!in!April!2008.!!

Jon! was! one! of! those! truly! amazing! people,! who! was! willing! to! give!
everything! to! the! growth! and! development! of! this! sport.! ! Jon! was!
passionate! about! the! sport! of! Dragon! Boat! Racing! and! was! very!
determined! to! see! AusDBF! reach! its! potential! of! having! all! States! in!
Australian! as! members.! This! was! finally! achieved! at! his! final! meeting! in!
April!2008!when!Tasmania!became!a!full!member.!He!was!also!a!driver!of!
the!development!of!Oceania,!which!has!now!been!established.!
Sadly,!JT!passed!away!in!December!2008!after!a!long!illness.!The!Award!was!established!to!honour!his!legacies!
and!was!first!presented!in!2009.!

From! 23! March! to! 7! April! 2016,! Australia! will! host! the! world’s! biggest! dragon! boat! events! in! Adelaide,! South!

• The!ADBF!Asian!Championships!(23!–!26!March!2016)!
• The!Australian,!TransBTasman!&!Oceania!Championships!(24!–!29!March!2016)!
• The!IDBF!Club!Crew!World!Championships!(30!March!–!7!April!2016)!

While! planning! is! well! underway,! we! need! at! least! six! clever! designs! to! help! brand! the! Championships! with! a!
logo!and!mascot!for!each!event.!And!that’s!where!you!come!in.!
!
You!don’t!need!to!be!a!professional!designer!or!artist!–!you!just!need!a!great!idea!and!imagination.!Your!entry!
can!be!anything!from!a!sketch!by!hand,!through!to!something!crafted!with!a!computer.!!
!
Professional!graphic!designers!will!then!use!their!talents!to!turn!your!concept!drawing!into!the!final!artwork.!
!
The!winning!designs!will!be!used!throughout!2015!and!at!the!2016!Championships!to!promote!the!events.!You!
will!also!see!your!design!on!TBShirts,!stickers,!posters!and!all!over!the!internet!and!social!media.!

Winners!will!receive!a!prize!and!be!presented!with!a!commemorative!plaque!at!the!Championships!in!front!of!
thousands!of!competitors.!
