2012-13 Annual Report DRAFT
2012-
2013 Annual Report Undermain Theatreʼs Annual Report is sponsored by

CHANGING OF THE GUARD
It is with great pleasure that we deliver Undermain Theatreʼs Annual Report for the fiscal
year 2012-13. For Undermain, this has been a year of bold growth and forward thinking. As we
enter our 30th Season, it is undeniable that we have reached the brink of something
extraordinary for Undermain Theatre, theatre in Dallas, and beyond.
Undermain continues to expand its organizational and artistic capacities. As a result of a
2007 strategic plan, funded by the Simmons Foundation, Undermain began its first capital
campaign in 2008, with Angus Wynne and Ashley Kisner as co-chairs. Partially funded by a
2009 grant from the Simmons Foundation, Undermain was able to engage a Fundraising
Consultant, a Board of Trustees, and an Organizational Development Consultant. As a result,
Undermain Theatre has been able to:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Expand the number of donors by 50%
Implement a Season Pass membership
Purchase a vastly superior donor software, PatronManager
Manage a donor and prospect database of 883 accounts
Expand the Board of Trustees from 9 to 15
Write job descriptions for Board members, officers, staff, and interns
Create working Board committees
Develop a Board of Trustees Notebook
Adopt Policies and Procedures consistent with Best Practices
Secure a Challenge Grant of $250,000 to raise the final $500,000 by July 31, 2013
Raise over $3 million!
It is a strong, shared vision of the Board of Trustees to ensure the sustainability of
Undermain Theatre. A unique theatre that will continue to make a lifelong impact on the lives of
so many individuals by maintaining a critical role in the renaissance of Deep Ellum, introducing
new plays by great playwrights to Dallas and America, and by promoting the literary tradition in
theatre.
Personally, it has been an honor and a pleasure to serve as Board President of
Undermain Theatre during this exciting time. I say farewell with a full heart and utmost
confidence in the future of Undermain.
Best wishes,
Linda Patston
Board President

A CAMPAIGN FOR THE FUTURE
A Campaign for the Future was created to greatly
enhance Undermain Theatreʼs ability to produce nationally
acclaimed theatre in its 30th Season and beyond, and to
create a safer, more comfortable audience environment that
will serve a more diverse population.
In May 2012, an individual who wishes to remain anonymous offered Undermain Theatre a $250,000 Challenge Grant. The Challenge was for Undermain to raise $500,000 in new or increased gifts from Individuals, Foundations, Corporations, or Government Grants in order to complete the “Campaign for the Future” by July 31, 2013. Undermain Theatre successfully exceeded its
$3,000,000 goal on time!

 The productions in Undermainʼs 29th Season all received strong, positive reviews. The season
included three regional premieres.
 The Theater Communications Group (TCG) held its 2013 National Conference in Dallas, and
Undermain Theatre was heavily involved as a member of the Host Committee. Artistic Director
Katherine Owens spoke on a panel regarding “The Director as Innovator” and hosted a “dinearound” at Deep Ellumʼs All Good Café. TCG members raved about the warm reception they
received from Undermainʼs hospitality table during the conference.

“Undermain Reads at the Dallas Museum of Art” continues to be an extremely successful
collaboration. We consistently bring in record audiences as large as 300 to the Dallas Museum
of Art, and we continue to cultivate new patrons for both Undermain and the Dallas Museum of
Art through this series.
 As of July 2013, the Undermain website (www.undermain.org) has been completely reinvented
and looks great!
 With the generously donated services of Larry Taylor and Eric Bird of Beyond The Horizon, we
have begun using a new database that integrates box office sales with donor management.
This will increase office functionality as well as strengthen Undermainʼs relationship with
patrons and donors.
 Undermainʼs logo has been updated. It still resembles the sprite of the past thirty years, but
now has a cleaner modern look.
 The chart of accounts has been re-organized this fiscal year.
 JoLynne Jensen put Undermain in touch with our new insurance agent, Lisa Newman, who
has fought hard to get Undermain amazing insurance at an unbelievable price.
 Undermain had its first appearance in the Arts District and produced the first theatrical
performance at the Dallas City Performance Hall with Penelope.
 Abraham Zobell's Home Movie: Final Reel… has been selected as a recipient of a grant from
the TACA Donna Wilhelm Family New Works Fund!
 Completing A Campaign for the Future by exceeding our $3,000,000 goal!
 Undermain was honored to particpate in ARTSPARK on April 6, 2013, at the North Park Mall. ARTSPARK is an intiative of Business Council For The Arts, uniting commerce and culture. Non-‐profit arts organizations set up booths to create more awareness about their mission and cause. Development Director, JoLynne Jensen and Development Associate, Maryam Baig greeted over 150 people who stopped by to learn more about Undermain. 10 UNDERMAIN OUT AND ABOUT

11 UNDERMAIN AT NASHER SCULPTURE CENTER
On June 13th at the Nasher Sculpture Center, Tony Award-Winning Scenic Designer John
Arnone, Undermain Theatre Artistic Director Katherine Owens, and Undermain Theatre
Artistic Associate Dylan Key held a discussion of the relationship between the visual arts and
live theatre. Arnone, the resident scenic designer for Undermain Theatre, presented a series
of his scenic models for Undermain.
These models were the jumping-off point for a conversation about
the steps a play takes from the poetic language of a playwright's
script to the visual design of the fully staged production.
UNDERMAIN AT KLYDE WARREN PARK
In April, Big D Reads, an initiative of the
National Endowment for the Arts, to
perform dramatic readings at Klyde Warren
Park, invited Undermain. Development
Associate Maryam Baig and Emerging
Artist Colleen Ahern read passages from
Fahrenheit 451. Big D Reads provides citizens with the
opportunity to read and discuss a single book in Dallas with
month-long programming (panel
discussions, author readings, movie
screenings, and so forth).
