THE SUNSHINE COMMITTEE
NEEDS YOUR HELP!
The Verdi Lodge Sunshine Committee allows the club
to extend condolences, and send flowers or gift to
members who are hospitalized, grieving, have a serious
hardship, or are otherwise in need of support. The club
is effective in this mission only if we know about those
in need. So please contact Josephine Scalora at 302998-6191 as soon as you know of a club member or a
member of their family who is in need. This would also
include a person who has supported or contributed to the
club over time. It is better if we hear about a need
several times rather than to assume that we have heard.
Together we can help our members in their time of need.
Your cooperation & participation is appreciated.

ON TURNING 80
By Leo Vadala
A few short months ago I wrote a piece about this dumb guy who had been the "victim" of a
surprise party on the occasion of his 70th birthday. The article was called "ON TURNING 70".
That dumb guy - you guessed it! - Actually was yours truly. And I say "dumb" with good reasons,
first and foremost because, by the age of 70, everyone - even someone with an IQ of 2 plus 2
equals 5 - should have learned not to trust women. But I did.
You remember that Jim Carrey movie, "Dumb and Dumber"? That was the story of my life.
And you can even add dumbest because - as they schemed to fool me - the women involved
had been a bit careless, and had actually made at least a couple of obvious mistakes that would have alerted even the
most bird-brained yo-yo that something was afoot. And I didn't pick up on them.
Long story short, when I walked in the club and everyone yelled: "SURPRISE!” I was not just surprised, I was surprised
and shocked, shocked and mad at myself for having been so damned dumb. But it turned out to be a very nice party,
lots of friends and relatives attended, I enjoyed myself, had a glorious time and all was forgiven.
Memo to ALL men - do NOT trust women. If they promise and swear that they are not planning to spring a surprise
party on you, do not believe them. They are planning. You have been warned. I wrote that story "a few short months
ago" - 120 short months ago, to be exact. Ten years, a full decade. I know, it's an old a worn-out cliché, but it is so true
- time indeed does flies. And I specifically wrote "a few short months ago" because that is exactly what it has felt like
to me - a brief, a very brief period of time. Ten years just flew by, literally.
And yet, a lot has happened, quite a lot, in this brief, very brief period of time. One eighth of my entire life, to be exact.
A song comes to mind, a song that describes quite well what has happened in my life. It goes something like this:
I've loved, I've laughed and cried, I've had my fill, my share of losing, and now, as tears subside, I find it all so amusing.
And I have in fact shed tears for the loss of some very close relatives and some very good friends who weren't fortunate
enough to continue enjoying life. And, to some extent, those tears have been balanced by the smiles I smiled as I
acquired new relatives and new very good friends. Mainly, though, I have kept busy enjoying my retirement by doing
exactly what I had planned to do when I first retired - absolutely nothing! And, magically, I have managed to accomplish
that while keeping boredom at a minimum.
I have also traveled quite a bit, mostly to my native country - Italy - and I got to see some of its gorgeous scenery, mostly
in non-touristy places. If I live to be 800 and if I spent all those years traveling all over Italy, I still wouldn't get to see
all of its beautiful places.
And speaking of songs, I have also enjoyed life doing a lot of what I love doing most, singing. Every social occasion
has been a good excuse for me to break out into songs, and I did just that together with my many friends, singing mainly
the old songs, the old Italian songs everyone loves.
I am immensely grateful as I see my two daughters doing quite well as wives, mothers as well as professionally. And I
feel quite fortunate to see my grandson grow into a serious and truly remarkable young man, and my two granddaughters
doing very well in school as they rapidly approach their teen years.
Mostly, though, I feel incredibly lucky to have enjoyed life in relative good health together with the person I love most
- my dear wife Maria.
Has life been perfect? Of course not, but I have learned to accept not only what life has
provided for me and my family, but to be grateful for all it has provided. I am totally
contented with what I have and, with the possible exception of youth, there is absolutely
nothing else that I wish I had.
What can I say? With any kind of luck, in a "few short months" I will be writing an
article called "ON TURNING 90".
And yes! In typical Italian fashion, I did touch the family jewels as I wrote that line.
Happy Birthday to me and to all the September guys and gals!
