2007 Mean Green Football
North Texas (0-1) at Southern Methodist (0-1)
Sept. 8, 2007 • Gerald J. Ford Stadium (32,000)
Dallas, Texas • 7 p.m. CDT
The Particulars
North Texas travels 35 miles to Dallas to take on SMU in a storied rivalry that was renewed last year after a 13-year hiatus. This will be the first time North Texas has played
at SMU since 1992 and the first time ever in Gerald J. Ford Stadium which was opened for
play in 2000. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and there is no television. The game can be
heard on the Mean Green Radio Network with George Dunham and Hank Dickenson.
The Principals
North Texas suffered a 79-10 loss at the hands of eighth-ranked Oklahoma in the season
opener Saturday in Norman, Okla. It was a rough debut for the Mean Green’s first-year
head coach Todd Dodge, who came to North Texas late last December after a highly-successful career at nearby Southlake Carroll High School. SMU opens the season at home
against Texas Tech today and will have just four days off before hosting North Texas
Saturday. The Mustangs return nine starters on offense and seven on defense from a team
that was 6-6 last year.
The Series
SMU leads the series with North Texas 27-4-1, including a 21-1-1 record in Dallas. North
Texas won just one of the first 22 meetings from 1922-1976, but the Mean Green has won
two of the last three meetings, including a 24-6 victory last year in Denton. North Texas
has never lost to SMU in Denton (2-0) but has won only one game in Dallas, which was a
7-0 victory in 1933.
Next Game
North Texas will have two weeks to prepare for its conference and home-opener against
Florida Atlantic Sept. 22. That game will kickoff from Fouts Field at 6:05 p.m. SMU will
play its second Sun Belt Conference opponent in as many weeks, traveling to Arkansas
State Sept. 22.

2007 Mean Green Football
North Texas & SMU Ties – College Football Hall of Fame coach Hayden Fry coached
SMU from 1962-72 before coming to North Texas from 1973-78. Fry never faced North
Texas while he was at SMU, but did battle the Mustangs three times while manning the
sideline for the Mean Green. Fry was 1-2 against SMU… SMU sophomore center Mitch
Enright and freshman linebacker Pete Fleps both played for North Texas head coach
Todd Dodge at Southlake Carroll High School… SMU has three players on its team
from Denton. Sophomore quarterback Justin Willis and freshman defensive lineman
Ben Goldthorpe both played at Denton Ryan high school while freshman defensive end
Anthony Sowe played at Denton High… SMU freshman running back DeMikel Shankel
was an understudy for North Texas running back Jamario Thomas at Spring Hill High
School in Longview, Texas… The play-by-play voice of SMU football is North Texas
graduate Rich Phillips.
Great Players in the Series – There have been several great players and coaches to take
part in the rivalry between SMU and North Texas. Mean Green Hall of Famers J.T. Smith,
Bernard Jackson, Burks Washington and Iseed Khoury are just a few of the players to
face the Mustangs over the years. SMU greats Eric Dickerson, Craig James, and Reggie
Dupard all faced North Texas during their outstanding collegiate careers. The 1976 matchup between North Texas and SMU featured several familiar names to Mean Green fans past
and present. Khoury, Smith and Washington all played extensively in a game that ended
with SMU winning 38-31. Also on that team were Frank Babb and Greg Davidson, who
both have sons on the current Mean Green roster (Zach Babb and Christian Davidson).
More on the 1976 Game – In perhaps the best game of the series with North Texas and
SMU, the Mustangs held off a valiant comeback effort to win 38-31 at Texas Stadium. The
two teams combined for 945 yards of total offense and 45 first downs. With SMU holding
a 31-25 lead late in the fourth quarter North Texas appeared to have stopped a scoring
threat by holding the Mustangs on a 4th-and-goal situation at the 1-yard line. North Texas
was called for an off-sides penalty and SMU scored a touchdown on the next play to ice
the game. North Texas head coach Hayden Fry was quoted after the game saying “We stop
them at the goal line on fourth down and then line up off side. How we could be so stupid,
I’ll never know.”
Dodge Ball Begins – Todd Dodge became the 16th head coach in North Texas football
history when he was hired to lead the Mean Green on Dec. 12, 2006. Dodge is back for
his second tour of duty at North Texas after serving as the Mean Green passing game
coordinator in 1992 and 1993. Over the last five years as the head coach at Southlake
Carroll High School, Dodge led his team to an amazing 79-1 record while winning four
state championships. His only loss during that time was by a single point in the 2003 state
championship game.
A Return to the North Texas Sideline – Mean Green head coach Todd Dodge is making
his second tour of duty on the North Texas sideline after he was an assistant coach under
Dennis Parker in 1992 and 1993. Dodge was the passing game coordinator under Parker,
helping teach the most prolific passer in North Texas history Mitch Maher. During his
two years as the passing game coordinator, Dodge’s offense totaled 4,806 passing yards
for an average of 218.5 yards per game. Under his guidance in 1993, North Texas had
2,626 yards and 24 passing touchdowns, both of which have only been surpassed one time
since then - and that was the year after Dodge left (1994). Maher, who holds North Texas
passing records for career yards with 8,515, attributes much of his development to Dodge.
North Texas has not had over 2,000 yards passing as a team since 1995, which was the first
year the Mean Green returned to Div. I-A.
Making the Rare Jump – North Texas head coach Todd Dodge became just the sixth
coach in history to make the rare jump from high school to major college head coach
when he was announced as the new Mean Green boss on Dec. 12, 2006. Dodge joins Paul
Brown of Ohio State, who came from Massillon, Ohio High School in 1941; Roy Lester
of Maryland, who came from Montgomery High School in Rockville, Md. in 1969; Bob
Commings of Iowa, who came from Massillon High School in 1974; Jerry Faust of Notre
Dame, who came from Moeller High School in Cincinnati in 1981 and Dennis Parker who
came to North Texas from Marshall (Texas) High School in 1991. Brown coached for three
seasons at Ohio State and had a career record of 18-8-1. Lester was 7-25 in three years at
Maryland, Commings was 17-38 in five years at Iowa, Faust was 30-26-1 in five years at
Notre Dame and Parker was 11-21-1 during his three years at North Texas.
Rough Welcome – North Texas head coach Todd Dodge’s first game as a college head
coach just so happened to come against one of the best teams in the nation. As just the
sixth head coach in college football history to make the jump from high school to a major
school, Dodge was just the second of those to begin his collegiate career against a ranked
opponent. Bob Commings of Iowa lost 24-7 to sixth-ranked Michigan in his first game
after coming from Massillon (Ohio) High School in 1974. Of the five previous coaches
to jump from high school to major college, only Paul Brown of Ohio State had a winning
record in his first year when he went 6-1-1 in 1941.

2007 Mean Green Football
Bouncing Back – Prior to this year North Texas had lost four of its last five season-opening
games, but had bounced back for a win in the second game in three of those four years. In
2002 North Texas lost to Texas 27-0 in the opener then defeated Nicholls State 23-0 the next
week. In 2003 the Mean Green lost 37-3 at Oklahoma before defeating Baylor 52-14 in
week two. Last year, North Texas lost 56-7 at Texas then came back to beat SMU 24-6 in
its next game. The only time in the last five years that North Texas lost its first two games
was 2004, which was also the last time the Mean Green won a conference championship and
played in a bowl game.
Fresh Faces – North Texas had 21 players make their first appearance in a game during
last week’s loss to Oklahoma. Of those 21 who saw their first action, 15 were freshman,
including nine true freshmen. For redshirt freshmen offensive linemen Matt Menard and
Esteban Santiago it was not only their first action in a game, it was also their first career
start. Walk-on true freshman kicker Thomas Moreland also saw his first action.
Walk-On Success – North Texas has had success in developing walk-on players into key
contributors over the past few years. On this year’s team there are four starters who came to
North Texas as walk-ons. Senior linebacker Derek Mendoza, junior punter Truman Spencer
and junior wide receiver Casey Fitzgerald all came to North Texas as walk-ons but have
earned scholarships in their time on the team. Freshman kicker Thomas Moreland is the
remaining starter who came as a non-scholarship player. Perhaps the best player in North
Texas history that originally came as a walk-on was linebacker Chris Hurd who concluded
his career as the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2003.
Dodge Witnesses Another Record – Todd Dodge has always been considered an
offense coach and he appreciates high scoring games – unless they come at his expense.
Unfortunately for Dodge, he has been on the North Texas sideline for the two highestscoring games by an opponent. In 1993 he was the passing game coordinator for North
Texas when the Mean Green allowed a school-record 76 points in the season opener to
Nebraska. That dubious record was broken last week when North Texas allowed 79 points
in a loss to Oklahoma.
Top 10 Opponents – North Texas has played at least one top 10 opponent every year since
2000. Last week’s match-up against No. 8 Oklahoma was actually the lowest-ranked top
10 opponent North Texas has faced during that time. In 2000 the Mean Green faced No. 4
Kansas State, followed by No. 3 Oklahoma in 2001; No. 2 Texas in 2002; No. 1 Oklahoma
in 2003; No. 7 Texas in 2004; No. 7 LSU in 2005 and No. 2 Texas in 2006. North Texas has
never defeated a top 10 foe, going 0-13 in those games. Here are the results of North Texas’
games against ranked opponents:

Chasing a Repeat of History – North Texas had a combined 5-18 record over the past two
years, going 2-9 in 2005 and 3-9 in 2006. The last time North Texas lost 18 games in a twoyear span was 1981-82, which it followed up with a conference championship and an 8-4
record in 1983.
Building a Winning Attitude – Head Coach Todd Dodge has made it a mission to build his
team with players who have experienced winning and been around winning programs. The
18 freshmen who make up Dodge’s first signing class have combined to play in a total of
11 state championship games in high school. Of those 11 state championship appearances,
seven have won state titles. Wide receivers Sam Dibrell and Marcus King, linebacker Justin
Padron, defensive end Kyle Russo and quarterback Giovanni Vizza all won at least one state
championship in high school.
Letterman Breakdown – Of the 104 players on the current North Texas roster, 45 have
earned at least one varsity letter while playing football for the Mean Green. Only 11 players
have earned three letters and eight of those are expected to be starters this week. There are
16 players who have earned two letters and 18 who have earned one letter. Of the 59 players
who have not yet earned a varsity letter at North Texas, 16 are in the current two-deep.

2007 Mean Green Football
Television Time – North Texas is scheduled to play on television five times in 2007,
including the season-opener at Oklahoma which was televised nationally by FOX Sports
Net. The home-opener against Florida Atlantic will be televised back to the state of Florida
as part of the Owls television deal on Sept. 22. The Mean Green will also play on ESPN
Regional as part of the Sun Belt Conference television package in games against LouisianaLafayette, Louisiana-Monroe and Arkansas State.
Size Wise – Senior defensive end Blake Burruss and freshman offensive lineman Jacob
Kaiser are the tallest members of the Mean Green this year, standing at 6-7. Sophomore
offensive lineman Ajani Banks is the heaviest North Texas player at 328 pounds. Backup
running back Joshua Maldonado is the shortest player at 5-5 while cornerback Gary Oubre
is the lightest at 160 pounds.
Four Named Preseason All-Conference – North Texas placed four individuals on the
Sun Belt preseason all-conference, which was more than every school in the league except
Louisiana-Monroe and Middle Tennessee. Senior defensive end Jeremiah Chapman,
senior linebacker Maurice Holman, junior punter Truman Spencer and senior safety Aaron
Weathers all earned the prestigious preseason honor.
Mean Green Picked Seventh – North Texas was picked to finish seventh in the preseason
Sun Belt Conference poll which is voted on by league coaches and selected media. The
Mean Green finished 2006 seventh in the standings with a 2-5 conference record.
Coaches Up/Coaches Down – North Texas will put four assistant coaches in the press
box during games and will have five assistants along with head coach Todd Dodge on the
sideline. In the press box will be offensive coordinator Todd Ford, along with running
backs coach Shelton Gandy, safeties coach Chuck Petersen and defensive ends coach David
Rausch. On the sideline with Dodge will be defensive coordinator Ron Mendoza, defensive
tackles coach Robert Drake, wide receivers coach Clayton George, cornerbacks coach
Butch LaCroix and offensive line coach Spencer Leftwich. Graduate assistant coaches
Beau Davidson and Scott Vestal will also be in the press box.
Well Represented in the NFL – North Texas has had more players drafted to play
professional football than any other team in the Sun Belt Conference. Since the first NFL
draft in 1936, North Texas has had 77 players drafted, including seven players picked in
the first round. Arkansas State is second among Sun Belt Schools which have had players
drafted with 46. Joe Greene is the highest drafted player ever from North Texas when he
was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the fourth overall pick in 1969.
Enrollment on Rapid Pace – The University of North Texas enrollment for the 2007
fall semester is 33,500, making it the fourth-largest university in the state of Texas. The
enrollment has increased by an average of nearly five percent each year since 2000, when
the enrollment was 26,493. North Texas is the fastest-growing university in Texas and at
its current growth rate, would surpass the University of Houston by the year 2010. Along
with Houston, only the University of Texas-Austin and Texas A&M University have more
students than North Texas.
Gender Equity Report Card - The North Texas athletic department ranked second in
the nation and received a grade of ‘A’ on the Gender Equity Scorecard - an annual report
published Penn State University-York in an attempt to measure each school’s commitment
to women’s athletics. The report ranked colleges in the NCAA’s Football Bowl Subdivision
on opportunities available to women’s athletics, including scholarships, participation,
coaching salaries, recruitment budget and operating expenses. The study incorporated 113
colleges which represent the 11 major football playing conferences. The Mean Green
finished second only to the University of Nevada, which finished on top of the study for
the second straight year. North Texas is one of only 11 schools in the country, and the only
program in the south, to receive a grade of ‘A’ from the scorecard. North Texas was also
recognized as the champion of the Sun Belt Conference in which no other schools received
the ‘A’ grade.
Academic Achievement – North Texas placed 12 football players on the 2006-07 Sun Belt
Conference Commissioners list which recognizes student-athletes who maintain a grade
point average between 3.5 and 4.0 for the academic year. Louisiana-Lafayette also had
12 members of its football team on the list while no other Sun Belt school had more than
seven honorees. North Texas also had 21 additional football players on the 2006-07 Sun
Belt Academic Honor Roll which recognizes student-athletes with a grade point average
between 3.0 and 3.5.
Mean Green and Under Armour - The North Texas football team has entered an
agreement with athletic apparel company Under Armour for the 2007 season. The team
will be outfitted from head to toe with Under Armour, including shoes, socks, pants,
jerseys, gloves and wrist bands. North Texas is one of only five college football programs
to have such a deal to wear the popular performance gear, joining Auburn, Maryland, South
Carolina and Texas Tech. It is the first time in recent history Mean Green players will be
outfitted exclusively by one company. Coaches will also be outfitted in Under Armour for
game-day.

Youthful Exuberance – At one point during the second half against Oklahoma, the
North Texas offense ran a play with five freshmen on the field. Redshirt freshmen
offensive linemen Matt Menard and Esteban Santiago joined true freshmen Giovanni
Vizza, Micah Mosely, and B.J. Lewis on the field at the same time against the No. 8
Sooners.
Meager Nears Mark – Junior quarterback Daniel Meager completed 15 of his 27
passes against Oklahoma which was only one completion shy of his career-best.
Meager had 16 completions for 152 yards and one touchdown against Arkansas State in
2005.
Vizza Shines in Debut – True freshman quarterback Giovanni Vizza came off the
bench in the second half to spark North Texas’ only touchdown scoring drive against
Oklahoma. Vizza hooked up with Casey Fitzgerald on a 69-yard touchdown pass
late in the third quarter. It was first time in North Texas history that a true freshman
quarterback threw a touchdown in the first game of his career.
Preseason Defensive Player of the Year
Tyrell Johnson (Arkansas State, S)
Sun Belt Standings
Conference Leaders – North Texas wide receivers Casey Fitzgerald and Brandon
Jackson both had seven catches against Oklahoma which was the most receptions by
any Sun Belt Conference player in week one. Since the Sun Belt conference began
football in 2001, the Mean Green has never had a receiver lead the league in receptions
in any of the 69 regular-season weeks that it has played. Fitzgerald also leads the
league in receiving yards which is another first for a North Texas player since the
beginning of the Sun Belt. With the team’s 232 passing yards against Oklahoma,
North Texas ranks second in the Sun Belt, which is also its highest ranking ever in that
category.
Passing Attack – North Texas attempted 38 passes in the season-opener against
Oklahoma which was more attempts than the Mean Green had in any game last year.
The last time North Texas attempted 38 passes in a game was the final game of the 2005
season when it threw 38 times against Arkansas State. Prior to 2005, North Texas had
not attempted 38 passes in a game since the 1999 season.

Mighty Casey – Junior wide receiver Casey Fitzgerald had a career night against
Oklahoma with seven catches for 126 yards and the team’s only touchdown. His
previous best for catches in a game was two and he previous best for receiving
yards was 54, both which came last year against Louisiana-Lafayette. The 69-yard
touchdown reception he had against the Sooners was the longest reception of his career
and the longest by any Mean Green player since 1999. After the first week of play
for all Sun Belt Conference teams, Fitzgerald leads the league in both receptions and
receiving yards.

Mosley Makes Plays – True freshman running back Micah Mosely saw his first action
against Oklahoma showed signs of good things to come. While he only had five carries
for 15 yards, he was the team’s leading rusher against the Sooners and had a nice 11yard run for a first down early in the third quarter.
What a Kick – In his very first attempt as a collegiate kicker, walk-on freshman
Thomas Moreland split the uprights on a 29-yard attempt in the third quarter against
Oklahoma. The kicking duties had been up for grabs during fall practice with three true
freshman walk-ons battling it out before Moreland secured the job.
Ford One of Youngest – North Texas offensive coordinator Todd Ford is the fourthyoungest offensive coordinator in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly
Div. I-A). Ford was born on March 28, 1973 making him 34 years old during the 2007
season. Only Major Applewhite (29) of Alabama, Brian Harsin (30) of Boise State and
Mark Helfrich (33) of Colorado are younger in the OC ranks. Among both offensive
and defensive coordinators, Ford ranks as the 10th-youngest in the Football Bowl
Subdivision.
Thomas Eyeing Record – Senior running back Jamario Thomas currently ranks third
on the North Texas career rushing leaders list. Thomas has 2,834 yards and needs just
286 yards to move into second place. To break the record of 3,050 career yards, which
is held by his former teammate Patrick Cobbs, Thomas will need 1,217 yards. In Todd
Dodge’s wide open offense at Southlake Carroll, he had a 1,500-yard rusher in each of
his last three years.

Mean Green Defensive Notes
Spencer Shines – Junior all-conference punter Truman Spencer turned in his usual superior
performance in the season-opener against Oklahoma. Spencer had 10 punts and averaged
41.2 yards per punt which ranks second in the Sun Belt Conference after the first week.
Spencer had a long punt of 53 yards against the Sooners and downed one punt inside the
opponent 20-yard line. He has now gone six straight games (33 straight attempts) without
booting a punt into the end zone for a touchback
Weathering the Storm – Senior safety Aaron Weather led the team in tackles against
Oklahoma which is the 10th time in 23 games that he has led the team in tackles. Weathers
had nine stops against the Sooners and now has 200 career tackles which leads all current
North Texas players.
Looking for a Three-Peat – Aaron Weathers is looking to become the only Mean Green
player in history to lead the team in tackles for three consecutive seasons. Weathers led the
team with 113 tackles in 2005 and 78 last season. He becomes only the seventh player to
lead their team in consecutive seasons since North Texas starting keeping tackles as a stat in
1977. Of the seven total, Weathers is the only defensive back.
Lack of Sacks – North Texas faced one of the best offensive lines in the nation last week
against Oklahoma and failed to record any quarterback sacks. The Mean Green is the only
Sun Belt Conference team that didn’t have at least one quarterback sack in the opening
week. Dating back to last year, North Texas has now gone three straight games without a
sack with the last one coming against Louisiana-Lafayette in the 10th game of 2006.
Stopping Big Plays – The Mean Green defense will have to improve its performance from
last week when it allowed Oklahoma to average a record, 9.1 yards per play. That average
broke the North Texas record for average yards per play allowed in a game, which was
previously set when LSU averaged 8.8 yards per play against the Mean Green in 2005. In
all, North Texas gave up 15 plays of more than 20 yards against the Sooners.
Make Them Earn It – Against Oklahoma last week, the North Texas defense did not do
good job of making the Sooners earn their touchdowns with long sustained scoring drives.
Of the 11 touchdown drives by Oklahoma, eight came on five plays or less and took less
than two minutes. Only one of the 11 touchdown drives by the Sooners lasted more than
eight plays and that one covered 12 plays and took 4:43 off the game clock.
Off-season Movement – There has been several position changes defensively for North
Texas leading up to the season opener. Junior Steve Warren has moved from safety to
linebacker which was complimented by the move of junior Germaine Dawson from
linebacker to safety. Sophomore Desmon Chatman moved from cornerback to safety and
is very close to cracking the two-deep. Former tight-ends Charlie Brown, Ryan Davenport,
Draylen Ross and Bryant Seidle all found homes on the defensive side of the ball. Brown
and Davenport are playing defensive end while Ross is a defensive tackle and Seidle is a
linebacker.
‘Special’ for Two Seasons – The Mean Green special teams has gone 32 games without
allowing a blocked punt. The last time North Texas had a punt blocked was against Baylor,
Sept. 25, 2004. Junior punter Truman Spencer, has attempted 141 punts in his three-year
career without giving up a blocked punt. The last time the Mean Green team went a whole
season without allowing a blocked punt was 1996.
Wealth of Experience – North Texas returns nine starters from its 2006 defense. Twelve
of the top 13 tacklers, including the top eight tacklers, are back from last year. Defensive
tackle Sky Pruitt and defensive back Roy Loren are the only two starters from 2006 who
are not on the 2007 roster. Three of the four pre-season all-conference selections from
North Texas are on the defensive side of the ball. North Texas has 19 defensive players
on its current roster that have started at least one game while at North Texas. There are
seven different defensive backs, seven linebackers and five defensive linemen who have at
least one start. Nine of those players have started at least 10 games in their career, led by
defensive end Jeremiah Chapman who has 24 career starts. There are five linebackers with
at least 10 starts to their credit, led by Derek Mendoza and Maurice Holman who each have
22.

Texas Tech 49 vs. SMU 9
Last Meeting
Sept. 9, 2006
SMU 6 vs. North Texas 24
DENTON (9/9/06) – The North Texas football
team defeated SMU, 24-6, in the two teams’
first meeting since 1992 on Saturday night
at Fouts Field in front of crowd of 25, 231.
The two teams last met in 1990, resulting in a
28-14 win for SMU (0-2). The victory is the
program’s first home-opening win since 2003
over Baylor. The announced crowd of 25,231
is the third largest to watch a game at Fouts
Field. North Texas held an early 7-0 lead and
then outscored the Mustangs, 17-6 in the second half. Freshman Evan Robertson made the
big play on special teams, blocking an SMU
punt that led to the first score of the game.
The Mustangs had an opportunity to tie the
game at the start of the second half but failed
to convert the extra point after a touchdown
reception. Junior Jamario Thomas ran for 90
yards on 25 carries, including 81 rushing yards
in the second half. His five-yard touchdown
run sealed the 24-6 victory for the Mean
Green. The defense forced three turnovers,
including two in the fourth quarter. Sky Pruitt

DALLAS (AP) – Texas Tech redshirt
freshman Michael Crabtree had three
touchdown catches to lead the Red Raiders
past SMU, 49-9, Monday. Texas Tech
quarterback Graham Harrell went 44-of-59 for
419 yards with four TDs. He also scored on
a 1-yard dive. SMU, hoping to build off last
year’s 6-6 season, held in pretty well early. But
after Crabtree’s touchdown with two seconds
left in the second quarter forced them to take
a 21-3 deficit into halftime, they gained just
37 yards in the third quarter and seemed to
lose their momentum. SMU punted on its
first three drives of the second half, while
committing two turnovers. SMU broke the
skid with a 37-yard field goal from Thomas
Morstead, who shined with additional kicks of
35 and 36. Justin Willis, the Conference USA
freshman of the year last season, was 15-of-33
for 138 yards with two interceptions. He also
was SMU’s leading rusher with 40 yards.

North Texas 10 at Oklahoma 79
Norman, Okla. (9/1/07) – DeMarco Murray rushed for five
touchdowns to lead No. 8 Oklahoma football team to a 79-10
victory against North Texas in front of 84,472 at Gaylord Family
Oklahoma Memorial Stadium on Saturday night. The Mean Green
(0-1) lost its first game in the era of head coach Todd Dodge. North
Texas is now 36-53-3 in season openers and 0-7 in the series versus
Oklahoma. The Sooners start off their season, 1-0. Meager started
the game at quarterback and went 15-for-27 for 108 yards. Vizza relieved Meager in the third quarter and went 4-for-11 for 124 yards
and one touchdown. Oklahoma passed for 403 yards in the game,
compared to NT’s 232. North Texas’ first scoring drive of the game
came midway through the third quarter. After the Mean Green recovered a fumble on the North Texas 41-yard line, Vizza led North
Texas on a 47-yard drive. Thomas Moreland connected on his
first-ever field-goal attempt, a 29-yard kick. Vizza connected with
Casey Fitzgerald for a 69-yard touchdown reception at the start of
the fourth quarter. Fitzgerald caught a career-high seven catches for
126 yards. The Oklahoma Sooners needed only 32 seconds to get
on the scoreboard. The eighth-ranked football team went four plays
for 68 yards on its very first drive of the game, culminating with a
15-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Sam Bradford to wide
receiver Jermaine Gresham.
