Looking for something to
do as a family? We have
many suitable events that
are recommended.
New for 2013 we have a
fantastic range of BRASS
events organised by friends
of the festival.
“Festivals can be very niche
but BRASS has shown you
can have anything, from the
traditional to the innovative.
It’s very inclusive and that’s
the key to a great festival!
I love how it gives young
people something to aspire
to, as that’s the only way brass
playing is going to survive.”

This vibrant annual festival celebrates
the best of County Durham’s musical
tradition, pushing the boundaries of
brass music through a diverse line
up of acclaimed bands and artists,
theatrical outdoor performances,
creative collaborations and pioneering
education and community activities.
One of the highlights of the festival
is always the energetic street band
programme at Streets of BRASS –
a series of free events in Durham
City featuring a tremendous range
of street bands. This year, as well
as international favourites from
previous years we’ll be profiling and
celebrating the UK’s street band
scene during the opening weekend.
Outreach work is at the heart of
BRASS and in 2012 over 20,000
children and young people benefitted
from our education programme.
The ambition of the festival continues
to develop in this area with an
exciting new project with the
famous Roundhouse in London,
involving musicians from Durham
Music Service.

A very warm
welcome to
this year’s
BRASS
Events which are fun for families play a big part
in this year’s festival with Seaham, Spennymoor
and Stanley hosting free ‘Big BRASS Bash’
events and the ever popular Community Tour
continues, giving local people opportunities
to experience world class performances
from UK and international bands almost
on their doorstep.
The role of culture is vitally important in these
economically straitened times and we’re
delighted to be developing and hosting such
a wide range of creatively rich and imaginative
festivals this year including TakeOff Festival,
Durham Book Festival and Lumiere. Additional
high profile sports events such as the Marie
Curie Cancer Care Etape Pennines and The
Ashes make 2013 a magnificent year for
culture in County Durham. I would like to thank
Arts Council England and our much valued
programme partners for their continued support
of County Durham’s arts festivals.
A huge thank you to everyone involved in the
festival for their unwavering energy, enthusiasm
and support and I hope to see you at a BRASS
event very soon.

Witness this captivating collaboration between
singer/songwriter Martin Longstaff and one of
the region’s leading traditional bands as they
perform original material that puts the traditions
of brass playing into a contemporary setting.
From Sunderland, Martin performs under the
name The Lake Poets and is swiftly building
a reputation for his delicately finger-picked
guitar playing and other-worldly vocals. He has
shared stages with some of the most revered
names in alternative acoustic, folk and indie
music including Ben Howard, Get Cape, Wear
Cape, Fly, The Futureheads and Jake Bugg.
Martin will be joined on the Gala stage by
Stanhope Silver Band to perform his new work
that draws inspiration from the band’s expertise
and traditional musical heritage.

A unique opportunity to see inside one
of Durham’s most iconic buildings, the
headquarters of Durham Miner’s Association,
provides a fitting setting for this special double
bill screening of two films that celebrate the
region’s rich mining heritage.
Will & Testament is the candid and deeply
personal documentary about the life of
charismatic socialist and Labour’s longest
serving MP Tony Benn, portrayed through
major UK events and upheavals.
The man behind the public face is revealed
through intimate interviews, photographic and
film archives. An exclusive 30 minute preview
of this film which is due for general release next
year will be followed by a personal appearance
of Tony Benn himself.
The Miners’ Hymns provides homage in film
and music to the coal mining communities of
North East England. A collaboration between
renowned American filmmaker Bill Morrison
and acclaimed Icelandic musician Johann
Johannsson The Miners’ Hymns weaves

BRASS:Pitch is a series of
newly commissioned works
selected from over 40 proposals
submitted by artists and
performers from across England.
Each work sets out to challenge our
perceptions and understanding of
brass music, either through exploring
its historical and contemporary social
contexts or expanding the boundaries
of the genre by creating new forms of
music production.
Unique creative collaborations have
produced some delightfully unusual
and engaging work which we hope
will capture people’s imagination.

Performed between street band performances
this quirky piece of music theatre will both
surprise and delight.
On a quiet afternoon high up in their bedroom
with only their trumpet for company, a lone
musician muses on their life… but surprises
are in store for them, and for those in the street
below… things are not always as they seem!
Lucid Incident brings Brass Windows to
Durham, melding Eastern European folk with
British brass band traditions to transform the
street into a ‘cuckoo clock’ world which we
all become part of in a celebratory piece of
music theatre.

We invite you to search for the story
of the Lindisfarne Gospels through
this site-specific sound installation by
award-winning composer and sound
artist John Kefala Kerr.
This work blends bell and brass
recordings (including the Cathedral’s
own) to sculpt a sonic and cultural
resonance with the Gospels Book to
evoke its status as historical artefact,
living text and calligraphic work.
Become part of the piece by locating
extracts from the library’s texts and
ringing a series of hand bells on
completion of each search.

Visit this historic space and witness
as a drop of water falls from the
rafters into a brass jam pan. The pan
rings out: this sound in turn activates
the room itself: the space resounds
back. And just as that happens,
another drop falls elsewhere in the
room, then another, and another...
Created by sound and visual duo
louie+jesse, this immersive sitespecific installation uses a makeshift
ensemble of everyday household
brass objects to create a subtle music
composition exploring the connection
between sound and architecture.

“Everything is what it is and not
another thing.” Joseph Butler
Prince Bishop of Durham 1750-1752
Inspired by the power of the crown and the
cloak wielded by the Prince Bishops of Durham,
Irish composer and writer Ailis Ní Ríain and
visual artist Nicola Dale combine trumpet, text
and sculpture in an installation that re-interprets
an unusual time in County Durham’s history,
when it was virtually an independent state,
ruled not by a monarch but by powerful
Prince Bishops.
Reflect on how cultural traditions inform our
sense of place and personal identity through
this film installation which brings together
the formerly industrial colliery landscapes of
Murton, Easington and Felling with the music
of their enduring brass bands.
In this context, brass music represents a
continuing cultural tradition in a time of deep
economic and social shifts within the North East
of England, with Fintan’s short films aiming to
open up a discussion as to what relevance and
meaning these traditions hold for us today.
