Shoin Yoshida's private academy. It was started by his uncle,
Bunnoshin Tamaki, first. Although Shoin taught here only for
two and half years, he inspired his students and many of them
played important roles in the Meiji Restoration and became
politicians of the new government.

Kubota Family Old Residence
The beginning of Kubota family was when
the first owner Shoshichi Kubota moved to
Hagi from Ohmi.Their family business was a
Kimono merchant and the Sake-brewing
industry. The house was built in the late Edo
era.The main house had a mezzanine floor in
the attic for stocks and employees.
Hagi Castle Town
(National Historic Site)
Kaimagari
Takayoshi Kido, one of Shoin's students, was
one of the leaders of the Meiji Restoration. He
was born in 1833 as the first son of Shoukei
Wada, a clan doctor, but was later adopted by
the Katsura family so he is known as Kogoro
Katsura. Notice the two entrances, which are
for the guests and family members. Old
garden style and other small rooms can be
seen as well as the room where he was born.
It is checkered with streets
and alleys. The samurai houses
and other town houses built in
the Edo era are preserved so
well that the map of Edo era
can still used now. There are
three main lanes called "Kikuya Lane", "Iseya Lane", and
"Edoya Lane" where unique black and white walls called
"Namako-bei" (sea cucumber wall), gates, and mud walls can
be seen.
The Aiba Waterway was originally used
as water for living and fire prevention,
and later on was used to transport
materials such as firewood. The lower
platforms in the houses where women did
dishes and washing are called "Hatoba".
Daishoin, a temple of
the Rinzai-shu school,
was rebuilt by Tsunahiro
Mori, the second lord of
the Mori clan.
The grave stones of the
first and following evennumbered, until the
twelfth, lords of the clan and their wives are
situated here.
More than six hundred stone lanterns were
donated by other samurai of the clan.
(a tricky corner)
It has very high
walls on both
sides, and the
corner is angled
like a key. It
was built in case
of enemy attacks.
Tokoji Temple
(National Cultural Property of Importance)
It was built in 1691 and is one of
the greatest temples of the Obakuschool in Japan. The graves of the
third and following odd-numbered
(until the eleventh) Mori lords and
their wives lie here, and more than
five hundred stone lanterns donated
by other samurai of the clan.

It is checkered with streets
and alleys. The samurai houses
and other town houses built in
the Edo era are preserved so
well that the map of Edo era
can still used now. There are
three main lanes called "Kikuya Lane", "Iseya Lane", and
"Edoya Lane" where unique black and white walls called
"Namako-bei" (sea cucumber wall), gates, and mud walls can
be seen.
