Celebrates 40 Years of Service in the
Finger Lakes Community!
Former students, consumers, families,
board members, and employees attended
Happiness House’s 40th anniversary picnic
celebration. Kite flying, a bounce house,
popcorn, and sno-cones were among the
highlights of the afternoon, held at John
Brown Memorial Park in Clifton Springs.
Happiness House’s Traumatic Brain
Injury (TBI) Program Celebrates
National Brain Injury Awareness
Month
Throughout the month of March an art
exhibit was on display showcasing photographs by the TBI digital photography club
at the Ontario County Arts Council Building
“All Things Art”. Friends, family, and others
learned what life is like through their eyes
when dealing with a traumatic brain injury.
Opening night featured “ ‘Through Our
Eyes’: Life with a Traumatic Brain Injury”, a
documentary film created by Happiness
House’s TBI awareness group.

40 Years of Excellence
at Happiness House
In the late 60’s a young father living in
Geneva was told that his 1½-year-old
daughter had cerebral palsy. This father had no idea what could be done
to help his little girl. The girl’s physician instructed him to give her a football helmet and forget about her condition. Her father didn’t know where
to turn. Through an article placed in
the Geneva Times, volunteers stepped
forward to create the Finger Lakes
Committee of United Cerebral Palsy.
They soon learned that there were
many children with cerebral palsy
in the area and, thanks to help from
the New York State Elks Club and the
Women’s Club of Geneva, money was
raised to open Happiness House’s first
childcare center in a house on North
Street in Geneva, serving five children
with developmental disabilities.
Over the past 40 years, Happiness
House has provided services to several thousand children and adults with
and without disabilities. With sites in
Canandaigua, Geneva, Gorham, and
Waterloo, Happiness House offers
an array of educational, therapeutic,
recreational, residential and family
support programs and services.
Our staff consists of dedicated and
knowledgeable professionals and clinicians who have expertise in the areas
of Special Education, Early Childhood
Education, Occupational, Physical,
Speech, & Music Therapy, Psychology,
Service Coordination, Nursing, and
Developmental Disabilities.
Committed to serving individuals
with autism, traumatic brain injury,
neurological impairments, as well as
a wide variety of developmental disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy and
Down Syndrome, our staff partners
with individuals and their families to
support them in meeting their goals.
March 1966 - Our First Home
Our first class was held in a
little white house on the
corner of North and Mason Streets. We quickly
outgrew this location and rented two additional
rooms at a local church.

Looking Back & Moving Forward
by Mary Walsh Boatfield
Chief Executive Officer
As we celebrate 40 years of enriching the lives of individuals
in our communities, it is a time to reflect on the past and
prepare for our future. Our first little house on the corner of North
& Mason was home to five children just three days a week. Responding to the
needs of families in the Finger Lakes community, we have grown to provide the
highest quality integrated programs and services to children and adults with and
without disabilities who live in Ontario, Seneca, Wayne, and Yates Counties.
Happiness House now serves 1,000 families annually. We have many individuals to thank for our growth & success throughout the years. Guided by the leadership of a very committed Board of Directors, Happiness House has developed &
launched a five year road map for our organization. Although a new Happiness
House logo has been unveiled, our foundational principles of equal opportunity,
independence and the realization of individual potential continue to be the cornerstone of who we are and what we do. As we forge ahead toward new endeavors, be assured that Happiness House’s commitment to our mission and vision
will remain a constant. Happiness House truly believes that “What Happens Here
Changes Lives Forever,” and it will be our privilege to continue to enrich the lives
of those we serve.
We are pleased to announce the creation & incorporation of the Happiness
House Foundation, launched to ensure that resources will be available for all who
need our services. Many thanks to all of the board members who have assisted us
in the development of this organization. Please join us in our anniversary celebration on October 23rd at the Ramada
Geneva Lakefront. Be sure to watch your mail for more details, or log on to our
website at www.happinesshouse.org.
Our Happiness House Board Chairman,
Kevin W. Reeder
Kevin W. Reeder received his B.S. in Hotel Administration at
Cornell University. The owner of Belhurst, he has served on
several boards including the Geneva Family YMCA, Smith
Opera House, and Finger Lakes Visitors Connection. He has
also been a past board member and chair of the Geneva Chamber of Commerce.
He currently serves on the board of the Salvation Army, and will chair the Happiness House Board of Directors for the 2009-2011 term.

JOHN P. CLARY MEMORIAL AWARD
The Happiness House Adult Structured Day Program (SDP) recognizes the hard work and perseverance necessary to overcome a serious
Traumatic Brain Injury. John Clary was one of those special people.
John was a young man who had been diagnosed with a terminal brain
tumor. Yet, he exhibited an incredible sense of humor and energy for
life. John’s willingness to get up each day and make the most of his opportunities was inspirational to everyone who met him.

Jim Daly
John passed away several years ago. Each year,
we proudly honor his memory by bestowing the
“John P. Clary Award” upon the consumer who
consistently displays the characteristics that made
John such a special person. These characteristics
include; demonstrating a good work ethic, having
good attendance, possessing a sense of humor,
and being caring, outgoing, and friendly
toward others.
John set an example for all of us to aspire to. He
demonstrated a wonderful sense of humor,
genuine concern for others, a curiosity to learn and
explore his world, and a fantastic commitment to
get the most out of everything he undertook. Our
most recent award recipients are Jim Daly and
Melissa Power. We are grateful for their
perseverance and “thumbs up” attitude toward life.
Melissa Power
Jim continues to be a great role model for his peers, working hard at
the SDP and in therapy. He advocates for himself & for others and always has a smile on his face. Jim is a member of the Photography Club
and the Protect-A-Head project.
Melissa is very thoughtful of others and has many friends at the SDP.
She has a wonderful sense of humor and a great smile. A good role
model to the young members of the SDP, she uses her positive energy
and outgoing spirit to make her day and other’s days at program special.
Melissa enjoys being at program and always makes the best of every
day.

Happiness House’s programs and services.
From our Chairman, Charles T. Graham...
Happiness House has just successfully completed a
major endeavor - more than 600 individuals invested in
us and our future through our Capital Campaign.
As a result of this great accomplishment, and the
support that continues to follow, I am pleased to announce that Happiness House has incorporated the Happiness House
Foundation. A not for profit organization, Happiness House Foundation has been established to raise and generate funds that will promote, support, and augment the continuation of long term services
for people with disabilities offered by Happiness House in Ontario,
Seneca, Yates, and Wayne Counties. These funds will directly support
Happiness House programs and services.
With the development of the Foundation and the upcoming
celebration of our 40th year of service to the community, we have created a fresh look for Happiness House, including a new logo and new
colors. I am also pleased to announce that our new website has been

Our Latest Endeavor...
We have built a brand new state-of-the-art facility located at 5415 County
Road 30 in Canandaigua where preschool services and programs for adults
with traumatic brain injury are located. Our Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
Program is the largest day program funded through the Department of
Health in New York State.
The TBI consumers and preschool students would appreciate having a
semi-enclosed area to hold social activities. Currently, the adult consumers and preschoolers go to an outside area which has chairs and tables that
rest on a slab of concrete and the addition of a pavilion would only serve to
enhance the utilization of this area. This project would provide them with a
sense of belonging, and would put the biggest and brightest smiles on their
faces for helping to make a dream come true.
We are asking you to support us in accomplishing this great task of enriching the lives of more than 200 children & adults receiving center-based
educational and therapy services in the Canandaigua area.
