Student Graduation Speaker Finds
His Passion and a New Career
The graduate nominated by faculty and selected by the Graduation Committee to represent their class and speak at the
May 10 commencement is Ben Bisland. Ben will receive his Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
W
hen Ben Bisland’s mother suggested he would make a good nurse, the then-15-year-old
was unsure. Instead, he followed in the footsteps of his father and went into construction
and ultimately started his own construction company. As a contractor, the last two renovation
projects Ben completed involved a home healthcare and hospice facilities. That experience
became the turning point in his career. He realized his mother’s vision had now become his
passion. He wanted to make a difference.
With the encouragement of his girlfriend, Danielle Jaramillo, Ben took the placement tests
at San Juan College to help him determine if the field of nursing was a good fit for him. In spite
of suggestions from others that he go into a vocational field, Ben opted to follow his dream
and applied to the School of Nursing. When the letter of acceptance arrived in the mail, Ben
was faced with major decisions. Knowing it would be difficult to work full time and take college
classes, Ben opted to try that for the first year. He ultimately decided that putting his entire focus
on his education and his career was a priority.
Eager to learn and wanting to absorb everything he could about nursing, Ben found
mentors in his professors. “Marsha Brouchard was a nursing instructor and said, ‘she saw the
nurse in me,’” he said. “She gave me so much confidence because of her belief in me. Bonnie
Rung, who has retired from the nursing department, helped me with some personal challenges
and gave me counsel and direction. And Beth Carter, a certified midwife who now works at

San Juan Regional Medical Center, was a true inspiration with her lectures and her passion for
teaching. It’s inspiring to be around people who truly love what they do.”
“Faculty are a huge part of the curriculum,” Ben said, adding that the partnership between
San Juan College and San Juan Regional Medical Center help make the college’s nursing program
one of the best. “It’s an amazing partnership,” he said, “and to be able to take what I learned
academically and take it to the street is a blessing.”
Ben will continue his education at New Mexico State University on a scholarship awarded to
him by Phi Theta Kappa, where he will work toward his bachelor’s degree. His ultimate goal is to
fly high, however. “My goal is to be a flight nurse,” he said. “I love aviation and I love nursing,
and it would be great to combine the two.”
The path from construction to that of a flight nurse hasn’t been an easy one for Ben.
“Returning to school at age 30 was extremely tough,” he admitted. “It was scary for a full grown
man in his 30s, and I had a lot of questions about my capabilities of doing it. But I made the
sacrifices all college students make (to get a degree).”
“I feel a new sense of purpose now, in my community and my family,” he said. I believe now
I can become a viable resource in my community.”

PRESIDENT
Success. Commencement exemplifies the meaning of the
word. Seeing our graduates beam with excitement from their
accomplishments and the pride and joy that is shared by their
family and friends is one of the most rewarding aspects of
being the president of our wonderful college.
I’m proud of each of our students. I applaud the hard
work and dedication that has led them to this milestone. Their
accomplishments will no doubt continue to have a positive
effect on their lives and future. Sharing in this celebration
provides us the opportunity to remember why our students’
success is at the heart of all that we do at San Juan College,
and we take this seriously.
Over the past year, we have worked strategically on
initiatives to improve processes and resources that will
continue to support student success. For example, we have
implemented a three-credit hour Student Success class that
provides first-time students with the tools and skills needed
to succeed, not only in a college environment, but in life.
Based on the nationally recognized On Course
program developed by Skip Downing, students learn
eight key principles that will enhance their ability to reach
their academic and life goals – from discovering selfmotivation and employing interdependence, to accepting
self-responsibility and gaining self-awareness. Students taking
the class are gaining a competitive edge that will serve as a
foundation throughout their educational journey – and their lives.
Life’s challenges can at times create barriers to
learning, but peer mentors and achievement coaches from
our Student Achievement Center help students connect
with college and community resources that can assist with
transportation, childcare, housing or food. Student barriers
are identified early in our new student orientation, so we can
provide help before these barriers trump a student’s chance
for academic success.
Whether students are gaining a new skill set, completing
their first class or graduating with a certificate or degree –
we consider each of these a true success. We share in their
success today, their goals for tomorrow and their vision for
the future. This remains at the heart of all we do.

Lt. Governor John Sanchez to speak at
San Juan College Graduation Ceremonies
N
ew Mexico Lt. Governor John Sanchez will be the
keynote speaker at San Juan College’s graduation
ceremonies on Saturday, May 10.
Lt. Governor Sanchez was elected November 2,
2010, by the citizens of the State of New Mexico. He was
born and raised in Albuquerque, and can trace his public
service roots to his great, great grandfather, who was a
territorial legislator from San Miguel County in 1860.
Lt. Governor Sanchez was previously elected to the
office of Councilman for the Village of Los Ranchos and
also served in the New Mexico House of Representatives.
In 2005, Lt. Governor Sanchez was recognized as one of
the Top 40 Most Influential Hispanics in the country and,
in 2013, he was named to Governing Magazine’s list of
“State Republican Officials to Watch in 2013.”
Lt. Governor Sanchez serves on several boards and
commissions, including the State Board of Finance, the
Military Base Planning Commission, the Mortgage Finance
Authority, the Spaceport Authority, and the Community
Development Council. He is also an active member of the
National Lieutenant Governors Association and currently
serves as the West Regional Chairman and Chairman of
the International Committee.
Lt. Governor Sanchez is a strong supporter of
education and San Juan College. “The future of New
Mexico is emerging powerfully from the classrooms of
San Juan College,” he said. “I believe the future of our
state is bright, and I thank our New Mexico colleges and
universities for helping ensure that today’s students are
prepared for the rising opportunities of tomorrow.”
Lt. Governor Sanchez and his wife, Debra, are the
proud parents of two grown daughters and reside in
Albuquerque.
Lt. Governor John Sanchez
Students Nominated for
All USA Academic Team
S
an Juan College students Seve Tom and Ben Bisland
were recognized for their nomination to the 2104
New Mexico All-State and All-USA Academic Teams during a
ceremony January 29 in Santa Fe during the state legislative session.
Seve Tom was working at a variety of jobs before
the economy took a hit, and he was laid off. In 2012, Tom
enrolled at San Juan College and will receive his Associate of
Applied Science degree as a Medical Laboratory Technician
during graduation ceremonies in May.
“I was inspired by the professors at San Juan College,
who pushed me further than I could have done by myself, and
I’m grateful for them,” Tom said. “When my daughter, Seri,
2
was born, I wanted to set an example for her by finishing my
education.”
The first in his family to obtain a degree, Tom plans to
continue his education at the University of New Mexico, and,
ultimately, hopes to do medical research.
Ben Bisland was inspired and motivated by his girlfriend,
Danielle Jaramillo, to get his degree in nursing. In the fall of
2010, he left his own construction company and enrolled at
San Juan College.
He also credits his instructors for encouraging him
throughout his educational journey. “They believed in me
and were always right there to inspire, guide and direct me –
especially in the challenging times,” he said.

He is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, was named to
the National Society of Leadership and Success, and was
nominated to serve as the student speaker at the 2014

IN THE COMMUNITY
Kids Kollege
T
hey’re called things like “Messy, Messy Art,” “Math Maniacs,” “Pinteresting Preschool,”
and “Science of Cooking.”
They’re some of the classes that will be offered at the Kids Kollege, which begins June 9 and
runs through August 1 at San Juan College.
There will be 200 such classes, for students ages 4-16, that will focus on a theme of “Super
Summer.” The mission of Kids Kollege is to “provide young people with exciting learning opportunities that allow students to explore, expand and experience areas of interest,” explains Liesl
Dees, director of the Community Learning Center at San Juan College.
“We hope that all of our classes provide exciting learning
opportunities and incorporate fun, which is perfect for learning in the summer,” Dees adds.
Kids Kollege offers a wide variety of classes and, this
year, offers additional classes for the pre-teen age group.
“We love to see kids enjoy learning in a fun and educational environment,” says Lucy Haber, assistant director of
the Community Learning Center.
Most classes for ages 4-11 meet from 1-2:50 p.m.
and from 3:10-5 p.m. at the main campus, with trained runners moving students between the classes. Kids Kollege Kamps
for various ages and for ages 12-15 meet in the mornings, which
include some off-campus classes. Classes range from free to
between $39-$129.
Kids may be registered at the Community Learning
Center (Room 1911 in the West Classroom Complex) or online. A parent or guardian must sign a waiver, provide the
child’s Social Security number or your San Juan College ID
number for registration.
For more information, to register online, or to see
a class schedule, go to www.sanjuancollege.edu/

San Juan College Hosts Summer
Music Festival 2014, Bringing
World Music to the High Desert
J
The Jackie Greene Band
La Santa Cecilia
am-out this summer with rockin’ music when San Juan College hosts Summer Music Festival 2014, Bringing World Music to the
High Desert.
The second annual event promises a star-studded lineup including La Santa Cecilia, The Jackie Greene Band and Sihasin.
Fresh off their 2014 Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock Album of the Year, La Santa Cecilia brings an upbeat hybrid of Latin
rhythms. Their influences range from Miles Davis to The Beatles, Zepplin to Janis Joplin and Mercedes Sosa to Ramon Ayala.
The Jackie Greene Band brings years of performing experience alongside world renowned artists such as B.B. King, Taj Majal,
Government Mule, and The Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh. In 2013, he joined the Black Crowes on their world tour
and was selected as an official member of the Crowes. In 2014, Jackie refocused on his solo career and is now touring once again
with the The Jackie Greene Band and working on an upcoming new solo album.
Another headlining group at the 2014 Summer Music Festival is Sihasin, from Flagstaff, Arizona, a native, rock, punk, world
music, brother and sister duo that has found critical acclaim with their new album, Never Surrender. In 2013, Sihasin won the Best
Rock category at the Indian Summer Music Awards.
The festival will be held Saturday, June 21, in the Learning Commons Plaza at
San Juan College’s Farmington campus. The festival is a family friendly event with a
children’s area and kid’s activities 2 to 6 p.m. Opening at 2 p.m., the festival will kick
off with San Juan College’s Super Rock Combo, led by Dr. Keith Cochrane. Food and
drinks will be available to purchase at the festival.
Advanced ticket prices for the Summer Music Festival are available through
June 20. Advanced tickets are $6 for students with student ID, seniors 60-plus,
and children 13-17; $8 for San Juan College staff and faculty; and $11 for general
admission. Children, ages 0-12, are free with the purchase of an adult ticket.
The day of the event, tickets are $10 for students with a student ID, seniors
60-plus, and children 13-17; $12 for San Juan College staff and faculty; and $15 for
general admission.
Vendor booths are available for all non-food vendors. For more information
about booth availability, tickets or general information about the event, call the
Student Activities office at 505-566-3403, visit the website at www.sanjuancollege.
