Sweet Dreams
Getting a good night’s sleep can be difficult for seniors but not impossible
We’ve heard it for years – get a good night’s sleep and
you’ll feel better in the morning. The fact is that seniors need
as much sleep as young adults. Most people require seven
to nine hours of sleep no matter what decade of life they
are in but many of us fall short of this number.
According to the National Sleep
Foundation nearly 44 percent of
seniors experience insomnia—a
condition that can increase the
risk of falls and can lead to other
health issues. The good news is
that there are ways to get a better
night’s sleep. Knowing the causes of
insomnia can be the first step in getting
more healthful rest.
Oftentimes, there are reasons why sleep can be
difficult especially for seniors:
Illness: Health problems like heart failure, Alzheimer’s,
arthritis, or an enlarged prostate can make it harder to fall
asleep, especially if you feel uncomfortable while in bed.
Less serious conditions (like restless leg syndrome) can also
affect how easily the person falls or stays asleep.
Medications: Certain prescription and over-the-counter
drugs can lead to difficulty falling and staying asleep.
Napping: A change in body clock occurs during the
later years of life, causing people to both go to bed and rise
earlier. This can make us more tired in the afternoon and
napping too much to ease this fatigue can backfire, making
it harder to fall asleep come bedtime and ultimately leading
to less total sleep.
Less Exercise: A decline in physical activity after
retirement can interfere with the body’s sleep/wake schedule.
Snoring: Loud, excessive snoring can disturb both the
snorer and the non-snoring sleeping partner. What’s even
more alarming is that it can also be a sign of sleep apnea, a
serious sleep problem that can lead to an increased risk of
heart disease, memory loss, and depression.
While some of these contributing factors are unavoidable,
others can be controlled or modified to make sleep easier
and more restful. Always talk to your doctor to see if any of
the above conditions are making you lose sleep. By working
with your doctor, you can create the best conditions for
getting a good night’s sleep. Before long, instead of lying
awake all night, you’ll be having sweet dreams – and better
health.
Learn more about the sleep pattern changes we
experience and what can be done about them this month
at our Dinner with a Doc featuring Dr. Jessica Shreve and
Dr. Michael Morehead.

A few words from Joyce...
May is Older Americans Month—a time to recognize
older adults for their contributions and provide them with
information to help them stay healthy and active. For
most of us, the warmer spring weather increases our
desire to be more active. Our members should have
no problem finding something to do in this newsletter.
The upcoming Mid-Ohio Valley Senior Expo allows area
seniors to have access to valuable information and
resources in our community, as well as reduced-cost
health screenings. Our “Dinner with a Doc” series will
offer two more education sessions before taking off the
summer months. Please note that the June dinner is
taking place at the Belpre Senior Center. And don’t
miss an opportunity to find out what Camden Clark’s
Health & Wellness Center has to offer at the National
Senior Health & Fitness Day Open House on Wednesday,
May 25.
Thanks to our members for your continued support of
our program. We always encourage your comments and
suggestions by calling (304) 424-2055 or (866) 891-2055.

A Simple Test Can
Save Your Life
Vascular disease can be a silent killer with little
or no symptoms and can strike without warning.
A few simple tests can determine if you are at risk.
Early detection can help identify and treat potentially
debilitating or deadly vascular conditions and
protect your health.
• Reduced-cost vascular screenings (only $60) will
be offered the second Friday of each month at
Camden Clark. Screenings include Ultrasound of
the Aorta to detect aneurysms, Ultrasound of the
Carotid Arteries to detect blockages that can lead
to stroke, and Ankle-Brachial Index to assess leg
circulation.
• Participants in the screening will also be eligible for
low-cost ($25) lab work including tests for CBC,
CMP, TSH, and lipid profile.
The next screening will be held on
Friday, May 13. To schedule an
appointment or
for more information, call 304-424-2094.

Did you know that cardiovascular disease accounts for 1 of every 3 deaths in the
United States and half of these cases will occur before hospital arrival?
A heart attack is damage to the heart that is not reversible and is caused by hardening of the artery wall or a blood clot
in the artery of your heart. Some risk factors for a heart attack include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and
stress. All of these risk factors can be prevented or controlled to reduce your risk of a heart attack. See your doctor on a
regular basis to help prevent, reduce or manage these risk factors.
It is important to recognize the early warning signs of a heart attack. These signs include:
• Any type of chest discomfort
• Chest discomfort or pain that radiates to your back, neck, jaw, or arms
• Chest discomfort with shortness of breath
• Chest discomfort with sweating
• Heartburn or indigestion that is not alleviated with antacids
If you experience any of these symptoms you need to call 9-1-1 or
your local Emergency Medical Service provider for help.

IMPROVING PATIENT FLOW:
Camden Clark’s Emergency Department changing the face of emergency medicine
The Emergency Department is often referred to
as a hospital’s front door. Because of that, Camden
Clark is building a bigger and better Emergency
Department. The new Emergency Department
design was developed in a collaborative effort
with Pickering Associates, CCMC staff and
administration to create an attractive, state-of-theart, highly functional addition to a hospital that has a
long tradition of serving the Mid-Ohio Valley.
The 24,000-square-foot Emergency Department
will have 44 beds and an internal waiting room.
The building will replace the hospital’s existing
emergency room facility, and is expected to open
fall of 2016.
Two years ago, the Emergency Department
switched to a split flow process to increase efficiency
and provide a faster visit for patients. While the split
flow process model is difficult to implement in an
existing ER, Camden Clark was successful and
has become a “best practice” with nine facilities in
Kentucky and Western Tennessee following suit. The
new building, combined with the split flow process,
will help meet the increasing need in the region for
prompt and advanced emergency care.
Senior Expo Promotes
Education and Wellness
Area seniors will not want to miss this year’s Mid-Ohio
Valley Senior Expo on Tuesday, May 24, at the Grand
Pointe Conference Center, 1500 Grand Central Avenue (in
front of Lowe’s). This location provides plenty of easy-access
parking. This year’s event will
begin at 8:00 a.m. Vendor
booths will be open until
1:00 p.m., and you can enjoy
Bingo from 1:00-2:00 p.m.
The Expo is co-sponsored
by Camden Clark Medical
Center and Memorial Health
System.
Each year, this event
provides a wonderful
opportunity for those
attending to learn valuable
information from businesses
and organizations that offer services and products of interest
to the senior population. Planned activities include a healthy
cooking demonstration at 9:30 a.m., as well as a chair
exercise demonstration at 11:00 a.m. And, our new game
show with representatives from area senior centers at noon!
To learn more about Camden Clark’s Emergency
Department, please join Dr. Brian Richardson on
Monday, June 27 at the Belpre Senior Center.

Keep on
Walking....
Walking is one of the simplest and easiest ways
to get the exercise you need—and almost anyone
can do it! Our SoleMates Walking Club provides a
wonderful opportunity to stay active in the secure, level,
temperature-controlled environment of Grand Central
Mall. Members log miles walked and work toward
different levels and incentives. New members can sign
up for SoleMates at our regular meeting on the first
Tuesday of each month in front of Belk’s inside the mall.
They will have their pictures taken for laminated photo
ID badges, which can be used to receive discounts at
a variety of mall stores.
Each month, SoleMates members are able to “Walk
with a Doc”—one of our hospital physicians or nurse
practitioners will walk with the group starting at 8:30
a.m. That same person will provide a brief presentation
on a topic of interest at 9:00 a.m. Those who are unable
to walk can still feel free to attend the meeting and hear
the presentation.
The physician for May will be Dr. Nik Shah; he will be
sharing information about skin cancer. Those wishing
to walk with Dr. Shah should meet in front of Belk’s by
8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 3. After walking laps of the
mall, we’ll arrive back in front of Belk’s at 9:00 a.m. for
our meeting. On Tuesday, June 7, Dr. Heather Irvin
will be walking with the group and sharing information
about screening guidelines.

Lifeline Offers
Multiple Options
Lifeline is an easy-to-use personal
emergency response system that
ensures older adults living at home get quick assistance
whenever it is needed. Lifeline works by pressing the
help button worn either as a pendant or as a wristband.
Within seconds, a response associate will respond,
assess the situation and summon the appropriate help,
whether it’s a neighbor, relative or emergency services.
The monthly fee for basic Lifeline service is $29.95
for those who use an automated payment method
(credit card or direct debit). There is an additional $2
fee for those who choose to pay by check.
For those wanting an added level of protection,
Lifeline with Auto Alert automatically places a call for
help if it detects a fall and the button hasn’t been pushed.
Auto Alert is designed to get fast access to help even if
you’re disoriented, immobilized, or unconscious. And
now, seniors can benefit from Lifeline’s leading medical
alert service even if they don’t have a home phone line.
For more information on how you or your loved one
can benefit from the extra security and independence
provided by any of these Lifeline products, please

FREE WATER CLASS
AVAILABLE TO MEMBERS
As seniors age, they often face what can be a
frustrating dilemma. On one hand, exercise can extend
their lifespan and improve quality of life. But, on the
other hand, many seniors are unable to do some forms
of exercise due to certain health issues. While water
exercise is a good alternative for all ages, the benefits
for older adults are even greater due to minimized stress
on joints. Additional benefits include increased muscle
strength as water provides resistance to muscles,
improved balance as the body remains upright in a
changing environment, and improved cardiovascular
system by elevating heart rate, as well as improved
flexibility and range of motion.
Lifetime Partners are able to take advantage of
one free water exercise class each week at Camden
Clark’s Health & Wellness Center. The free class is
offered on Fridays from 11 a.m.-noon. Other water
classes are available Monday through Friday for an
additional fee.

Spring AARP
Smart Driver
Classes Available
Our members continue to take advantage of the
AARP Smart Driver classes. This approved driver
improvement course helps seniors drive safely
as long as possible, and allows them to receive a
discount on auto insurance premiums with most
carriers. Participants hear presentations, watch
videos and take part in group discussions. There
are no driving tests or exams.
For those taking the class for the first time, an
8-hour class is required. Anyone that has completed
the 8-hour class in the last 3 years and 90 days can
take a 4-hour refresher class. As a graduate of either
class, you will receive a certificate of completion
that should be sent to your insurance carrier to
obtain the discount, which is good for three years.
Cost for both classes is $15 for AARP members and
$20 for non-members.
We have planned a four hour class in May and
an eight hour class in June. The June class is
scheduled on Saturday, which is especially nice for
those seniors who are still working. Please check
this issue’s calendar for specific dates, times and
locations. Enrollment is limited, so call early to
reserve your space!
