Winter/Spring 2016 Calendar & Newsletter letter from the president Hi friends, I am hoping everybody is having a Happy New Year and enjoying the wet weather we are having. Personally, I really enjoy the elements and what they have to offer. Around this time of year we tend to go within ourselves and hibernate. This is natural for all animals to do, and for those living in the woods, to conserve their body heat so they are renewed come springtime. By doing this they save energy and do all the great things they love to do. Let’s take this time to go within and reflect what we want to create in the future so we can all live a happier and healthier life. As you can see by our calendar, we have a lot of exciting activities ranging from the great outdoors with the Elephant Seals, to enjoying our year-round program of art classes. One thing we like to do every year is create pieces of art at Petroglyph’s Ceramic Lounge. This activity gives you a unique opportunity to paint a ceramic piece of your choosing that takes on a whole different look after it is glazed and comes out of the kiln. If you haven’t tried this activity yet, I encourage you to come and check it out. There are so many happy people in there whenever I cruise by the store. Also, sign up early for the Elephant Seal trips at Año Nuevo State Park. We can only offer 3 trips to Año Nuevo this year so if there is an overwhelming response, we might have to do a lottery system for seats. Hopefully you’ll get the chance to see the seals with us! At the end of the year in December, Shared Adventures was a part of a unique fundraising campaign called “Santa Cruz Gives”. This was put on by the Good Times and the Volunteer Center to match a grant by the David & Lucille Packard Foundation. The support we received from people like yourselves was overwhelming. We did better than I had ever anticipated. On Thursday January 14th, all 30 participating non-profits got together at the Santa Cruz Community Foundation to receive our total donations. I am delighted to announce that Shared Adventures came in 3rd place overall and raised $8,166.00! This is super exciting because a lot of the funds can make a huge difference to Our Shared Garden. The garden will be getting some much-needed renovations and we will be collaborating with veterans from local VA clinics who will do some volunteer projects at the garden to beautify it. Thanks to all those who donated as we look forward to doing this again next year. So check out what we have in store, put the calendar on your refrigerator so you won’t forget what’s happening, and all of us here at Shared Adventures look forward to seeing everyone come out and play!
