Don’t “Curb” Your
Plastic Bag Recycling

Many people think everything recyclable can go in a
curbside bin, including plastic bags. The truth is, bags
and films cause a huge problem in recycling centers
across the country. More and more, high-speed
mechanized sorting lines are tasked with separating
paper and plastic efficiently as material recovery
facilities (known as MRFs) try to capture as much value
from the recycling stream as possible. However, bags
and films don’t play nice in those systems.
The Monroe County facility uses advanced technology
including magnets, screens, and eddy currents (think
of the force that two magnets create, used to repel
objects) to separate, sort and process newspaper,
mixed paper, plastic containers, cardboard and glass,
which are then baled and shipped out for reuse.
However, this machinery is not made to process plastic
bags, which get caught and wrapped around circular,
rotating disc screens. This slows down the recycling
process, sometimes stopping the entire system. While
there, Jason witnessed several recycling center workers
at stopped/jammed conveyor lines, cutting out wads
of plastic bags/film that had wound around the disc
screens. (include picture). This is a very disruptive
occurrence that happens about 6 to 8 times per day
and can be avoided by simply bringing your recyclable
bags/film back to Wegmans.
It occurred to me that with all of our communication
in recent years about our efforts to increase plastic
bag recycling, we never really emphasized not to place
this material in your curbside collection. Also that
towns and counties as well as waste and recycling
haulers should be helping to educate their residential
customers about this issue. When we talk about bag
recycling throughout the year, we can help by reminding
folks as well.
For many years Wegmans has accepted clean and dry
plastic bags and wrapping for recycling, and we now
send all of that material to our bag manufacturer, where
it goes into making new grocery bags (40% of each bag
is made from the material you bring back). The How 2
Recycle logo appears on our plastic bags and produce
bags to let you know to bring them back, and
in the near future we will be rolling this logo
out on a few Wegmans Brand products
that have a recyclable film outer wrap—
we’ll let you know when that happens.
(Sigh)…..Recycling is complicated—sooner or later
we’ll have it “in the bag!”
