Cats & Lasers—Why They Go So Well Together

Many cats prefer toys that mimic the sounds,
textures or movements of prey.
Many cat toys on the market are designed to
move, vibrate, twitter, squeak or swing. These
features simulate "prey" actions, encouraging a
cat to react and play.
Some cats enjoy natural substrates such as
leather, fur or feathers; however, some cats prefer fabric or substrates that crinkle, like plastic or
foil.
Some kitties like cat toys with no sound whatsoever, while others enjoy toys that squeak, twitter, chip or crackle.

Cats Like?
This is the appeal of the laser.
Having a variety of different toys is a good idea
because the variety will help keep your cat
stimulated. I recently tested a cat toy called the
BOLT and loved it. It is a uniquely designed laser
toy that really gets cats going. You can set this
toy to "automatic" mode to generate a fun-filled
play session for your cat while you are multitasking! The toy shuts itself off automatically after 15 minutes. You can also put the BOLT laser
toy in manual mode and control the motion yourself. Either way, it drives cats crazy.

Cat Scratches
Cat-scratch Disease (CSD), is an infection in
humans that most often occurs after prolonged contact with a young cat. When diagnosed in cats this disease is called feline
bartonellosis. It is caused by a bacteria
called Bartonella henselae.
All ages, breeds, and sexes of cat are susceptible; however, kittens under one year of
age, kittens or cats infested with fleas, and
feral cats or former strays are more likely to
have the bacteria in their bloodstream. Fleas
are believed to play a major role in cat-to-cat
and possibly cat-to-human transmission.
Cats can be infected with the organism for
months, or even years, and never show any
clinical signs.
There is no home care for bartonellosis. Preventive care is based on maintaining good
hygiene. Wash your hands after handling
pets and wash scratches or bites thoroughly.
Never let a cat lick an open wound, and
maintain meticulous flea control.

The closing of another year with the beginning of a new one on the horizon. As you can see from this issue the Maine Coons continue to have much success in the showhalls. I'd like to thank all the individuals
who helped contributed with all the beautiful photos to honor these cats.
Unfortunately this is the next to last issue provided by our editor, Liz Hansen. Liz has done a fabulous job
getting articles, laying out and getting the issues out in a timely manner. This is a big job for one person
and I, along with the membership greatly appreciate the time she has provided fr us with this informative
magazine. Starting with 2010 issues, the Scratch Sheet will be co-edited by Holly Reilly and Kit
Mounger. Lets welcome them and keep them busy with articles and photos for upcoming year.
Its that time again. Upcoming elections. If you are interested in any office, please contact our secretary,
Laura Heinick by February 15th to declare. Elections will be held in May 2010.
In closing, the holidays are busy times for all of us. Remember to keep your house safe for our animals. Anchoring trees, so they don't pull them over. Covering the water tray of the tree to prevent the
cats from drinking water that could have harmful bacteria, pesticides, etc., from the tree. Keeping yarns,

1. Write to the Provisional Breeder Secretary, Cain Haley, for information and application packet. Do not send money at this time.
2. Once the application packet is received, follow the instructions and send the completed application with appropriate dues ($30.00 first year;
$25.00 subsequent years) to the Provisional Breeder Secretary, Cain Haley
Breeder Memberships: $25..00 per year to Breeder Member Secretary, Liz Flynn. A copy of a current litter registration must be included to
enable you stay on the Active Breeder list.
