‘OTTO’ SCENT PYRAMID
'otto' is the signature scent that was created by the master perfumer olivier Polge, working in close collaboration
with Barnaba. He captured the essence of Fornasetti by exploring the olfactory character of the family house and
gardens, registering significant herbs and the woods of the interior. in the final scent, notes of thyme, lavender, orris
and cedarwood evoke the personal environment, while ethereal incense notes at the base interpret the dream-like
dimension of Fornasetti's graphic poetry.

So Olivier, you were familiar with the work of
Fornasetti before working on the project?
Barnaba, is this the first time fragrance has entered
the world of Fornasetti?
B: in the 1980s my father met someone involved in the
perfume industry, and they asked him if he would like
to make a fragrance. and my father said ‘why not?’ they
asked him what name he would give this fragrance and
he said ‘immaginazione’. i always remembered this
name. it is the name that i gave to the atelier where we
now produce our objects. But it was just a theoretical
conversation. it wasn’t until now, when the idea of
making a fragrance for the home was thrown up, that i
really considered it. Home fragrance fits more closely
with the identity of the company than a fashion
fragrance ever did.
How did the idea of a Fornasetti home fragrance
come about?
B: we were exploring the possibility of new licences,
looking to focus closely on the essence of Fornasetti and
not make the mistakes of some past licensing ventures.
the idea of working with a sense other than sight and
touch is interesting and totally new for us. and then to
combine it with objects… scent could be seen as a way to
extend the poetic dimensions of the Fornasetti objects
o: Fornasetti certainly brings poetry into the house, and
a fragrance by its name should also be a poetic evocation
of its world. i believe fragrance in itself, being
immaterial and ethereal, like music, brings poetry
despite itself.
o: when Fornasetti came to iFF to brief us on a
perfume, i jumped at the opportunity to be involved - i
was a great admirer. i am interested in design, and knew
Fornasetti’s work. i love the spirit of the House, its
irony, the research around graphics variations, and the
richness of its variations.
B: the challenge was to find a perfume that expresses
this spirit. it’s difficult to explain it in just one smell.
it was hard to stop at just one.
But for the moment you decided to develop just one
signature scent. How did the conversation between
the two of you go?
B: it wasn’t really a conversation. of course there was
an exchange of words and explanations, but especially
in this case it’s a question of feelings and vibrations something out of our normal range of vocabulary. scent
is something very abstract.
it was important that olivier come to my house to
understand the feelings.
o: Yes, Barnaba invited me to his house, where we ate
a delicious risotto. it immediately took me into his
personal world. it was a unique and compelling way for
me to enter the private world of Fornasetti, as his house
is a multi-facetted reflection of Fornasetti designs, with
the same intricacies and refinement.
B: the feeling with olivier was good, we like each
other. i think he understands the philosophy.
So did you approach it as a personal project - as a
signature scent that met Barnaba’s tastes or one that
embodied the whole world of Fornasetti?
o: i think it was a little bit of both: the world of
Fornasetti, as seen by Barnaba. we looked at several
propositions of things he liked: we tried tagete, from
the marigold flower, a memory from his father’s garden,
but that did not work so well, especially in candle form.
we looked at the garden, his close surroundings, talked
through some of his memories… and then there were the
peculiarities of the house - as i saw it, its tone and its
humour. this is something that provides great
inspiration to a perfumer.
B: i think at the beginning it was personal, because my
input had to be personal. But it wasn’t easy. i would
explain what i like to smell in my life - like the
marigold flowers, for example, that were impossible to
use for technical reasons. and totally uncommercial. i
like very bitter things so it wasn’t easy for me to give
helpful input. i think you were in trouble for a while?!
o: i think what hooked you eventually was the smell of
cedarwood, which closely mirrors the work of the house.
B: Yes, at a certain point there were many versions that
i liked and it was difficult to choose. in the end there
was one i found the most right, the eighth.
Could Otto develop into a ‘Theme and Variation’ of its
own?
o: Yes, of course. it’s a multi-faceted fragrance, with
oriental, leathery, woody notes. any of them could be
individually expanded into another fragrance. we
could play with the original otto, as we would with a
kaleidoscope, and mix and match differently, to bring a
different light.
B: let’s see what happens! it’s important to listen to
what the people think. scent is something so personal,
and based on something very difficult to define.
Both of you are in the increasingly uncommon
position of following your fathers into professions
they excelled at. Do you measure yourself against
them and silently seek approval, or do you feel quite
independent in your art?
B: i’m always talking with him, i dream about him! i
often imagine that he is still alive and very proud of
what i have done.
o: as for me, my father is still very much alive!
growing up, i must say my father and i discussed and
shared a lot of things but very few of these things
concerned perfume. our father to son connection is,
funnily enough, not about our shared profession, but
about our other interests. success is hard to measure and
is not a creative goal
B: it’s true that we are few that continue in the same
profession. there is often conflict but i don’t think it
has to be a problem. My father was more of a hands-on
artist. i’m a mix of art and business. i don’t suffer for
being less famous or genius than my father - i recognise
that it is he who invented the concept. and anyway,
there’s not room for genius everywhere!

'architettura' and ‘Palazzo’ are architectural neoclassical trompe-l'œil decors, inspired by Palladio
and are iconic Fornasetti designs. these decors were first designed in the 50's for cylindrical objects
like the waste paper baskets and then elongated for umbrella stands. the 'architettura’ lid is in style
with the roof typical of the period style. the 'Palazzo' lid has a geometric-fish scale decor taken from
the ‘egocentrismo’ dinner plate collection that recalls another type of roof.

‘weapons used only as decorative objects’ – the overriding purpose of this design is to visually relegate
weaponry to the purely two-dimensional in order to represent them as part of a past civilization and
consigned to the history books. the bullets on the lid have been added to add strength to the irony of
this decor.

basket the decor is used the same way with a row of hands. Barnaba decided to place coins on the lid
giving the idea of the coins either being taken or thrown.

the ‘cammei’ (cameo) theme is dear to Fornasetti, a non-architectural design that still recalls the
neoclassical period. this decor has been used on a multitude of Fornasetti pieces: from tea cups and
other ceramic pieces to trays, screens. this decor is very successful on table tops, so much so that
Fornasetti has produced in several variations and colour combinations over the years. For Fornasetti
Profumi it is used in the main collection against black and as a limited edition against gold, as part
of the ‘cammei oro’ collection.

much of his work involved constant evolutions of specific themes. By allowing his imagination to roam
freely Fornasetti was able to constantly reinvent or reinterpret any given image.
the most famous of these, the image that inspired Fornasetti to coin the title ‘tema e variazioni’, is
the enigmatic face of a woman; the opera singer lina cavalieri. the archetypal classic female features
and enigmatic expression of lina cavalieri became Fornasetti’s most frequently used template and
upon which he based more than 350 variations.

Piero Fornasetti collected owl shaped objects from all over the world that he would then sell in his shop
in the Brera area of Milan; a place where keen collectors of this cute bird would regularly pay visits.
He once organized an exhibition of these objects called 'civette, gufi, barbagianni & co' (civets, owls,
barn-owls & co) at the Bibliofili gallery (founded by Piero in the 70's) where many artists participated.

collection, with its rhythmic interchange of gold and silver on the black background. the ‘Pennini’
design is symbolic of a dying graphic design tool that is very important in the artistic philosophy of
Fornasetti. it stands in defiant opposition to modern computer-led graphic design where the pure stroke
has been crushed by the pixel.

the large scented candle decor by Piero Fornasetti featuring drunken monkeys with various styles of
glasses and chalices was originally used to decorate the dulciora Pastry shop in Milan in 1950.
in 2006 Barnaba Fornasetti designed the interior for l'eclaireur bar and restaurant on rue Boissy
d'anglais in Paris. several evocative settings were created by drawing on classic Fornasetti decors but
also by using some of the themes from the dulciora Pastry shop, including the drunken monkeys.
