Wines by the Bottle
Wines by the Bottle
Welcome to the “New” Yachtsman Grill
– this is our second
location on Nevis. The original Grill was located just a few thousand feet up the
beach and was a much smaller place. After about four years of increasing
popularity, we out grew that location and eventually rebuilt in the building
you’re now sitting in. With this new larger restaurant, our guests wanted a
bigger selection of wines which has never been available on Nevis. Prior to
building our new wine cellar which you now see, we kept our collection of wines
in various coolers in and around the two Grills – while not a great solution, it
worked with much effort. But with our new Grill, the ideal solution to the
problem became apparent and we set out to build the finest state of the art cellar
and to stock it with a selection of great wines from around the world – simply
the best of the best. I wanted a highly visible cellar, easily accessible and right
on the dining room floor – a cellar that would clearly display our wines like
fine art in a proper temperature / humidity controlled environment behind
glass – and with an inert gas dispenser system for premium wines by the
glass.
With over thirty years’ experience in the wine industry I’ll be happy to answer
any questions you may have as I love talking about wine. No matter how little
or how much you spend on wine – it’s what YOU like that matters –– pare
whatever food with the wine YOU like - there’s no right or wrong, However, I’ll
always try to recommend a good heavy Red with Blue Cheese and walnuts!
Wine should be fun – It shouldn’t be mysterious or intimidating – as it’s really
only different flavors of fermented grape juice! It’s supposed to be enjoyed, and
you shouldn’t have to spend your kid’s school tuition to buy a good bottle.
Our philosophy on wine is this –While some restaurateurs talk the talk – we
walk the walk at the Grill letting our wine list speak for itself. Rather than
self-pontificating and pompous empty boasting, we spend our efforts in
sourcing great wines and maintaining stock for your enjoyment. We’ll never
“push” wines on you the moment you walk into the door nor will we try to upsell
you on some no name “treasure” of dubious value. What you see on our wine
list exactly matches what we have in our cellar. There’s no “smoke & mirrors at
the Grill – just the finest wines from the top wineries clearly on display at
reasonable prices.
Our guests are our best critics and they tell us that our wine list is second to
none on the island – of course we have to agree!
“Paradise” Reviewed March 30, 2015 ….Best wine list for red wines in
the Caribbean…. “Great evening!” Reviewed March 28, 2015 ….Extensive wine list with
reasonable prices (for the Caribbean)….
And while carry over 1,000 bottles of wine - for those of you who just want a
nice glass – we offer an amazing 28 different wines– from house to premiums!
We also sell wines to go with attractive cash discounts and can usually source
any wine you desire within a few days.
In our list, you’ll find a good selection of wines from around the world. Be sure
to check out our new Austrian Wines (NO, not Australian! - Austrian Wines
as in “the Hills are alive with the Sound of Music”, Hapsburgs, Mozart,
Lederhosen, Dirndl Dresses, Schnitzel and so on). The Austrians have been
making outstanding wines since the Roman days but unfortunately, not
much of it ever makes it out of the country as the good stuff is consumed
within their borders. From the terraced vineyards along the Danube in the
UNESCO Wachau Region just east of Wien (Vienna) with their famous Grüner
Veltliner and Rieslings - to the south and the rolling hills of the Southern
Steiermark (Styria) Region with their outstanding Sauvignon Blancs and
east to Burgenland and the Niederösterreich areas with their heavy reds made
with Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt and
Saint-Laurent Grape varieties. I’ve
travelled throughout the wine regions
of California, France, Italy and
others and I am totally in love with
the beautiful Austrian vineyards
and their world class fine wines. As
most of you know, Evelyn and I
spend a few months every fall in
Austria where we love to scour the
country side for their great reds &
whites. We’ve been lucky to meet the
top vintners and make arrangements
to offer their wines at the Grill. I
highly recommend you give them a
try - and by all means, visit Austria
if you can!

Beers and some useless factoids
Carib Beer on Tap $3 – (St. Kitts & Nevis) Carib is our local beer and it’s made right here on
St. Kitts. The company is owned by the Carib Brewery of Trinidad and Tobago. It’s an easy drinking light beer that’s
best when cold! The Yachtsman Grill is one of only a few establishments in Nevis that offers Carib on Tap. This
beer is “fresh” (not pasteurized) and is brought over from the Kitts Brewery in cold stainless steel kegs
Bottle Carib $3 – same as the tap beer above but this one is pasteurized for a longer shelf life
Carib Light $3 - a new “lighter” version or our island beer, brewed in Trinidad and offered only in bottles
Skol Beer $3– another beer of the Carib Brewery family – this with a slightly different and stronger taste
Red Stripe $7 (Jamaica) (a 4.7% abv, pale lager brewed by Desnoes & Geddes in Jamaica).
Red Stripe was first produced in 1938 from a recipe developed by Paul H. Cotter and Bill Martindale. In 1985,
the brand was first imported to the United States with poor initial results. American consumers exposed to
Red Stripe through their travels to Jamaica as well as Jamaican expatriates were reluctant to try the brand in
the States since it was not packaged in its distinctive squat brown bottle and painted label. This marketing
issue was resolved only to have shipments temporarily suspended in January 1989 due to cannabis smuggling
in shipping containers discovered in the Port of Miami. Red Stripe recovered and rode the popularity of
reggae in the early 90’s. Today, Red Stripe is synonymous with the Caribbean lifestyle.
Kubuli Beer $6 (Dominica)
The national beer of Dominica is an amber-colored lager. It won
the Monde Selection Gold Medal in 2002. The name, Kubuli. It’s short for Waitukubuli, the Carib Indian name for
the island. (Translated it means “tall is her body,” a nod to the protracted North-South length of the island
compared to its width. Now look at the ingredients listed on the label: malted barley, hops, water. Simple and
pure like Dominica herself. A closer look, though, reveals even more of the essence of Dominica contained in
each bottle of Kubuli. The beer is brewed with 100% natural spring water, channeled directly from the Loubiere
Spring, which is located near the Kubuli bottling plant. Kubuli may bear the essence of a light German lager, but
it’s 100% Dominican through and through. Kubuli is a light, pale lager that (like most Caribbean beers) is very
refreshing and perfectly-suited for the region’s warm weather. But unlike most Caribbean beers, you’ll find Kubuli
to have a bit of a more distinctive flavor.
Kubuli’s pure Dominica-ness also means that Dominica remains one of the few places on the planet where you
can find and enjoy it – well – also at the Yachtsman
Grill as we have “friends” with planes!!
Enjoy……..
Piton $6 (pronounced Pee-ton, sounding better if you can add a bit of a French accent) is a Pilsner beer
brand from the island of Saint Lucia. The beer was named for the Gros Piton and Petit Piton mountains on
the island. It was first brewed on October 7, 1992 The beer is cool, light, and refreshing with a floral and hoppy
aroma - something like a cross between a Corona and a Coors Light (as in, it’s a bit lighter than a Corona). In my
younger days as a sailor throughout the Caribbean – I always stocked up on Piton when in St. Lucia.
Piton is owned by the Heineken subsidiary in St. Lucia. Now here’s the fun part. Between the two main island
beers, which one do you think the locals prefer vs. the tourists? Answer is: the locals prefer Heineken and
tourists prefer Piton. The Piton is a little too light for most of the locals, as Heineken is fuller. In fact, there is a
joke among the locals that the Piton Beer is just the collected water rising out of the Heineken tanks! The fact is
that they are both delicious and the Piton has become a source of pride among Lucian heritage. I
overwhelmingly prefer the Piton when in St. Lucia due to its exclusivity (Hey - you can get Heinekens all around
the world), but Piton is only in the Caribbean – so drink up all you can!!
Banks (Barbados) Breweries Ltd. $6 is a Caribbean brewery founded in 1961
in St. Michael, Barbados as an idea by Peter D'Aguiar, a Guyanese entrepreneur. Banks beer received its first
International Award, from the Lager Beer Competition in England in 1971. The company continues to win
awards through the years.
This is the legendary Caribbean Beer brewed under sunshine and blue skies and celebrated across the region.
In crafting this fine pilsner style lager, they use only the finest ingredients including malted Barley, Galena and
Styrian Goldings aroma hops and craft brewed using only pure coral stone filtered Barbadian Water.
Banks Beer is only bottled in its distinctive brown returnable glass bottle which protects the beer from being
tainted by sunlight which is often the case with green or clear flint bottles. It is a measure of how much this
fine beer is treasured in its home territory that it has consistently been the number one beer of choice among
locals and visitors alike in Barbados for the last 50 years!
LandShark $7 (Florida)
For all you “Parrot Heads” – Land Shark Lager,
brewed in Jacksonville, Florida, is a 5.0% ABV pale lager launched in 2006 as the house
lager for "Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville" restaurant chain.
Buffett’s song "Fins" is about "sharks that can swim on the land", (in reference to men
in a beach town trying to woo a vacationing woman) while the landshark was a
recurring character portrayed by Chevy Chase in the TV show Saturday Night Live. Like
Corona’s, Land Shark Lager is usually consumed with a lime and is a great drink while
enjoying your “Yachtsman
Moosehead $7
Burger” in Paradise!!!
(Canada) is Canada's oldest independent brewery, located in Saint
John, New Brunswick. The brewery was founded in 1867 by Susannah Oland in Halifax, Nova Scotia and
is still operated by the Oland family, now in the sixth generation of ownership under Derek Oland.
With the approach of the 20th century, the company changed its name to the Maritime Brewing &
Malting Co. It faced hard times once again when the Halifax Explosion of 1917 killed Conrad Oland and
destroyed the brewery. A year later, George Oland and his sons moved to Halifax and bought another
brewery. In 1928, George bought a second, larger brewery in the city of Saint John, New Brunswick, site
of the present day facility. In 1931, the symbol of the moose came into existence as George launched
Moosehead Pale Ale. After the success of its Pale Ale, the Oland-owned brewery changed its name to
Moosehead Breweries Ltd. in 1947. Thirty-one years later, in 1978, the brewery president Philip Oland
expanded the brand and launched Moosehead Lager in the United States.
In his autobiography Lucky Man, Michael J. Fox relayed how he told Jay Leno as a guest on The Tonight Show, that he did not like
American beer, describing it as 'too watery' and that he instead would drink Moosehead Ale. Not long afterwards, a huge truckload of
Moosehead Ale made its way to Fox's house as a free gift from the company.
Molson Canadian $7 (Canada) was formed in Montreal in 1786. It is the second oldest
company in Canada after the Hudson's Bay Company. Founded in Montreal in 1786, the Molson Brewery is the oldest
brewery in North America and continues to produce beer on the site of the original brewery on the St. Lawrence River
in Montreal. Although the plant has undergone numerous transformations, the cellars once used to store beer are
still intact beneath the current building.
On May 2, 1782, at the age of 18, John Molson left England for Canada, landing in Montreal on June 26. Shortly after
his arrival, he began working at the Thomas Loyd Brewery. He went on to purchase it in an auction in 1784. Not long
after his arrival in Montreal in 1782, Molson sensed the market potential for beer in the then British colony. Prices for
wine, rum and port were rising and an influx of English and Irish immigrants were particularly partial to beer. When he
came of legal age, Molson used the money inherited from his parents to acquire a small brewery housed in a wooden
building on the shores of the St Lawrence, just outside the fortifications of the burgeoning City of Montreal.
In 1785 he temporarily closed his business to cross the Atlantic in search of the modern equipment and ingredients.
Upon his return, he offered the seeds free of charge to neighboring Montreal farmers who agreed to grow them to
satisfy the brewery's need for malt. Molson delivered his first brew, an ale in 1786, only six weeks after taking the
helm. Priced at five cents a bottle, his brew sold well.
Labatt Blue $7 – (Canada)
Labatt Brewing Company Ltd. is a Canadian beer company founded by John Kinder Labatt in 1847 in
London, Ontario. Labatt is the largest brewer in Canada.
Labatt Blue $7 – the story continues…….
In 1901, Prohibition began in Canada through
a provincial legislation in Prince Edward Island. In 1916, prohibition was instituted in Ontario as well, affecting
all 64 breweries in the province. Labatt survived by producing full strength beer for export south of the border
and by introducing two "temperance ales" with less than two per cent alcohol for sale in Ontario. However, the
Canadian beer industry suffered a second blow when Prohibition began in the U.S. in 1919. When Prohibition
was repealed in Ontario in 1926, just 15 breweries remained and only Labatt retained its original management.
In 1951, Labatt launched its lager; when it was introduced in Manitoba, the beer was nicknamed "Blue" for
the colour of its label and the company's support of Winnipeg's Canadian Football League (CFL) franchise, the Blue Bombers. The nickname
stuck and in 1979 Labatt Blue claimed top spot in the Canadian beer market as the best selling beer ever since. Labatt Blue is a 5% ABV pale
lager.
$6 (Colorado) In 1873, German immigrants Adolph Coors and Jacob Schueler established a brewery in
Golden Colorado, after buying a recipe for a Pilsner-style beer from a Czech immigrant William Silhan.
The Coors Brewing Company managed to survive Prohibition relatively intact. Years before the Volstead
Act went into effect nationwide, Adolph Coors with sons Adolph Jr., Grover, and Herman established the
Adolph Coors Brewing and Manufacturing Company. During Prohibition, the brewery itself was converted
into a malted milk and near beer production facility. Coors sold much of the malted milk to the Mars candy
company for the production of sweets. However, Coors and his sons relied heavily on their cement and real estate company to keep the
Coors Brewing Company afloat. By 1933, after the end of Prohibition, the Coors brewery was one of only a handful of breweries that had
survived.
For much of its history, Coors beer was a regional product and its marketing area was confined to the American west. This made it a
novelty on the East Coast, and visitors returning from the western states often brought back a case. This iconic status was reflected in the
1977 movie Smokey and the Bandit, which centered around an illegal shipment of Coors from Texas to Georgia. The company finally
established nationwide distribution in the United States in the mid-1980s. Today, Coors operates a brewery in Golden, Colorado, that is the
largest single brewery facility in the world.
Rolling Rock $7 (Pennsylvania) is a 4.5% abv pale lager launched in 1939 by the Latrobe Brewing
Company. Although founded as a local beer in Western Pennsylvania, it was marketed aggressively and eventually
became a national product. The brand was sold to Anheuser-Busch of St. Louis, Missouri, in mid-2006, which
transferred brewing operations to New Jersey. From 1939 until July 26, 2006,[1] Rolling Rock was brewed at the
Latrobe Brewing Company in the Pittsburgh suburb of Latrobe, Pennsylvania. As stated on the bottle, it was brewed
in large glass-lined tanks, which were considered state-of-the-art at the time of its introduction (in part due to
sanitation concerns).
Original "pony" bottle of beer - A 7 oz. bottle of beer that became known as a "pony" was originally brewed for
Rolling Rock Beer. The 7 oz. beer was served because when prohibition was repealed in 1933, America was still
coming out of the Depression and the smaller size beer was for the working man who could not afford a full 12 oz.
beer. The 12 oz. bottle has a picture of a horse on it, so, when coming into a tavern or pub, the customer would ask
for either a horse or a pony, meaning a 12 oz. beer or a 7 oz. beer, respectively.
The Number 33 is printed prominently on all bottles of Rolling Rock. Many have speculated on the significance of
the number 33: that the "33" refers to the founding year of the Pittsburgh Steelers (who have their team practices in
Latrobe); that 33 degrees is the proper temperature to keep beer; that Latrobe test-brewed 33 batches of beer before
coming up with the final formula for Rolling Rock. Other theories concerning the number 33 are that there were
exactly 33 stair steps from the brewmaster's office to the brewing floor in the original Latrobe brewery. Also that the
Pennsylvania Fish and Game Commission at the turn of the century numbered the streams within the commonwealth
and the water that was used to brew this beer was taken from the stream numbered 33. One widely held belief is
that it marks the repeal of prohibition in 1933. A former CEO of Latrobe Brewing, opined that the "33" signifies the 33
words in the beer's original pledge of quality, which is still printed on every bottle. And there are even other theories
for the Number 33. However, there is no hard proof for any of the theories, and that at this point no one really knows
what the true origin of the "33" may have been.
Grolsch $8 (Netherlands) An old time Premium Pilsner and a European favorite!
The Grolsch brewery was founded in 1615 by Willem Neerfeldt in Groenlo. The town of Groenlo was then
known as Grolle, hence the name Grolsch, meaning 'of Grolle'. Grolsch is best known for its 5% ABV
premium pale lager. Grolsch was, as of 2006, the second largest brewer in the Netherlands (after Heineken).
The brewery is located today in Enschede and has been a part of the SABMiller group since March 2008.
Stiegl Bier $8 (Salzburg, Austria)
One of the most popular brands of beer to be found in Austria is Stiegl ("little stair" or "little step"), founded
in 1492 and is known for its slightly sour taste.
The brewery has a large museum of beer and beer making on the outskirts of Salzburg, a tour of which ends
in a visit to the pub for a beer on the house. “The hills are alive with the Sound of Music…. especially with
a Stiegl in hand”
Heineken $7 (Holland) – Heineken Lager Beer is a pale lager beer with 5% alcohol
by volume. Most of the Heinekens you find on Nevis & Kitts are brewed under license in St. Lucia
(and come with a rather “unique” and some describe as “awful” taste!).
offers only real Heinekens - those imported from Holland.
The Yachtsman Grill
Heineken Lager Beer was first brewed by Gerard Adriaan Heineken in 1873. The beer is made of
purified water, malted barley, hops, and yeast. In 1886 H. Elion finished the development of the
Heineken A-yeast, which is still used in the brewing process today.
Heineken Light $7 (Holland) Heineken started to develop Heineken Premium
Light in 2004. The beer was successfully brought on the market in Phoenix, Dallas, Providence, and
Tampa in 2005. On 1 March 2006 Heineken Premium Light was launched in all the states of the
USA. With 68 million litres of Heineken Premium Light in 2006, the first year exceeded the
estimated 40 million litres. The launch of this first true brand extension was the most important
innovation in the actual beer since the Heineken brand was born in 1873. Heineken light
reportedly has: 99 calories per 12 oz. bottle and 6.8 grams of carbohydrates. The beer has 3.2%
alcohol by volume.
Corona Extra
$8 – (Mexico)
is a pale lager produced by Cervecería Modelo in Mexico for
domestic distribution and export to all other countries besides the United States, and by Constellation Brands
in Mexico for export to the United States. An explanation for the origin of the distinctive 'crown' logo from
which Corona takes its name since 1925, says it was based on the crown that adorns the Cathedral of Our Lady
of Guadalupe in the town of Puerto Vallarta. This cannot be, as the tower that supports the crown was only
erected in 1952 and the crown itself being installed at the top in 1963. In the United States, Corona Extra is the
top selling imported beer. Although widely consumed year round, Corona is generally viewed as a summertime
beverage. Corona is commonly served with a wedge of lime or lemon in the neck of the bottle to add tartness
and flavor.
Guinness $5 (St. Lucia) is an Irish dry stout that originated in the brewery of Arthur Guinness
(1725–1803) at St. James's Gate, Dublin. Guinness is one of the most successful beer brands worldwide. It is
brewed in almost 60 countries (under license) including St. Lucia in the Caribbean where our Guinness Foreign
Extra Stout comes from.
A feature of the product is the burnt flavour that is derived from roasted unmalted barley, although this is a
relatively modern development, not becoming part of the grist until the mid-20th century. For many years a
portion of aged brew was blended with freshly brewed beer to give a sharp lactic flavour. Although the
Guinness palate still features a characteristic "tang", the company has refused to confirm whether this type of
blending still occurs. Although Guinness may appear to be black, it is officially a very dark shade of ruby.
Guinness is frequently used as an ingredient in recipes, often to add a seemingly authentic Irish element to the
menus of Irish-themed pubs in the United States, where it is stirred into everything from french toast to Steak
Pie.
Blue Moon Belgian White $8
(Colorado) - is a Belgian-style witbier
brewed by Blue Moon Brewing Co. originally in Golden, Colorado, that was launched in 1995. Blue
Moon Brewing Co. is a part of Tenth and Blake Beer Company, the craft and import division of
Chicago-based MillerCoors. In Canada, Blue Moon Belgian White is marketed as the beer Rickard's
White and is brewed in Montreal, Quebec. Originally called Bellyslide Belgian White, it was created
by Keith Villa, a brewer at Coors Field's Sandlot Brewery (the onsite brewery owned by the Molson
Coors Brewing Company). Blue Moon from the Montreal site is also sold in the USA and exported to
Europe. Blue Moon has a more pronounced orange flavor than many other beers of the style, and
also has a slightly sweet flavor. The grain bill for Blue Moon includes malted barley, white wheat,
orange peel, coriander and oats.
Blue Moon is sometimes served with a slice of orange, which its brewmasters claim accentuates
the flavor of the brew.
Lagunitas New DogTown Pale Beer $8
is made by
The
Lagunitas Brewing Company was formed in 1993 by Tony Magee in Lagunitas, California and
moved a year later to nearby Petaluma, California when they quickly outgrew their original rural West
Marin location. The brewery is known for iconoclastic interpretations of traditional beer styles, and
irreverent descriptive text and stories on its packaging. Since the mid-2000s, Lagunitas has been one
of the fastest-growing craft breweries in the United States. In 2014, it became the fifth top selling craft
brewery in the US.
Lagunitas New DogTown Pale Beer $8 –
the story
continues……
On Saint Patrick's Day in 2005, the California Department of Alcoholic
Beverage Control served a twenty day suspension of operations to investigate alleged cannabis
dealing by employees. The company had been known to advertise with the number 420, and
officers had staked out the brewery to observe people supposedly consuming on premises. No
charges were filed; Magee admits "no one was willing to sell it to them, but everyone was willing
to give it to them for free." The ordeal was eventually commemorated with a beer.
The New DogTown Pale Ale we currently offer “was hybridized” with their Kill Ugly Radio, a
22oz seasonal released commemorating the 40th anniversary of the release of Frank Zappa’s
second album. The flavor was too good to let float in the abyss, so they revamped their original
recipe and never looked back. ABV: 6.10%. Net contents: Ounces and ounces of Malt, Hops, Yeast
and water”.
Fat Tire Amber Ale $8made

New Belgium Brewing
is a craft brewery located in Fort Collins, Colorado. It opened in 1991 after Jeff
Lebesch, the brewery's founder, took his home brewing passion commercially. In 2011, it
produced 712,800 barrels of its various labels. As of 2012, it was the third-largest craft brewery
and eighth-largest overall brewery in the United States.
The brewery makes nine year-round beers including Fat Tire, an amber ale, which is the
company's flagship beer. The Fat Tire recipe originates from a co-founder's bicycle trip through
Belgium from brewery to brewery.
Anchor Steam Beer $8
made by the Anchor Brewing Company is an
American alcoholic beverage producer, operating a brewery and distillery on Potrero Hill in San Francisco,
California. Anchor Brewery was founded in 1896 during the California Gold Rush. Historic steam beer,
associated with San Francisco and the U.S. West Coast, was brewed with lager yeast at warmer fermentation
temperatures without the use of true refrigeration (by ice or mechanical means) resulting in a highly
effervescent beer. It was an improvised process, originating out of necessity, perhaps as early as the Gold
Rush and at least 1860 in Nevada.
After several openings, closings and changes over the years, Anchor Steam Beer began to achieve national
notice in the 1980s and demand increased. It was the first of the modern American microbreweries to
produce a porter, barley wine, or India pale ale with regularity. Today, the now successful brewery is one of
the last remaining breweries to produce California common beer, also known as Steam Beer, a trademark
owned by the company. Anchor Steam is a modern craft-brewed lager. However, the company does not
claim any close similarity between its present day product and turn-of-the-20th-century steam beer.
To our guests:
At the Yachtsman, we strive to import only the finest wines and beers. While this list is accurate as
of the date written, our inventory changes daily. It’s an ongoing battle with suppliers, shippers and
customs agents. Harrison Ford said it best in his 1998 movie “Six Days and Seven Nights” as a pilot
flying around the South Pacific….. “this is an island – if you want it, you got to bring it”…..!! Please
ask your waitperson for any deletions or additions and enjoy what we do have in stock.
