Here on this 14-million-year island we find, on one side,
a landscape of poor vegetation, of cliffs and abysses that
fall into the sea. On the other side, there is an extension
of almost 9 km of golden sand and inviting waters.
Experience the 'Yin and Yang' in an island only 11 km long
and 6 km wide.

HISTORY
History and legend mingle when we refer to the origins of the island
of Porto Santo. In 1418 during the kingdom of D. João I, the island was
discovered by João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira, who, with
only a small fleet, prepared to explore the African coast. Ravaged by
a huge storm when all seemed lost, the navigators caught sight of
a small island with golden sand that sheltered them from the tempest.
It is said that this was how name of the island arose: Porto Santo,
or "Holy Harbour".
The first colonisers started to grow some cereals, breed cattle, plant
vineyards and also to commercialise the famous dyeing material called
"dragon's blood", which was coveted in the European markets of that
time. Dragon's Blood was extracted from an endemic plant, already
extinct in Porto Santo, known as dragon tree (Dracaena draco).
The discovery of the island of Porto Santo, in the beginning of the 15th
century, represented an important landmark in the history of mankind,
since it determined the beginning of the great Portuguese Discoveries'
epopee, led by Prince Henry, the Navigator.

HISTORY
Vila Baleira
curiosities
Vila Baleira is the head township where in 1419 Bartolomeu Perestrelo,
one of the settlers of this archipelago, founded the first village. Today,
this quiet town is concentrated around the Largo do Pelourinho, the
main square. The Mother Church and the Christopher Columbus House
Museum (Casa Museu Cristóvão Colombo) are two important historical
landmarks where you will be able to learn more about the history of
the island. To finish your day take a walk at sunset, down to the old
quay built in 1935, or if you would prefer, stroll along the seashore in
the promenade located west of the quay.
There are many curiosities that make of Porto Santo an
island so interesting to know in detail. Discover the history
of the island starting from the shreds of history spread
a bit around everywhere.

HISTORY
lime mines
In Ilhéu de Baixo, also known as Ilhéu da Cal (or Lime Islet), we
find a set of mines rich in limestone, which is an important
evidence of the natural and geomorphologic heritage of Porto
Santo island.
Its slopes are pierced with grottos, which are nowadays
deactivated and several galleries are still open to visitors.
casas de salão (salão houses)
One of the finest examples of the island's traditional architecture
are the Salão Houses. Salão is a name that derives from the
material used on the roof of these houses: a kind of sandy clay
which operates a natural heating and cooling system. The houses
are kept cool during the summer, due to the cracks that appear
in the salão when the weather is hot; and warm in the winter,
as the sandy mix absorbs the rain, thus becoming spongy and
impermeable. It is worth paying a visit to some of the centenary
old constructions that can still be found in the island.

HISTORY
windmills
The picturesque look of Porto Santo is highlighted by the countless
rotating windmills made of wood, some of which are still functioning.
Being an island exposed to the wind from all directions, and with
a relatively low relief, the first windmill was the most grandiose
oeuvre built in Porto Santo during the 18th century.
matamorras
From the 15th to the 18th century, Porto Santo's history has been
marked by it's vulnerability to attacks by pirates and corsairs. For
four centuries, the long stretch of golden sand, which today is
one of Porto Santo's biggest attractions, was the weakest spot
of the island. It made it extremely difficult for the people of Porto
Santo to protect themselves and their belongings from the
pillages that took place.
A solution was derived from the Moresque heritage in the form
of matamorras or open pits, which were dug underneath the
house's floors or in hidden sheltered places. These openings
were covered by a square basalt slab sealed with clay mixed with
water and used to protect the people's belongings from the
greed of the Algerian pirates, who at that time represented the
greatest danger for the island.

HISTORY
Columbus at the island of Porto Santo
There was a famous navigator who lived here and who eventually placed the island's name in every history book: Christopher Columbus.
It was here that the famous navigator married and lived with Filipa Moniz, the daughter of Bartolomeu Perestrelo, the first donatory captain
of the island and here the couple also had a son. Columbus studied and improved some navigation techniques in Porto Santo, already
employed by the Portuguese, which became essential elements for his voyages and discoveries.

WELLNESS
Porto Santo's therapeutic sand
Unlike most beaches, the sand on Porto Santo is essentially carbonated,
formed by sediments of corals, seashells and sea-urchins. With
scientifically proven results, these sands relieve rheumatic pains and
help recover bone fractures, and are used in the treatments developed
by the Geomedicine Centre on the island.
Porto Santo's water
The white sands, the long shore and the warm and
crystalline waters are not Porto Santo's only charming
attractions. This holidaymaker's paradise is also coveted
for the countless therapeutic properties of its sands and
waters, which combine in various forms of treatments.
The treatment of orthopedic, rheumatic and physiatric
diseases is merely an example of the many healing
opportunities of this destination, located only 50 km away
from the island of Madeira.
And that's not all. The seawater's richness in iodine, calcium
and magnesium is another reason why this island is the
ideal place to recover from the body's lack of mineral salts,
caused by stress and fatigue.
12. porto santo
Seawater is used in thalassotherapy treatments, due to its substantially
elevated quantities of chromium, strontium and iodine, all benefic
elements for your health. Likewise, Porto Santo's spring waters, both
bicarbonated and sodic, are also rich in essential components to the
well-being of our body.
thalassotherapy
Stress, exhaustion, fatigue, sedentariness, dietary deficiencies,
intoxication caused by tobacco, osteoarthritis, digestive disorders and
postpartum recovery are some of various treatments offered by the
island's centre of Thalassotherapy, which means "cure by the sea" in
Greek. Come visit this unique centre in Porto Santo and relax while
you take care of yourself and of your health.

If you prefer to visit by sea, you can take the modern
Lobo Marinho (Monk Seal) ferry-boat, with the capacity

If you have your own watercraft, you can also dock at
Porto Santo's marina, which has the capacity for about
165 boats.

mother church
Christopher Columbus house museum
Located at Largo do Pelourinho (Pillory Square), the mother
church, also known as Nossa Senhora da Piedade church, is
one of Porto Santo's main monuments. Stricken by countless
fires and pillages, in its interior we can find many elements of
great artistic beauty, of which Martim Conrado's altar and Max
Römer's canvases are the highlights. Visit this temple and feel
some of the history of the island.
A token of Christopher Columbus presence in the island, the museum
recreates the atmosphere of where the navigator lived before departing
in quest of new worlds. The museum is formed by two buildings, the
older of which dates back to the time when Columbus lived in the
island. In its interior, you will find some portraits of the navigator,
painted from the 16th to the 20th century, as well as a set of maps with
some of the routes through which he travelled. Visit the museum and
discover the island's history.

Ponta da Calheta
Located on the southern end of the island, you'll find in Ponta da
Calheta an astonishing view over the beach and over the island. On
a clear day, you might even make out the island of Madeira. Take a
walk along the beach, starting from the town and ending in this
heavenly place.
Fonte da Areia (sand fountain)
Leave Camacha and head west towards the sea, you will find
a fountain once considered holy. Nowadays its waters are still
believed to have miraculous properties. Although they do not
spout as they used to, it is worth visiting the spot, where the wind
has performed a magnificent show of erosion.
Miradouro das Flores (Flores belvedere)
On the western end of the island, we find Pico das Flores
(Flowers peak), from where we can observe all the island of Porto
Santo, the Desertas Islands and the Island of Madeira, a little
further southwest. Sítio dos Morenos, near the belvedere, is the
ideal place for a small get-together or a picnic.

On this 437 metres high volcano, the ruins of a small fortress dating

from the Algerian and French pirates. Come and marvel with

Padrão das Descobertas
Pico Ana Ferreira (Ana Ferreira peak)
Located at Alameda do Infante, this monument was edified on
August 28, 1960, by the sculptor António Aragão. The work, also
known as Pau de Sabão ("soap stick") shows artistic features
characteristic of Prince Henry, the Navigator's time.
Climbing this peak gives you an opportunity to observe, from
Pedreira belvedere, the Ilhéu de Fora (Fora Islet) as well as
Facho and Castle peaks. Known as piano, this stone quarry is
formed by prismatic columns of extremely irregular shapes.
Cardina museum
Pico do Facho (Facho peak)
In Camacha you will find Cardina museum, an ethnographic
exhibition that displays the every day life of Porto Santo's
inhabitants. This project, signed by José Cardina and opened in
2006, has an octagonal shape and was built in an original sized
windmill. Here we find a vast estate that depicts the domestic
affairs, agriculture, windmills, fishing, among many other details
of the population's life at Porto Santo, ever since the beginning of
the island's peopling.
At 517 metres above sea level, this historical place is the
highest spot of the island and where in the distant past,
torches were lightened to announce the arrival of enemy
boats. Pico do Facho is the starting point of picturesque lanes
that unravel Serra de Fora and Vale de Serra de Dentro, offering
every visitor excellent views.

the sport and take some riding classes. Who knows, you might
discover your new passion!
The Beach Sports Stadium, due to its polyvalent structure, is
ideal to the practice of several sports, namely beach soccer or
volleyball. Therefore, it has become an asset to these kind of
summer activities.

hangglider - paragliding
On Porto Santo you can find the best complex of tennis
courts in the country. Located in Sítio do Campo de Baixo,
in an area contiguous to the golf course, this precinct is
prepared to welcome high competition tournaments. It is
formed by one main stadium with benches for approximately
1000 spectators, plus other five secondary fields and two
paddle courts.
Relish the landscapes and contrasts, ranging from gold to the deep
blue hue which can only be found on the island of Porto Santo.
Feel the adrenalin while you get the most out of this Eden of peace
and quiet, enjoying an experience that will appeal to all your senses.

DIA DE REIS (KINGS' DAY) | January 6th
Dia de Reis is celebrated on the eve and the dawn of January
6th, when several groups parade from door to door playing
traditional Madeiran instruments.
SANTO AMARO | January 15th
The first Madeiran religious feast of the year also marks the
end of Christmas celebrations. This event, in honor of Saint
Amaro, is extremely popular in Porto Santo, gathering local
people and visitors.
SÃO JOÃO (ISLAND'S PATRON SAINT) | June 20th to June 24th
A bit everywhere, can be seen the celebrations of the day of
São João, the island's patron saint. However, the epicentre of
all this popular festivity lies at Vila Baleira. Enjoy the popular
parades, with different groups representing different parts of
the island, be prepared to jump over the bonfire, or delight
yourself with the local cuisine in the many food and drink stalls
spread throughout the town.
