People Helping Animals | PAWS 2010 Report to the Community A Message from John Rubino and Annette Laico Dear Friends, We are pleased to present PAWS 2010 Report to the Community—a celebration of the thousands of lives touched by the work of PAWS staff and volunteers last year. These pages reflect the life-saving work we do and the stories that move us. Consider the story of a remarkable group of students at the Louis Braille School for sightimpaired children. To overcome the youngsters’ challenges, our humane educators used wildlife artifacts, recorded sound, and scented props to create a remarkable learning experience. Whether it was feeling the breeze from the wing of an owl, listening to the melody of a songbird or running their fingers through the coat of a playful dog, these children responded with amazement and utter joy. Charlie the cat is yet another example. Rescued from traffic by a Good Samaritan, the Calico was brought to PAWS where our veterinary staff treated his many broken bones. He was then fostered and later adopted by a volunteer. Charlie’s life was saved by a team of dedicated and determined people. PAWS touches countless lives because of your generous support and your place on this team. In the following pages, you’ll see how we value and respect your financial support by acting as careful stewards of your investment. Thanks to you, PAWS remains a strong and financially stable organization, poised to continue serving our community for many years to come. Together, we will remain people helping animals—and vice versa. With heartfelt thanks, This is the kind of determination we see every day. It’s the determination of a child to learn, an animal to survive, a veterinarian to heal, a volunteer to give. Our Board of Directors John Rubino, President Mark Gross, Vice President Lisa Grimm, Secretary Janet Straus, Treasurer Ben Abrams Tonjia Borland Jason Brotman Dana Culbertson Robert Cundall Karen Davis Smith Brian DeFoe Norma Fuentes Meghan Kiernan Dora Leung Guy Palumbo Chris Sander Alexandra Smith Stephanie Walker Annette Laico, Executive Director John Rubino President, PAWS Board of Directors Annette Laico Executive Director PAWS Helps Animals Find Their Way Home For 43 years, PAWS has provided humane and expert care to hundreds of thousands of animals who had nowhere to turn. Today, in addition to providing the best in skilled care, PAWS has become a voice for those who have none. We speak out for animals with compassion and dedication throughout the community. With your support in 2010, we were able to make remarkable changes in the lives of thousands of animals: • PAWS found loving homes for 2,217 companion animals and reunited 377 lost cats and dogs with their joyful guardians. • PAWS Cat City began the move from its original home in the Greenwood neighborhood (where it’s been since first opening in 1997), to a larger more welcoming space in the University District, becoming the “premier cat adoption center in Seattle.” • PAWS cared for 2,863 wild animals. Of the 154 different species in care, more than 30 were species of concern or sensitive species, including six Bald Eagles, four Peregrine Falcons, and 16 Western Grebes. As Washington State’s only full service wildlife center with emergency and long-term veterinary care, we’re often the only option for these sick, injured or orphaned animals. Our Mission PAWS is a champion for animals— rehabilitating injured and orphaned wildlife, sheltering and adopting homeless cats and dogs, and educating people to make a better world for animals and people. Our Vision PAWS envisions a world where all people recognize the intrinsic value of animals and consistently make choices that demonstrate compassion and respect. • PAWS is often the first phone call when Northwest bear cubs are found in crisis. This year wildlife officials in Washington and Oregon delivered 12 injured or orphaned bear cubs to PAWS. Three of these cubs were transferred to a care facility in Idaho, one was euthanized after suffering a paralyzing gunshot wound, one was successfully released shortly after arriving at PAWS, and the other seven received long-term care over the winter. The expert skills of our veterinarians and rehabilitators made it possible to treat these cubs and eventually release them back into the wild, where they now have a second chance to thrive. 3 PAWS Helps People Help Animals forever homes. These are usually kittens and puppies either too young for adoption or still in need of socialization. Foster families also provide homes for animals recovering from injuries or illnesses. The extra attention and care they receive often results in a quicker recovery. In 2010, the PAWS credo of people helping animals (and vice versa) was put into action in several unique and important ways. With vision, passion and expertise, PAWS continues to be a powerful resource in the community, operating the largest full-service care facility for wild and domestic animals in the Pacific Northwest. These are some of the many ways you partnered with PAWS to improve the relationship between people and animals in 2010: • 1,483 PAWS volunteers gave more than 50,000 hours of service to animals. From walking dogs and cleaning kennels, to feeding orphaned baby birds, PAWS volunteers continue to give of their time and their hearts. • The shelter medical team performed 430 low-cost spay/neuter surgeries for pets of low-income members of the community. This exceeded our goal by 40%. Including our shelter animals, the medical team altered a total of 1,840 dogs and cats. • The new paws.org debuted to outstanding reviews, landing more than 35,000 new viewers, and quickly winning three awards for website design and content from Seattle Weekly. • PAWS Foster Care Program saved the lives of more than 1,200 dogs and cats. Foster Care Volunteers are crucial in the adoption process. These “heroes” provide love, food and shelter for animals that aren’t quite ready for their 5 6 PAWS Empowers with Ideas and Knowledge In 2010, PAWS continued to be an advocate for animals in the classroom, the community and in the halls of the state capitol; reaching a record number of students, families and local leaders. • PAWS Humane Education Program reached more than 5,000 children by delivering 223 presentations to Western Washington students on topics of responsible pet care, dog safety, and respect for wildlife and the environment. The heart-tugging stories and questions we receive from students illustrates just how important this education is for our community. PAWS helps young people to recognize and report animal cruelty, deal with the loss of a family pet, and understand our relationship with wildlife. This education creates lasting change in the students and their families. • PAWS hosted the 2010 National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association Symposium (NWRA) in Bellevue, Washington. The Symposium offered more than 85 sessions, workshops and meetings, and a birding trip to Spencer Island. The event was attended by more than 411 wildlife professionals (representing 42 states and seven countries). These forums are critical for increasing knowledge and connections among wildlife experts, while advancing best practices for the care of wild animals. • PAWS attended more than 30 fairs and festivals across Western Washington in 2010. The orange PAWS tent has become a familiar beacon of information, providing thousands of people with educational materials and counseling on companion animal and wildlife issues. Community outreach has an immediate and positive impact on animal welfare, helping people create healthy relationships with companion animals as well as a respect and understanding of wildlife. • PAWS provided expert opinion and testimony on legislative issues such as the wildlife feeding ban and the spay/neuter funding program. We promoted public involvement with a targeted series of electronic action alerts, while educating the public through paws.org, web blogs and e-mail campaigns. As we have for more than four decades, PAWS continues to speak on behalf of the animals, helping shape more humane policies in Washington State. 7 PAWS in Service Companion Animals Year in Review • 3,160 companion animals in care • 1,840 spay/neuter surgeries performed • 1,218 animals placed in foster homes • 89.4% of companion animals saved • 4 veterinary students trained Cats Served Strays received Guardian surrendered/transferred in Adopted/rescued Lost cats returned to guardian 1,123 657 1,476 47 Dogs Served Above PAWS dogs are walked at least twice a day on our beautiful nature trail. (See her release on back cover.) Humane Education Year in Review • 5,133 kids and teens empowered by messages of compassion for animals through our youth education programs Below During the busy summer months, orphaned baby birds are hand-fed several times a day by trained staff and volunteers. • 6,540 callers helped with concerns about injured and orphaned wild animals and humane solutions for wildlife conflicts • 9,944 callers assisted with helping stray and abandoned companion animals, reporting animal cruelty, and adopting a new cat or dog. HE Above Sight-impaired students from the Louis Braille School experience a simulated “river” while learning about raccoons. The PAWS Humane Education staff tailored this program specifically for these special children. Wildlife Year in Review Wild Animals Served • 2,863 animals of 154 species treated 1,696 birds, 1,161 mammals and 6 reptiles • 41% of animals treated and rehabilitated were released Animals rehabilitated and released • 17 veterinary, veterinary technician and rehabilitation students trained Died despite care • 1,464 surgical and medical procedures performed Deceased on arrival Animals held over into 2011 for further rehabilitation and release 2,863 778 95 747 35 In 2010, PAWS provided release from suffering through humane euthanasia for 1,153 wild animals whose injuries, illnesses or circumstances precluded treatment and release into their native habitat. PAWS Provides Professional Care for Animals Thanks to critical support from volunteers and donors, PAWS was able to save the lives of thousands of animals in 2010: • PAWS shelter veterinarians performed 201 specialty procedures and surgeries on dogs and cats in 2010. During the year, the medical team saved a remarkable 89.4% of all animals treated. This is an astounding degree of success given the wide array of medical conditions in the dogs and cats we receive each year, and illustrates the dedication and expertise our veterinarians bring to PAWS and to our community. Green number 110, as the doe was tagged, was a patient at PAWS until she was released in 2007. The sighting proved that the doe not only survived, but had mated and given birth. • In 2010, PAWS Wildlife Center provided hands-on training for seventeen veterinary students, veterinary technician students, and wildlife rehabilitators. This program is one of few in the state for students to get hands-on experience in wildlife medicine. PAWS Companion Animal Services hosted 17 students, veterinarians, and foreign graduates. Today, these expert men and women make contributions to animal care in Washington and all over the world. • In August, a well-intentioned couple mistakenly “rescued” a harbor seal on the Washington coast. For 12 weeks, our staff provided care for the seal as he learned to fish for food in a secluded pool where contact with humans was limited. After three months in our care, the seal had grown to a healthy fifty pounds, and was successfully released back to his native waters. • In July, a doe and her fawn were spotted walking up a driveway at the Heernett Environmental Foundation in Tenino, Washington. The staff identified the tag number on the doe’s ear and reported it to PAWS.
