Server Infrastructure
• Physical Servers – We currently have 9
• These are Servers you can see and feel
• Need to configure them
• Add Hard Drives, Memory, Fans, Network Cards
• Install Mounting Rails
• Rack them, provide power, then install the OS and security updates
• All of the above takes 3 – 4 hours
• Each server takes power and generates more heat requiring more air
conditioning
• What is the your first action if a physical server fails…
• Virtual Servers – We currently have 37 virtual servers on 5 Hosts
• The servers are software and reside on a Host
• A Host is a Physical Server with VMWare or HyperV installed
• Willow Valley uses VMWare
• One Host can contain 1 to 300 servers
• Takes 15 to 20 minutes to build and configure a server
• Takes minutes to add RAM, Hard Drives, or Network cards
• Can move servers from Host to Host while the server is running
• Clone Servers for testing - Then delete the server
• Requires less power and air conditioning
• Excellent for disaster recovery
