Opens October 21, 2006
Many of the games most common to the United States
have found their way here from other parts of the world.
“Asian Games: The Art of Contest,” highlights the paramount
importance of Asia as a source
of many games, including
chess, backgammon,
parcheesi, playing cards and
polo. This NEH on the Road
exhibit will be on display
in the Heritage Museum
from October 21st through
November 25th; five weeks
only.
By exploring the evolution
and social functions of games
in Asia and their transmission
to other regions, the exhibit
illuminates important yet unfamiliar aspects of Asian
cultures and their ongoing legacy.
The exhibition features four broad categories or types
of games: chance; strategy; memory and matching; and
power and dexterity. Card games, board games and ball
games are all included. The exhibit is structured to suggest
the impact of particular games and the cultural values of
their players.
In conjunction with “Asian Games: The Art of Contest,”
The Clatsop County Historical Society will present other
public programs relating to the topic. The November
TNT (Thursday Night Talks)
presentation will feature a
discussion and demonstration
of the various games on
Thursday, November 2nd
at 7:00 p.m. Family Game
Day, featuring games that
originated in Asia including
a giant size chess game will be
held on Saturday, November
11, from 1 to 4 p.m.
“Asian Games: The Art of
the Contest” has been made
possible through NEH on the
Road, a special initiative of the National Endowment for
the Humanities. It is presented by ExhibitsUSA, a national
program of Mid-America Arts Alliance, and was organized
by The Asia Society, New York, New York.
The Peter Iredale
They’re Back!
Visual Memories of the Last 100 Years
Talking Tombstones III, Carved In Stone
A photo exhibit of individuals and families pictured with
the Peter Iredale is on display at the Heritage Museum as
part of “Shipwreck Week”.
This October 25th marks the 100th anniversary of
the Peter Iredale running aground on Clatsop Beach.
“Shipwreck Week” has been planned to commemorate this
event. The Heritage Museum, Fort Stevens State Park, Cape
Disappointment State Park, the Ilwaco Heritage Museum,
and the Columbia River Maritime Museum have jointly
planned several days of events and exhibits designed to tell
not just the Peter Iredale’s story, but to expand it to include
the thousands of shipwrecks in this region.
Peter Iredale himself (Thomas Peter Iredale, descendant
of Peter Iredale) will be present at the Heritage Museum on
Thursday, October 26th at 7:00 p.m. for a free discussion
about the Iredale family and seafaring history.
After two successful years and the continued support by our
sponsor, Astoria Granite Works, the Talking Tombstones
event lives again. This year’s sequel, Talking Tombstones III,
Carved In Stone, will appear in the Greenwood Cemetery
on Sunday, October 29th starting at 1:00 p.m. until dusk.
Visitor’s should plan to arrive no later than 4:00 p.m. as
the deceased begin to fade from view as the darkness of
night draws near.
Ten former citizens are expected to return from the great
beyond for a grave side chat with any and all willing to visit
their tombstone. Hear from one of Astoria’s earliest and most
respected founders, be serenaded by the melodious voice of
a dusky damsel from Olney, or be shocked by the devilish
end of a devout man.
Greenwood Cemetery can be found approximately three
miles south of Astoria off Highway 202. Just follow the
special event signs.

Photos Needed — Dig out your
scrapbooks
What’s probably the most photographed landmark in
Clatsop County? It’s not the Astoria Bridge or Haystack
Rock.
It’s the Peter Iredale, the skeletal shipwreck that’s
been mired in the beach at Fort Stevens for 100 years,
come this Oct. 25th.
The Clatsop County Historical Society is
commemorating the century mark with a photo display
featuring the Iredale from 1906 through the present. We
are asking members to dig out their family scrapbooks
and bring any and all photos of the Peter Iredale to
the Heritage Museum, where staff will scan the photos
while you wait.
Don’t think, ‘Oh, I just have snapshots,’ because
snapshots are what we need. Many of you have taken
visiting family to Fort Stevens and snapped a picture
of Grandma or cousin Ted at the Peter Iredale. We
want as many shots of the shipwreck as possible, no
matter what vintage or quality. After all, it’s 100 years
of the memories created while visiting the shipwreck
County Historical Society
that deserve commemorating. Soon, that will be all
that is left.
The photos we currently have went on display at the
Heritage Museum Oct. 1, and more shots will be added
as they come in.
