and flavors. This is a bestseller and must-buy gift
among tourists, especially from other parts of Asia.

east pastries. This tantalizing and innovative
combination epitomizes the diverse nature of
Taipei harmonizing the old and new.
Honey Sponge Cake
Originating from Japan's Castella, Taiwan's honey
sponge cake, as the name suggests, gives off
honey's sweet aroma and is one of the best-selling
kinds of cakes. When you taste the first bite, you will
not only be amazed by its smooth and crispy texture,
but by its sugary crust.
Black Stick Mini-Cake
(Bamboo Charcoal Pineapple Cake)
Pineapple Cakes
Taipei City souvenir
Taiwan has been a major pineapple exporter
since the 1960s. Wrapping locally produced
ingredients in paste form in a Westernstyle pastry shell, bakeries have created
a fantastically popular snack delicacy, and
eagerly innovate in terms of tastes and
shapes. Popular worldwide for its scrumptious
texture, this golden-color treat is now one of
the city's major souvenir purchases.
Building on Taipei's "City Branding" concept,
the Taipei City souvenir collection presented
by the Department of Information and Tourism
promotes items that are special, stylish, and
functional. These souvenirs superbly represent
the city of Taipei and its unique culture.

Braised Snacks
A must-try for many Taiwanese and Hong
Kong celebrities and gourmets, the braised
snacks are tasty small eats marinated with
homemade spices and Chinese herbs. No
wonder the braised duck tongues and wings
can always win foodies' hearts.
The filling is the same as that used in the traditional
pineapple cakes, retaining the sweet pineapple taste
and texture of the fiber. The crust is colored using top
grade special bamboo charcoal powder, creatively
making its appearance resemble the traditional
Chinese ink stick, one of the "Four Treasures of
Calligraphy." This gift not only shows how important
Confucian philosophy is but also satisfies your taste
buds.

grandeur, the Temple at night comes alive and unveils its alluring
beauty with lanterns and lights. Every year in the end of March
in lunar calendar, Ciyou Temple hosts a series of well-known
rituals and pilgrimages to celebrate Mazu's birthday. The colorful

Baoan Temple and Confucius Temple
Dedicated to Baosheng Emperor, Baoan Temple serves as one of the
most precious cultural heritages. The venue of this temple is the cradle
of religion, culture, education and art. Every year the 2-month Baosheng

northern Taiwan. The neighboring Confucius Temple on September 28th
celebrates Confucius' birthday with a set of rituals passed on from Ming
Dynasty, including the one that requires pulling the Hair of Wisdom.

A financial hub one century ago, Dadaocheng nowadays has transformed itself to a mecca
of cultural industries. Dihua Street and Yongle Textile Market host a great number of dried
food stores and eateries. Taipei Xia-Hai City God Temple, dedicated to God of Marriage, is
the place where single men and women flock to pray for a promising love life. Dadaocheng
Theater, situated on the 8th and 9th floors of Yongle Textile Market, is devoted to promoting
and organizing Chinese/ Taiwanese traditional theater performances such as Taiwanese
opera, Beijing opera, Nanguan, Beiguan, Hakka opera and stand-up comedy.

A Blue Highway river cruise is perhaps the best choice for
those seeking a pleasant, undisturbed outing. The Tamsui
River and Keelung River run through Taipei, adding to its
visual aesthetics, and in recent years have become "water
roads" carrying tourists -the Blue Highway. The Keelung
River route goes from Dajia Riverside Park to Neihu Science
Park, offering views of numerous distinctive buildings and
other structures along the way. After dark, bright lights
illuminate the night sky. By day or night, a boat ride on the
river shows a different kind of Taipei beauty. There are two
points at which Tamsui River Blue Highway cruises can be
taken: Dadaocheng Wharf, inside the old gates near Dihua
Street, and Guandu Wharf near Guandu Temple. The boats
take passengers to Fisherman's Wharf in Tamsui, along
the way serving up magnificent mountain scenery. At dusk,
beautiful sunsets can be enjoyed, creating a memorably
romantic atmosphere.

Taipei Children's Amusement Park, where fruit-shaped Ferris wheel,
spinning teacups, flying swing and indoor ball pool can be found, is the
paradise for children. On weekends, street parades and performances
are held as well. Taipei Astronomical Museum, having the biggest
theater of the universe in southeast Asia, boasts its panoramic IMAX
cinema which will give viewers a chance to explore the beauty hidden

The forerunner of this park was a Taiwan Tobacco

the artistic community led to the establishment of
this Taipei City arts landmark. The combination of
building structures and techniques from different
periods, and the distinctive shops and other
cultural-creative attractions, give the park its unique
character. It frequently serves as venue for various
arts events and exhibitions, and attracts arts lovers
and young people in large number – a place of
burgeoning vitality and creativity.
Located in the area between Zhongshan N. Rd.
and Nanjing W. Rd., this district hosts a wide array
of independent unique shops, designer shops and
cuisine resturants. Adjacent to the MRT Zhongshan
and Shuanglian Stations lies Chifeng Street, the socalled Blacksmith Street in the past. Chifeng Street
in recent years has seen the revival of life aesthetics,
which helps to explain the plethora of creative shops,
cafes and patisseries there. If you wander through
the alleys, you will also see a dozen of century-old
publishing agencies, tea shops, grocery stores, gold
stamping stores and so on. Reminiscing on the past

Also called Treasure Hill Artist Village, this enclave is
comprised of houses illegally erected in the 1960s and
1970s, built up a slope and, due to the terrain, arranged in
an intricate and haphazard manner. They have significance
because they present a uniquely Taiwanese scene. Treasure
Hill Temple was declared an of cial heritage building in
2004, and the artists’ village was created. Not many of the
original inhabitants still live here, but quite a few artists have
moved in. The artists have free rein to use the public walls
and old buildings as their canvases for creating works of
art. Walking through the quiet alleys, surprises wait around

The Red House, Nishi Hongan-ji and Taipei Tianhou Temple
The Red House was built as Taiwan's first public market. Opened
in 1908, the market was designed by Japanese architect Kondo
Juro with a cruciform-shaped main building and eight-sided entrance
structure that was given the nickname "Octagon Building." In 2002,
the site was repurposed as a venue for performances, a creative
bazaar, and other cultural-creative activities, housing artistic shops
and an outdoor café. Nishi Hongan-ji, built during the Japanese
colonization period and resembling Kyoto architecture, is one wooden
Japanese court-style temple which gives off tranquility in the jungle of
city. Taipei Tianhou Temple, dedicated both to Mazu and Kobo-Daishi,
is one of the temples Japanese visitors frequent the most.
Beimen used to be a main gate to Dadaocheng. Built as a 2-story
building with solid walls, the gate had always been considered a sturdy
fortress. Among the five old gates in Taipei, Beimen is the only one that
has retained its Ching Dynasty grandeur, making it one of the most
precious historic sites.
Beimen Postal Office, founded by Provincial Governor Liu Mingchuan as the
General Post Office, incorporates western classical architecture with simplistic
splendor. When setting foot in the building, do not miss the Postal Museum. Taipei
Futai Street Mansion, the governor office for Liu Mingchuan, now serves as the
gallery for Taipei Photography Center and the cultural salon. The Mansion is the
key to better understanding Taipei's bygone history.

In the 1960s, the historical figure Marshal Zhang Xue-Liang and his wife were put under house arrest on

Beitou was one of the most bustling districts during Japanese
colonization period. Jiashang Inn in this area used to be a high-end club
for Japanese military officials, and after Taiwan was handed over to
KMT this inn was repurposed as a guest house for the wealthy. In 1984,
cultural relic collector and connoisseur Mr. Zhang Muyang refurbished this
building as a museum, housing a great variety of Taiwan's folk art objects
and aboriginal art pieces. Resembling a flock of wild geese and having a
rarely seen layout design, the Museum has been designated by the city
government as one historic site. The neighboring Japanese yard-style
