Kids in Need Resource Center Changes Name: “Tools for Schools Broward”
Celebrates First Year of Helping Teachers Help Kids
Students in Broward’s Title I schools received more than 12,000 glue sticks, 33,450 pens, 8,400 pink erasers and 113,000 crayons in the first six months
of this school year thanks to the brand new Kids in Need Resource Center, which opened in Pompano Beach in January 2011. The center will have
welcomed by the end of this school year nearly 1,500 teachers from 130 schools through its doors who shopped for more than $500,000 in free school
supplies for their classrooms.

The Broward Education
Foundation (BEF) recently
awarded grants from $400 to
$5,000 to 277 Broward County
Public Schools teachers to
support innovative curriculum
ideas in the classroom. In
addition, Motorola and
the AT&T STEM at Work
program awarded four
teachers $11,000 in grants

recognized and congratulated
by Superintendent Robert
Runcie and School Board members and sponsor representatives at a reception held in their
honor at the Bahia Mar Hotel. In total, the BEF has awarded $150,000 to teachers this
year. Sponsors and contributors to the teacher grants program include BrightStar Credit
Union, University of Phoenix, Wells Fargo, AD Henderson Foundation, Nova University,
PNC Bank, and contributions by Broward County Public Schools employees to the annual
Education First Campaign.
As the school year winds down, we look forward
to our major events that take place in April,
May and June. First, on April 18, we honor over
300 teachers who are awarded grants by the
foundation to support innovative curriculum work
in their classrooms. In total, the foundation is
awarding over $150,000 in grants ranging from
$400-$6,000. This year, we received additional
financial support from AT&T, Motorola and
Wells Fargo to support teacher projects in
Science, Engineering and Math (STEM) which
greatly expanded our ability to assist
Broward’s teachers.
Finally, on June 8, we’ll celebrate the end of the
school year with a party at the Hard Rock Casino
where school district employees will find a great
venue to get together with colleagues and celebrate
another successful school year. We thank
BrightStar Credit Union for their sponsorship
of this annual event that all Broward employees
look forward to attending.

Our work does not stop with the end of school.
Through the summer, we’ll be focused on restocking our school supply store so that when our
teachers return to work in August, the store will be
fully stocked with all the supplies they need for the
new school year. If your company or organization
would like to hold a school supply drive at your
location, please contact our office for details.
We thank our board of directors, corporate and
community sponsors for making the 2011-2012
school year a success for the Broward
Education Foundation.
Sincerely,
A Note of Appreciation
The Broward Education Foundation would like to extend this note of appreciation to the
BCPS Materials Logistics Department for their long standing support and assistance to
the foundation, especially with the Kids In Need Resource Center; the free school supply
program of the BEF. They have been and continue to be an invaluable resource and aid in
our endeavors to help the students, teachers and schools of Broward County.
