How to Become a Rifleman - FreedomRifle.com
B
efore even you start the journey to become a Rifleman (or
a Riflewoman), it is fundamental to understand who is a rifleman and why every human being
who loves freedom should become
one or at least try to achieve this
goal. My name is Gianluca Zanna
and I was born Italian, exactly in
Rome. In my former country, law
abiding people have no right to keep
and bear arms, but just a privilege
granted by the government (eventually if you are lucky enough and you
have the right connections). Studying history, in every civilization, I have
realized that slaves were never allowed to be armed. The first things a
conquering civilization does when it takes over a nation or another group
of people, is to take all weapons. I came out with the phrase: “Slaves are
never armed. I am not a slave”. This is the main purpose of this manual:
I would love to see every decent human being who loves
freedom and refuses to be a
subject to be armed with at
least a rifle and the knowledge on how to use it.
Why the rifle not a handgun
or a shotgun? One time
while I was attending one
rifle training class I have
heard this phrase: “The gun
is to defend your person, the
shotgun to defend your castle, the rifle to defend Freedom”. I could not not agree
more. No war was ever won
with handguns or just shotguns. Trained riflemen with their rifles were the
core of every successful guerrilla warfare or armed force. Yes, of course,

now we are living in nuclear and hi tech era, with satellites, drones and
nukes, but think about, even recently in Afghanistan, determined men and
women armed even with an over 100 years old rifle like a Mosin Nagant,
have been able to resist 2 of the most powerful armed forces in the world
(Russia and the United States).
So, we can see the importance of a determined and motivated individual,
armed with love for freedom and for his own country, with a rifle, he and
she can be a formidable asset against tyranny foreign and domestic.
This is one of the many reasons why I always wanted to be an American:
I was tired to be a subject and to beg for
privileges. In Italy after all, there is no Bill
of Rights, and the Second Amendment is
not the only right that you would not have
as a human being. Even me just writing
this book, and just for the things I am
going to tell you, I could be criminally
and civilly prosecuted, since there is no
First Amendment to defend your freedom
of speech.
So, you will understand what meant and
what still means for me when I became
an American the 29th of April of 2005.
April 29th 2005 Ithe day I became
I do not consider myself an instructor but
a naturalized American
I humbly consider myself a professional
student who always is trying to improve in the art and discipline of small
arms and self defense. It is an endless journey and even I am qualified Rifleman at the Army Qualification Test I realize that this journey never ends
but always brings new limits to explore and new challenges. In this manual
I will talk strictly about the foundations, the basic principles of marksmanship that I learned at the several classes that I have attended at the Appleseed Project. Also I will add some other basic consideration for the
rifleman who understands that this is not a sport, but a duty and a skill in
defense of freedom. Remember, with “freedom comes responsibility”, and
it it is also our duty as Americans to preserve and share this skill and heritage that was fundamental in the creation of our Republic.
God bless you in your journey and make you an instrument of good
against evil and may God keep blessing America.

PS If you have any input, suggestions, and ideas on how to improve this
manual, I welcome your feedback. As you can read, my English is a work
in progress. I could have hired a professional editor, but I decided to keep
my original script to better show who I really am.
As I have said, I am just a professional student.

I dedicate this book to my son, and to every human being who is willing to
stand for Freedom. May this knowledge help you in case of need.
I pray you may never need it, but if you will, I pray for your victory.
Blessed be the Lord my strength, which teaches my hands to war,
and my fingers to fight.

2 Disclaimer
How to Become a Rifleman - FreedomRifle.com
The purpose of this manual is to share the skills and mindset to use any
rifle for self defense and for the defense of freedom. I will focus mostly on
the complete curriculum that I have learned at the Appleseed Project Rifleman Classes from a student's perspective, who has qualified several times
as a Rifleman scoring above 210. Also I will add my personal considerations and learning experiences from other sources. In this manual I will not
talk about tactical shooting, since it will be topic of my next book “The
combat rifle – advanced tactical training”.
I am not claiming that this manual will substitute a live class with the supervision of qualified instructors, but at least I hope it will make you a safer
and a more skilled rifleman, giving you the inspiration to attend professional training classes.
I want to be sure that it is clear that I am not affiliated and I do not represent Appleseed Project, or any other schools mentioned in this manual. I
do not claim to be an instructor, but I proclaim myself a “professional student.” I am a proud naturalized American committed and dedicated in the
endless journey of learning the art and science of firearms craftsmanship
for self-defense and in defense of freedom.
I advise you against practicing these techniques found in this manual with
live ammunition without the supervision of a professional instructor. If you
will do it, you will do it at your own risk.
The publisher, the author and the distributor of this manual assumes no liability for any damages or negligence that may occur through the misuse
of this information.
As final note, you will notice by the way I write, English is not my native
language. I could have had edited this book by a professional editor, but I
felt that it would have altered who I am and what I am trying to share. I
hope you will forgive my grammar and mistakes, but focus on the message.
May God bless you and keep you safe

3 About the Author
How to Become a Rifleman - FreedomRifle.com
Gianluca Zanna was born
in Rome, Italy, and was
raised in the coastal town
of Anzio, one of the pivotal
places during WWII where
American soldiers and Allied forces landed to free
Italy from German occupation. Since he was a child,
Luca grew up with the respect of the American soldiers who died to free his
family and former country,
Italy. Since he was a child
Gianluca was dreaming to become an American. Meanwhile he spent the
first years of his life on his grandparent’s farm, where he had the opportunity to shoot and own his first rifle at just 9 years old. Gianluca had the
chance to be familiar with firearms thanks to his family connections. His
uncle was a high level army officer who retired as general, his grandfather
used to be a retired police officer, and his father and uncle through their
line of business were “allowed,” with government permits of course, to
own and carry weapons. Yes, there was not and
there is still not “Second Amendment Right” in
Italy, but somehow Luca was lucky enough to at
least experience the “privilege” of shooting and
enjoying guns. Around 12 years old he moved to
Rome and he joined the boarding school Convitto Nazionale. At 16 he joined the Military Academy Nunziatella in Naples, and as he completed
high school, Luca started a period of his life traveling around the world in search of freedom.
After several years traveling through several islands of the South Pacific and Europe, he finally
decided that America was the final destination. At the age of 30, after several business enterprises in Italy (he was a very young music manager
while he owned and published also a music magazine and music business
books), Luca, with a visa from the American Embassy in via Veneto in
Rome, finally emigrated to America. Here he began his new life, enjoying

and appreciating the opportunities and freedoms that in Italy he could not
have. In just a few years he was able to create several successful internet
businesses with his then wife becoming financially independent. But the
real change that would transform his life forever happened during the April
of 2005, when for the first time Luca visited Arizona.
This experience made him realize that this state was and is the number 1
place in the world where a law-abiding person can exercise the “Right to
keep and bear arms” without government oppression and “permits.” Luca
just few months after this experience decided to move there for good. Living just 3 hours away from Parhhump, Nevada, Luca took the opportunity
to become a life member of Front Sight Nevada Firearms Institute where
he trains in several weapons disciplines.Besides shooting guns and writing books, Luca is a successful songwriter with more than 100 songs produced and distributed all over the world (www.Zanna.US).
He hosts and produces his own radio show on KTOX 1340 AM and on the
web called “Love, Guns & freedom” (www.LoveGunsFreedom.com).He
also paints arts with his handgun (www.ZannaArt.com) and, more important, Luca is an American who took an oath to defend this Republic
against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Since he became a naturalized
American in April 2005, Luca spent and spends most of his personal time
as an activist in the cause of freedom, dedicated in defending the US Constitution and Bill of Rights.

4 Safety Rules
How to Become a Rifleman - FreedomRifle.com
With freedom comes responsibility. As law-abiding citizen gun owners, we
have the responsibility to be safe and accountable for our actions.
Please read and memorize these rules, and apply them—all of them, without exceptions—every time you have to handle any weapon.
1. Treat every weapon as if it is loaded.
Pretty self-explanatory, eh? It does not make any difference if you have already checked that the gun is empty. Do not play with your gun, it is a
weapon, and consider it always loaded.
2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
Don't muzzle anything that you are not willing to destroy. Starting from
your fingers! Or your cat, or your television. Even if the gun is empty and
you have double checked the chamber, always follow this rule. How many
times at your favorite gun-shop have you realized that the muzzle was all
over you, and everything was “OOOOK” because they had already
checked that gun?
3. Keep your finger off the trigger and outside the trigger guard until
you are ready to shoot.
Exactly the opposite of what you watch in most of the Hollywood Movies.
Don't think about how many external safeties your gun may have: your finger is the most important safety of all.
4. Be sure of your target and what’s in line with your target.
Real life is not the shooting range. We have other dynamics, and external
factors, like real people who move around us. What if you miss or overpenetrate your opponent? Who is behind? What if suddenly somebody
stands between you and your opponent?Any centerfire rifle has a great
potential to over penetrate an opponent or objects. In case you use your
rifle for self-defense always be sure who is behind the bad guy.
Remember, as law abiding citizens we are accountable for every round
coming out of the barrel of our rifle.
More safety considerations
1. Every time you fire any firearms you should wear ear and eye protection.
2. Every time you pick a firearm, or somebody handle you a firearm, you
should perform a chamber check, even if you think, or you were told that
the firearm is not loaded. You have the duty to verify the condition of the
chamber. Remember to apply Rule #1 “Treat every weapon as if it is
How to Become a Rifleman Copyrights 2016 by Gianluca Zanna - FreedomRifle.com
7
How to Become a Rifleman - FreedomRifle.com
loaded.”
3. When you sling your rifle, always hold part of the rifle for extra safety
(example: hold the stock or the pistol grip). In case the sling may fail you
will be able to retain the rifle.
4. If ever happens that the rifle falls off your hands, let it fall and do not attempt to catch it. Doing so you may squeeze the trigger by accident and
create an extremely dangerous situation.
5. No Alcohol ever to be used during or before range time. Also, please become familiar with the following potential ammunition's problems.
A couple of important situations could happen and you should be aware.
They can be very dangerous:
1) Hangfire: is a delay in the detonation of gunpowder or other ammunition, caused by some defect of the primer. If you are facing a hangfire,
keep your finger off the trigger and keep the rifle pointed in a safe direction
until the round ignites.
2) Squib: when a fired projectile does not have enough force to exit the
barrel, and thus becomes stuck. This can be extremely dangerous, since
the bullet has obstructed barrel, if you fire another round, you can imagine
what disaster can happen.

5 Who is a Rifleman
How to Become a Rifleman - FreedomRifle.com
Before even we start the journey in becoming a rifleman, we should understand who is a rifleman. In my humble opinion there are two components
in a rifleman: 1) Marksmanship 2) Love.
Marksmanship: if we can define a Rifleman in the technical sense of the
word, he/she is an individual who can shoot 4 MOA (minutes of angles)
with any rack grade rifle and standard ammunition without using any
bench, but just using his body and a sling. The rifleman can hit a 20
square inches target at 500 yards with iron sight and under time pressure.
This is what we call the “rifleman quarter mile”. The average shooter can
barely hit a target at 200 yards, most of the time with the support of
benches and without time pressure. This skill is what separates Riflemen
from individuals who own a rifle. Like having a guitar does not make you
Jimmy Hendrix, having a rifle does not make you a rifleman.
How to Become a Rifleman Copyrights 2016 by Gianluca Zanna - FreedomRifle.com
9
How to Become a Rifleman - FreedomRifle.com
The second component of a rifleman is Love. Of course, this is my personal consideration, and you do not need to agree. A rifleman is a person
who who loves, who is persistent, who is humble, and he is willing to learn
and share the knowledge that acquires. A rifleman understands that learning is an endless journey. As important, a rifleman loves freedom and is
committed to defend it. Yes, everybody can learn how to shoot straight
and punch holes in a paper target, but a real rifleman does not learn this
skill for sport or hobby: becoming a rifleman is a responsibility and a commitment to defend innocent life, freedom, and to become a vital part of
being the last line of defense of our Republic.
In my opinion, besides the Rifle of course, the 2 most important weapons
of the rifleman, are the brain and the heart.
Remember, you are the weapon: the rifle is just a tool.
Characteristics of a Rifleman:
Humility – Persistence – Desire – Focus – Prudence – Practice – Love
Humility: you cannot be a pompous jack ass who knows it all. Learning is
a journey, and the journey never ends.
Persistence: this is not a skill that you will learn in just few hours, but it
takes dedication and time.
Desire: you must really want this. To motivate yourself in this journey, you
must have desire.
Focus: you can't be distracted, this is a serious matter.
Prudence: your life is precious. You are a trained rifleman and your presence is important to your family and Country. Learn how to fight smart.
Practice: you must keep practicing, this skill is a perishable skill.
Love: without it, there is not motivation to sacrifice and commit yourself in
this journey. Love life, love freedom, love you Country.

6 What rifle to Choose
How to Become a Rifleman - FreedomRifle.com
Any center fire rack grade rifle can be a good rifle in the hands of a rifleman, but of course there are several choices in calibers, types of rifles,
and budgets. We will avoid rimfire rifles as first main rifle, like the ones in
.22 caliber because they cannot be used effectively in achieving our rifleman standard. Though, the rimfire rifles have great use for training with
the scale down targets at 25 meters distance (please check chapter “The
Liberty Tree Rifle”). In this section I will not spend too much time in ballistic
or terminal effect of each caliber. This is not the purpose of this book, but I
would like to give you a general overview on the difference between calibers and different rifles that you have as option in today’s market (I am
writing this manual in 2016).
Regardless whatever rifle you choose, stick with one rifle. I understand the
temptation to own many different type of rifles, trust me, I do, and there is
nothing wrong with that if you do it, but at the end when comes down to
training, you want to “blend” in with your rifle, you want your rifle becoming
an extension of you body. There is an expression that says: “be careful of
the man with one gun because he knows how to use it”. So, pick your rifle
now, and, get one or more as back up, load up on spare parts, and stock
up on ammo. How many ammo should I get for each rifle? I wrote this
phrase few years ago, I hope it can answer to the question.
“A gun without ammunition is like an expensive paperweight. When people
ask me, how much ammo should I buy? My answer is, “As much as you
can afford after you pay for your basic bills. Then, as much as your floor
can handle the weight: I like concrete floors.” Let's start with the main calibers, then we can talk about rifles and platform according to personal
preferences and budgets. I will avoid hard to find or hunting calibers.
I will stick to military rounds..
12
308 or 7.62x51 NATO
If I had to choose one caliber only to defend my life, or go
to war and to survive almost every situation, this is the caliber I want. The .308 and its military version 7.62x51
NATO is the round whose ballistic performance can better
help us in achieving the rifleman standard. It is a round
with manageable recoil especially in semi-automatic rifles,
offering great power and reliability, especially in Full Metal
Jacket. With this round not only you will be able to take
down any target and opponent within 500 yards using your
How to Become a Rifleman Copyrights 2016 by Gianluca Zanna - FreedomRifle.com
How to Become a Rifleman - FreedomRifle.com
rifle with iron sights, but also you will be able to penetrate covers and barriers that normally with other inferior calibers you could not. The price of
this round can be more expensive compared to others, but in my opinion it
is worth every penny. The secret is to find the brand you like and that better works for your rifle, and then buy bulk. Remember, a rifleman is not a
sniper, so therefore we do not need to spend $2.00 for match grade
rounds. Yes you want to shoot as accurate as you can, but we can
achieve our 4 MOA even with good military surplus rounds. My best deals
on .308 that normally I use are: Brown Bear in .308 (good for practice) that
you can buy in bulk for $ 8.00 a box of 20 rounds and ZQ1 the real
7.62x51 NATO for about $10.00 a box of 20.
These are just to give you an idea, and of course I do not endorse any of
these brands. Reloading is of course another great solution, if you can.
30.06
It is a great cartridge for achieving the
rifleman's goal, and it is comparable to
the performance of the 7.62x51 NATO
but unfortunately is becoming more expensive and hard to find especially surplus, since the market is drying out. It
used to be the main caliber adopted by
the US Military for the M1 Garand and
the Springfield 1903 bolt action Rifle,
then it was substituted with the 7.62x51
NATO. If you have a rifle chambered in 30.06 stock up as much as you
can when you find good surplus ammo, so you will not be forced to pay
high prices for the commercial versions normally sold for hunting rifles.
Of course, reloading will solve big part of this problem.
7.62x54 Russian
The Russian answer to a 30.06 round. The performance is
great and so the price. You can find surplus for 30 cents a
round or less if you buy bulk. Only problem, you are limited to
rifle's platform like Russian rifles. Mosin Nagant, Dragunov or
similar like the ROMAK are the main choices. If that's the rifle
of your choice, then stock the hell up on ammo, since you
never know when the import of such surplus may be banned.
How to Become a Rifleman Copyrights 2016 by Gianluca Zanna - FreedomRifle.com
13
How to Become a Rifleman - FreedomRifle.com
5.56 x45 NATO or .223
The 5.56 x45 NATO is the military version of the .223. If you
have a rifle chambered in 5.56 you can shoot .223 but if
your rifle is chambered in .223 you should not, since it could
not be safe handling the higher pressure. Recently I discovered the .223 Wylde that allows you to shoot both calibers
safely and offering also a better accuracy while using heavier bullets (for this reason I have chosen this barrel and
chamber for the Don't Tread on US Rifle www.FreedomRifle.com ). There are some limitations for this caliber and
some plus. Of course, as you imagine a lighter bullet with an
average of 55 or 62 grains is not as powerful compared to a
.308 or similar. You will not have the reach and penetration
through covers that sometimes you may need, but there are
some great advantages too. 1) Very low recoil that can
translate in more accuracy. Everybody can shoot this caliber, even a child.
2) Lighter round, you can carry almost the double of the .308 rounds. In
some scenarios can be a tactical advantage to do not underestimate.
3) Faster round. With an average of 906 m/s (2,972 ft/s) this round can be
devastating on flesh. Yes, legally you could not hunt big games with this
caliber in some states, but on predators on 2 legs, with good shot placement, this is a very effective round if within 200 yards. 3) Affordable, or at
least more affordable than bigger calibers like the .308.
Can you achieve the rifleman's standard with such caliber? Of course you
can. If you cannot afford to purchase a .308 caliber rifle and relative ammunition, this caliber and the basic AR rifle platform can be a great solution, but I would recommend this as second choice: 500 yards distance is
a territory where the .308 or similar calibers are more effective and guarantee better performance with accuracy and terminal effects.
14
7.62x39
This Russian round, like the 5.56 NATO counterpart, is an intermediate range round. It was designed to engage enemy
within 300 yards range. If you own an AK, AKM or SKS platform, this is your round. For Close Quarter Battle scenario can
be very effective, since it has the penetration and punch to
knock down you need with an average of 122 grains. To
achieve the rifleman's standard with this round can be very difficult. Shooting an AK rifle or a SKS with iron sight and hitting
How to Become a Rifleman Copyrights 2016 by Gianluca Zanna - FreedomRifle.com
How to Become a Rifleman - FreedomRifle.com
consistently 20 inches target at 500 yrds, yes it can done with an accurate
weapon and a lot of training, but why force a truck ininto performing a car
race ? My opinion: this round is a great round to have for self defense on
your ranch or caste, but I would use it as secondary caliber.
5.45x39
This round was the Russian answer to the 5.56 NATO. A very
fast and light round that can offer
great performances within the 300
yards range. In my opinion and
according to facts this is even
more devastating if you use the
original Soviet military issue 7N6
cartridge. This round has incredible ballistic terminal effects on
flesh and soft tissue, with steel
core penetration capability. It used
in the AK74 pattern rifles, with almost no recoil, and a very flat trajectory, it can be a very great round, but
there are some drawbacks. With an average of 52 grains it still a very light
round, and beyond 300 yards range, you have to consider the accuracy
factor and the effects of wind. Unless you buy the original Soviet military
issue 7N6 cartridge, I would not find the same benefits in the commercial
rounds. This round could be banned any moment and the availability could
be a problem. Also, you will be shooting from an AK rifle platform with
open rear sight, less accurate than shooting an AR rifle with better iron
sight system. Regardless, if this is the cartridge you choose, as usually,
STOCK UP. These rounds used to be very affordable, not anymore. I remember when I used to buy can of 1080 rounds for $120 a box... not anymore. Unless you have 20.000 rounds for each rifle I would not bother for
those, unless you expect Russians troops coming over here, and then we
can resupply from them. But that's another story.
Rifles Platforms
Ok, after my short introduction to the different calibers, here are some
basic rifle's platforms to consider for your journey in becoming a Rifleman.
There are several factors to consider in your decision.
1) Your body type. If you are a small person or with some physical limitaHow to Become a Rifleman Copyrights 2016 by Gianluca Zanna - FreedomRifle.com
15
How to Become a Rifleman - FreedomRifle.com
tions, it is better that you can hit your target with a smaller caliber rifle than
miss it with a 50 BMG.
2) Your budget. Not everybody can afford a $1500 M1A rifle or similar, and
sometimes you cannot wait to win a lottery to own a rifle. You do what you
can with what you have now. Even a $100 bolt action Mosin Nagant can
be very effective in the hands of a Rifleman.
3) Performance. The preference should be towards a .308 – 7.62x54 –
30.06 caliber. These rounds make easier in reaching our Rifleman's standard to hit a 20 square inch target at 500 yards. But as I have said, if this
round is not for you, you do your best with whatever you have.
M1A M14
16
The military M14 and its civilian version M1A are the Ferrari of the rifles if
you want to have a combat weapon that can serve you in almost every situation. The main difference between the two is the M14 is a select fire
weapon. As much as I like the idea to have full auto in some situations, the
purpose of the Rifleman is not to spray rounds at close range: a Rifleman
has the skill to be able to engage and hit enemies at a further distance
(being able to hit 20 square inches at 500 yards the famous rifleman’s
quarter mile). Also, it has been proven that a 7.62x51 full auto is very hard
to control. The Civilian version M1A is everything you need in a military
grade rifle. Twenty rounds of 7.62x51 delivered through easy to change
reliable magazines, in semi auto fire, with a great sighting system, it is
hard to beat. The iron sight system is excellent, so the reliability, balance
and the overall performance. You have available several sizes and models
of this rifle. The “standard” M1A with 22" barrel, the Scout with 18" barrel
and the SOCOM with 16.25" barrel offer a perfect solution in every situation. Some factors to consider that could be detrimental:
1) Overall cost. Not everybody can afford an average of $1400 for a rifle.
The price of good quality .308 ammo is almost double than the 5.56 and
you need to consider over $30 for a quality magazine. For each rifle I recommend you at least 20 magazines. You can see, this is not exactly a low
budget rifle.
How to Become a Rifleman Copyrights 2016 by Gianluca Zanna - FreedomRifle.com
How to Become a Rifleman - FreedomRifle.com
2) Recoil. It is not as bad as you may imagine, but shooting a .308 is for
sure is a more physical experience than shooting a 5.56. Final consideration: if I had to buy one rifle, and one rifle only, this is the rifle I want. I can
hunt big game, stop any predator on 2 and 4 legs, penetrate barriers, hit
my enemy before even can see me.Every family should own at least one
rifle in 7.62x51 and the M1A is a great choice.
M1 Garand
The M1 Garand is a semi-automatic rifle chambered for the .30-06 Springfield rifle cartridge, used by the United States Army from 1936 to 1959.
General George S. Patton called it "the greatest implement of battle ever
devised." Even in this modern age made of polymer, the M1 Garand is still
a great rifle suitable for achieving the rifleman's standard, regardless its
limitations. You will be limited to a 8 rounds clip, that does not offer the
same advantages of a 20 rounds magazine of a M14, but with training you
can still perform fast reloads. You normally won't have a flashider in your
standard Garand, and you will be forced to shoot the harder to find 30-06
round. You can avoid this problem, buying a M1 Garand chambered for
.308 I have bought mine at the CPM (Civilian Marksmanship Program).
Doing so, you can use the same ammo your would use for your M1A/M14
and you also have the advantage to own a rifle that does not need magazines.

FN FAL
The Fusil Automatique Léger ("Light Automatic Rifle") or FAL is a semi-automatic/selective fire battle rifle produced by the Belgian armaments manufacturer Fabrique Nationale de Herstal (FN). During the Cold War it was
adopted by many North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) countries,
with the notable exception of the United States. It is one of the most widely
used rifles in history, having been used by more than 90 countries.
(Wikipedia) The FAL is a great semiauto battle rifle chambered in 7.62x51
NATO. There is also a full auto version, but it has been found to be very
hard to control. There are several kits assembled and made in the USA. If
you can afford an original one, get spare parts, because they may be hard
to find in case of an ban.
AR 10
18
The 7.62x51 version of the AR15. What I like about this rifle, are the ergonomics, and the fact that if you train with the AR 15 has exactly the
same controls. It is good to keep it simple, especially under stress. Train
with one rifle, and when you train with the AR 15, you are also training with
the AR10. A little negative note on the price of good magazines: unless
you shop around, they can be pricey, but overall the AR 10 is a great platform.

AR15
The AR-15 is a military and civilian gas-operated rifle that has been produced in many different versions, including semi-automatic, burst fire, and
fully automatic variants. It is lightweight, magazine-fed, air-cooled, fires an
intermediate cartridge in 5.56 NATO. No, the letters “AR” don't mean “assault rifle” but Armalite, since it was the company that manufactured this
rifle in 1959. This platform is a great overall rifle for engagement from
close engagements to 300 yards. It offers great ergonomics, very easy
manipulation, reloads, and low recoil. In my opinion, regardless the limitations of the 5.56 round, it is a great rifle that can be shot with accuracy and
easily handled by anybody. Magazines are very affordable, and so spare
parts. Don't forget to check the most affordable AR 15 on the US market:
the Don't Tread on US Rifle ( www.FreedomRifle.com )
AK47 AKM/ AK 74
The AK platform, civilian version in semi automatic has some great advantages but also some limitations. We all know the reliability and tolerance's
levels of an AK. Simplicity in operation, light weight and affordable magazines are other great pluses. The limitations are the accuracy beyond 200
yards. The sight system, with open rear sight was never intended for engagements beyond 200/300 yards. To achieve the rifleman's standard it
would not be the first choice rifle, but if this is all you have, practice and
eventually upgrade the rifle with after market ghost ring rear sights.

SKS
The SKS is a Soviet semi-automatic carbine chambered for the
7.62×39mm round, designed in 1943 by Sergei Gavrilovich Simonov. It is
a very affordable military grade weapon with advantages and limitations.
Advantages: Affordable price, easy to operate and maintain, no need for
magazines (train with the 10 round clips), light weight, effective in the
trained hands. Limitations: sights and the 7.62x39 round that were not intended for an use beyond 300 yards.
Mosin Nagant
20
“The Mosin–Nagant is a five-shot, bolt-action, internal magazine-fed, military rifle, developed by the Imperial Russian Army in 1882–91, and used
by the armed forces of the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union and various
other nations. It is one of the most mass-produced military bolt-action rifles
in history with over 37 million units produced since its conception in 1891,
and in spite of its age it has shown up in various conflicts around the world
even up to the modern day, being plentiful, cheap, rugged, simple to use,
and effective, much like the AK-47 and its variants”. Wikipedia. Chambered in 7.62x54R, if you are on a budget, and you need a battle rifle with
a round that can be compared to the 7.62x51 NATO but for a fraction of
the price, this is a great rifle. Of course, you get what you pay for, and it is
not fair to compare an over 100 years old bolt action rifle like the Mosin
Nagant with one of the newest semiauto rifles of the 21st century, but for
less than $200 (I paid for mine $129 around 2006) you cannot beat the
value and the potential of this weapon.
In the trained hand of a rifleman, an 100 year old Mosin Nagant can be a
deadly and effective rifle to keep your enemies at bay beyond 500 yrds.

Get more than one if you can, and stock up on ammo, this could be a
great affordable way to arm all your family and friends in case of an emergency or SHTF scenario.
PTR91 /HK91
I kept this for the end, the Romans used to say :”Dulcis in Fundo” The
sweet is at the end. Even this is not my favorite battle rifle (I prefer the
M1A), this could be the affordable solution to have a great semi automatic
reliable rifle chambered in 7.62x51 with very affordable magazines. The
PTR-91 is a variation of the German Heckler & Koch G3 rifle. Since thr import of this rifle was banned, these clone rifles are produced by PTR Industries, Inc. in the United States. They are more affordable than other
semiauto rifles of same caliber. With about $850 you can buy one standard model. It uses the same magazines of the G3 that you can find surplus for $5 each one and less. It uses a roller-delayed blowback operating
system that makes this rifle very reliable and with great tolerance to dirt.
The sight system is not as good of the M1A but if you stock up on spare
parts and magazines, this could be a great solution to get that type of firepower for half the budget.

7. US Rifleman's Creed
This is my rifle.
There are many like it, but this one is mine.
My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my
life. Without me, my rifle is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must
fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill
me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will...
My rifle and I know that what counts in war is not the rounds we fire, the
noise of our burst, nor the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that
count. We will hit...
My rifle is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a
brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its parts, its accessories,
its sights and its barrel. I will keep my rifle clean and ready, even as I am
clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will...
Before God, I swear this creed. My rifle and I are the defenders of my
country. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life.
So be it, until victory is America's and there is no enemy, but peace!
