iPadTips & Tricks DPlantz / 7.30.2013 Note: Siri is available on the 3rd generation iPad or newer iPad 2s with retina display. [See section Q] This document can be viewed at this Google Docs: http://goo.gl/zY5cV A. Power • To totally power down the iPad, press and hold the power button until you get a message to “slide to power off”. • To turn it back on, click and hold the power button until you see the Apple symbol. B. Home Button -- round button with white square • • To wake up/sleep your iPad, press the Home button Pressing the Home button once always takes you back to the Home screen • Double clicking on the Home button takes you to the Multitasking bar which shows all the apps that are currently open C. Screens • Eleven screens available; small dots above multitasking bar indicate number of screens used • • Each screen can contain twenty folders; each folder can contain twenty apps Six apps are allowed in dock; hold to wiggle, then drag & drop to add or take off apps D. To move an App to another screen • Touch & hold to shake apps • Move icon to edge of screen to change location to a new screen or • Move the icon (once it is shaking) to the dock, then move to the new screen and move the icon off the dock E. To delete an app (up to 20 apps in one folder; 20 folders on a page; 11 pages = 4400 apps!) • Touch & hold till apps shake and display the “x” for deleting • Touch the “x” to delete the app (Note: you must also remove the app from your iTunes account, or it will come back with the next sync) F. To create a folder • Touch & hold till apps shake • Move one app onto another one to create a folder • Rename the folder if desired G. To rename a folder • • • Touch & hold till folders shake Touch the title that appears Keyboard will open for editing H. Touch the Home button to turn off shaking I. To move a Folder to another screen • • Touch & hold to shake folders Move folder icon to edge of screen to change location to a new screen J. To move a Folder • Touch & hold to shake apps • • Drag one app onto another -- this will create a folder Rename the folder K. Search the iPad • Flick screens to the right till you see the black screen with keyboard and search box to find an app on you iPad L. Settings > General > Multitasking Gestures: Use four or five fingers to: • • Pinch to the Home Screen (or double-tap Home button) Swipe up to reveal multitasking bar (open apps) • to close apps in multitasking bar, touch & hold till apps shake • touch the “minus sign in a red circle/upper left corner of app” • Swipe the screen left or right between apps Use two fingers to: • • Pinch together to zoom out Pinch apart to zoom in M. Lock either Orientation or Mute • • Settings > General > Use Side Switch to: Choose Lock Rotation or Mute • • • Side button on iPad will control the option selected Note: it is suggested to choose Lock Rotation as there is a side button for volume Another Note: if you have previously selected Mute and have the iPad muted when you switch to Lock Rotation, the iPad will stay muted until you redo this setting. 2 N. Keyboard Tips • • • • Keyboard “clicks” sound off > Settings > General > Sounds > Keyboard Clicks Double-tap to lock caps -- caps key turns to blue background with white arrow Undo/Redo = tap the .?123 key for Undo; then tapt the #+= key for Redo To float keyboard, touch & hold keyboard key; also splits keyboard if setting is enabled • • • • Slide to access numbers without switching to the number option Split keyboard (must be turned on in Settings > General > Split Keyboard “.” Shortcut (double-tap spacebar = period+space) (Settings > General > Keyboard) Shortcut word completions (Settings > General > Keyboard > Shortcuts) o Add: [example] sol = So out of luck! o Add: [example] cfasd = Chippewa Falls Area School District • To delete a shortcut word completion: (Settings > General > Keyboard > Shortcuts) Touch the Edit button in the upper right of the screen; then click on the red minus sign; then click Delete to the right of the phrase O. Keyboards Settings > General > International > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard… (EMOJI) • • To access keyboards, touch & hold on the globe symbol. To access special diacritic and accent marks, touch and hold a letter. P. Selecting, Cutting, Copying, and Pasting Text From: http://www.convertvideotoipad.org/ipad-tips/how-to-select-copy-and-paste-text-onipad.html on 2.9.2011 To Select Text on iPad • Press and hold over the text you want to copy. After around 2 seconds a magnifying glass appears and the word it intends to select is highlighted in blue. • Move the magnifier around until it highlights the word you want, then let go. • Tap the Copy button that appears above the selected text. To Select Longer Text on iPad • • Drag the blue bars at the beginning and end of the selected word or text. Tap the Copy button that appears above the selected text. In Text Editing Fields or Apps • • Double tap a single word to select it. Drag the blue bars to select more text in front of or behind it. 3 • Tap a word four times in quick succession to select a whole paragraph. To Select More Text at a Time or to Paste Text on iPad: • • Tap and hold anywhere in the editing area and the magnifying circle will appear. Release without highlighting a word and the Select/Select All/Paste options will appear. Q. Siri [only available on the new iPad (not 1 or 2) with iOS 6 • To talk to Siri, hold down the Home button and you’ll hear two quick beeps and see “What can I help you with?” on the screen. Just begin speaking. • The microphone icon lights up to let you know that Siri hears you talking. Once you’ve started a dialogue with Siri, tap the microphone icon to talk to it again. R. Delete List Items • When items appear in a list form, a single-finger swipe-to-the-right will bring up an option to Delete S. Cameras—Still and Video • • One front/one back Camera icon (lower right) with arrows switches from front to back • Camera/VideoCam icon (lower right) switches from still to video o Zoom only on rear facing still camera o “Pinch apart” fingers to bring up zoom slidebar • Access pictures through Camera (lower left corner) or • • • Access pictures through Photos App To edit a picture, touch the picture to bring up editing, sharing, etc at top of screen To edit a video, access through the Camera (not through Photos) o Touch clip at top till yellow outline appears; can then trim beginning and ending only U. Add web site to Home screen • Click on Options button on a web site (box with arrow pointing to upper-right) V. Add web site to Home screen • “Share” icon 4 • • Note Bookmarks vs Bookmarks Bar (If Bookmarks Bar is not visible, go to Settings > Safari (in left column) > Always Show Bookmarks Bar = ON • Bookmark management (folders, moving, deleting) will be covered in “Beyond the Basics” W. Accessibility http://www.apple.com/accessibility/itunes/ipodtouch.html Single click to select; three fingers to drag Settings > General > Accessibility > Vision • • • • VoiceOver - speaks all options and can give hints (if turned on) Zoom - magnifies all screens Large Text - select the size desired for Calendar, Contacts, Mail, Messages, and Notes Speak Selection - gives user an option to have selected text spoken • Speak Auto-text - you’ll hear a sound effect and the suggested word spoken automatically; keep typing to ignore, or space bar to accept • Triple-click Home Button - options to toggle (VoiceOver, White on Black, Zoom, AssistiveTouch, or Ask) X.
