Starting with applying the cement to the framework and finishing with carefully applying the tiles to the structure. The tiles were purchased and cut from Heath Ceramics; a high end tile maker who specializes in one of a kind glazes and process right that's made in Sausalito. Each child was given a "section" of the rocket ship to apply a selection of spectacular color. We even included scrabble tiles that spell out Davis and dominos that add up to the number of kids in the class. A labor of love and learning this is the perfect sculpture to brighten your garden. Gyotaku (Gyo = fish + Taku = impression) is a traditional form of Japanese fish rubbing, dating from the mid 1800s, a form of nature printing used by fishermen to record their catches. The children used Sumi ink with a brush or roller to cover the fish and then placed rice paper over it and gently pressed on the fish. The result, a mirror image of the fish, yet each unique based on the individuals touch!
