Leading the way in the set-top box world
Leading the way in the set-top box world You decide the functionality… Multiple/interactive Interactive STB ST has developed complete scalable solutions targeted for low to high end set-top box requirements. With our silicon technology and your system knowledge we can easily deliver advanced multi-functional boxes for all your needs. Starting from the basic broadcast box, where price is a major driving force, we have cost optimized chipsets and two layer printed circuit board (pcb) layouts. Moving to the higher end boxes, we can add our extensive in-house and third party relationships to add middleware, trick mode and DVD certified software. For the whole home concept we can provide a network approach where each box can share the content and functionality of all other boxes in the network. Free-to-air Brick Satellite STMicroelectronics makes it happen Integration DVD combo Intelligence PVR time shifting OMEGA Home networking HAVANA Set-top box Terrestrial Cable Connectivity to the world ST provides high-performance, low power and cost-effective digital solutions. These are fully supported by common interface (CI) and smartcard products, providing conditional access and copyright protection. Digital terrestrial The STV0360 single-chip, digital COFDM terrestrial demodulator features a built-in A/D converter and implements all COFDM decoder functions, from the ADC through to the MPEG2 transport stream. The device decodes DVB-T and NORDIG standards and supports 2K/8K carrier modulation modes. Digital satellite The STV0399 integrates a ZIF tuner, QPSK/8-PSK demodulator and forward error correction block in a single integrated circuit, requiring few external components and no specialist RF expertise for board layout. An additional Turbo Code FEC in the STV0499 provides up to 30% more bandwidth than conventional systems, as well as backward compatibility. Digital cable The STV0297J Universal QAMFEC demodulator implements ITU-T J83 annexes A/B/C with integrated support for transport stream multiplex frame and all QAM constellations. The design of the STV0396 DOCSIS V1.1 cable modem chip has been optimized for use in low-cost data, or data and voice modem, as well as in DOCSIS-enabled set-top boxes and gateways. For VoIP applications, characterized by PCI connectivity, the STV0397 DSP co-processor supports packetized voice, including embedded multimedia terminal adaptors in the PacketCable™ initiative. ADSL ST’s ADSL chipsets and complete modem hardware/software reference designs enable OEMs to add ADSL capability to their products quickly. The chipsets provide a choice of Ethernet, USB or PCI interfaces, are compatible with international standards, and are interoperable with all major DSLAM manufacturers. The need for constant improvements in security levels, coupled with the latest innovations in cryptography, has inspired ST to develop dedicated solutions. OMEGA – The Web browsing The OMEGA architecture provides a scalable solution for web browsing. An OMEGA stand-alone can be used for basic TV browsing and, with the addition of an STi5528, the box is transformed into a digital home entertainment platform capable of supporting interactive TV combined with broadband Internet content. Screens Voice-over-IP (VoIP) Both home gateway and IP telephone applications connected by Ethernet are served by the ST VoIP chip Stradivarius for IP telephony, and the scalable STV0397 DSP co-processor. The STV0397 combined with a host such as the STV0396 or ST40RA166 provides a scalable VoIP platform for gateways and broadband applications with higher port density. Other VoIP platforms are based on the Stradivarius STLC1502, the STw5093 voice band CODEC and the STE100P Ethernet PHY chip. OMEG Advanced graphics The advanced ‘GAMMA’ graphics engine includes a 2D graphics processor with integrated colour format conversion, XY drawing and anti-flicker filtering to ensure superior browser performance. For combined TV and web, GAMMA allows any four video and graphics sources to be combined with background colour and cursor planes, taking the set-top box user experience to new heights of interactivity. A Universa l en Consumer ter Home s olutio Home network ST is developing a broad range of ICs for home networking, covering both wired and wireless standards, including Ethernet, HomePNA, Bluetooth, 802.11, and voice applications over IP or DSL. The IAD/Home networking device family is designed to add voice, home networking and Internet connectivity to consumer products. Based on ST ADSL technology, the first chipset of the family, Unicorn/Lipari, enables the development of broadband multiservice applications. MCUs scalable concept MPEG2 decoding Web appliances ST’s OMEGA STi5516 and STi5518 MPEG2 decoders lie at the core of the set-top box. A common architecture throughout enables scalability of both performance and functionality, enabling OEMs to develop new, advanced profile set-top boxes, while capitalizing on existing software investment and maintaining support for legacy applications. DVD The same OMEGA architecture is used in DVD players with the STi5519 and STi5580 derivatives, allowing OEMs to exploit multiple markets with the same OMEGA platform. Personal video recording (PVR) A hard disk drive connected directly to the OMEGA interface provides a low-cost implementation of the personal video recorder. While all OMEGA variants support simple time shift recording, the triple transport engine of the STi5514 enables enhanced functionality such as simultaneous multiple watch and record. Such advanced features enable broadcasters to deliver a rich media spectrum to their viewing audience. A ngine Camera s rminal ST’s CMOS imaging technology enables a low-cost camera to be connected directly to the set-top box. CMOS area image sensors can be matched to co-processors to offer complete camera solutions (QCIF/CIF/VGA CCIR656,USB, etc.) for many vision-based applications and services. ons Audio Audio The set-top box decoders support multiple audio formats. These include Dolby Digital and MP3 decoding, as well as Dolby ProLogic® and SRS TruSurround® post-processing. This allows box manufacturers to differentiate their products in the market versus competitors offerings. Modular hardware and software Each member of the OMEGA family integrates all the functions required for MPEG2 decoding in a digital TV set-top box environment. The family includes an MPEG transport demultiplexer with descrambling, an ST20 VL-RISC CPU, an MPEG2 video decoder, an audio decoder, HDD interface, a graphics subsystem and a digital encoder. Benefiting from close relationships with the world's leading set-top box manufacturers, ST offers a broad range of competitive solutions for the current and emerging generation of set-top boxes Meeting the set-top box challenge with ST Flash Industry-standard Flash When higher densities or advanced performances are required, the M58LWxxx family provides the solution. The products are available in different versions, each of them offering enhanced features. The M58LWxxxC family is also available with additional security features, which make it ideal for set-top box applications. Flash and security Without these security features, hackers can change the content of Flash memory to get free access to the service. However, once a sector is locked with smart protection, this is impossible - their only option is to remove and replace the Flash memory. But the new memory won’t have the same unique code as the original, so the service provider simply needs to compare the Flash code with the smartcard serial number. If these numbers are inconsistent with its records, service will be denied.
