MARTELL, PH.D. Lion Point Capital Saxe Distinguished Professor of Finance Fulbright Grantee from Sweden Baruch College, CUNY idric Cederholm is a Founding Partner and the Chief Investment Officer of Lion Point Capital. Prior to founding Lion Point in 2014, he spent nearly eight years at Elliott Management, from Analyst to Senior Portfolio Manager, and also held positions at AIG and Eos Partners. At Elliott he focused on special situation equities and credit in industries including auto and captive finance, media and telecommunications, financials, and general industrials. He has served on creditors’ committees in large restructurings including Lehman Brothers, General Motors, GMAC, Kaiser Aluminum, and Parmalat, to name a few. Born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden, Mr. Cederholm graduated in 2003 with honors from Columbia Business School, where he was a Fulbright Scholar, and has an L.L.M. from Stockholm University, where he graduated in 2001 with a focus on bankruptcy and contract law. From 1997-1999, he served in the Swedish Armed Forces, undergoing a rigorous selection process to become an Interrogation Officer and later a 2nd Lieutenant in Swedish Military Intelligence, where he studied Russian language and culture along with military strategy. He worked for the Swedish NATO Delegation in Brussels, and when one of the diplomats there spoke of the amazing experience he had had as a Fulbright grantee to Columbia University, Mr. Cederholm knew he wanted to apply. “The most important moment of my life (other than meeting my wife) was receiving the Fulbright grant and being accepted at Columbia Business School,” he says. “I wouldn’t be here today, not just geographically, but as a person. It gave me the chance to work with incredible people who showed me the importance of continued development, openmindedness and intellectual humility.” Central to his time at Columbia was not just studying hard, but making friends and building lasting relationships. “Friends which my wife and I made then are more like family today,” he says. Mr. Cederholm continues to guest lecture at Columbia Business School on distressed investing and other topics. Moving here in 2001, Mr. Cederholm was impressed by the realities of American life. “Growing up in Europe with the TV show Friends and popular culture, you think you understand American culture and society — you’re good at English — then you get here and realize how many significant differences there are,” he says. Calling himself an “ideological refugee,” Mr. Cederholm speaks warmly of his experience here, while still appreciating his roots in Sweden. He and his wife, Kristin Cederholm, travel regularly to see family there. “It’s important to us that our children have this connection,” he says. The Cederholms are proud supporters of educational and cross-cultural initiatives in New York City, Haiti, Nepal, and Somalia. Living in New York City was a dream which Mr. Cederholm had nurtured from age 10, when his family visited close friends on Long Island — friends who later provided a home away from home during his Fulbright years and beyond. “It’s great that One To World connects local families to students without the historical connection I had,” he says. “It’s such a spectacular way to provide that access.” ONE TO WORLD 2016 FULBRIGHT AWARDS DINNER | 6 T errence Martell is the Director of the Weissman Center for International Business at Baruch College, the Saxe Distinguished Professor of Finance, creator of Baruch’s Global Student Certificate Program, and a trustee of the City University of New York. A leading authority on international commodity markets, he was previously Senior Vice President of the Commodity Exchange, Inc. in New York City, and continues to conduct extensive research in this area. He serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of ICE Clear U.S. He is Chairman of the Board of VVC, an exploration and production company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. As a senior at Iona College, Dr. Martell chose the commodities exchanges as a research topic. “No one was interested in them at the time,” he says. He visited exchanges all over Manhattan, fascinated by the traders’ raucous yelling on the floor. He earned a B.A. in economics from Iona and a Ph.D. in finance from Pennsylvania State University, writing his dissertation on the commodities markets as well. He then taught at the University of Alabama for nine years. “As luck would have it,” he says, “the financial futures market started to develop.” In 1980, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange approached him to develop a Standard & Poor’s 500 Index futures contract, which he did, to enormous success. Index trading opened up and grew exponentially. Dr. Martell moved back to New York City to serve at the Commodity Exchange. When he began his tenure at Baruch College in 1988, Dr. Martell was also retained by the Sydney Futures Exchange to consult on strategic issues. “This was my first ongoing work experience in another culture,” he says. “I saw that Australia had the legal, intellectual and financial infrastructure to be a player in the Asian time zone, and I had to learn how markets in Singapore and China worked.” At CUNY, Dr. Martell chairs the University Faculty Senate and serves on the Fiscal, Audit, and Investment Committees of the Board of Trustees. As head of the Weissman Center at Baruch, he directs study and work abroad opportunities, partnering with a premier university in China, the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics. An exchange program with the Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange brings Chinese mid-level managers to Baruch for a semester and sends Baruch students to be summer interns there. In addition, Baruch interns also travel to Xiamen, China, in exchange for Xiamen students who study at Baruch for a semester. “Our students are not wealthy. They face intense family and work obligations. It is a challenge to hop on a plane and be gone for three or four months. Because of the support we receive from our alumni, we make it possible for them to have the study and work abroad experiences they need to compete. The Weissman Center is committed to helping our students succeed.” ONE TO WORLD 2016 FULBRIGHT AWARDS DINNER | 7 ONE TO WORLD FULBRIGHT AWARD FOR GLOBAL BUSINESS LEADERSHIP ONE TO WORLD FULBRIGHT AWARD FOR CITIZEN DIPLOMACY AND OUTSTANDING SERVICE WENKE B. THOMAN STERNS CLARKE MURPHY Managing Director Chief Executive Officer Industrial Mineral Holdings Russell Reynolds Associates C larke Murphy is CEO of Russell Reynolds Associates and serves on the Board of Directors. He has conducted Board of Director searches for Wells Fargo, UnitedHealth Group, and MSCI, as well as CEO assignments for MasterCard, Genworth, ARAMARK, and Duke Energy, among others. He has led notable searches in the private equity industry including for the Carlyle Group and Warburg Pincus. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations as well as a member of the Board of Directors for the New York City Ballet, and a former Trustee of the College Foundation of the University of Virginia, his alma mater. Mr. Murphy was 17 went when he first experienced life outside the U.S. as part of a high school exchange program to Paris that changed the trajectory of his life. “Spending a half-semester in a foreign country—the experience of French culture, politics, music, travel—was absolutely pivotal,” he says. Having grown up sailing and racing, Mr. Murphy dreamed of sailing across the North Atlantic. He took two years off after graduating from UVA with a B.A. in History in 1984, completing three transatlantic trips in 12 months. He then led the first-ever American racing team to sail the Tour de France. He moved to New York City in 1986 to take a position with Manufacturers Hanover, but deferred his employment to organize ”Operation Sail,” the Tall Ship gathering for the centennial celebration of the Statue of Liberty—the largest flotilla of tall ships to assemble in modern history. In 1988, Mr. Murphy joined Mr. Russell Reynolds as Chief of Staff of his eponymous global executive search and assessment firm. “For three years I went everywhere he went, writing his speeches, visiting offices and clients globally.” In 1992, Mr. Murphy moved to Frankfurt to help build the firm’s German business before moving to London. In 1998, he returned to New York to lead the firm’s U.S. activities and expand throughout the Americas. In 2007, he was appointed global leader of the CEO/Board Practice, and in 2012 he became CEO, running the business globally. “This little kid from Virginia went to Paris, and look what happened,” he says. His passion for sailing has remained with him, and since 2005, Mr. Murphy has completed three trans-Atlantic races with a crew of Welsh, Scottish, English, Danish, South African, New Zealand, and American sailors. Profiled in The Wall Street Journal, Mr. Murphy noted that multi-cultural teams are valuable in the world of work as well. “Businesses that recruit diverse staffs often are the most innovative because of the possibility for a rich exchange of ideas.” With his wife, Whitney, and brother, Byrne, Mr. Murphy created the Murphy Fund for International Study at the University of Virginia. The fund awards two stipends each year to UVA students who cannot otherwise afford to study abroad. “For students today, having a global experience is crucial, not just to understand different cultures but to understand American culture.” ONE TO WORLD 2016 FULBRIGHT AWARDS DINNER | 8 W Chair, One To World Board of Directors enke Thoman Sterns is Managing Director of Industrial Mineral Holdings. The first female member of the Boston Stock Exchange, she built a global career at companies including Chargeurs Reunis, Donaldson Lufkin & Jenrette, American Can/Primerica and PaineWebber. Born in Norway, she is a dual Canadian-American citizen and holds an M.B.A. from INSEAD. She is a Trustee of the MacJannet Foundation, fostering cross-cultural exchanges and global citizenship, and a Trustee of the Judith Connelly Delouvrier Scholarship Fund. For the past eight years she has served as Chair of the Board of One To World, having joined the Board in 2005. Since 1979, Ms. Thoman Sterns has lived and worked in New York City, joining Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette to work on high technology IPOs. In 1985 she became Vice President for Mergers and Acquisitions for American Can Company, and later joined PaineWebber as Vice President of Corporate Finance, focusing on cross border transactions. In 1990, she and a colleague acquired the Rain Hill Group, a consulting firm serving large multinational clients on every continent. After selling the company in 1994, she joined INSEAD classmate Philippe Delouvrier to build the Industrial Insulation Group, LLC, the largest manufacturer of calcium silicate and mineral wool industrial insulation products in the U.S., which they sold to a Berkshire Hathaway company in 2012. Ms. Thoman Sterns was raised in Norway, Germany, and Canada, and educated at the Universities of McGill, Tufts, and Geneva. She held positions in finance and business throughout her college years. Moving to New York City in 1969, she worked with A. Lipper & Co., developer of the Lipper Mutual Fund Analytical Service. She and a colleague founded the Turnbull Bay Corporation, a broker dealer, and she joined EF Hutton in 1974 where she specialized in pension monitoring services and other quantitative products. She moved to Paris in 1976, earning her INSEAD degree at Fontainbleu. “I loved INSEAD,” she says. “It’s hard to imagine a more international educational experience.” In Paris, she became Director of Development of the Group Pricel, a large textile conglomerate, traveling extensively to countries throughout Europe and South America. Ms. Thoman Sterns is passionately interested in creating crosscultural opportunities for the exchange of ideas. Her commitment was formed while she lived in Geneva, where she met Donald and Charlotte MacJannet, international educators who welcomed her—and many other ex-pats—into their home and circle of friends. The MacJannets established a foundation dedicated to international education and exchange, and Ms. Thoman has served on its Board of Directors for more than 25 years. Ms. Thomans Sterns’ leadership as Board Chair of One To World fulfills her dual goals of giving back to New York City while furthering her commitment to international education. “One To World is a rare organization in its ability to address international education in a very New York-centered way. You are giving back to the city while introducing young global leaders to New Yorkers.” ONE TO WORLD 2016 FULBRIGHT AWARDS DINNER | 9 ONE TO WORLD AND THE FULBRIGHT TRADITION ABOUT ONE TO WORLD O ne To World brings Americans together with international university students and Fulbright Scholars through dynamic programs in schools, homes, and businesses, to share their experiences and perspectives in life-changing ways. “I The late Senator J. William Fulbright, who authored the legislation which created his namesake program 70 years ago, specified these services as key components of the Fulbright program. He believed that the time Fulbright grantees spent off-campus would be as important as their academic experiences in fostering cultural understanding, and ultimately, a peaceful world. BELIEVE THAT THERE IS A DIRECT CONNECTION BETWEEN THE QUALITY OF RELATIONSHIPS WHICH INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS DEVELOP WHILE THEY ARE IN THE UNITED STATES, AND THE QUALITY OF THE ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL ALLIANCES THEY WILL MAKE IN THE FOR THIS REASON, I COMMEND METRO INTERNATIONAL [NOW ONE TO WORLD] TO YOU. SENATOR J. WILLIAM FULBRIGHT We are proud to carry on this legacy. “ ONE TO WORLD PROGRAMS ALWAYS LEAVE ME INSPIRED AND HELP ME TO ” UNDERSTAND HOW AMAZING THE This year, over 91,000 international students and scholars from 150 countries are studying at New York-area institutions. One To World makes the most of this priceless opportunity to create understanding and positive relationships with these unofficial ambassadors from all over the world while they are here. AMERICAN COMMUNITY IS! - Pratyusha Guduru Student from India Fairleigh Dickinson University While One To World was founded in 1977 to engage international students in American life, what we have become is so much more: an organization that builds lifelong understanding and respect among people across the globe. One To World is designated by the U.S. Department of State as the official Coordinator of Enrichment Programs for the 1,000 visiting Fulbright grantees studying in the greater New York area each year. ONE TO WORLD 2016 FULBRIGHT AWARDS DINNER | 10 ” YEARS TO COME. (1905 -1995) ne To World is proud to be designated by the U.S. Department of State as the official Coordinator of Enrichment Programs for Fulbright grantees in the greater New York area. O the Fulbright Program by the U.S. Congress in 1946, following World War II. The Senator conceived of this international educational exchange program as a way to prevent future wars. In 1991, we approached Senator J. William Fulbright with the idea of creating a special event to raise the visibility of the Fulbright vision in New York City. With his endorsement and support, our first annual Fulbright Awards Dinner was held that year, and the Senator was honored at the Dinner in 1993. His wife, Harriet Mayor Fulbright, has served as Honorary Chair of the event since his death in 1995, and was herself honored in 2000. As One To World enters our fourth decade of service, our Fulbright Awards Dinner serves as a celebration of Senator Fulbright’s ideals and inspires those present with a renewed commitment to carry on the work he began. Celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, the Fulbright Program provides funds for students, scholars, and professionals to undertake study, research, and teaching abroad in more than 160 countries. Approximately 395,000 individuals—Americans and citizens of other countries—have received Fulbright grants since the program’s inception, with funding provided by Congressional appropriations and partner country governments. Fulbright grants are administered by organizations including the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Department of Education, the Institute for International Education, and the Council for International Exchange of Scholars. In his words, “It doesn’t take many to make a difference. A single leader or a few legislators or writers who know something about what other countries are like can contribute to making a wise decision or to forestalling a disastrous one.” The vision and action of Senator Fulbright led to the creation of Once Fulbright grantees arrive in the New York area from countries across the globe, One To World connects them with Americans through diverse programs in homes, classrooms, businesses, and communities. Our work is essential in furthering the Fulbright vision of peace through international education and understanding.
