Make It A Day In Battle Lake Saturday
“Small Town
Saturday”
Visit downtown Battle Lake
Saturday, November 28 for a
day of fun for family, friends
and Thanksgiving weekend
visitors. The Saturday after
Thanksgiving is both “Small
Town Saturday” and Battle
Lake’s “Home for the Holiday” celebration.
“Home For The
Holidays”
I inadvertently submitted
last year’s “Home for the Holidays” article last week. Here
is what is happening this year!
So sorry. Reba
Saturday afternoon and
evening is the “Home for the
Holidays” celebration sponsored by the Battle Lake Area
Community Fund (BLACF).
Kids can enjoy gingerbread
decorating and other fun activities from 2:30-4:15 p.m. at
Lakes Area Community Center (LACC) at 112 West Main
Street. Decorated gingerbread
people can go home with kids
for them to hang on their holiday trees. Photos from last
year’s gingerbread decorating
and wagon-ride event will be
posted for people to find
themselves in a photo or see
what happened last year.
As the fire truck makes its
way through downtown and
nearby neighborhoods, the
sound of sirens and a waving
Santa announce that the community tree-lighting is about
to begin. The ceremony will
take place at 4:30 p.m. in
“Patio Park” located between
Creative Cuts and CarlsonHighland Accounting. After
royalty does the honor of
lighting the tree, Kathy
LeLoup will lead everyone in
singing holiday favorites.
After the singing, Santa
will be on hand at LACC for
kids to tell him what they want
for Christmas and for everyone to enjoy a holiday treat
and warm up with a hot beverage.
The “Home for the Holidays” event rings in the holiday season in small-town Battle Lake. Take part in this
community-wide celebration.

Join Now The New
Battle Lake Area
Sporting Club
The time has arrived for the Battle Lake area to have its own
“Sportsman’s Club”. The new club will be known as the Battle
Lake Area Sporting Club. This will be a community driven club
promoting and improving hunting, fishing, shooting recreation
and other outdoor sports in the Battle Lake area.
They will need many dedicated men and women of all ages
to help make this a successful and thriving community club. To
get started they are going to have a Membership Drive and Supper Saturday, December 12 at the Lakes Area Community Center in Battle Lake. The meal will start at 6 p.m. with open floor
organization discussion starting at 7 p.m. They will discuss all
ideas, answer questions and talk about the club’s goals and missions at this meeting. Also will have some raffles and giveaways. There will be special prizes for those who join before
Monday, December 7. Also special youth drawings.
2016 Annual Membership (includes the meal): Individuals
$25 a year, couples $40 a year and youth (14-18 years old) $5 a
year. For those with value in mind, a limited amount of Lifetime
Charter Memberships will be available for a one time fee of
$150.
BLASC is very excited about the response we have had
already and hope to see all interested hunting, fishing and outdoor enthusiasts at the Membership Drive.
Remember to mark December 12 on your calendars for the
Battle Lake Area Sporting Club Membership Gathering.
If you have any questions or want to help, work or donate,
please contact one of the following: Arlyn Hustad, Brian Hartmann, Robert Blatti, Darrell Franze or call Gene Kelm 218-2050513.
The idea behind “Small
Town Saturday” is to do some
of your holiday shopping in
Battle Lake to support our
local businesses and economy.
In addition to getting a few
unique and one-of-a-kind gifts
you won’t find at big box
stores on Black Friday or over
the Internet on Cyber Monday,
you can visit with people you
know, see the town dressed up
for the holidays and enjoy
music from the Battle Lake
Review.
Maybe you think there’s no
place to shop in Battle Lake
this time a year. Think again.
• Battle Lake Inn & Suites
(afternoon) has gift certificates for future stays whether
for a holiday or a gift for a
friend or family member next
summer.
• Prospect House Museum
– Take a tour or purchase a
ticket for a future date for you
or someone else. Tours offered
morning and afternoon, but
call ahead to schedule (8644408).
• Seip Drug (9 a.m.-3 p.m.)
has a number of specials and
free cider and coffee all day.
• Galloping Goose (10 a.m.4 p.m.) has gift certificates for
bicycle or water-sports rentals
that family or friends can
enjoy next summer. Bike supplies or something from their
selection of Galloping Goose
Wear might also be a good
choice for someone special.
• Art of the Lakes (10 a.m.4 p.m.) has a gallery full of
one-of-a-kind gift possibilities
from hand-made tree ornaments, to jewelry, cards, mittens, ceramics, glass, books,
paintings and more. Gift certificates available. Open house
with beverages and treats from
11 a.m.-2 p.m.
• Prairie Needles (9 a.m.-5
p.m.) will have lots of great
deals in preparation for closing as a yarn shop the end of
December (to re-emerge as a
housewares store in the
spring).
• Everts Lumber Yard (7:30
a.m. to 12 noon) has gift certificates for those hard to buy
for people in your life. Let
them pick out just what they
need for that project they are
working on.
More ideas and special Small
Town Saturday ads can be
found on pages eight-nine.
New At Craft Fair
The public is invited to attend the Battle Lake Craft Fair Saturday, December 5 at Battle Lake Public School from 9 a.m.-3
p.m. Several new events and activities will be added to the fair
this year. Just For Kix dancers will perform at 11 a.m. This short
performance, under the direction of Karrie Carlson, will take
place in the junior high gym. About 30 dancers in Tiny Kix, Wee
Petites and Mini Kix will perform for a standing audience.
Another new feature of the 2015 craft fair is a fund raiser for
Ronald McDonald House and a card-making station. Battle
Lake students Sydnee and Danica Byrne will sell crafts with all
proceeds going to the Ronald McDonald House. Danica, who is
the NAM Miss Minnesota Junior Pre-Teen, will also set up cardmaking with all the creations going to Cards for Hospitalized
Kids. Everyone is invited to support this great cause.
Gift-wrapping, a new service at the craft fair, will be available throughout the day at the concession stand in the school
lobby. Proceeds from the gift wrapping service will help fund
the Battle Lake Choir on its trip to New York to perform at
Carnegie Hall. And while searching for unique gifts, shoppers
will be serenaded by the talented members of the Battle Lake
Choir!
Come to the craft fair hungry! Battle Lake sixth graders will
serve lunch all day in the cafeteria. Proceeds will fund their trip
to the Minnesota State Capitol. Freshly baked chocolate chip
cookies will also be available in the high school hallway. Proceeds from cookie sales will fund BPA.
Book lovers should browse through Stevie’s Used Book
Store. Gently used books for all ages will be available. Proceeds
from Stevie’s Used Book Store fund the purchase of new books
for the Battle Lake School Library.
The junior high gym, cafeteria and school hallways will be
filled with vendors providing unique handmade items and products from home businesses. Many of the shopper-favorites from
previous fairs are returning as well as several new vendors.
The admission fee for the craft fair is $1 for adults and FREE
for children 12 years and younger. All proceeds benefit the students of Battle Lake Public School.
IRS Phone Scams
The IRS has seen a recent increase in local phone scams
across the country, with callers pretending to be from the IRS in
hopes of stealing money or identities from victims.
These phone scams include many variations, ranging from
instances from where callers say the victims owe money or are
entitled to a huge refund. Some calls can threaten arrest and
threaten a driver’s license revocation. Sometimes these calls are
paired with follow-up calls from people saying they are from the
local police department or the state motor vehicle department.
Characteristics of these scams can include:
• Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They
generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
• Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
• Scammers “spoof” or imitate the IRS toll-free number on
caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
• Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
• Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or a driver’s license
revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID
supports their claim.

Lakeland Home Care celebrated its 30th Anniversary on
Wednesday with an open
house at their offices in the
Eisenhower complex at 805
East Channing Ave in Fergus
Falls. Lakeland Home Care
began in 1985 as Lake Region
Home Health Care, part of the
Lake Region Healthcare system. In 2006 it merged with
Lakeland Hospice to become
Lakeland Hospice and Home
Care.
In 2012 Lakeland Hospice
and Home Care merged with
LB Homes to become Lakeland Home Care, part of the
LB Homes spectrum of services.
Earlier this year Lakeland
Home Care earned a four star
rating as a home health care
provider on the Medicare rating system. The four stars
show consumers how the performance of a home health
agency compares to other
agencies. Agencies get a rating from 1 to 5 stars, with 1
being the lowest score and 5
Battle Lake Review

representing the highest performance. Agencies get more
stars when they follow recommended care practices for
more patients, and when more
of their patients show
improvement.
The quality of patient care
star rating summarizes each
agency's performance on average across nine of the quality
measures reported on Home
Health Compare. These measures were selected to give a
general overview of agency
performance on measures that
apply to the most people. A 4
or 5-star rating means that the
agency performed better than
other agencies on the measured care practices and outcomes.
Executive Director of Lakeland Home Care and Lakeland
Hospice, Becky Odden commented that “LB Homes is
proud to celebrate the 30th
Anniversary of Lakeland
Home Care and their longstanding quality care delivery
to patients in Fergus Falls and
the surrounding area. I am
proud and thankful for each
staff member on our Home
Care Team. They are dedicated, knowledgeable and skilled
in providing compassionate
care in the homes of our
patients. We continually strive
to improve and provide services which help people recover
or live with illness or
decreased abilities within their
homes. We are thankful for
each patient we serve and for
the medical providers who
refer them to our care.”
Lakeland Home Care specializes in home nursing care
including LPN, RN, and Aide
visits, occupational, physical
and speech therapies, medication set ups, in-home safety
checks, wound V.A.C.s and
more.

IRS Scam
(continued from page one)
In another variation, one sophisticated phone
scam has targeted taxpayers, including recent
immigrants, throughout the country. Victims
are told they owe money to the IRS and it must
be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit
card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to
cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest,
deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes
hostile and insulting.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should
do: If you know you owe taxes or you think
you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 800-8291040. The IRS employees at that line can help
you with a payment issue – if there really is
such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no
reason to think that you owe any taxes (for
example, you’ve never received a bill or the
caller made some bogus threats as described
above), then call and report the incident to the
Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 800-366-4484.
If you’ve been targeted by these scams, you
should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant”
at FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam"
to the comments of your complaint.

Giving Up on Self-Help
T
he self-help section is one of the largest sections in most bookstores.
But the fact that there is no end to the publishing of books on a variety
of self-help topics, from dieting and money management to relationships and careers suggests that the advice given isn’t terribly effective. If selfhelp books really helped, wouldn’t there be an end to it, or perhaps even just
one big, final edition of the Last Self-Help Book? David Brooks suggests in
his book “The Road to Character” that the problem with the notion of selfhelp is relying on ourselves. We keep falling back on the same method,
which is to think that we can solve our own problems. To quote the comic
strip character Pogo, “We have met the enemy and he is us.” Human
resourcefulness and resilience are impressive, but they can only go so far in
solving our problems. God’s resourcefulness, on the other hand, is infinite,
because His is the world and its fullness. Our resources are limited; God’s are
unlimited. The danger of relying too much on your own resources is that, to
quote C.S. Lewis, “You may forget that you are at every moment totally
dependent on God.” So throw out all those self-help books and ask God to
help you out. He’s always there and He is your best hope.
My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.

Psalm 121:2
Key To Happiness
by Pastor Paul Twist
Lakes Community Church
PO Box 92 • Clitherall, MN 56524
www.lakescommunitychurch.org
I am very grateful a day is set aside each year as a national day
of Thanksgiving. But even if it were not, as Christians we are
exhorted from scripture to live in a spirit of thankfulness.
The Apostle Paul in his epistle to Colossian Christians said,
“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to
live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith
as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness” (Colossians 2:6-7).
Even though his letter was written about 1,955 years ago, it is
God’s Word, and is just as important today. The Christian life is
to be lived out in daily thanksgiving, and especially on Thanksgiving Day.
The call to set aside a special day of thankfulness contrasts
sharply with the fact that less and less gratitude is being
expressed these days. One of the saddest scriptures in the Bible
is a stern warning given to those living in what the Bible calls
the “last days.”
The Apostle Paul warned the young pastor Timothy, “But
mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People
will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud,
abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without
love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not
lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—having a form of godliness but
denying its power” (2 Timothy 3:1-5). Notice that the word
‘”ungrateful” is included.
As a teenage boy I thought of Thanksgiving as driving 100
miles to my grandparents’ farm to spend time with my five
cousins and eat lots of tasty food prepared by my grandmother
and aunts. I’ve since learned that real thanksgiving is first of all a special
time of heartfelt gratitude to God for all the spiritual blessings I
receive by faith in Christ as revealed in the Bible.
A truer sense of the word thanksgiving is found in Colossians
1:10-12, ”. . . That you may live a life worthy of the Lord and
may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work,
growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all
power according to his glorious might so that you may have
great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the
Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the
saints in the kingdom of light.”
I’m also reminded of the first day of Thanksgiving the Pilgrims held at Plymouth in 1621, thanking God for a good harvest and for His protection. One of the group was George Soule,
a teenage servant I am privileged to be related to on my mother’s side of the family.
Music for the Christmas Season
Tis the season for music and celebration as Christmas
draws near. The Federated Church is performing “Images of
Adoration” Saturday, December 5 at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
The cantata features the Federated Church choir, a community orchestra and organist Carol Andstrom. “Images of Adoration” is written by Pepper Choplin. “We all enjoy the beauty
of Christmas - the music and candles, the greenery and crimson flowers, the holy symbols of the manger and the star. The
presence of these symbols draws us into the story of Christmas each year, reminding us of the power, simplicity and
awesome significance of the birth of the Christ Child.” The
performance concludes with the singing of Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus” and the audience will be invited to join the choir.
The event begins simply - like a blank canvas. Gradually
the music comes up, candles are lit, wreaths are hung and
through the course of the concert, a masterpiece is created.
“Christmas traditions and
symbols are so personal and
bring back memories of
Zion
Christmas past,” said Karen
Hauck, choral director at

Federated Church and of the
of Amor
cantata.

Thanksgiving Reflections…
Reflections of this, another
year nearly past can include
many things. Not the least of
them should be a deep gratitude
to God for His bountiful provision.
In the midst of an economic
slow-down, being pessimistic and
casual in our approach to this
year’s Thanksgiving holiday
would not be too difficult.
However, the Psalmist David in
his 100th Psalm suggests a lessthan-casual approach to Thanksgiving. Consider his exclamations: “Shout for joy to the Lord, all
the earth. Worship before Him
with gladness—come before Him
with joyful songs. Know that the
Lord is God, it is He who made
us, and we are His people, the
sheep of His pasture.
Enter into His gates with
thanksgiving and his courts with
praise—give thanks to him and
praise his Name. For the Lord is
good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues
through all generations.” Psalm
100: 1-5, NIV
Do you feel the gratitude the
Psalmist must have felt as he
penned those words? It’s hard to
read those words without feeling
the deep gratitude and emotion
that must have been in his heart.
It is good to feel that kind of
gratitude and healthy to express
that level of emotion toward God
and others. It is good to give
thanks!
395 years ago, the Pilgrim
Fathers celebrated Thanksgiving
for the first time on these shores.
The bitter, tragic winter of 1620
had taken its toll. By spring, there
were 46 new graves on the little
hill overlooking Plymouth Village.
Of the 100 brave souls who
came over on the Mayflower, half
were dead. But now the first harvest had come. The sun was shining—the American Indians were
friendly and the survivors were
determined to render thanks to
God for his gracious provision.
When you stop to think about it
that must be one of the secrets of
America’s greatness. This month
throughout America, we will
observe another Thanksgiving
holiday.
Family and friends will gather
together—turkeys will be roasted—dressing will be made and
cranberry salads of all kinds will
be put on long tables next to candied sweet potatoes and mountains of mashed potatoes and
giblet gravy.
If you are like me, you can
almost taste it. Thanksgiving is a
festive time. It is a time when
memories are enjoyed and
shared. It is also a time when
people enjoy special times of fellowship with one-another—and,
of course, in our culture, it is a
time to watch a football game!
But most of all—it is a day for
us to remember some important
things, and be thankful as those
early Pilgrims remind us.
It is therefore especially significant that we, their descendants,
continue to recognize the source
of our immeasurable blessings
just as they did as we thank God
for Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of
Happiness.
In my reflections of this past
year, I too have much for which to
be grateful. One of the great challenges we have as care givers,
and for which a great deal of gratitude is felt, is the privilege of caring for residents who have come
to call Good Sam—“home.” What
a blessing it is to be able to serve
these who have labored for us so
many of these past years. How
difficult this work would be without the dedicated and loving
group of co-workers who give
large blocks of their time and lives
to share in this loving ministry.
We are mindful of the many
kind and gracious volunteers who
give generously of their time without any pretense. How cold and
lonely a home would be without
their caring service.
We salute the many professionals who team-up with us in
meeting the health care needs of
our residents—physicians and
their staffs, hospitals care workers, dental & vision agencies and
many other service agencies that
assist with services to the elderly
living among us.
We salute the churches with
their dedicated pastors and constituents providing spiritual counseling, encouragement and worship opportunities for our residents.
We are grateful for the community at large for their support
and involvement in the lives of all
of the seniors citizens living
among us.
To all, linking arms together—
meeting needs of people everywhere, we express our sincere
thanks.
Finally, we all should be thankful most of all to God, from who
cometh “every good and perfect
gift.” The giving of thanks on this
2015 Thanksgiving season also
includes a hearty thanks to you
readers and our best wishes for a
“Happy Thanksgiving” and a
blessed year following.
Campus news
The Eagle Lake Lutheran
“Girls” were at it again this past
Tuesday. Campus residents were
treated to a very tasty homemade
pumpkin dessert topped with
“real” whipping cream. The delicious treat was just the thing to lift
spirits on a rather damp and
gloomy day. Thanks Eagle Lake
“girls.”
A large contingent of campus
residents were guest visitors to
the dress rehearsal of the ‘Mary
Poppins’ performance of the Battle Lake High School. Attending
the performance were Eunice
Swedberg, Marcia Lee, Jack and
Shirley Neese, Arlen and Marge
Naylor, Mary Lou Stickel, Carol
Charest, Lorraine Bjorke, Lorraine Lykken, Ione Peterson, Earl
Peterson, Sharon Twete, LuJean
Juvrud, Grace Norberg, Millie
Wilde and Mary Stoller.
They presented a stunning
performance of this all-time classic. Residents were enthralled
with the costuming and outstanding choral and acting ability of the
students. This is another example
of the terrific students we have at
our Battle Lake School and the
terrific leadership by the schools
administration and staff. ..
Accompanying campus residents were staff members, Jennifer Nickolite, Linda Nine, Tammy
Carlson, Shelly Sagerhorn. It was
obvious from the smiles and
expressions on faces of those
attending this artistic event, that it
was a special pleasure for each
one. What a blessing it is to have
a Five Star school right in our
community and be able to enjoy
outstanding productions such as
this classic.
Another ‘five-star’ event was
enjoyed Thursday noon. A special
Thanksgiving celebration potluck
was hosted by Good Sam Auxiliary and staff.
A delicious turkey dinner was
served by the dietary department
to residents, their families and
staff, with auxiliary and staff providing a special salad or dessert.
From the smiles and satisfied
looks on faces of residents, staff
and guests—this proved to be
another outstanding event that
will be needed to repeated again
next year.
The week ended with some
marvelous music provided by
Marge Hanson sharing vocal and
instrumental accordion golden
oldies.

Minneapolis where she obtained

Assistant Studies. For the past
eight years, she worked at Lakewood Health System in Staples

“My philosophy is that every patient is different and has a
unique story to tell,” stated Annalise. “By really listening to my
patients, I hope that I can find ways to improve their quality of
life. I enjoy all aspect of family medicine that practicing in a
small town offers. I love being able to see the entire family and
really get a feel for where one person’s story originates and
another story ends.”
Annalise has been married to her husband, Aaron, for 12 years
and has three children; Sadie (10), Carter (7), and Lilliana (5). In
her free time she enjoys family time at the lake, nature, reading,
crafting, and playing volleyball and games.
“I’m excited to be back home,” Annalise added. “I hope to be
able to help Perham Health grow and flourish by finding ways to
improve the patient experience and population health outcomes.
I look forward to becoming a part of the community.”
To make an appointment with Annalise, call the Perham
Health Clinic at 218.347.1200.
Perham Health is a 25-bed Critical Access Hospital with three
primary care clinics, a 96-bed nursing home, home care agency,
adult day services, and senior housing. The medical staff consists of 27 physicians, 8 advance practice providers, and 3 chiropractors. Visit perhamhealth.org to learn more.

Chuckle…spot the big turkey!
A lady was picking through the frozen turkeys at the grocery store,
but couldn’t find one big enough for her family. She asked the stock
boy, “Do these turkey’s get any bigger?” The stock boy answered, “No,
ma’am, they’re dead!”
Ode to Thanksgiving—
May your stuffing be tasty-- May your turkey be plump—May your
potatoes and gravy, have nary a lump. May your yams be delicious—
And your pies take the prize—And may your Thanksgiving
dinner…..stay off your thighs!

SUDOKU... Fun By The Numbers!
Nov. 25th Puzzle
Here’s How It Works:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3
boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row,
column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column
and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by
using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers
you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Thanksgiving Traditions by Underwood 3rd Grade
Mrs. Hoekstra’s class—
Addisyn Bertrand
We love Thanksgiving. we
go to my mom’s twin sister’s
house. We sped the nght the
day before Thanksgiving.
Before we go to bed we play
with the dogs, Jackson and
Tyson. My Grandpa and
Grandma, aunts and uncle,
cousins and parents and sibling come for Thanksgiving.
Great grandparents bring
turkey, potatoes, salad and
veggies. We play with the dog
after eating. Sometimes we go
outside to play with the dog.
Sometimes we stay inside and
play in the room that they
have for us. That is why I love
Thanksgiving.
On Thanksgiving we take
turns where we go to for
Thanksgiving. We sometimes
go to Mike and Tory’s (which
is my aunt and uncles). We
sometimes stay at our home
too. We also sometimes go to
my grandma and grandpa’s.
We eat lots of foods such as
turkey, stuffing, potatoes,
salad and other foods. I have
my own little tradition: I don’t
eat much turkey, I eat mostly
stuffing. After we’re done eating, we usually are full and we
take naps. Usually after our
naps we watch football then
we play board games and
watch movies. Those are my
Thanksgiving traditions. What
are yours?
by Dawson Stundahl
I want to start by saying
that we celebrate Thanksgiving in a number of place, usully at my grandparent’s house.
Either the Stundahl’s or the
Tackett’s and at times the
Henry’s. We celebrate with
my grandparents, uncles,
aunts, cousins and sometimes
in laws of the family. We normally eat turkey but at times
ham or both. But one of my
most favorite dishes is just
plain old lefse. Since we are
Norwegian we like have lefse.
So at dinner time we help set
up the dining room table for
many, many people. Then
before we eat Great Uncle
Dan says, “good bread, good
meat good God, let’s eat”.
Then we clean the dishes. It
was fun.
Madison Johnson
Every Thanksgiving my
whole family eats proper food
like turkey, mashed potatoes,
stuffing and ham. I help my
Grandma make the turkey. We
stand in a circle and say what
we are thankful for. When we
are done I play with my toys
while the rest of my family
watches football.
Kaiden Peterson
Every Thanksgiving we all
go gather up at Grandma’s
house. When we get there
most of us go outside. I play
football with Christin. Then
when we are done Grandpa
puts up music and we all go
inside to eat. When we are
done we go in the livingroon
and get these numbers. when
Grandma calls your number
you go and pick a gif. Sometimes the are a trick. Last year
Heidi put melted chocoalet ina
diaper and then she ended up
with it. Thanksgiving is a lot
of fun.
Eric Fick
Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday! First, after we get
up, we have to dress nice.
Then we eat breakfast and my
mom says, “try not to get your
shirt dirty!” Then we get in the
car and the drive seems forever! When we arrive at my
Mom’s Grandmas, we usually
talk while the food cooks.
When the food is done whe
make a circle and pray. Then
we eat turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans,
squash, cranberry sauce and a
bunch of salads. For dessert
we eat pumpkin pie. When we
finish eating we talk some
more, watch football and then
we go to Battle Lake and see
some more cousins and aunts
and uncles. Then we go to a
different house and play,
watch more football and
sometimes have an airsoft war
and ride our four wheeler.
Then we go inside and play
some more before we go
home. Sometimes watch the
Nascar race and more football
then go to bed. After a long
day it feels good to sleep.
Sofia Sand
Thanksgiving is fantastic!
Caleb Olson
We get up at 5:00. I get
excited to go to Fargo with
cousins, uncles, aunts, friends
and family. When we get there
we play in the basement and
watch movies. The older people watch football. When the
food is done we eat turkey,
stuffing, mashed potatoes,
gravy, green beans, ham,
coleslaw. Then we play some
more. Sometimes we have
birhdays on Thanksgiving. We
play more. At 9:00 we go to
bed.
Memphis Rueckert
I love Thanksgiving. In the
morning we eat mashed potatoes, turkey and for dessert we
have hotdogs and pumpkn pie.
In the afternoon we watch TV
and Netflix. We play
boardgames and video games.
The show we watach is called
Goosebumps and we watch
youtubs. I like Thanksgiving.
Landon Karsnia
I like Thanksgiving. Every
year we get to go to my gradma’s house. We are the last
ones to be there. We watch
football before we eat. We eat
turkey, stuffing, pie, potatoes,
gravy and ice cream. After we
eat we tell stories watch
movies and play games. Then
we go to the mill in the gator.
It is awesome!
Aria Chatters
I like Thanksgiving! On
Thanksgiving day we wait for
everyone to get to Nanas. Me,
mom, dad and Ajalon are
sometimes first to Nanas. The
second ones are cousins, aunts
and uncles. We eat turkey and
ham, lefsa, mashed potatoes
and stuffing. For dessert we
have jello and frog eyes. After
we eat, the kids play tag and
the adults play cards and
watch football. Sometimes the
kids play cards too.
Jaxon Swonger
Thanksgiving is a great holiday! We eat pancakes for
breakfist then my cousins and
I go pla in the baseement until
lunch. We have turkey with
gravy, bread and mashed potatoes. When we are done my
uncles mom and dad watch the
football game until dinner.
Then we go to bed. The next
morning we go home. Thanksgiving is the best holiday!
Addison Lanoue
I love Thanksgiving. On
Thanksgiving we get ready to
go to Grandma Jolene’s house.
When we get there we see
cousins, aunts and uncles. We
watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and play with
cousins. When the food is
made we pray and then eat the
delicious meal of turkey, ham,
wild rice, mashed potatoes,
veggie tray, scalloped potatoes, corn, sweet potatoes,
salds and buns. When grandma is bakeing various desserts
we play a game and when it is
done we have some. When we
are done the kid play together
while the growups are watching the football game. Then
we all go home. That is why I
love Thanksgiving.
Leo Bye
I love Thanksgiving. We
first get ready to go to grandma’s house. Then we play

Day baskets for two families in need in our community.
They had full meals in them including turkeys, stuffing,
mashed potatos, vegetables, pumpkin pies and even plates,
handmade placemats and a table centerpeice. Liz Ulschmid,
local social worker came and picked them up to bring to the
families. Nice work girls! Submitted photo

Does Make A
Difference ....
Your dollars do make a difference. Where you
spend your hard earned money has a significant impact on your community. It can even
affect your own employment. For every dollar
you spend with a locally owned business seventy-percent of that dollar goes back into the
local economy. When you spend a dollar at an
out-of-state owned company over sixty-percent
leaves the state. The more money that stays
here, the better off we all are. When you show
the Choose Local card you are stating that you
support locally owned businesses. These businesses appreciate your support by providing
you an instant benefit of reduced prices, or free
upgrades, or some other offer.
$38.80 Locally ....
Shopping
Employs your neighbors, reducing their carbon footprints as well. Another benefit to shopping locally that's often overlooked is the impact it can have on your neighbors' carbon footprint. Local businesses often employ members of the
community, which translates to shorter commutes, less highway congestion and less fuel consumption. So while shopping locally reduces your carbon footprint, it's also helping members of your community reduce their own potentially
negative impact on the environment.

“What Freedom Means to
Me”, Patriot’s Pen Competition by Fern Brackin
To many, freedom is simply
being able to vote, voice our
opinions, and make our own
choices; to me, freedom is
much more than that.
Freedom is being able walk
outside of your home and
breathe in fresh air. It’s walking down the sidewalk to enjoy
the view and seeing fellow citizens doing the very same.
Freedom is not having to be
afraid of becoming a prisoner
for disobeying ridiculous laws.
It’s going to a baseball game
and listening to the National
Anthem before doing anything
else. Freedom is what our soldiers fight long and hard for.
Freedom is something worth
celebrating.
Eighty nine countries are
free, but none of them quite
like The United States of
America, where every person
takes so much pride in their
freedom that you’re able to see
it wherever you go. Schools
have an American flag hanging
in numerous classrooms. Many
restaurants have flagpoles right
out front along with other public buildings. There are also
plenty of monuments dedicated
to the uncountable veterans
that gave their life for our freedom.
If I didn’t have the basic
human rights that our government gives us, I wouldn’t be
able to do many of the things I
enjoy. For example: in China,
they have The Great Firewall
that blocks the many internet
users from exploring all of the
wonders of the World Wide
Web so they won’t speak out
against the government. If I
lived with that obstacle, I
wouldn’t have many of the
friends I currently have.
In conclusion, freedom
means many things. It means
making your own choices,
being able to voice your opinions, and having the ability to
chase your dreams by whatever
means necessary. I will always
be grateful for the infinitely
brave veterans that risked their
lives, some giving their lives,
for my freedom. To me, freedom means everything.
“What do I think of America?” Spencer Koltes, Voice
of Democracy winner.
Well, I think every citizen in
the United States of America
should have the same values,
thoughts, and feelings for not
only the country, but what has
gotten it to be so great and
magnificent in the world. It’s
truly the best country to live in.
No wonder so many immigrants have come here, both
legally and illegally. But this
speech that I’m giving is going
to tell you is what my vision
for America is.
Now the first thing that I
think of America as is free.
Americans are indeed free. The
first amendment says that all
Americans have the freedom of
speech, and press. So we can
legally say our minds. Sometimes it gets us into a bit of
mischief in arguments or even
fights, but it’s legal to do so.
Most Americans take for granted what we have in this great
country. We can go wherever
we want, when we want. We
can become whatever we
desire in colleges around the
country without someone else
deciding for us, or becoming
what our ancestors were
through passing the job down.
We the people in America can
decide that for ourselves.
Whatever we decide to do, like
travel across the country for a
vacation, to just going to the
theater for a movie, we don’t
have to worry if we can do that
without the government’s permission, we can just do it. All
because we broke off and
established in our Constitution
that we’re free, and I’m proud
to live in a country that’s free,
and freedom is one of my
visions I have for America.
Another thing I think of that
makes this country so great is
our military and allies. We
make up the U.N. which has
triumphed since President
Franklin D. Roosevelt in
WWII established it to continue fighting together against the
Axis Powers. Even before we
got our independence, our
founding fathers were fighting
to the death just to be free. And
when Korea broke out for communism in the North, we
weren’t going to have that, and
neither was South Korea. So
we fought with them to fight
communism. Now we go wherever we’re needed to help our
allies and those in need. In the
last decade we’ve been fighting against world terrorism,
which is now so huge because
of new recent terrorist groups
like ISIS. But we’ll win in the

end. That’s what America does,
is win,because of what we
stand for, and that is another
vision that I have for America.

Family Medicine
Welcome a new addition to your Perham Health team.
I enjoy all aspects of family medicine that practicing in a small
town offers. Every patient is different and has a unique story to
tell. I love being able to see the entire family and really get a feel
for where one person’s story originates and another story ends.
