1 April 2015 - 1 april 2016 Welcome to Gouda “Step into this world and discover the historic town centre with its centuries-old history.” 2 Welcome to Gouda Gouda is inextricably associated with its famous cheese, one of the most important and wellknown export products of the Netherlands. On Thursday mornings, from April to and including August, the past repeats itself. Visitors can witness the ins and outs of cheese trading at the Gouda Cheese Market. But the town is also known around the world for its treacle waffles, the Gouda pipes and Gouda ceramics. Gouda candles proudly burn every year during the popular Gouda by Candlelight festival. Step into this world and discover the historic town centre with its centuries-old history. Admire the picturesque town hall, the famous stained-glass windows of Sint-Janskerk (St. John’s Church) and the atmospheric canals with their sidewalk cafes. The Gouda Tourist Information Office (VVV) is there to help! You will find us on the Markt (the central market square), in the Goudse Waag. There, you can choose from a variety of street plans and hiking and bicycle routes. The friendly staff will gladly tell you about Gouda and provide information about its culture, history, night life, overnight stays, shopping and fun activities with children. This brochure points the way to some of the town’s highlights. Tourist information about Gouda now available for tablets and smart phones You can now access the website www.welcometogouda.com by tablet or smart phone. Once you have tasted the delights of Gouda, literally and figuratively, you might never want to leave. Welcome to Gouda! Wander through the town and visit the many charming courtyards, the oldest of which stems from 1449. These tranquil sanctuaries in the town traditionally provided housing for the elderly where one can drift off, far from the hectic world of the present. The handsome archways and neat gardens with plants and flowers are a pleasure to behold. On the reverse side of this brochure is a street plan showing the most interesting places of the city. At the VVV you will also find various maps, hiking and bicycle routes, such as the Gouda Specialities route, Discover Gouda’s harbour area and the Cow-Cheese bicycle route. You can also find several routes in the ‘xplre Gouda app’ . Culture & History Gouda is an imposing, historic town. In the town centre one can see much of Gouda’s rich history and versatile culture - from historic buildings to museums and galleries with modern art. “Gouda is an imposing, historic town!” 4 The Town Hall 1 During the summer of 1438, a devastating fire reduced the then town of Gouda virtually to ashes. The town hall suffered heavy damage. The town council decided that the new town hall should be freestanding. It chose a new location on the market field, which was little more than a sodden peat bog at the time. Feel free to visit the Town Hall with its magnificent wedding room, the mayor’s office and council chamber. On the right facing wall you can see the carillon with mechanical puppets, which were added in 1961. The leading figure in the carillon is Floris V, who granted Gouda its town charter in 1272. Every two minutes of each half hour, the carillon will provide a lovely spectacle, as the puppets begin to move. It was named after John the Baptist, the patron saint of Gouda. With its 123 metres, it is the longest church in the Netherlands. The church is also world renowned for its Gouda glass. These stained-glass windows, particularly those from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, display scenes from the Bible and from Dutch history. Many medieval towns did their best to build the highest church in the land, but in Gouda’s soft soil length was the better choice. If you stand in the centre of the church, you can experiece the building’s enormous proportions. Majestic pillars have supported this church for centuries. If only these pillars could talk! in the window. You can see the images of bishops, Golden Fleece Knights and even kings such as Philip II of Spain and Mary Tudo of England. Because many people could not read, a type of pictography was employed that everyone at the time understood. The dog, a symbol of faithfulness, reappears in some 20 windows. However, at the foot of the corrupt king Herodes lies a bear - symbol of iniquity and sin. What a remarkable historical depiction one can ‘read’ in the stained-glass windows of Sint-Janskerk. GOUDA GLASS IS WORLD RENOWNED When you stand outside you see dark, almost black windows. It is precisely these church windows that form the greatest treasure of Sint-Janskerk. Their full glory is revealed the moment you enter the church. The Gouda Glass, as the 72 stained-glass windows are called, were mainly made in the 16th century. They depict Biblical and historical events in comic strip form. THE SECRET BEHIND THE WINDOW: COME, HAVE A LOOK! Traditional Dutch craftsmanship of four centuries ago can still be admired today. It is rather remarkable that something as vulnerable as glass somehow survived all those years of storms and wars. In the exposition there is an explanation of how that happened and how, fortunately, one managed to preserve the Gouda Glass until this very day. QUEENS AND BEARS As it was quite expensive to make stainedglass windows, wealthy clergymen and nobles were invited to sponsor a window. In return, their images were prominently engrained Visitors who want to see Sint-Janskerk on Sundays can only do so by attending a church service, at 10.00 or at 17.00 hours. For the concert schedule, church tours and topical information, see www.sintjan.com. “Winner of Tripadvisor Travellers Choice Award 2014!” 5 de GOUDSe waag | Cheese and Crafts Museum 2 This authentic building, designed in 1668 by architect Pieter Post, is also the location of the Gouda Tourist Information Office (VVV).
