Historic Lifeboat Model Found
“Eliza Fernley” Southport Lifeboat 1874
Rare, One-of-a-Kind Model
Southport Lifeboats were huge, 34’ pulling craft with minor sail, requiring a
crew of 16 men! They stood at ready in boathouses on specially made horse
wagons, which would pull them down to the beaches, as needed. January
1874, a new boat, the “Eliza Fernley” was dedicated. She remained in service
until 1886. On the 9th. of December, the last call out of the Eliza Fernley
proved to be one of the most tragic lifeboat disasters ever known. The
German barque “Mexico,” on her way to South America got into difficulty
during a fierce storm, and went aground at Ainsdale, where an immense
wave crashed down onto the open lifeboat filling and sinking her immediately. She rose keel upwards and failed to right herself. The crew of sixteen did
not stand a chance, and only two men survived. The Eliza Fernley was taken
back to the boathouse and condemned after 12 years service. This is an historical model that found it’s way to us on a very circuitous route that we’re
proud to have for sale! Fully rigged, built of wood and painted, it’s all there,
including a sea anchor! A dozen sweeps (oars), along with two spares,
mast, all the lines and blocks and belaying pins. The carriage is a little
rickety, but functional. A stunning, beautiful, and historical model
that is 74” long with a beam of 19 ½”. The carriage has 10”Ø front and
16ӯ rear, wooden, spoke
wheels with rubber tyres. A
spectacular museum piece!

all this our rare ship model catalog, if you will.
You’ll be taken by the stunning “builder’s
models” that I scored in England, on my recent trip!
Unusual vehicle types and makes, along with ship
models, have long been my passion. To this end, since
we’re all getting older, most notably our makers, it
took a year of scrambling to get this awesome collection of ship models together! Then I thought, since I
am very fond of obscure military vehicles, and I had
found a great array of European rarities along with
American goodies, all in workable 1:43 scale, I should
crowd the pages with them too. Oh yes.., submarines!
Found a bunch of the world’s submarines in very limited numbers. I think you’ll love this catalog, even if
you only use it as a reference work! Of course, we’ll
have a bunch of tin toys, wind-ups, and gorgeous
larger scale car models too. Contained herein is everything a toy junkie could want, from prince to pauper,
so spend every last cent you have, because I doubt I’ll
ever scratch together an assortment such as this again.
cheers, Justus & Crew

Editions ATLAS Collections, Switzerland 1:350 scale
This collection of WW-II submarines was made for the Swiss in
China, and they’re exquisite, as you’d expect from Swiss taskmasters! Heavy, die-cast metal construction with cut-away detailing on
the starboard side of each model, to give you a taste of the insides.
These are the best production model subs we’ve ever seen! There
are only 13 models in the series, and if I were you, I’d buy the
entire set.., yup, they’re that fine. These models were hard to come
by, and we could only get 10 of each model, so you’d better hurry. They measure up to 14”, weigh in at over a pound.
Cut-away detailing on the starboard side of each model.

dash, and highly detailed deck hardware. Mounted on its own stand. measures 25 ¼” x 7 ¾” x 7 ½” overall

Architectura Navalis, Switzerland
I became acquainted with Charles Akesson after seeing a bunch of models he was responsible for at the Musée national
de la Marine, in Paris. Charli lives on Lake Constance in Switzerland, and has watched and became enamored of the
beautiful old side-wheelers that ply the Swiss lakes. The Swiss regard these old vessels a part of their national heritage,
and love and baby them to the tune of millions per year. They’re not just for tourists.., these ships carry mail, packages,
and commuters, on a schedule as tight as the railroads. Kept as clean as grandma’s parlor, some are over 100 years old
and still in service, the pride of Swiss transportation. Charli is our source for the finest miniature ship models in the
world. Here’s a select that took two years to assemble.
Normandie 1:1250 scale Built by Société Anonyme Chantiers de Penhoët and launched 1932, and entered
service with the French Line 1935, as the largest and fastest passenger ship in the world. Total luxury! She was
never a success, although she held the Blue Riband twice. Seized by US authorities in 1942, she caught fire and
capsized at Pier 88 on the Hudson River in New York. Too expensive to repair, she was scrapped 1946. Carried
1,972 passengers, 1029’ length, 117.9’ beam, 79,280 GRT. 11 ½” long ARR030 $629.50
Loch Rannoch 1:1250 scale A double hulled crude oil/shuttle tanker, flying the British flag, built 1998
by Daewoo Heavy Industries, Korea. 885’ length, 151’ beam, 75,526 GRT. 10 ½” long ARN008 $589.50
TS Bremen 1:1250 scale Built by Deutsche Schiff-und Maschinenbau 1928. On her maiden voyage in 1929,

catapult between the two funnels, with a Heinkel HE12 floatplane, that flew 11,000 pieces of mail into New York,
before landing. 2139 passengers, 938.6’ length, 101.9’ beam, 55,600 tons. 10 ¾” long ARR028 $599.50
SS Shahamah 1:1250 scale This monster LNG carrier, was built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. at the

Mirror Backed Builder’s Model
As you must know, ship’s hulls are bi-laterally symmetrical. Ergo it is typical that only a half-hull was carved to check
the lines. Ditto with planking or plating models. All half hulls, since both sides had to be the same. What usually distinguished a builder’s model from a boardroom model, in the late 19th and early 20th century, is the builder’s model
was half of the complete ship mounted on a mirror, giving the uncanny illusion of a complete ship. Only when you
step to the end of the case, and carefully look, you’ll see that it’s only a half. Fantastic! Our very favorite optical delusion… The further advantage being half the width, and you may place the case against, or mount it on the wall, without losing any of the optics. Boardroom models usually sat on their own tables, in the middle of an expansive
boardroom. (This model is quite large, so space matters).

CMC Exclusive Modelle Cars in 1:18 scale, Stuttgart, Germany
Since 1995, when CMC brought out their very first model car, Count Carlo Trossi’s “Black Prince”, we have been
championing the company for producing absolutely the finest small-scale model cars in the world. Period! Winners of
more than 30 international 1st prizes for the best model cars made, seems to justify what we’ve said from day one.
Drawn in Germany by Herbert Nickerl, and made by hand in China under the direction of the company’s chief,
Shuxiao Jia, quality isn’t a question. In fact, every xenophobe should be ashamed for bashing “Made in China”, as if
making stuff in a country other than ours is a bad thing! Just imagine, if you are able, an aluminum wheel rim, 7/8” Ø,
with cross-laced stainless spokes, where each spoke has a spoke nipple where it attaches to the rim. That defines not
only quality, but also a great deal of pride. Just imagine a model 9 ½” long made of zinc, stainless steel, leather, wood,
rubber, chrome, nickel, and brass, consisting of well over 1100 individual pieces, and that’s what you get in every one of
these exquisite models. (Try making them in the USA, and go broke). Worth twice the price, for sure.

One of the very last makers of hand-built 1:43 scale cars,
Brooklin models are cast in white metal, often involving

They’re all limited edition cars! Just put one in your hand

Fabulous, highly polished, cast aluminum model of a

A SHORT HISTORY
In the world of miniature model race cars, B. B. Korn Specialty Products Mfg. Co. (of Los Angeles) products
were the elite! Design, durability, and craftsmanship were second to none. These cars are still highly sought after
by novice and advanced collectors alike. If any miniature race car had a "magical" aura, one would have to consider the B. B. Korn Indianapolis a likely prospect. At 20 ½” long, the “Indy” was a large car. The first “Indy”
cars, produced in 1940, were cast aluminum with louvered sheet aluminum hoods and belly pan. These were topof-the-line cars and so were their prices, at $49.50, less engine!
A subsequent version of the Indy car made of more competitive lightweight magnesium was offered in September
1940 for $53.50. Pressure pump, brake handle, steering wheel, upholstered seat, simulated instrument panel, and
windshield were, with the exception of an "optional" hood scoop, all standard equipment for the completely
assembled car. Every Indianapolis car was personally assembled by hand and serially numbered by Barney Korn
and an assistant. They could be purchased polished or painted in any color desired.
Bantam Midget Spindizzy

fastenings, and spoke wheels
with rubber tires. Riveted windscreen and leather seat, machineturned dash, and working steering!

Ford TriMotor Goose Designed by William B. Stout.
In 1925, Ford bought Stout and his Junkers influenced
aircraft designs. Ford adapted the single-engined Stout
with three Wright (later, more powerful Pratt &

the control surfaces were made of the same materials. The
control wires for the elevator and rudder were strung
along the external surface. Similarly, engine gauges were
mounted externally, on the engine pods, to be monitored

Die-Cast Military Vehicles 1:43 scale
Adolf and Hermann obviously wanted to amass the most
advanced and deadly air force to fight and win their war
with. The best and brightest worked on these projects. None of these exercises ever went into production. These spectacular display models, made
from original drawings, photos and such, are made
of resin, have a display stand, and come with a
history card. Very cool stuff.
Boy.., these guys hit a home run with their exquisitely
detailed military vehicles. Not only are they superb models, but also even more importantly, they’ve gone to great
lengths in bringing vehicles from countries other than
only Germany and the USA..! Russian, French, British
and Italian. And 1:43 scale is a great size to collect, since
they don’t take up too much room, but still allow a lot of
detail. You’ll love ‘em.

Elless Manufacture This French, family owned business, Ets Sampic Père & Fils, has been making the finest
hunting horns and whistles since 1913. (We like ‘em better than the Brit Acme whistles). This old company has
been supplying whistles to the militaries and policing agencies of France, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, and others for many years, which should make them good enough for us!
SONNENLEDER, Germany Jens Gohres, the owner of Sonnenleder, is my kind of throwback! Uncompromising in
his outlook: everything that goes into his products must be natural. There isn’t a trace of synthetic or chemical in anything he makes. And the workmanship must be of an unimpeachable quality. That or nothing! And it shows. His leather
is fabulous. Smells and feels so good, you just want to caress it. Using only the hides from organically raised alpine cows
and an old, vegetable tanning process, that takes upwards of twelve weeks, he does it all. Tanning, cutting, sewing and finishing. It shows. All of these beautifully rub-polished or vegetable dyed products gracefully get darker with age.

W
ith this small, heavy, beautifully realized MicroRacer, Schuco, in 1954, began the single most successful “family”
of products in its history. All share the same running gear: simple open-wheeled racing die-cast components, tires,
rubber bumper, clockwork and so forth! Done in the die-cast-making process, many small and intricate shapes can be
made fairly rapidly and with great accuracy. The basic metal component is zinc. All Lilliput Micro-Racer castings are
hand-trimmed, burnished, pickled, and then primed and painted with automotive paints to the RAL color standards.
One of the great Schuco innovations was that you could “freewheel” the Micro-Racers with the spring wound or unwound,
without damage to the gears or mainspring, rolling it forward or backwards! The name “Micro” came not from the diminutive size of the cars (1:45 scale), but rather from the micro-threaded steering adjustment, usually the tailpipe of the car.
This meant, that so long as the tires were round, one could set hairpin-sharp courses. The whole key to these little marvels was that they were: tiny, heavy, and had steel mainsprings. Couple that with sticky, fat rubber tires for directional
stability, and you could go screaming across your parquet floors at speeds (actual) up to 35mph! And so that Mother
wouldn’t yell at us when they hit the furniture, all Micro’s were equipped with rubber bumpers on their noses.
20th Anniversary Gold &
Silver Jaguar Ltd Edition 200

Rallye Monte Carlo Tin Wind-Up Racetrack
A fabulous reproduction of a 1940 Arnold
(Germany), lithographed tin, wind-up racetrack!
Basically a skill game, to see if you can lift the gate, for
the on-rushing racecar to pass through, without having to stop. Has two gauges supposedly to measure
the cars rounds and the other for time. Neither terribly accurate! The mechanicals are a bit rough, but
none of that takes away from the incredible charm
this replica, made in India, has. Beautifully boxed, this
is a great gift for a toy collector! 9” x 9” x 2 ½”

Russian Sewing Machine Of all the toys we’ve
handled in the last 25 years, nothing pleased us
as much as these wonderful little sewing
machines. We had ‘em in our San Francisco
store. Over time it became increasingly difficult
to find them. A pallet full in Latvia, a couple of
cases in Kiev, and so on. Recently a contact in
Germany actually had ordered a whole bunch made
new. Well, he sent the money, but got stiffed on the goods: no sewing machines! Frustrated, since we still have
back-orders from 2 years ago, I happened to chat with an old Eastern Bloc hand who deals in Russian goods,
and guess what! He had just driven there pulling a trailer and brought back a modest bunch. We took ‘em all!
These machines really sew! Sew well, with a chain stitch. Use a nr. 9 needle. All cast metal with classic gold
trim, a large hand wheel with crank, mounted in a wooden base with bobbin compartment. A great and welcome find. Better hurry…! 10” x 4 1⁄2” x 7” AL01 Red; AL02 Black $129.50 ea.
Singvogel Wind the bird up with the enclosed key,
flip the switch under its tail feathers, and listen
to it singing, while the beak, head, wings,

Royal Navy Submarine M1 1917
This is a beautiful, full-hull model of perhaps the most
unique Submarine Cruiser ever designed. HM Submarine
M1 was developed toward the end of the First World War.
Unique in the history of submarine design, she and her sisters M2 and M3 were fitted with 12 inch guns from a
scrapped battleship..! This gave the M-Class the ability to
sneak-up on shore installations and surface vessels, rise to the
surface and deliver a formidable blow from very short range.
No merchant vessel was expected to survive a hit from M1.
She was completed before the war ended, but not employed
in combat because the Royal Navy feared that Germany
could copy the design. The M1 was sunk with the entire
crew of 69 while submerged on exercise on 12 Nov. 1925.
Constructed by Messrs. Vickers at Barrow-in-Furness,
launched July 1917. This is a full hull model, presented in a
mahogany and glass case measuring 64” x 12” x 19 ½”. The
ship model measures 53” long.
